I absolutely live this lens. I have a set of FL lenses that I pair with FD lenses for when I need a dreamier look than the FDs for certain scenes. Very beautiful effects.
if you have not done so, give the Minolta Rokkor PF 58 1.4 a try as well although I perceive the coating on the lens gives a different effect (provide the coating is there in full). I use it on an EOS R with an adapter for a sharper image with contrast for 1.4 open. It can be a little difficult to clean and the coating can be easily wiped off unintentionally.
So many newer lenses try to eliminate lens flares entirely but I think it adds so much to an image. Kinda sad that good lens flare is hard to come by these days
It really is! Love how flaring looks on video, I understand why they try to reduce it though on modern lenses cause they want the cleanest image possible
I have this lens. I haven't used it yet. I bought it, and several other FL mount lenses to use on my F1n. Nice to know it's a keeper. I'll have to slap it on my R6 and take it for a spin soon!
I have this lens and love it. I use it with my Fuji X cameras. Another favorite is the Canon FL 50mm f1.8. It is sharper and has great bokeh, I bought my mint copy of the 50mm at a charity sale, paid $10.00.
This is true and it works for almost all of them except this 58mm and the FL 35mm 2.5 since the rear mount has that extra raised section that hits the pin on the adapter
This FDn 85 f1.2 L you are showing actually has a predecessor: the FD 85 f1.2 SSC Aspherical (with breech lock mount), so Canon made two. But I never heard of the Zeiss Contax 85/1.2. These two also look remarkably similar. Looking forward to the compare.
Yep! The FD L has the aspherical predecessor but the optics are setup exactly the same. The only difference is the aspherical element on the SSC is hand ground instead of machined. The video comparing these two is out. I made it like two years ago.
You can activate the aperture off the camera, Take an FD rear cap and cut the back of the cap off, engage the cap and you can watch your blades activate. I use this when lens shopping and want to look through the lens.
You don't even have to do that. I just took a 50mm FD lens and actuated the lever on the back and it stopped down. I've been shooting with FD lenses for 53 years.
if you ever feel so inclined, consider comparing the 55mm f1.2 to the 58mm f1.2. specifically what is it about the 55mm f1.2 you dislike compared to the 58mm f1.2? thanks! (I sort of asked this question in your FL lens set video). thanks!
Definitely don’t recommend any ef to FD adapters. They seriously ruin the image quality of a lens since they have a glass element inside and also loses a stop of light transmission
Thorium, as I understand it, is in the glass itself. The rear element. So I buy an adapter and leave it on permanently. You gotta wonder about the safety for workers who made these lenses and others who made millions of them.
Hello, I just got Canon Super Canomatic R f1.2 and adapting it to BMP6 and DSLR only close focuses about 1 foot range and not far, with the FD-EOS mount. What am I doing wrong or is this lens only for close focusing? Online it says standard fast lens, so it could be the wrong flange distance then, perhaps. Which adapter should I get, if you ever tried it, thanks For film, I do have a Canon 35mm camera, ill try it on that and see
You can’t adapt FD to EF and have full focusing to infinity due to the flange distances. The lens either needs to be converted to EF or used on a mirrorless camera with the proper adapter
Hello I have a Canon Supercanomatic R 58mm 1.2 and I don't know if I can adapt it to Canon Ef or not. Your lens was F, but my lens also has a sloping elevation behind it.Thanks in advance
Hello, thanks for your video. It was very useful to me. I also fell in love with this optic, it's incredible! Regarding how to adapt the adapter, I also got to the point of removing its small screw, which did not allow the mount to fit correctly. As for the lever that the screw would affect, I fixed it with a small piece of a toothpick...and so far it works wonderfully. Greetings from Argentina!
This was awesome and very helpful! My Fotodiox FD->Leica M adapter won't fit this lens because of the problem you mentioned. I'll order the same brand (Fotasy) you are using successfully. Thank you!
The 35mm 2.5 has that same bump at the rear so you’ll have to do the same thing I described in this video with taking the pin out and controlling the aperture on the lens
@@calebbrunkow I think you mentioned this having more character than the FL 55mm 1.2 . Just a quick ask because I have the option to get either. Do you have an opinion? Will be using for Vintage style portraiture. Thanks a ton!!! Will check out your Pentax video today just saw that!
Hi, What do you think about FL55 F1.2 instead of FL58? Do you think that is any good? Cause I haven't found any EOS mount to use on Canon EOS 7D. Please let me know your thoughts.
The 55 is also a great lens! It’s about the same price and the 55mm is a bit newer than the 58 so it flares a little less and doesn’t really swirl like this lens does. Also the FL or FD mount aren’t really able to adapt to the EF mount on the 7D unless you swap the mount on the lens which will cost almost as much as the entire lens.
@@calebbrunkow Totally agreed Man. The outcome of this lens is crazy as hell. FL55 seems little bit of boring besides this. The thing is I want to use this lens on RED Scarlet W or any DSMC 2 sensor type cameras so the EOS is the only option for me. Thats why I’m looking for the modding kits but couldn’t found any 🙁 Thanks for your worthy reply Man. 🙏 Fully appreciated.
The 58mm 1.2 is tricky cause it has that part that sticks out on the back so it doesn’t work with most adapters, I haven’t heard of it not working with the A-1 though
I would strongly recommend against using any FD to EF adapters as they have an extra optical element in them which greatly degraded the image quality and loses a stop of light for your lens
@@calebbrunkow OK I will try them out. Actually, I can't wait to see the results of the Arri Alexa Mini or RED (DSMC) with this magical lens. That's why I'm looking for a solution. Anyway thanks for your worthy reply man. That is highly appreciated.

I store my lenses in the fridge, next to the meat. Radiation kills bacteria and the meat doesn't spoil as quickly. Just kidding. Actually, I was a Chemistry and Radiological Controls officer on a nuclear sub in my youth. Having studied the issue, I have no issues in using legacy-Thoriated glass as designed/intended. As long as you do not hold the rear element(s) next to your cornea for long periods without blinking, grind the glass to dust and inhale it, and/or break the rear elements into shards and impale yourself with them...the risks are negligible IMO. Stored normally or housed on a camera, time-distance-shielding are more than ample in bringing this radiation to near-natural/background levels. Yes, Thoriated glass does emit alpha, beta and some low energy gamma. The later, from decay of Bismuth and Thallium, at the late Th-232 decay stages to stabilized lead. Gamma levels are low. Beta...easily shielded by the lens/camera and glass. Alpha, shielded the same; not to mention it is stopped by the very thin (human) dead-skin layer. That being said, this is only applicable if the lens is used as intended/designed. The best news...the radioactive lens label keeps prices low! Don't tell anyone, it is a secret.
