I love these lenses. They maybe aren’t the best for everything, but man when they’re good they’re REALLY good. They’re also amazing as taking lenses for anamorphic adapters, especially the 55mm and the 85mm.
I bought the Canon FL 19mm in mint condition 3 years ago for 300,- I just looked up the prices for all of my vintage lenses 1 week ago and not gonna lie, I was happy when I saw that they are now at 1200,- (I got the deal of the century. :P) and now you make a video about this lens. good timing. :) back then I specifically wanted "single coated" lenses for those epic vintage lens flares, and they needed to be orange. did a lot of research, like... way too much. but ended up buying "single coated takumars" and "canon FL's". but again, I mainly film skateboarding, so all the typically cinema use cases don't apply to me. for example, for focal length, I pretty much only use between 50mm-300mm. and for anything wider always a fisheye. It's a lot of fun.:P right now my favorite prime lens is a "weltblick 135mm 1.8" (I think it also has 10 other names) and It's single coated. (for those epic slow motion shots) got it for 127,- and It has the most blur I've ever seen in my life.:P but whatever, your videos are always a pleasure to watch. :) 👍
That’s so cool! Love hearing what you use them for. $300 is a great price for the 19, that’s what I got mine for last year and it’s such a fun lens to use. That 135mm 1.8 sounds insane to use! How heavy is that thing?!?
Just bought one last week. Still waiting for it to show up at my door. I am planning to use for night photography. I am in Houston Texas, and there is a district where the very wealthy lives, and decorate their houses for Halloween and Christmas in incredible ways. I have taken out my AE-1, and will experiment with CineStill 800T. It is going to be fun and challenging!
There’s a somewhat rare lens called the Canon FL 55-135mm f/3.5. I picked up a mint version in an auction a few years back and it’s an incredible lens. It was Canon’s first SLR zoom and built like a tank could run over it. The quality of the build is extraordinary and was the downfall of the lens when FD came out. It was just too expensive for general consumers. Out of all my vintage lenses, I think it provides the most authentic vintage look with beautiful colour rendering and warmth. I found it great for portraiture. If you see one cheap somewhere, I highly recommend it.

You might be right. There are a lot of people online who think is has no coating. I don't have any way of knowing. I heard it had Fluorite Lens elements which is used in microscopes. I just got a projector lens, and anamorphic projector lens. I have 44 vintage lenses. No, I had better make that 45 vintage lenses now. I just got the Kowa Vidoscope Super-16mm 2x Anamorphic. I have a few FDs, and I love them, but it's true they don't have the character of the FLs. I recently got my first one. An FL 55-135mm f3.5 zoom. I love it! The flares are fun. It's quite sharp from f8 - f11. I can't focus to infinity zoomed all the way out to 55mm. All the other focal lengths will work though. And zoomed all the way in to 135mm, it shows a scratch on the front element with any aperture smaller than f11. If you zoom in at all, and open up the aperture, the bokeh is beautiful, and if you move close to the subject when zoomed out, it creates great images. And like I said the flares are fun.
They also make a 55mm f1.2. I have one that my grandpa bought brand new when it came out and he passed it and a 135mm down to my mom and my mom gave them to me. The 55mm is, for all intents and purposes, basically identical to the 58mm from what I can tell. It even looks identical. But It exists as another option in that lens lineup for those interested.

Awesome video just subscribed. Pleasure to meet a fellow vintage lens enthusiast. I also have made a few UA-cam videos about vintage glass. I just love the character of the old glass. I've collected a bunch of lenses but I find the older glass is more fun. I haven't got any FL lenses in my collection but I might have to pick one up after watching this. Cheers.

Just recently picked up the 58mm 1.2 and 85mm 1.8. I looked at the 28mm, but ive got a faster vintage 28mm at 2.5f, so didnt bother. Absolutely phenomenal lenses, and not super sought after either (hopefully stays that way!). Great video!
@@calebbrunkowHey mate super late response! Love the 58mm but not sold yet on the 85mm. Will have to try the 85mm on a speedbooster and see if that changes my mind. I ended up purchasing a 28mm anyway for cheap, so waiting on that to arrive. Edit: Also blame UA-cam, I watch a decent amount of stuff and never once got notified about your reply!
I have all of the FL lenses from 28/3.5 thru 100/3.5, including a 55-135/3.5 zoom and 50/3.5 macro and FL Bellows. The only FL lens I use for my digital cameras, Canon 5D & 6D is the 50/3.5 macro and macro bellows, the others I use in my Canon FT 35mm film camera. I sold my FL 19/3.5 a few years ago after I bought a EF 20mm 2.8 USM for my Canon 5D which I use for architectural interiors. The EF 20mm/5D is a much better setup for interiors than the FL 19/3.5 & FT camera body, so even though I sold it for cheap, I do not miss it.
Great review. Not much said about the FL lenses. Have you compared the various mount erosions of 50mm f1.4, namely FL, FD and LTM? Would be great to see the differences!
Glad you enjoyed it! I haven’t tested those lenses specifically but I have been wanting to swap the 35mm 2.5 out with the LTM 35mm f2 and 135 2.5 out with the canomatic r 135 2.5 as the coatings match better and also want to add the canomatic r 100mm f2 for a more well rounded set
I have also wondered about the differences. I note that there are 3 types of the FL 50mm f1.4. I have the first version which I understand to have a radioactive element. I actually really like the rendering from radioactive lenses.
I've had the 28, 35, 50, 55, 85 and the 135 and I've sold them after collecting of more than a year. I regret and start over again. Top ones: 55 and 85 but the 35 is also very very nice.
I've not been using the 58 but the 55 doesn't have the ''notch''so it's easier to mount. And I think it will not have the grazy bokeh it's more smooth but I like it a lot. From 2.8 it starts to be unbelievable sharp. At 1.2 or 1.4 its nice and creamy @@calebbrunkow

Nice video celebrating these amazing FL lenses. I use them on a FT QL and a recently purchased T90 so 2 cameras and a set of killer lenses for under £200. I also use them on Fuji X mirrorless cameras. I love them and I'm sure they will outlast me by several centuries!
The photos should be fine, you may just have some more flaring or a slightly lower contrast image due to the single coating on the lens but I wouldn’t imagine it’d be noticeable
Stil have my Canon FT QL with FL lenses 50mm f1.4 -135mm f2.5 - 200mm f4.5. I also have my Canon F1 (N) with FD lenses 28mm f1.8 - 50mm f1.4 - 50mm f1.8 - 100-200mm f5.6.
If you like the 35 @ 2.5, think you'll like the 58 @2.8 even better. 58 mm is fascinating @ 8.0 on 4/3 for outdoors shoot, it"s like looking through a Mig super radar... Gosh, I can see every ennemy behind the curtains !
@@ThiagoMazzeo it’s just a basic fotasy FD/FL one. Pretty much any of them work but just make sure you have one that you can take the pin out of if you have any of the FL’s with the weird back
Actually adapting FL is not that difficult. You just need to use it's standard adapter and remove the metal pin that regulated the aperture in the lens. We have a 19mm FL so it's first hand info. I don't think the rest of the set must be that different.
Here's a short film I shot on the FX6 with my set of Canon FL lenses. I also used a 1/8 Neewer Black Diffusion Filter ua-cam.com/video/iMMyWT9ajDc/v-deo.htmlsi=NRitz-OuypyafZPG
I think most of the FL lenses are radioactive, no? Looks like they have the yellow tinted thorium coating. I feel like the two biggest turnoffs for me is radioactivity and short focus throw. I feel the Canon LTM might be better for me. Long focus throw and no thorium. Ah, you talk about the coatings at 6:00. Presuming that these lenses have thoriated glass, then they do not have yellow coating, per se. It's just the radioactivity that has turned them yellow in time. If you want to get rid of the yellow tint, put them under UV lights.
To my knowledge only the 58mm 1.2 in this set has thoriated glass and I corrected it with a uv light so it matched the rest of the set. The LTM’s are such an amazing set for sure! They’re just a bit out of my budget at the moment
I have the FL 50mm f1.8 that I bought at a charity sale for $10.00 and the FL 58mm f1.2 I bought for a little more. I use them on my Fuji cameras with a straight (not speedbooster) adapter. Both have a nice look. The 58mm can be a little soft wide open, but Topaz Sharpen AI or stopping down to f2.8 or f4.0 can fix that. Here's a short video to test my new Fuji X-S20 and get my feet wet with Davinci Resolve. It was filmed with my Canon FD 24mm that I bought new in 1972 and the FL 58mm. ua-cam.com/video/CKg2e4hWwh4/v-deo.html
Canon FL lenses wer made to be like Leitz lenses. Less contrasty, softer! They were actually better! Why mustyou/others chat about use in modern gigs! BS buddy. My M3 has a 50mm Summicron that's like 60 years old! It's damn sharp and lovely.. I have quite a few Canon FL and FD lenses. They are ALL less contrasty!
I chat about them in modern gigs because we live in modern time and if you’re building a set of old glass you’re more than likely doing so to use for paid video projects because you want a certain look to your footage so it’s good to know how they perform and their possible use cases

Stil have my Canon FT QL with FL lenses 50mm f1.4 -135mm f2.5 - 200mm f4.5. I also have my Canon F1 (N) with FD lenses 28mm f1.8 - 50mm f1.4 - 50mm f1.8 - 100-200mm f5.6.
That’s awesome! I’ve been wanting to add an FL 50 1.4 to this set
If you like the 35 @ 2.5, think you'll like the 58 @2.8 even better. 58 mm is fascinating @ 8.0 on 4/3 for outdoors shoot, it"s like looking through a Mig super radar... Gosh, I can see every ennemy behind the curtains !
The 58 f1.2 bruh.. im sold.
The 58 is so cool huh?!?
@@calebbrunkow it’s in my cart on eBay… 😳
@LocksleyLennoxfilms nice! Make sure it’s a good one, I had to send my first one back since the focus ring was so tight
Hey Caleb! Which adapter do you use for the canon FL to RF?
@@ThiagoMazzeo it’s just a basic fotasy FD/FL one. Pretty much any of them work but just make sure you have one that you can take the pin out of if you have any of the FL’s with the weird back
Fantastic video dude! You jave inspired me!!!!
So glad I could inspire you!
Not much content on the FL's! You'll have to look into Takumars next :p - did you treat the 50mm with an LED for thorium?
Love the Takumars! Made a video on them last year. Yes I treated the 58mm with a uv light for the thorium yellow tint.
Ooooh boy. You ask me if I ever used FD Llenses? Yes I did - I guess long before you were born...
Actually adapting FL is not that difficult. You just need to use it's standard adapter and remove the metal pin that regulated the aperture in the lens. We have a 19mm FL so it's first hand info. I don't think the rest of the set must be that different.
Yep! That is correct, I believe the 19, 35 2.5, 58 1.2, and 135 2.5 have that mount that requires the pin to be removed
Here's a short film I shot on the FX6 with my set of Canon FL lenses. I also used a 1/8 Neewer Black Diffusion Filter

I could be wrong, but regarding the 35mm... every copy I've seen has the cooler coating.
I’ve only ever seen one of them before with a warmer tint listed on eBay
why did you chose the 58mm f1.2 FL over the 55mm f1.2 FL? thanks!
No mention of S.C. or S.S.C. coatings?
All of these lenses either have SC or whatever coating was before SC as these predate the FD’s. All are single coated optics to my knowledge
Ooft! How’s the 135 2.5? ❤
Great now I need to finish buying my set before they become exponentially more expensive because somebody decided to do a video on this😂
I appreciate it but I’m not that influential haha
I am a m42 guy but id try them out. What adapters do you use from ef
Unfortunately you can’t easily adapt these lenses to ef. You would need to exchange the mounts.
Fire though . Love these
They’re great lenses for sure
A+
Your eBay links aren’t actually links, just text, heads up!
Whoops! Thanks for the heads up, lemme fix that
I have the FL 50mm f1.8 that I bought at a charity sale for $10.00 and the FL 58mm f1.2 I bought for a little more.

Very cool!
Jesus dude .. this video is like designed to get us to rush the rest of em out FD Ebay
They just dont have enough character for me... :-))))))))))))))))))))))))))))). Really? How is that? Are they too sharp wide open???
3:15 _"Bulbous?"_ The word you want here is "protruding," my man. (Or "protrusion.") An eyeball is bulbos. Also bulbous: a clown nose; a radome; or, you know... a _bulb._
Good video though, otherwise; I can't blame you for what No Child Left Behind did to your education!
