MacDrevi0us I was just going to suggest this. Watching at 1/2 speed has changed the way I watch videos. Everyone sounds out of their heads and it’s great fun.
Yeah, lunacy. Don't believe strangers like Dan and co. There's 100 brands out there. This MXR pedal version came AFTER the introduction of the signature brand types of products. That complicates your life as a buyer and consumer and future investor. Dan NEVER talks about pedal investments. Never tells you if he thinks the price will fall or go up.
I have a Mutron Phase II, an MXR Phase 90 and a Boss PH-1r. For clean stuff the Mutron is just awesome. Think Smashing Pumpkins. But for soloing I love the Boss Ph-1r. It's like someone is working a wah wah pedal for me while I'm soloing..
No, there's hundreds of lies in each video here, I just couldn't stand listening to them all, so I cancelled my like to this channel. They didn't remove any of the lies in the time I stopped watching their videos. The low quality show didn't get better and that's what I predicted for them. They didn't admit they've lied you in the past. They didn't correct any lies and mistakes they've made. Their videos contain a lot of squabbling and fighting in 2024. I think they're getting tired of each other and keeping all the lies going. This deceitful lifestyle MUST be bad for their health. This fighting will make Dan want to fly out of the country to get away from his co-workers and responsibilities. He'll become more irresponsible and aggressive and agitated the more he does this show. The more his SOLO projects take off, the more he'll become TWISTED and at odds with himself. The internal rage is boiling up. Soon he'll be throwing guitars across the stage.
4:10 - "It's a brilliant sound. Why did it go out of fashion?" Because while it's true that 'tastes change,' one of the variables of change in the equation is 'the absence of taste.'
My Dad had one of those old Maestro phasers, I'm honestly GENUINELY surprised I havn't seen a boutique pedal employ a similar way of controlling or rather editing it live. Something that gives you that expression just like a Wah.
There's nothing quite like a Mutron ll. They're really good for Funk/R&B. However, there's something the Mutron can do that most others can't. I owned 3 of those. The Small Stone and Mutron ll were the "go to" phasers for us Funk guys. Small Stone(old ones)had a tendency to NOT play well with some other pedals in the chain. Gary Shider used a Maestro phaser a lot. Strange pedal. I still used my Roland PH-2 for clean tone funkiness! So damn juicey ! Not good with high gain though. With high gain, I like the MXR . Unlike the other phasers, the MXR doesn't cause your guitar to whistle. Not as funky as the Mutron ll or Roland, but very creamy and warm. I'm glad somebody finally showed the phase shifter some love. Really enjoyed this video!
Yay phasers are my favourite! Great rundown, but I think you gave the small stone short shrift. I think you may have a bad potentiometer on your small stone. I've got a couple of vintage ones and I find the rate knob to be very responsive. I have a newer block logo phase 90 and I actually like that it has a bit of a volume jump because phase+OD=smiles. Thanks for the videos.
Yeah I was bummed with the Small Stone bit. That rate knob has a huuuuge range, seem his must be broken. With color on and rate the whole way down it's sooo tasty. Put a delay and or drive before it and it's just such a unique sound.
_If EHX would just get their pot game together, I'd buy more!_ 🤑 Really though, of the 70+ pedals I've bought, 3 EHX are pedals and a pot has broken on 2 of them. A couple other kinds have cracked knobs, but none of the others have busted pots.
I'm really close to get a degree in "effectology" 'cause I can't stop to whatch Daniel and Mick's videos...i'm building my first pedalboard and you are my masters!
What about a video: how to set an amplifier ? You could show us what do the controls of your different amp, how they interact (if they do) and how you dial them to get this amazing dry clean tones. I really like your video, you are nice guys and you explain very well ! Thank you.
+Daniel TheGigRig Daniel, about the smallstone, you should have shown it like Kevin Parker(tame impala) uses it. Color on and speed about 11 o'clock. I don't know why yours only works in the extreme setting of the speed knob, but its an awesome pedal and Kevin's sound its remarkable. You should definitely hear it
I actually bought a maestro phaser like this one from the video that from a flea market for 25$ dating back to 1976 and have been hooked on the Norlin era maestro pedals ever since. These Maestro pedals were only built from 76-78. I recently bought the Maestro Stage Phaser which i believe is the best phaser ever made because of the extra controls and the ramping of speed.
I just got a DOD 201 Phasor. It's a bit like the MXR Phase 45 but I had some trouble finding that. I think the 201 suits my tone better too. Keep it in mind if you're looking for a subtle phaser. ;)
I've always wondered if David Lindley used a phaser (Phase 45? 90?) for his lap steel sound from his late 70's work with Jackson Browne. Almost a wah wah sound but without the wide sweep...Any clue if that's what he's using?? Running on Empty era...
Is there affordable (and way smaller) substitute for the ultimate phase tone of a Schulte Compact Phasing "A to create that huge Catch the Rainbow sound?
Yessss! Love me some phasing! Im so in love with my small stone reissue been playing it for years..best phaser imo! Plannin on getting a mobius for all my modulation needs..i hear it does the small stone pretty well! (hopefully! I can make room for more fuzzez on ny board with a mobius=) )...flange demo next??? Think about it..mxr flange, electric mistress, tc flange..ughhh lol. Thanx again Dan n Mick
Definite thumbs up on the Mobius. One of my all time favourite pedals. Cant say how good it does a Small Stone, never had one, but Im sure its possible. And more fuzz, the better. :)
What is the issue with photocells in manufacturing uni-vibe style pedals? Do they not make those anymore? Did they use some sort of dangerous chemical components?
what gives the univibe the warble is there are four caps in the phase sections of the lfo. instead of all four caps matching and being symetrically equall they are mismatched . for example instead of four 4n7 caps it has a 220 n an 15n a 4n7 and a 470pf. this creates a warble misbalenced throb that is amazing .
I have a lot of Electro-Harmonix pedals because they sound great. However, I tend to ban them from my gig pedalboard because they are so hard to control. Like this Small Stone, they go from zero to crazy in about a 2 millimeter clockwise turn. I just don't like having to try to fuck with them between songs. The last EH pedal on my board was a Memory Boy, which I replaced with an MXR Carbon Copy for analog delay with modulations. I find, other pedals usually have far more control over the nuances. Now they all sit in my bin or on experimental pedalboards that I mess around with at home. By the way, MXR Phase 90 is my favorite pedal and is ALWAYS on my gig board. Also, I call the "patch" (to borrow a MIDI term) I make with the MXR la machine octave fuzz into the MXR Phase 90 the "Hendrixomophone." :)
Does anyone know what phase shifter Thin Lizzy was using on the track Emerald from Jailbreak LP? If you want to hear the proper use of one put on some closed back headphones and listen to the right channel about the halfway point when they trade off leads. Most players in the 70's used phasers on the dirty channel, EVH, Roger Fischer (Heart) Thin Lizzy and many more . The sweep rate was usually slow and the sweeps were wide making a "jet" sound which no one does any more. Like most things from that era, they are lost in time.
I love That Pedal Show but I think this episode did the Small Stone a disservice as for one that speed knob was obviosly faulty (poor quality control back in the day), and then going on to the gimmicky setting on the colour switch. I always loved the Small Stone set low on speed and intensity whre it really shines and its pleasing milky texure and tone come through. I do love the Phase 45 and the Mojo Vibe though. Alsosince I'm high on the self righteous mountain top ivory tower where my phase shifter recollection is beyond perfect, I hated hated hated that Maestro, just as much as I did when I ditched my Small Stone for a Maestro (Alex Lifeson had one). The Maestro had a seasick thing probably from the peaky tones and it also had a weird dryness that it imparted to my tone. I could not get it out of my signal chain fast enough! It did make it onto my very first pedal board though , a whomping heavy stupid big chunk of 3/4" ply spray painted black with the Maestro held on with big screws popping up and slid into the channels the feet were slotted into and my other pedal at the time, a Turtle FuzzWaVolume pedal with "ring modulation" , a re-branded Foxx unit apparently. The Fuzz was very cool as it was basically a Foxx Tone Machine with that crazy octavia switch, and the wah was cool with 4 settings from mellow to brite, but when it was not engaged it was backward volume pedal non bypass tone and volume sucking bitch, maybe the worst ever example of a tone sucker, but then again I was a "nice boy, but dumb...about as sharp as a bowlin' bawl", and was probably running 2 15 foot cheap assed home soldered and very poorly at that coilly cords and maybe a 10 foot cable between the 2 pedals adding to the sonic soup. Ahhh the memories... It took me years to find out what that fuzz really was and I've wanted one for years and years too, it was the only fuzz I've ever owned.Maybe I should grab a Danelectro French Toast apparently the same circuit as a Tone Machine. I know this long winded rant is regarding an ancient episode but I got a little defensive of my personal favourite phase shifter getting laughed at and got off on a tangent but I can 't help it. I is what I is. Love your show fellas, I go wet/dry/wet because of your shows and don't miss an episode and this is 2020 . Cheers Mick and Dan, 2 vastly underrated phenominal guitarists in my opinion.
Wow! Mutron and Maestro win for the shape! ;) That Small Stone is broken in my opinion: I have two (1979 V3 and a Reissue) and tried many older ones, all were much wider and faster in the rate control, this one does only slow phasing, have it checked by a qualified tech!
No. I was rsponding to another comment.I meant to say "fix" your phasors :) Back in the day, Electro Harmonics pedals were referred to as " Tin Can Junk". They sound good. but broke down a lot.. Mike Matthews personally fixed my Memory Man.
Need a vid on buffers. I have a three knob Butler Tube Driver and I think it may need a buffer either in front or behind to make it work on my pedalboard but would like to know more about how buffers can help old pedals like these.
He's so uncomfortable pretending to like the phaser. He didn't come around until he got to jam with fuzz on both sides. Dan was just giddy with love for the phaser.
Hi Daniel, i have a few different wah pedals , 2 are from the 70;s Thomas Organ Crybaby 1973 and Thomas Organ Crybaby 1977 bot have different inductors and a 1990 Vox V847 wah ,,, can you do a show on the different wah pedals with various effects ? fuzz, distortions, overdrives ,delays with a sonic maximizer stomp etc etc ,, i would love to see a setup video of the classic rock bands ,, (hint) pink floyd, led zep,and the like ,, Thank You for keeping all of us "Old-Schoolers" informed
Great show as always. I'm really enjoying this. I had an idea for an episode, how to use a multi effects pedal with an amplifier. Would that be something you'd be interested in doing?
I presume you mean That Pedal Show channel? Couldn't see any flanger comparison on there, only a modulation basics (very good show BTW). We need Six funky flangers :)
Silly question: the Ehx Small Stone has this colour switch So, is there any other phaser that has he same sound or any replica available? I’m searching and I can’t find it. Love your stuff and it’s crazy how much had change your channel to these days. Congratulations! Cheers
You guys completely ignored the Hawkwind/Krautrock type phase sound, which of these pedals cover that? ie: a slower, deeper, wider phase, as opposed to the typical bluesy/funky type phase.. you also didn't cover reggae type phase.

+ben galvin That sound with both fuzzes was fantastic!!!
I've got the reissue script phase 90 with the led, I love it.
It's easy to tell that the two of you just love playing guitar.
The many excited looks of delight during the video are great.

Best part of my Friday mornings... love That Pedal Show. You guys rock!!
The Bad Stone by EHx is also a pretty good phaser with a little deeper sounding modulation than the Small Stone.
As others have said. The pedal show is now my favourite show of the week
Thank you
Great video to watch whilst chilling before a gig tonight. Wicked job guys, keep up the insanely good work

Whirlwind Orange Box Phaser - one of the best I have tried1
+undergroundjohnny Whirlwind is what remains of the original MXR, not unilke G&L Guitars.
Oh man I can't believe this was five years ago
They should do a new phaser show but then again phasing isn't really at high demand anymore
I'm really close to get a degree in "effectology" 'cause I can't stop to whatch Daniel and Mick's videos...i'm building my first pedalboard and you are my masters!
check out an old issue of Keyboard magazine that taught facts and creative thinking about effect pedal use that's not just for keyboardists.
Mick: Will it be a mess?
Dan: No it'd be awesome.
*clicks*
Guitar: AAAAAAWWWWWWWWEEEESSSSSOOOOOOOOMMMMEEEEE!!!!!!!!!
Very informative, but try not doing mushrooms before your next video and you might not find everything you play so hysterical
+Thom Vogan hahahahahaha
+Thom Vogan great post - if you watch this again imagining Mick and Dan are on mushies it is proper hilarious
+Jack Harman half speed- works every time
+Thom Vogan I was going to make a mushroom post, but sure enough, I'm not the only one that suspected that was shroomy laughter.
+Thom Vogan 19:19 is excellent evidence of your viewpoint.
interesting, the MXRs before the OD give a subtle wah/filter sound as it modulates, dig it
I have a MXR Plastic Case Phase pedal that a friend gave me. Something something Commando, I don't remember the number. I freakin' love that pedal!
What about a video: how to set an amplifier ? You could show us what do the controls of your different amp, how they interact (if they do) and how you dial them to get this amazing dry clean tones. I really like your video, you are nice guys and you explain very well ! Thank you.

I wish there were some kind of mix between the phase 45 and phase 90, with a depth knob.

This is becoming my favorite channel.
Rochester Whirlwind Orange Box is my favorite Phase 90. Blows any MXR out of the water.
very nice, I love all phaser pedals, here in the video, I like especially the 2nd and the 3rd ... :)
Fuzz and phaser = Glorious. Some other great phasers: Red Witch Moon Phaser, DOD 201 Phasor and the EHX Bad Stone. Another great show guys!!
This is great...enjoyed learning particularly how the mxr retains its midrange

why dont they make more pedals like the Maestro with those side knobs? seems convenient.
Is there affordable (and way smaller) substitute for the ultimate phase tone of a Schulte Compact Phasing "A to create that huge Catch the Rainbow sound?
Univibes need a video all on their own. Just after Big Muffs lol.
Love a phaser. Blue is such a beautiful guitar.
Yessss! Love me some phasing! Im so in love with my small stone reissue been playing it for years..best phaser imo! What is the issue with photocells in manufacturing uni-vibe style pedals? Do they not make those anymore? Did they use some sort of dangerous chemical components?

I want a montage of those close ups on their faces where they're just smiling at each other
what gives the univibe the warble is there are four caps in the phase sections of the lfo. instead of all four caps matching and being symetrically equall they are mismatched . for example instead of four 4n7 caps it has a 220 n an 15n a 4n7 and a 470pf. this creates a warble misbalenced throb that is amazing .

you guys need some Red Witch pedals big time. The deluxe moon phaser is amazing!

15:15 Daniel is killin' it
Fuzz after the Vibe --> immediate Hendrix.
No it's not.
You have a metal string vibration sound.
You don't have any of the 6,000 jimi Hendrix sounds that ARE available to buy in 2024.
You guys really should try the Maxon PhaseTone 999 :)
Can We See Your PedalBoards ? The Ones You Would Do a Concert with ?
Single Songwriter yeah, sure thing
Daniel TheGigRig yea that would be a very awesome episode, showing off u and Micks personal boards and sounds!
The Chase Bliss Wombtone is missing
Great video! Please make one about how fuzz effects interacts with humbuckers and single coils.
Wow! Mutron and Maestro win for the shape! ;)
That Small Stone is broken in my opinion: I have two (1979 V3 and a Reissue) and tried many older ones, all were much wider and faster in the rate control, this one does only slow phasing, have it checked by a qualified tech!
I think EH will mix your old phasors, dude. Give 'em a shout.
Sorry but I didn't understand, what do you mean? Do you think my Small Stones have something wrong with the rate control?
No. I was rsponding to another comment.I meant to say "fix" your phasors :) Back in the day, Electro Harmonics pedals were referred to as " Tin Can Junk". They sound good. but broke down a lot.. Mike Matthews personally fixed my Memory Man.
Stunning
Need a vid on buffers. I have a three knob Butler Tube Driver and I think it may need a buffer either in front or behind to make it work on my pedalboard but would like to know more about how buffers can help old pedals like these.
Piddlepond ok, good idea ;)
I love the Huggy Bear jam at the end.
You guys are doing a sick job, definitely the best gear related channel on youtube!
From speaking to dolphins 6:30 into downloading the extraterrestrial blueprint to the consciousness at 6:42
Great stuff Daniel ! would love to see you do a flanger review ;)
Been loving alexander effects F.13 and others
LAUGHING MY ASS OFF!!! FAR OUT 😂
3:42 to 4:00 Mick hates the sound haha. Too polite to say it other than facial expression
Single Songwriter sounds like a plan ;)
the best one i ever played was the empress phaser. i leave it at home though cause so many settings. i use two mxr evh pedals so i get stereo live.
Guys... Where is the Maestro PS-1a? That's was the first one to come out I believe... 1971-ish
My favorite question...what if we put both the fuzzes on?!
How does Dan feel about the Chase Bliss Wombtone?
I have a A/DA Final Phase that does some amazing phasing effects
I"m liking the Mojo Vibe and the Phase 45
15:07 just won the Internet.
Loved the tone at 8:47
Great show as always. I'm really enjoying this. I had an idea for an episode, how to use a multi effects pedal with an amplifier. Would that be something you'd be interested in doing?
Awesome vid, any chance you guys could do the same with flangers?
+MrBingping yes, flanger special committee mung up on the new channel
I presume you mean That Pedal Show channel? Couldn't see any flanger comparison on there, only a modulation basics (very good show BTW). We need Six funky flangers :)
at 10.06 = nice hendrix setup. Octavio (fuzz) + univibe + fuzz. maybe wah in front ^^
That sound will make you smile :D
no he didn't, during the period of 1962 to 1963 he had the vibe in front
Love the intro!!!
Classic!
Silly question:
the Ehx Small Stone has this colour switch
So, is there any other phaser that has he same sound or any replica available?
I’m searching and I can’t find it.
Love your stuff and it’s crazy how much had change your channel to these days.
Congratulations! Cheers
Hi Rod, not that we know of, but EH does modern versions that sound great 👍
The faces these guys makes lol
Love you guys.... but $1200 for 'the killer Fuzz" is killin me .. oh RT, because TONE
The Statler and Waldorf of pedal reviews... ;-)
You guys completely ignored the Hawkwind/Krautrock type phase sound, which of these pedals cover that? ie: a slower, deeper, wider phase, as opposed to the typical bluesy/funky type phase.. you also didn't cover reggae type phase.
Playing guitar while high be like
Haha you’re fucking right!!!
