I saw the Youngbloods perform this song in Golden Gate Park, Sharon Field, in 1969. Beautiful memory, great song, a feeling of unity and peace in the crowd. Will it ever return to us?
vocalist jesse colin young - still with us at 80 - had one of the most calming and gorgeous voices to ever grace your ears. the message of this song has sadly been lost in today's world. and yes jesse is american. the youngbloods did not last long but had a couple of great albums and were not a one hit wonder. a song you need to hear is 'darkness darkness'. here is the official hq video from 1969 - about the vietnam war. simply stunning : ua-cam.com/video/2xC2JZ6NLv8/v-deo.html

This and "San Francisco" by Scott McKenzie were the anthems of the 60's flower children.(along with a number of heavier, more trippy psychedelic songs.)
Such a beautiful song and beautiful performance. From the mid-60's. The lead singer is Jesse Colin-Young. Definitely American. The song was written by Dino Valenti (under the pseudonym Chet Powers).
I posted the YT link to the Dino Valenti version. Chet Powers was his real name, Dino being his stage name. He sold the rights to this song whilst in prison, on drug charges I believe. My memory is foggy, but I believe he sold the rights to it for only a few hundred dollars.
A time of greater respect for each other and a lot less judgement of your neighbour. Loved this song then and still love it today. Thanks Harri. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
You're right, Harri. If people spent more time generating positive rather than negative, it might be a better world. Maybe all the 'peace, love, harmony' songs from the 60's didn't make a lot of difference at the time. But, maybe if songwriters and performers would have continued with those types of songs over the past few decades, instead of the negative cr@# that's out there today, we might have achieved more of the peace, love, and harmony we still strive for. Thank you for your reaction to this beautiful song!
This song makes me feel like a kid again! One of my favorites from the 60's. Love this one Blondie, then again love all your requests! Happy memories from my childhood for sure.
Jesse's "Songbird" album is really beautiful. 3 songs in particular: "Songbird", "Daniel" and "Before You Came". This was a main hippy anthem. Beautiful man and song.
All these songs from the 60's were a warning to our future. They knew we would continue to face the same challenges our country & world were facing. Sadly most people just write this off as Flower Power Music. The lyrics from all those groups were powerful. Storytelling songs, like Simon & Garfunkel folk rock was folk rock genius, and yet all these songs still apply to much of what we are STILL dealing with. The 60's was perhaps the most powerful music decade in American, British & Canadian music. For those of us that grew up with this music we knew what a great time it was to live.
Hamilton Camp played bit parts in westerns. In the movie Ride clear of Diablo the professor from Gilligan's Island, playing a bad guy , shoots him dead and he falls off his horse. Hamilton raised six kids. Writing songs and playing bit parts. What a man.
i saw them perform this live in 1967 near San francisco . Before the song started a stage hand came up and said something in Jessie's ear. his eyes opened wide and a big smile came across his face . during the song he began to cry and when finished , he told u that his wife had just given birth to their first child . the feeling in the audience was over whelming . almost everyone stated to tear up and the applause was thundering and soft simultaneously . a truly magical afternoon .
What an AMAZING song & reaction. What a world we could all live in. 🌎 peace, love, respect, care, & help for each & every soul. Life's so short, after all. If we don't achieve this ideal on earth, we will most assuredly get an extreme over abundance of this in heaven. Which I believe in with all my heart & soul.

Jesse Colin Young, along with Jim Keltner and Klaus Voormann, appeared as back-up band on albums by John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, among others. They were a kickass band and can be seen in the film The Concert for Bangladesh.
"Quicksilver Messenger Service" has a song called "Fresh Air," you'll love. Add "What About Me?" by them. "Gold and Silver," too. Dino Valenti, who wrote the first two, also wrote the 60's anthem, "Get Together," sung by The Youngbloods with Jesse Colin Young on vocals. Jesse still performs. Youngbloods have a lot of great songs like "Sunlight" and "Darkness, Darkness."
Great reaction Harri. The singer is Jessie Colin Young an American and a musician who came to maturity in that far out period of the 60’s. A universal message and they have some other great songs check out Darkness Darkness.
I’m an optimist at heart, but also a realist. It would be a wonderful world for all if we could just live in this world loving one another. Will it ever be achieved? I doubt it. As long as there are inequalities, greed, lust for power and money… things will never change. People will step on others to get ahead and the poor and disadvantaged will be the victims. The Youngbloods led by Jesse Colin Young released a cover version of Let's Get Together, a song originally recorded in 1964 by the Kingston Trio but not released as a 45. A year later it was released as a single follow up to Wee Five's Top 10 hit 'You Were On My Mind' & peaked at #31. The Youngbloods dropped 'Let's' from the title & their 1967 release failed to catch on peaking at #62 after charting for 8 weeks. The song continued to be a concert favorite performed by Joni Mitchell & after the Youngbloods version was used in a radio PSA they re-released it in 1969 & it would peak at #5.A DC5 cover version of yet another title called 'Everybody Get Together' would reach the Top 10 in the UK in 1970.
This was popular when I was in Vietnam (1967-68)...it was played not only in our military bases there, but also among the Vietnamese...you would hear it every time you passed one of the little bars on Tu-Do Street in Saigon...the song is wonderfully beautiful in its simplicity...
I heard it in probably 1970. Another singer with a fantastic voice in my opinion and this I believe was a one hit wonder. He should of been much more successful. Love the song!

One of my very favourites since it came out. an exquisite song, and a timeless, perfect message so many were trying to convey in their own way. It was like experiencing a great awakening and slowly watching the world drift back into darkness and slumber. I saw Jesse Colin Young in 1976 at Toronto's Varsity Stadium followed by the Band and CSNY. Lotsa smoke, between at least 10 of us, we'd returned from a beautiful weekend up north on the Sunday for the concert, incredible day and show I loved finally incorporating this one into my repertoire, mostly solo, but it's there if the opportunity arises.
Lead singer Jesse Colin Young is from New York so that may be the accent you`re picking up on. This is the group`s only hit. And yes, you`re so right about those guitars. They`re magical. Jesse is still alive & performing with his son.
Just for giggles, Harri, The Youngbloods also recorded a jazzy little piece you might enjoy called "The Wine Song". Well done, this, my thanks and best regards. ✌️

Darkness became something of an anthem to the boys serving in Viet Nam. This song was written by Chet Powers aka Dino Valenti (and several other names due to several drug related convictions).

The song was originally recorded as "Let's Get Together" by the Kingston Trio in a live performance in March 1964 that was released on June 1, 1964, on their album Back in Town.
Ah so we meet again Harri. How are you my friend? (I think I just heard you say "Great"). I hope that is the case. The Youngbloods had another song that did quite well in the charts and that song was titled "Darkness, Darkness." I like it almost as much as their more popular song "Get Together." As far as Jessie Colin Young goes, he was immensely popular in the early 1970's. One of his more popular songs is titled "Ridge Top." It is awesome and if you get the chance listen to the words and it will comfort your Soul. It does for me anyway. Great to see you again Harri. I sincerely hope that you've been alright, since we last spoke. So... Keep Smiling... Cheers...
Check out the wave speech, fear and loathing in las vegas, scene with Johnny Depp, written by Hunter S Thompson and how he used this song in the background to totally define an entire generational hippie culture in a few paragraphs. May be the best piece Hunter has ever written.
Great review. The guitar part is said to be "great string pickings." It's similar to the late great Glenn Campbell. And that thrown in word, "Listen", classic song writing. I karokkee the song, people love it. The ending temp, "Right Now" X's 3, awesome ending, such a powerful statement. BTW, review their sing Darkness Darkness.
An epic song of the 60's. Completely captures the spirit of the youth at the time.

Cheers...
They also had a wonderful song Turn turn turn which was great too.
Check out the wave speech, fear and loathing in las vegas, scene with Johnny Depp, written by Hunter S Thompson and how he used this song in the background to totally define an entire generational hippie culture in a few paragraphs. May be the best piece Hunter has ever written.
Jessie Collin Young is an American.
That is a truely inspirational song I wish that could be in everyones hearts and the accent you here is a New York east coast accent
