    • @TonysBonsai

      I believe they depend of some kind of fungi in the soil for their survival. Under normal circumstances they shouldn't be completely bare-rooted, that'll remove the beneficial fungi and they are likely to die.
      When repotting, always put some of the spent soil back to make the fungi re-establish the symbiosis with the tree. It's kinda like yeast when you're baking bread; it's essential.

    I bought a mugo with a thick trunk last fall and did a bit of pruning on it. After reading the trouble people have had with the roots, I decide to try the top down method of root development. You take it out of the pot, and then bare root only the top half of the root ball, and leave the bottom half alone. Then it goes back into your nursery pot, with bonsai soil at the top, then leave it alone for a year. It's just an experiment I don't know where it's going to go. And honestly, all the branches that come from one single spot have got me befuddled about a potential styling.

    • @TonysBonsai
      @TonysBonsai  Рік тому

      They really can be tricky trees, and sometimes by the time we get them they are almost too far past the point where we can do anything with them due to chronic inverse taper. I would suggest that you try to visualise something and move towards that in your pruning decisions.

  • @Tinoshke07

    You did the best you could with what you had to work with Tony. If you wouldn't have removed the weevils (if you wouldn't have examined the roots properly) , the plant would have died so it's better to give it a chance to recover by removing all the weevils and it still has some roots so it has a better chance. To balance out the removal of those roots, I would remove a very small part of the branches (just some tips of branches).
    I went to a garden center (yep, my amount of trees is above 20 already now ☺) today and bought me some more trees, no Pines though ( in my opinion they're the most challenging plants to make bonsai if you start from garden center material and they're way more expensive than other plants). I had a look at the Junipers but they were all very flat, like a pancake. So all the plants I bought were deciduous trees or shrubs.

    • @TonysBonsai
      @TonysBonsai  Рік тому +1

      Over 20 trees. Nice! Sounds like the bonsai addiction is taking hold 🤣
      I think you do right avoiding the pines. Along with spruce, I think they are the trickiest trees. You're much better off with deciduous. That being said, over on the continent you can easily buy really nice proper juniper material quite cheaply.

    Definitely interested that you completely bare rooted this one and I understood your thoughts for doing so. The views online are mixed but I have found that there is an underlying consensus that late summer early autumn is the ideal time? I tend to go to Harry Harrington's guides (B4ME) for plants i am unsure about as he is experienced and in the Uk. So far he has been right. But no two trees or conditions are the same so I often throw the dice if neccesity requires it. We can compare results at the end of summer and see how things are going as i did my repots last autumn. Love what you are doing. Cheers

      In my case I don't use calendars at all. I just listen (or watch) the tree. Repotting time in any tree should be when buds swell and barely "explode". Some trees of same species may start this process earlier, others, later. However, when buds swell, you know that the tree is awake and active, meaning it will recover earlier from repotting, creating new roots.

      Yeah, obviously I had no choice repotting this one otherwise I would have waited I think. Harry Harrington is a good guide for sure, but Peter Chan says he does them in spring. I know Peter gets some flack, but he is a commercial grower and he does seem to do well with his mugos. It's a tricky one.

      @@TonysBonsai ua-cam.com/video/WDrhQf0yMxg/v-deo.html David E. says very early or not at all ... so when the nurseries around here start the seasson, it is too late and that is how I killed all the pines when I started doing bonsai, exept for the very young ones, those seem to be OK with late repots and barerooting.

      They do seem quite a tricky tree to keep alive to me.

    And this is how to kill a plant

      Probably, but the wevils had to be dealt with. At least this way it had a chance.
      Putting a little of the spent soil, or even just a little of his garden soil, back in the pot to reintroduce beneficial fungi could have helped it, but I don't even know if the tree survived and where it is now Tony has passed on.

    I also need to work my Mugo today😂 but in my zone we can’t repot these till June/July or they die. Warmer zones can do spring or summer, and the hottest zones do spring.
    Thus the confusion across the whole ‘when to repot Mugos’ - it depends on your base temps during that season.

      I have three other mugos that I have yet to work on, and I think I'll leave them until June just to be on the safe side.
