Jesus did ask God to 'take this cup away from me' in the Garden of Gethsemane. But agreed to go with God's plan if that is his will. So many little things in this rock opera are taken straight from the Bible.

Even out of context of the story Webber & TIM RICE were trying to tell, Ted Neeley's performance brings a tear to my eye. Once you see the movie and see the question the writers posed, the weariness in Ted Neeley's voice makes even more sense. There have many performances but no-one touches Ted Neeley.

Saw Ted Neely when i was 16. Just had gotten the JCS albims at Easter. Got to the venue very early so I would miss traffic. 2 guys came out of the bldg and were playing frisbee. Jesus was both God and human. Gethsemane was His most human moment. An angel came to comfort and strengthened Him. For our sake He went to the cross to pay the price for our sins. At the end He said that the debt was paid in full. The greatest promise we can rest in.

I have one thing to say to that claim: prove it. And remember: the Bible can't be used as proof of the Bible. That's cheating. What would Jesus thing of that? I mean- if he actually existed?

The song "Judas's death" will tear you apart, you need to watch the whole movie. The very beginning, where they pull up in a bus and start unloading props starts to show the personalities of the various characters and sets the stage. As time passes they start to become their characters until they are utterly lost in the story themselves.

God came down from heaven as a man (Jesus) and experienced all the emotions and temptations that an earthly man would, yet He led a sinless life. Be sure to see Jesus Christ Superstar (1973), ; it is well worth the time. I'm 72 years old now, and I must have seen this movie a dozen times in the eighties. It was one of the tools God employed to hold onto me during my time in the wilderness of those sinful years, leading me to salvation in 1985! Another version of this song is "John Farnham - Gethsemane (1992 Australian cast - Sydney final night)" John played Jesus in the Aussie stage production. It is brilliant!

oh man, as someone who has loved that movie since the early 90s (and gotten to meet Ted Neely! genuinely one of the softest and kindest people i have ever met.) i was so dearly enjoying your reaction. the movie is very much set in contemporary (VERY VERY 70s) times and the lyrics reflect that often - but Neely's Jesus - nicknamed "Screaming Jesus" for delightfully obvious reasons - and Carl Anderson's Judas both have such unbelievable power and pathos. i do hope you get a chance to sit and watch the whole thing through one of these days. it's very much concerned with Jesus the man. yes, he's the son of God - but born to a human mother in a human body with human needs. and, as you saw in his moment of doubt and uncertainty in the garden, Ted brings some of the most heartbreaking humanity to the role he is playing. through the movie, it shows his growing discomfort, concern, and even fear with people refusing to hear him explain that he's a man, and instead choosing to believe he is directly God himself. Carl Anderson does an EXQUISITE job of trying desperately to bring Jesus' attention to this before it's too late, and the narrative does an amazing job of showing that the choices he made were for the love of Jesus, the man.
it's VERY 70s, and at times VERY campy. but the parts that hit? hit like this scene in the garden. i do hope you watch it and enjoy it one of these days. ❤

"Superstar" was by far the best of Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Tim Rice's rock opera and in its time was looked on at first as underground music. The first time I heard it in full was under the bedclothes late at night on Radio Luxembourg. This is one of the high points, Jesus last prayers before being arrested and put on trial. Some of the theology is a bit suspect but it still was a heavy influence on many people at the time.

I am not a religious fanatic.but i went on my balcony and Jesus spoke to me. I was so frightened my consciousness was totally different and i thought, i can't go to work. I went on the balcony to drink my morning coffee and all of a sudden i head his voice. When i said i didn't know how i could go to work was after he left. Unless i am delusional i wrote this for those who have lost their faith not my ego! I do not go to church.

The original score is SOOOOO GOOD fell in love with it in college many years ago still sing every word. The movie is a little therw out the with 70's symbolism and spirituality. If you cam see a live production or a video of the original production that would be BEST BESTIE. LOL😂

This is the original Jesus Christ Superstar. It's a Rock opera from the 1970s. Believe it or not this movie brought a lot of people back in the 70s to church. People who would not step foot in a church until they saw this. San Francisco Catholic church saw an influx of young people because this movie spoke to them...

JCSS had a one night showing at the local theatre a couple of years ago, so I took a date who had never heard or seen it. When we left her first comment was she couldn't decide whether or not the movie was sacrilegious. It has that kind of affect on people. I highly recommend seeing it. My favorite song is by Yvonne Elliman who plays Mary Magdalene, "I don't know how to love him". Powerful stuff.

One of my favorite movies ever, I've seen it more times than I can count, know every word to every song. And I had the pleasure of seeing the live production (front row) with both Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson - magical.

Harri, this is an incredible score. My personal favorite recording is the original concept album. It was remastered in 2020 for the 50th anniversary of the show. I think the best film version is the 2000 revival filmed stage production, but that's just my opinion! Hope you get a chance to do a full watch/listen soon. It's great stuff. 🙂

I recommend that you should watch movie from start to finish it’s brilliant how the story is told through songs great lyrics fantastic dancing and the actors played the characters as tho they were the real people back then during Jesus times, I first saw this movie in school back in 1983 when I was just 11 as part as our religious study and have not been disappointed and still continue to watch, at the actors performances what a film and what makes it so special too is it was filmed in Israel on the actual holy ground where Jesus Christ our lord spent his last days and crucified at same location. Truly amazing give it a go. It class as one of my fav musicals along with Les mis, Scrooge and Oliver 😊take care and enjoy!!

I had the album back in the 70s, and I pretty much wore it out even though I had zero belief in God at the time, or maybe a peripheral interest. Saw the movie, too, which was very well done. Both the album and the movie are worth your attention, my friend.

Jesus in the flesh was both fully God and fully man so yes, he had every human emotion, every physical pain. The lyrics don't do justice to his Godly nature but they beautifully capture his humanity.
