    (EDIT: the spanish dub was actually perfomed at Barcelona, sorry for the mistake)
    Fun fact: the european dubs of MGS1 were performed at the Abbey Road Studios (the same place where the Beatles recorded their songs) using voice actors born in France, Germany, Italy and Spain that at the time of the recording lived at London and all the 4 dubs were directed by a french guy under the supervision of Konami's european director.

    • @XanderVJ

      I can't speak for other languages, but the Spanish dub was definitely made in Spain, not London. In Barcelona, to be precise. It's a very well documented fact, since the European Spanish dub of the original MGS was crazy beloved, and it's still considered one of the best Spanish video game VOs of all time. Snake's Spanish voice actor, Alfonso Vallés, is kind of an icon in the Spaniard gaming community. His performance is usually considered better than David Hayter's (Only in the first game, though. Hayter improved as an actor as the series went on, while none of the later MGS games were dubbed in Spanish) and even created some quotes that became memes even back in the late 90s that are still uttered to this day (Snake's "What the..?" was translated as "¡¿Pero qué coño...?", which Vallés delivery made uncannily, but delightfully memorable).
      I don't know where that Italian actor got that information, but it's 100% wrong for the Spanish dub.

    The main reason all of the voice lines were re-recorded for Twin Snakes wasn't the script change, it was because the quality of the PS1 recordings were so bad. Actors said you could hear trucks driving by because the house they were recording from was badly sound-proofed.

    • @PrincessNine
      @PrincessNine 3 роки тому +3

      Sorry. I hate to break it to you. But that was most likely a cover.
      Kojima has had heavier input on the translation process and its noticeable. I'm willing to think that excuse was only partially true in a "if we did, but we never were going to"
      Because its weird that every line was rerecorded but with a slightly different translation of each line and NO one went "why? The old line worked".
      Also why go through the process of re-translation if you intended to use the old voice lines? The story isn't very clean, too many grey areas. Like they planned to recast everyone minus David Hayter and he took a pay cut to get many actors back? Why'd the discussion of recasting come up to begin with [queue David Hayter revealing Kojima has been trying to fire him since mgs3 and the announcement of keifer Sutherland as Snake]

Which was common in the mid 2000s with dubs

    • @mistermista2927
      @mistermista2927 6 років тому +32

      I'm honestly mixed about the whole thing if I'm being honest. MGS1's English dialogue is the best written in the whole series, and that is entirely due to Blaustein. Honestly I think the line change when Mantis said he felt nostalgic could've entirely been a mistake, as he wouldn't have really had the knowledge Kojima originally had when writing the game and as a result without the context he figured "nice" would be a better fit. The Mei Ling thing even Kojima admitted was smart and a necessity, and the line about Big Boss "being in a coma" when Les Enfants Terribles happened is 100% either a mistake or something Kojima decided he was okay with anyway, as it stuck in The Twin Snakes. I wish Blaustein was able to stick around, but with better communication between himself and Kojima. A lot of the clunky dialogue of the later games could have been avoided and performances would undoubtedly have been better as a result.

    • @WindyCornerTV
      @WindyCornerTV 6 років тому +26

      As someone who has played both the original Ps1 release Twin snakes, I agree. The dialogue and acting in Metal Gear Solid became really clunky with the more literal translation work after Blaustein was dropped. Also Twin Snakes had its own alterations with the cut-scenes like Snake back-flipping off the missile and Snake threatening Baker with a gun because he forgot the code. So it's not really 100% true to Kojima's original vision.
      I'm not advocating for heavy localisation with name changes, ala DiC's Sailor Moon dub. But the reality is most literal translations just don't flow well and Kojima doesn't has the native knowledge of how people speak in English or other languages like German. People have gotten too caught up in this anti-censorship mentality to realise that literal translations really do more harm to a product in the long run.
      Honestly if I was making a game and it was localised in our languages, I would prefer the localisation work insured the dialogue is written like it came from a native speaker of the language. I want the localisation to help people enjoy my game, not pander to my ego.

    I recon the underpants thing could be based on regional differences regarding nudity. In Japan (from this laman's perspective) it seems that being stripped down to underwear is more strongly associated with being shamed than in the west, so being completely stripped for the west perhaps gives more accurate translation of what that position was going for. Notice also that Japan avoids explicit nudity more so than the west.

  • @JohnnyUndaunted
    @JohnnyUndaunted 6 років тому +5

    A correction: Blaustein and Kojima didn't work together on the Sega CD version of Snatcher. That version of the game was developed by another Konami team. Kojima was busy working on the PC-98 and 3DO versions of Policenauts at the time and didn't work on any of the later Snatcher versions.
    I always questioned the whole supposed controversy regarding Blaustein's "firing" from the MGS. For one thing, he was never fired from the series (he wasn't even employed by Konami anymore by that point and was working with them on a contractual basis) , they simply never hired him again. Kojima nor Scott Dolph (who was the person who had issues with Blaustein) never gave their side of the story, but the way Blaustein talks about the situation makes him comes off as a primadonna.
    Also, the script changes in Twin Snakes are kinda blown off proportions too. Outside or two lines, the script in TTS doesn't really deviate from the MGS1 translation that much.

    You forgot to tell that Meryl says she was raped by Ocelot in the Japanese version when Snakes saves her during the good ending.
    Can't tell about other dubs, but English dub removed the dialogue, Italian dub still kinda still says something about it, but without telling exactly what happened.
    Also, Spanish dub censored the word "Drug" during a codec call, replacing the word with a buzzing sound in the audio and the word "Medicine" in the script, they also censored the infamous Ocelot's "silver bullet" line.
    French version didn't censore anything, but they changed the script, a lot actually (and, most of the times, not for the best), German dub was poorly translated and also the voice acting wasn't amazing, Italian dub as far as I know is fine and overall the best one, the voice acting wasn't mindblowing (for today standards), but it was way ahead of its time, probably the best Italian dub on a videogame at the time, the only issue is that they messed up a pair of words during translation, but nothing major or game changing really...
    Also Spanish had a good translation, the only issue is the censorship and, sometimes, they didn't have a great voice acting when they needed to scream, but for the most part it was perfectly fine.

      Ev'ixyn only for aesthetics. The cutscenes were cool or cheesy, depending on your mood. The gameplay was less challenging because you had all the advantages from MGS2 while the stages were exactly the same from the PS1 version. It’s kind of a toss up.

    Interesting, thanks for bringing insight to these changes!. I'm a big MGS fan and for me, the best version will always be the Spanish dub for PlayStation. I've nothing against David Hayer and the other actors, who I grew to appreciate after playing the other games, but I could never play MGS1 without those excellent performances in Spanish ever since I heard them for the first time when I was a kid.
    It's really too bad we couldn't get those actors to come back for more Spanish dubs in the other games but I'm glad they exist in the first place because of Kojima's vision.

      @@stevedoidoultimate4815 You probably havn't heard many german dubs, they are not great and if I can I choose englihs over german (or japanese if that's the original voice over). Only good thing about german localizations is that they are usually closer to the original script and not as meme infused as some american localizations are, but I don't need a german dub for that, german text is enough.

    There were at least two passengers in the mini water craft ejected from the underwater craft in Metal Gear Solid. A completely different story. And no "Lynxes"/"Ocelots" with "flashbacks". Truly Stealth Espionage Action; not semi-realistic ego-centric fantasy game carnival.

      The cutscenes were redone in a non-Metal Gear fashion. It felt like a stupid action film, Snake behaved like he's not Snake. The gameplay was good, because it was the well known MGS game in the advanced MGS2 engine but I had to skip cutscenes because I couldn't stand them.
