    This was very helpful. Tyvm. I've only just added skincare in the past couple of months. Started slowly bc sometimes my face will break out from products. (especially moisturizer). I had the Kiehls microdose one on my Sephora list already. Retenoid will be the next thing I add. The Kiehls is a bit $$ but sounds perfect.
    If I chose to be more budget conscious, after watching this I'm torn between the Olay 24 & the Roc you showed. You mentioned tho that the Roc doesn't have the strength listed? How strong would you say it is in comparison to the Olay?

    Thank you so much for this video! Wow what a relief it was to hear that i only need two/3 products and many other super helpful things I did not know and which helped me avoid some
    Mistakes I would certainly made if I hadnt watched this.
    I have a question - have you heard about medik 8 retinal? It seems to have simillar active ingredients as Avene. It is more expensive though.
    So if I use Avene - is this my retinal and moisturizer in one? So i dont need to use any othet cream afterwards? And if i decide to use prescription tetinoids- could you recommend any moisturizer ?
    Im 37 and currently using retinol 0,03 and my skin tolerates it perfectly. Im planning to go up to 0.1 avene or medik 8 but im worried that in 10-15 years i wont have anything to offer to my skin? If im already using the best possible anti- aging products. If my skin gets used to it, how can i treat it later? Are my worries justified?
    I will be very grateful for your reply!

      @@TheBudgetDermatologist We appreciate your practical tips. I changed my approach to skin care after I subscribed to your channel.
      I have dry, eczema prone skin complicated by monthly hormonal pimples. I used to follow the Korean skin care fad of 8-10 steps. Which is time consuming, pricey, and I even ended up with more pimples and pimple marks.
      Now, I am just following the basics:
      AM:
      Salicylic acid or Benzoyl Peroxide Cleanser (I use BP cleanser a week prior to my period).
      Cerave AM moisturizer with spf 30
      PM:
      Micellar water to remove sunscreen
      Cetaphil cleanser
      Olay Retinol Serum
      Cerave PM moisturizer
      No more layering of toners, essences, emulsion, ampoules and masks.
      You are absolutely correct that simpler routine works better: easier compliance and it delivers results. I managed my hormonal acne better with this approach.
      Thank you so much!

    • @TheBudgetDermatologist
      @TheBudgetDermatologist  3 роки тому +12

  • @SupagalSimmi
    @SupagalSimmi 3 роки тому +256

    Step 1: Is the retinoid right for you?
    Step 2: Pick your retinoid product. Types; Prescribed and over the counter. (Consistency and strength) High concentration = more irritation.
    Step 3: Put it in skincare properly (night with moisturiser, not with vitamin c and benzoyl peroxide)
    Step 4: Start slowly (use once and wait for few days watching out for irritation/redness, then use three times a week and dont use too much)
    Step 5: Be consistent.

    I bought myself a Christmas gift -- a Retinoid! I found an affordable Retinaldehyde product online in the Avene line, it's called Woman Cleanance Night Smoothing Cream. I bought it from Caretobeauty for 22 US dollars. It's more affordable than Avene Retrinal. Maybe it has lower concentration of retinaldehyde. Just waiting for it to get delivered. Thank you for these videos. My mother passed along generally good skin genes and my skincare routine has always been above-average but not always the best. I mostly used Lab Series and Clinique for Men once I was able to afford them but moved to drugstore brands as they've improved. Your videos help instill confidence in drugstore brands (although my dermatologist provides me with a prescription tretinoin solution), and your emphasis on consistency is comforting because I've been consistent for almost 40 years, beginning in my 20s. Being a mid-Boomer, having northern European/British Isles genes, and coming of age during the 60s and 70s and the "get that deep, dark, native tan" era, I did plenty of sun damage to my skin during my youth. My Navy career probably didn't help much and I'm also a life-long avid outdoors athlete. However, my facial complexion receives compliments, the most gratifying being along the lines of "You look like a person who spends a lot of time outdoors, but one who takes good care of his skin." A melanoma on my shoulders, back, or lower extremities isn't out of the question, and I'm 67 now and not far from getting on my final glideslope, but my arrival at the gate should be with a decent countenance. Dear Dr, please make videos for us people of skin of colour. Lots of things that work for Caucasian skin tones don't seem to work for many of us. I'm not a Dermatologist myself. As a medical student I was not bright enough to be able to enter my much desired and loved competitive specialty Dermatology. Yet, I have a lot of patients asking me lots of questions that I don't have training and wisdom about. I recommend and refer them to your UA-cam videos, because I am a fan of yours because you are honest, sincere, dignified, respectful, budget friendly and very understanding and approachable to whom our general public can relate to easily. 🙏

    I dont really care about skincare but wanted to up my game since after looking closely at my skin one day I realized how uneven and discolored it looks after dealing with acne and sun exposure for several years. I always research before I buy anything and usually go through multiple sources and I have to say you have made learning about skincare and the best products to use so easy. You seem so genuine and knowledgable and your videos are so simple and easy to understand. Thank you so much for your videos and I cant wait to see how far this channel goes. You are saving a lot of the males out there who are clueless about skincare like me!

    This is the first time I've heard a derm recommend the OTC versions which is great because its a great way to desensitise your skin and work up to tretanoin. I didn't do this, but can see the reasoning. If you are really sensitive, and think you might react, having a 1cm patch of extremely irritated skin is much easier to manage than your whole face, so start with a test patch. I learned this after being prescribed tretanoin over 50 years from the age of 9 (back then it was an oil). Over the years, each time I had to see a derm for rosacea or cystic acne, it would be prescribed again. I was never successful, couldn't get past the first application. More recently, a GP prescribed it for "anti-aging". Now, thanks to UA-cam and all the support groups on social media and also COVID lockdown, I summonsed the courage to try again, this time starting with a test spot the size of my finger on the right side of my face and used it as advised (once a week for the first month, then twice a week for the next month, then three times etc). Incredibly, it worked like it was supposed to, eventually not being so reactive. That gave me the confidence to start a spot on the left hand side, and repeat the process.
    The marvellous thing about tretanoin is that it travels, so a finger sized spot actually is double that size due to the product travelling. Slowly, the treatment area was expanded in ever widening circles, the immediate skin around it was already semi-adjusted, so it didn't take as long for that area, then the next. It probably took about 6 months in all to be able to tolerate it. Even now after another twelve months, I am still on only 3 times a week, although sometimes I might give it a rev up on the weekends applying it twice in a row.

    I was getting deep cyst like acne. Like just one deep bump under my skin. My Dermatologist gave me the vague answer that these were most likely caused by "anti-aging products". I generally do not have acne and I have very dry skin. (not a skincare Doctor but for my annual skin cancer screening). I am still not sure what ingredient he was referring to but I have stopped all of my "anti-aging" products. I will try your advice here and start one of these items slowly. Thank You.

    How about in a eye cream? Should this be applied on dry skin or after a serum has fully absorbed and dried on the skin?
    What about using aha moisturizer in the AM after using a retinol at night?

    • @kellydang541
      @kellydang541 3 роки тому +3

      I think you’d better use aha moiturizor the other day. For exampl you use retinoid on mon/wed/fri PM. Then aha moisturizor on tue/thu/sat am becoz aha is form of acid in moisturizor cream for removing dead skins. Shall not use acid in am & retinoid in pm same day. Its too much for your skin.

      Yes, what I see often is that if someone is getting irritated from the retinoid, it may be due to other irritating products they are using as well. So sometimes it is better to simplify the routine while adding in the retinoid until well established and then layer more products in after.

    Do you have any recommendations for switching from nightly use of .2% encapsulated retinol to .1% adapalene? My 15-year-old has been using retinol nightly for over 6 months (with a couple of months slow transition before) with no real progress on his acne. Derm also had him using cerave benzoyl cleanser beforehand, wondering if we should switch that to a gentle cleanser. He never had any issues with irritation. Thanks so much!!

    Thank you for breaking everything down! I was prescribed retinoids as a teen with acne and they always made my face way more red and flaky. All the dermatologist ever said was that I just had to wait out the redness and it would eventually get better. But I'm an impatient person and would just stop using it. I had no idea that I was applying it too soon after washing my face and that it probably would have helped to use a moisturizer first. I also didn't know to start super super slow either. I'm going to give it another go!
