Outstanding review! Because of reviews like this, I'm able to approach my purchase choices with much more informed decisions; thus leading to less waisted cash, and for that reason I have to say thanks for all your great advice. I know that MIP does awesome photography, but I also know that wise financial allocation toward these products is highly important for the advancement of a photography business, that being said, your advice is impeccable, and I'm possitive that the creative community in your area appreciates you for this. I sure do!

Hey Jeremy, it's Wade! Thanks for your in-depth assistance, at Bedford, with the Sennheiser G4 lavalier > Sony a7iii!

35mm is my favorite focal length so I spent the extra money to get the GM. I have the Sigma 50mm f1.4 DG DN and it is a stellar optic, it is also really close the gm performance especially since the Sigma 50mm has linear motors.

The new Sigma lenses are awesome too! I have been looking forward to testing the new Sigma 50mm f/1.2 DG DN and comparing it to the 50mm f/1.4 GM.

Perhaps (some do..) its aperture-ring locking function also prevents to slip into the A, and not only controls the remaining in it.
(I believe, but am not sure anymore, that Gerald Undone found the DN f1.4 to be problematic in the near ('macro') range. (info to be checked if you feel concerned.)
(For haters of the aperture-ring: just tape it tight all-round.)
(Myself I keep the f1.2 for it's f1.2 rendering I love/want. Then from f4 to11, it is for me equal to the GM. Of course I don't like it's bulk and size - but superbly made)

Both outstanding lenses with slightly different strengths and weaknesses, the E-Mount has a plethora of 35MM lenses available now across the price spectrum. The GM is hard to beat but comes at a premium price.

focus range ring can be programed to shorter or longer movement.

On the Sigma? While it is possible to customize the focus throw on the L-Mount version of this lens you can't on the E-Mount version. Sigma makes an L-Mount USB dock that makes such customization possible but they don't make an E-Mount version of the USB dock. Fun fact: According to what I have been told this is a stipulation placed on Sigma by Sony, Sigma isn't allowed to release an E-Mount USB Dock, have E-Mount teleconverters, or allow their lenses to shoot burst faster than 15 fps.

Hi @@JeremySmithPhotography I have the l-mount USB dock. I can do some customization but I can not customize the AF-L button which is the reason I bought the dock. I tried in both 35mm and 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art

While I am aware of the USB dock for L-Mount I haven't tested it myself, if I get my hands on it I will report back. @@sakavouras

Nice! You will really enjoy it, it's amazing how much better it is than the original Sigma Art series 35 from 2012!

I bought, used and returned the GM after a month. During that month, the Sigma came out. It is now the lens I use 50% of the time. It's my go-to lens! It's better built, just as sharp - for the $$$ is a far better buy. The GM is lighter, but the non-locking aperture ring bugs me - not to mention the price difference (for me it was $700).

The GM is sharper. Perhaps you had a decentred copy.

@@JeremySmithPhotography Pay once, cry once. The Sony is ever so slightly better in terms of sharpness and bokeh rendering. One or two other reviewers have confirmed this very slight difference. Another plus is the slightly smaller size of the Sony when travel or street work is considered.
