    If the photography market is in jeopardy, it is not the customer's fault, it is the camera and lens makers' fault, they failed to be creative and introduce innovative products; they have been too busy trying to explain amateur and pro photographers what they need, as they obviously know better. Some companies have prospered in this kind of environment, like Sigma, producing high quality innovative products at a reasonable price.
    Mr Yamaki, the owner, put his face every day where his product is, taking responsibilities for what his company does; have you ever heard him discrediting Canon or Nikon lenses ? He is the first one to praise them when they produce something great, showing no fear for competition. He deserves a lot of credit for this.
    Another great video Hugh, congratulations.

    Their DC DN crop sensor trio has single handedly transformed Sony APS-C and Canon EF-M overnight, as well as add fantastic options for M4/3. Then they've managed to do the same with the 35/1.2, 45/2.8, 14-24/2.8, 24-70/2.8 and 85/1.4 for L mount. Truly hitting it out of the park, and marrying the high quality of the old Art beasts with better usability.

    Smaller lens sizes are most welcome: glad Sigma is doing this. Putting old dSLR sized lenses on modern cameras is like putting grandma clothes on a supermodel. Very few want to carry 5 pound systems anymore.

      I disagree. I have several Leica R lenses that adapt very well to my SL. The performance is stellar. While not as clinically perfect as the SL lenses, they are better at rendering accurate images straight out of the camera with no post processing (if I do my part right). I have increased my R lens collection recently as most new lenses aren't as good at producing pleasing images that do not require post processing. Very few reviewers of new lenses show unedited photos. Most are doctored, edited, just like the supermodels; not the real deal.

    Sigma is one of those rare "Photography for Photographers" companies. They listen to the right people that truly help them make great products. Years ago when I shot full-frame, their 24-70mm was my go-to lens for events.
    I saw a fantastic beauty and portrait photographer adapt the Canon version of this lens to his Panasonic S1R. The result: F.A.N.T.A.S.T.I.C! Blew me away how good it was. Show me the same picture shot with a Phase One/Hassy and a FF camera and I can pretty easily tell the difference. But I have to wonder if Panasonic is going for the MF look. Too often I look at images from the S1R and a great lens attached and have to wonder.... The difference is significantly smaller than it was 2 years ago.
    I've pretty much resigned to the fact that I'll be getting an S1H next year for my video aspirations. I only wanted m43 for my most of my workload and MF for high-end jobs. But both the S1H and S1R are so damn good....

    I would like to see a head to head comparison of the SL 90 to the Sigma 85. It seems that no one is willing to anger Leica, or jeopardize their place in the Leica fold by daring to compare and show us unedited, unmodified side by side comparisons of the same shot in the same light.

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  3 роки тому

      I don't have a 90 in-house to compare them, but I DID buy the 85 knowing that if I could have afforded the 90, the 90 would be the last lens I'd ever buy at that focal length. With this written -- as in most things -- marginal improvements in performance at the very top end almost always cost dramatically more. Apple's M1 chip is a distinct outlier in this regard. :)

    Your comments about how companies seem to feel about and treat their customers is how I felt when Leica abruptly dropped the R line completely and without any forewarning of the planned change in direction of their products. I felt ripped off and abused having just invest many thousands of dollars (equivalent to over $35000 today) in new gear only to have Leica abruptly drop all support less than a year later. They were producing and marketing those very expensive lenses and cameras all the while planning to drop us without warning or consideration. The new SL was introduced without any adapter to use our excellent and fairly new R lenses. The 3rd party manufacturers saw the opportunity and made adapters, but Leica would not properly support the R customer base. They did ultimately offer us an adapter, but it was $400 for a simple tube?!?! Yet they made the M digital system fully backwards compatible with all the old M lenses. I could go on, but I think the point and bitter taste left in my mouth by Leica is clear

    I'm glad that Sigma is finally realizing that their big, heavy doorstop lenses don't sell in today's mirrorless world. They are getting their lunch eaten by Tamron. I have the 85 1.4 on pre-order! I hope they re-do the 105 1.4 someday soon.

    • @michaelkhalsa
      @michaelkhalsa Рік тому

      Yet some of those doorstops and replacements for weight lifting are beyond awesome. I hope they do keep making some of them (as DG DN). For example, I can take the 28mm f1.4 and make it the center of a kit, with light primes either side. With that particular lens i use a voigtlander 21mm f3.5 or else a sigma 16-28 f2.8 on the wide side, and a sigma 45mm 2.8 on the other side, plus perhaps a sammy 75mm 1.8.
      While 900 grams is heavy, it works if there is only one with you at a time. Most days i would rather have one truly, no compromise exceptional lens on me, even if heavy, than several good, but not stellar lenses with me. So it might be a 135mm, or a 40mm as the central lens, and then lighter primes each side.
      I also hope they redo the 105 f1.4. And if possible the 40mm as DG DN with same optical greatness, but closer minimum focus distance (and of course a bit lighter).

  • @petevb
    @petevb 4 роки тому

    I’m confused, and honestly blown away, by the size difference between this 85mm F1.4 and Sigma’s own 35mm F1.2. Both are fresh DN designs but the 35mm weighs 75% more than the 85mm. Compare that to the Sony 35mm 1.8 vs 85mm 1.8 where the 35 weighs nearly 25% less while being more optically complex (11 elements vs 9) and arguably sharper. Obviously with the Sigma we’re comparing a 1.2 vs a 1.4 but the difference still doesn’t quite compute.
    Either way I’m very impressed that this new 85mm 1.4 was apparently able to significantly improve on the state of the art in an where so many have already tried- it honestly makes the 85 GM look a little long of tooth... Impressed enough that I pre-ordered yesterday.

    I do a fair bit of low light photography so I'm currently waiting to see if anyone is going to do a T-Stop comparison with the 85 GM. According to DxO the the Sony is quite a bit closer to the theoretical maximum than the existing Sigma 1.4/85 so I hope the new optical formula of the DG DN looses less light along the way.

    Somewhat off topic, and yet not entirely: I've been holding off on joining the L-mount FF system, waiting to see if someone produces a smaller body with EVF and mech shutter. These smaller Sigma primes would suit such a body perfectly. I love that they're giving us aperture rings, smaller and lighter, and great IQ. And just imagine the unique image quality should said future body happen to contain a Foveon sensor...... Then again, can I wait that long? Perhaps a used S1 beckons, to keep the G9 company? Hold that thought.....

    I am sure that I have said it before but I am not the biggest Sigma fan and I will never recommend their products, for precisely the reasons you respect them because by experience was very different. That said, I was impressed with the new Sigma 85mm and the reviews have been very positive (with maybe the exception of the barrel distortion (something easily fixed).
    What really pleased me, to hear was that they built a smaller lens. My big criticism of the Sigma 105mm f/1.4 art was it was so big and heavy, it wouldn't be a lens I would want to go out and shoot with. Sigma hopefully has learnt and going with the smaller lighter form factor will be putting that into their other lenses.
    As I said I personally wouldn't recommend their equipment but if someone is happy using it, I am happy for that person and I hope the lens is a great success.

    Love this lens IQ but hate it’s AF performance. It cannot keep up with A7M3’s AF at 10fp( only getting 5fps with shutter release priority set to focus), will be a total AF anchor to the A1’s 240hz AF engine. Will probably have to sell it when a 85mm f1.4 GM mark2 with dual linear motors come out. Hate the thought of only being able to do 20fps at 135mm with the A1 (I avoid 12bit 30fps). 50mm GM also long due!

    I have to laugh a little about the "BECAUSE PHYSICS" people who a few years ago insisted full frame mirrorless lenses were bigger than DSLR lenses because of some immutable law nobody ever heard of that said "you take away from the body and you have to give it back to the lens."
    There is at least one trade-off I have heard of about this specific lens-- that they had to allow for some vignetting at the closer focus distances that they could have eliminated by making the lens bigger. I doubt that will make much of a difference to anyone looking to purchase it.

    One thing that particularly annoys me is the people who go onto the internet and mark what I imagine they think are "smart" comments, panning the products of the companies that produce the gear that fuels our profession or our hobby.
    I was raised on the mantra that "If you haven't anything nice to say, just don't say ANYTHING!" Saying nasty things about their products could actually cause severe damage to their business. And in these difficult times, for the entire industry, to do that to any company would be unforgiveable.
    Looking specifically at SIGMA, I do have their 50 mm ART - it is brilliant. I also have my Zeiss Otus 55mm - it is brilliant too. Which do I prefer? The Zeiss - I've been in love with Zeiss glass all my life, and bought the SIGMA first, but couldn't resist the Otus. (Even my spectacles have Zeiss lenses!) Why keep the SIGMA? - well sometimes I need an AF, and anyway I already have it - for me, buying it is not an issue.
    I don't share your knowledge of MTF charts - but I see from DxO's reviews that the SIGMA 85mm ART is rated slightly ahead of the Otus 85mm.
    So - where does that leave me?
    Well - the SIGMA 50mm is way lighter - the Otus 55mm produces the most fantastic images - I've never done a straight comparison of the same shot, side by side, and don't intend to - I know when I want to use which of them anyway.
    You see, at this level, arguing over which is what is utter bilge. The camera's sensor is more of an issue. The pixel rating of whatever screens the shots are viewed on is a FAR more compelling limitation. The DPI rating of the size at which you print the shots is far more important. The SIZE at which you're going to print the images is far more important.
    The only reservations I have about SIGMA are short and simple.
    I did have the SIGMA ART 24mm - unfortunately it had severe back focus problems - a score of 19 out of a maximum possible adjustment on my cameras of 20 - I might have been prepared to keep it, and do the adjustment, if it had been only 1 or 2, but for me that was out of the ball park. That of course can happen with ANY manufacturer so I am not blaming SIGMA and it was sorted long ago (I replaced that lens with the Otus 28mm - which is probably just as much a reflection of my mania for Zeiss as anything else).
    And I just tried - too late, it seems - to buy the SIGMA 150mm macro with an F mount for my Nikons. Unfortunately SIGMA has discontinued it and the only one left at my camera store had a Canon mount. The replacement 180 mm version is too long in focal length, too bulky and too heavy for MY purposes - none of which reflects in any way on the lens itself - it simply means it isn't what I personally want.
    Having said that - part of the reason I have kept the 50mm ART is that the lens is utterly brilliant. I stood on the top of the Arc de Triomphe with it, one morning, and photographed something 5 kilometres (roughly 3 miles) away - hand held, at 1/100th of a second. When I reviewed the image, I was stunned - the only limitation on the sharpness of that photo was the pixel size, which is ENTIRELY the sensor, not the lens. You could, nevertheless, still read the names on the buildings - even at that distance! Nobody could seriously ask for or expect more. So I have nothing but admiration for the quality of SIGMA's ART range of glass.
    And SIGMA doesn't just make glass. They also make cameras. The Quattro, for example. With their Foveon sensor. Which I want to try. Except that they've leaked it out that they have a new one in the pipeline. With a sensor that is larger in size than the ones currently available in their Quattro range. So because my main objective in chasing after a Foveon is better image quality, I've been holding off and haven't bought one - waiting for the new model, with the larger Foveon sensor. I don't "need" any more gear - I am just fascinated by this, so I "want" one. And will place my order the instant it's released!

    I'll probably buy one too, even though I already own its predecessor in F mount! The concern I have is the distortion - pincushion distortion at that. Are those MTF charts pre or post correction? I find it very hard to believe it'll still be as sharp as the older lens after interpolating pixels in the central area of the frame. Anyway, I currently own six Sigma Art lenses, I've got a seventh coming tomorrow, and I've had a further two that I owned a while then sold!

And leading from that question, do you have any tips for someone wanting to build up their talking and presentation skills? Is this something you had to hone or did it come naturally? Hi Hugh, as it is focus by wire and AF might not be amazing, do you know if you can program the focus throw like panasonic lenses on the L-mount? Great to learn a bit about the company, thanks :-) and love the message of voting with your money, which is so easily forgotten when we talk specs and technical performance. I hope sigma do more of this design of prime lenses with the aperture ring and that they either work well with L-mount AF or that the focus by wire is linear. Thanks again.

    It's not just you Hugh. Companies are aware and are engaging in marketing that focus on things other than the products they are selling. Plenty of the jumped on the BLM movement when it became "safe". Sigma may not be be marketing by pandering to the current social themes, as much as selling a feeling along with their technically competent gear with a natural balance that seems to have landed with you.
    The new Sigma 85 seems nice and the only knock on it is the pin cushion distortion. A little bit on a portrait oriented lens might not be bad. Looking forward to your review. As far as social distancing making the focal length also good for street work, I always favored giving subjects some breathing room, pandemic or not. 😅

    Ever since they started the Art series of lenses, Sigma really has been on such a tear. I'd love to see them design more glass for MFT (even if it's just re-fitted APS-C glass, begrudgingly). The 56 1.4 is still high on my list - for *after* this whole ordeal is over.
