Fun fact from before your time.... When Rick's first hit came out, it was on the radio for a bit before the music video came out.... And when the video came out, everyone I knew was shocked he was white.
Yuppers! I was there with you! But I had a bit of a softer bump, as I learned that Bobby Caldwell (RIP Bobby) was white in the late 70's! then I knew Boz Scaggs was white and also Michael McDonald (his bio is great). And it made me feel great as a young black girl in London...
You must listen to Rick's big hit "CRY FOR HELP," and check out his shoulder-length hair and the choir of awesome backup singers, too! A hauntingly beautiful song!
This is the sound of Stock/Aitken/Waterman. They were huge producers in the 80s, and while we had some hits in the US, they were massive in the UK. Stateside, we know them from Bananarama, Dead Or Alive, and Kylie Minogue's early hits. To really dive into Rick Astley, one should check out Cry for Help, The Ones You Love, Hopelessly, and Keep Singing.
"Cry For Help" is my favorite Rick Astley song and y'all will be shocked if you react to it. Not only is it a beautiful song, but Rick Astley looks completely different with long hair! I suggest that be your next reaction song. You'll love the song!
I LOVE this song too!! I was an American college student who was studying abroad for a year in Seville, Spain when this was a massive hit song. They played it in the El Rio dance club in Seville A LOT. The floor would pack full when it was played. It still instantly reminds me of Spain!! ❤
Rick Astley does amazing ballads. I'd say his voice is more suited for them. My favorites are, "It Would Take a Strong, Strong Man," "Hopelessly" and "Cry For Help "
The 1980’s were the last great decade: The last decade when it was OK to be joyful, OK to be an individualist, OK to unpretentiously pursue the beautiful.
OK to be joyful in the 90´s too. Especially in music because girl- and boy bands then starting off with equally catchy bubbly songs like this one. Individualist and pursue beautiful not so much (though when was that ever a goal shown except for in advertisement)?
Something happened with the music industry around 1995, this kind of music disappeared and rap and hip-hop was the next big thing! Fortunately we still have all these songs and music videos to enjoy!
Rick rocks! ‘It Would Take A Strong Strong Man’ is another top 10 hit classic from the 80’s! In the early 90’s his last hit ‘Cry For Help’ Awesome reaction👍🏼
I was in a record shop when he was on the scene and a black gal came in to buy his album and was audibly shocked when she saw a white guy on the cover of the album. I thought he was a brother, she declared. We all laughed and she bought the album and left.
"It Would Take a Strong Strong Man"...another Top 10 hit by Rick Astley, as was "Hopelessly" and "Cry for Help" (You already did "She Wants to dance with Me"). "Together Forever" is also a #1 hit- it is also a classic and you still hear it quite often on the radio. However, Never Going to Give You Up, became a cultural phenomenon.
Believe it or not, Rick is good friends with David Groel and the Foo Fighters. There are videos of Rick and the Fighters on stage together singing Never Gonna Give You Up...cool stuff 😊
LOVE this!! Pure 1980s-the BEST decade! ! That voice and always a catchy beat. Rick Astley's singing always made me want to get out on the dance floor and have fun.
His voice is STILL phenomenal and wish he had put out a free more songs back then but he’s shown he’s a great musician and singer - he did a fantastic New Year’s Eve concert for the BBC this year which was fantastic! He’s great fun when he performs! ❤
Dude can sing, and can STILL sing! Sidenote: Rick is a huge Smiths fan and covers the Smiths’ tunes live a lot with a band called Blossoms. Check those videos out on UA-cam. You won’t be sorry!
Stock Aitken and Waterman were huge producers back in the 80s and 90s. They grabbed young pop singers and rocketed them to fame, writing a lot of the songs too. Such stars as Kylie Minogue, Samantha Fox and Rick were in their stable. They just had the 'formula' for pop songs.
I was hoping someone was going to mention this. I was a kid at that time, The Hit Factory totally dominated the charts. They introduced new artists (e.g Kylie, Rick Astley) and took already popular ones to new heights (eg Bananarama). Their songs all had a very familiar, infectious sound and you could pretty much just interchange the singers. Lots of the artists went on to greater success afterwards, but SAW definitely built their foundations.
A great pop song from the 80’s. Takes me back to my childhood. He has a powerful voice and still does the odd show, but is now mainly a radio dj here in the UK.
Here’s from my neck of the woods in the uk. Go Rick. If I remember rightly Pete waterman had a lot to do with producing it.. he’s also from my area.. northwest uk
A lot of younger people may only know Rick Astley for his song "Never Gonna Give You Up," due to the popularity of the "Rick Roll" meme, but he's so much than just the "Rick Roll" guy. "Together Forever" was a big hit back in the day, going to #1 on the charts in multiple countries. Not to mention, Rick Astley has a tremendous singing voice. Songs such as "It Would Take a Strong Strong Man," "Cry for Help," and "Hopelessly" really showcase his vocal talent.
As far as the mid-80’s to early 90’s go S.A.W. (Stock-Aitken-Waterman) we’re some of the best Producers of Pop Music there was. Anything by them pretty much gave you a number one hit in England, and subsequently in Australia too - especially with Kylie Minogue, and at the time Jason Donovan.
Rick was on the BBC on New Years Eve in the UK. He rang in 2024 for us and yes everyone joined in with Never Gonna Give You Up. He is at the moment enjoying a surge in popularity with his new music.
Great music, classic 80’s pop. The formula you identified was the work of 80s pop writers and producers Stock Aitken and Waterman from the Hit Factory studios. They were responsible for so many hits for Kylie Minogue, Bananarama, Rick Astley and so many more! 😊👍
The formula to the sound was from the producers Stock, Aitken and Waterman who produced a series of massive hits in the eighties such as ‘Never gonna give you up,’ You spin me round,’ ‘Respectable’ and better the devil you know’ to name a few! Rick Astley is fantastic still!
I love Rick Astley even today. His newer stuff is really good! All written, recorded, and produced by him. Y'all would love his video of Angels on My Side. It's really cute and corny.
This is dance music, pop music from the 80s. We hit the club every Friday night after work. Big hair, smoldering makeup, shoulder pads and spiked heels. Guys dressed in suits and pick you up in an old jalopy. Groups of friends meeting at the club. Gosh it was such a fun time.
Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters brought him out on stage at a couple of their concerts to sing Never Gonna Give You Up and it was pretty cool to see Foo Fighters fans singing along
Seeing Amber's shirt had me checking to see if you two ever reacted to "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" and it looks like you haven't??? If that's true, I hope you decide to check it out. After that, you'll want to check out Tom Jones as a judge on The Voice with the son of Lonnie Donegan (who wrote the song) as a contestant. You'll be in for a very pleasant and moving surprise if you do.
Another infectious song written and produced by Stock/Aitken/Waterman, who were unstoppable in the mid- to late-1980s. They also did songs for Bananarama, Dead or Alive, Samantha Fox, Kylie Minogue, etc., etc.
Great happy dance song. Listen to your audience and hear " Cry for Help" another side of Rick Ashley. It has this Amazing Soulful/gospel sound. Its really a beautiful song. I also love " It would take a strong man" I love you guys. Incredible energy and beautiful family.
I listened to his first album on cassette so much that it wore out and broke! No worries, I had a back-up cassette AND when it was released on CD I made sure I got one of those too! When summer vacations rolled around and the road trips began his was the first album that went into the cassette/CD boom box! Our 1989 Toyota 4Runner didn't come equipped with a cassette player so the co-pilot rode with the boom box on their lap and played DJ for the rest of us.😂 Fun fact: Rick just turned 58 on Feb. 6th! He can still belt those tunes out like it was yesterday. He didn't know what being Rick Rolled meant and had to ask his teenage daughter. He loves to tell that story in his interviews.
Back in the 80's, you just couldn't have a party without a few Rick Astley tracks... You may not think so, but Rick does some gospel singing from time to time.... He is still current, and had a UK No1 album on his 50th birthday..... His musical style has changed a little since the 80's, although he is still popular, and appears on TV often....
Rick Astley is awesome, Never gonna give you Up and Together Forever are my two favorite songs of 1987 Rick was the king of English pop during the late 1980's.
Blue Eyed Great Britain Soul…A Voice That will just knock you out. His voice is tremendous. Handsome, Can Dance, and apparently been faithfully married for decades. What A Voice and a Man!
There’s a Live version of NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP, live from Glastonbury online where like 500,000 people are all singing this together and the on stage dancers are all just crazy
His first album was part of the whole Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW) factory sound. They produced Bananarama, Dead or Alive, Donna Summer and Kylie Minogue. They really knew how to create great songs and their sound can really be heard in all these artists. Great pop music! Congrats by the way on hitting 500,000 subscribers!!!! Awesome! I love your channel.
I love this song and this man has a wonderful voice. I remember when this song first came out people were surprised at that voice came out of that man because he is one person that the voice did not match the person. He is amazing.
Hold Me In Your Arms or Cry For Help both more soulful and after he split from the pop factory that was Stock, Aitken, and Waterman to I think become more of a twisted artist in his own right it's what I'd check out next. I have to say it's weird you reacted to this song now because I remember my grandpa playing this in his local village hall whilst setting up for a kids birthday disco night. He recently passed away at the amazing age of 104 and we had family, friends, and neighbours in the same hall he helped run for some food, drink, and a celebration of his life just the other day after putting him to rest!!! He was a character who will be missed but definitely remembered. RIP grandpa!!
He didn't find the formula. He was in the UK's equivalent of the Motown production line. Stock Aitken and Waterman was a factory producing hit after hit for the likes of Astley, Bananarama and Kylie Minogue. They had a formula and they exploited it to the extreme.
Rick was the man, and you guys are right. What an incredible voice. This one was probably my favorite of his! EDIT: Oh, and almost forgot. "It Would Take a Strong Man" is another one of his I'd highly recommend.
I don't care what anyone says - I love his voice and his upbeat songs. So many fun songs and so glad you brought him out. Now you need to get some Pablo Cruise Whatcha Gonna Do?
Rick Astley recently did Glastonbury Fest last year and he did a set with the band Blossoms where they performed The Smiths songs. The whole thing is on youtube but only in audio form. Highly recommend giving it a listen. It's great music to listen to while puttering around the house.
"Cry for Help" and "Hopelessly" are two Rick Astley songs from the 90s that you should check out.
cry for help was a fantastic and underrated song
Absolutely Cry For Help
Took the words right out of my mouth. Cry For Help wiould give them another perspective to add
I agree, Cry for Help is my all time favorite with It Would Take a Strong Strong Man as my 2nd favorite.
@@johnaaron3103 oooh that’s a great one too.
Rick was 58 this week, he sounds (and looks ❤) just as amazing ❤❤
And here's another vote for Cry for help 👍
Gosh, that would mean he was 21/22 when he came out with this song ("Together Forever"). :)
Cry for help is another song of his that is very soulful

Also Move Right Out by Rick Astley is awesome too. Very powerful and he has long hair in that video
Shoulder-length hair? This I gotta check out!
This is the sound of Stock/Aitken/Waterman. They were huge producers in the 80s, and while we had some hits in the US, they were massive in the UK. "Cry For Help" is my favorite Rick Astley song and y'all will be shocked if you react to it. Not only is it a beautiful song, but Rick Astley looks completely different with long hair! I suggest that be your next reaction song. You'll love the song!
I love this song! Never gonna give you up is a classic, but I love Together Forever much more.
So do I 🙂
I LOVE this song too!! I was an American college student who was studying abroad for a year in Seville, Spain when this was a massive hit song. They played it in the El Rio dance club in Seville A LOT. The floor would pack full when it was played. It still instantly reminds me of Spain!! ❤

Same! My favorite! There’s just…something about it. ❤

Rick Astley does amazing ballads. I'd say his voice is more suited for them. My favorites are, "It Would Take a Strong, Strong Man," "Hopelessly" and "Cry For Help "

He still performs and has a UA-cam channel. He released a new music video a couple months ago.
"Cry for help" has a different vibe but it's my favorite. And he's aged so well...❤
"Cry for Help" my fav Rick (gorgeous hair) Astley.. should be your next song!
My favorite Rick Astley song is "Cry for Help". It is a soul and gospel sounding song. It even has a choir of black girls singing backup.
Beautiful song!
Definitely
Even black girls ?!?!😮
Rick Astley has a full, soulful and expressive voice and is still making music now. I would love to see you two experience some of his current work.
LOVE this!! Pure 1980s-the BEST decade! ! That voice and always a catchy beat. Rick Astley's singing always made me want to get out on the dance floor and have fun.
'Cry for Help', 'Dance', 'Hopelessly', 'Whenever You Need Somebody', 'Take Me to Your Heart', etc.

“Cry for Help” a more mature Rick Astley
“Hold me in your arms” is another great song.

While obviously not his most iconic song, I personally feel that it is his best. He projects such pure sincerity with every line!
Lol, well it's definitely his second most iconic song, it went to #1!

Rick does the song justice, but they also need to listen to the original by legend Nat King Cole.

"Hold Me In Your Arms" is a lovely song and video, as is "Cry For Help".

"Cry for help" is one of his early 90's hits and it's beautiful.
Rick has the timbre of a black singer's voice. Fantastic!
