I tried this. And the first time you scrape the bottom of your boat. It tears the crap out of the tape. Does not hold up at all.
I have 2,400-hours on my Delta 12-10 kayak and I'm very careful, i.e., I use wheels vs. dragging my kayak thru the parking lot. Both the bow and stern developed cracks/leaks recently. I fixed them with JB Weld. If I knew his was going to happen I would have bought a toothpaste sized tubes of JB Weld at Walmart and filled the low spots on the bow and stern when it was brand new. Once I saw the gray JB Weld color I would have known I was thru the kayak material. I'd rather spend $20 for JB Weld vs. hours of labor.
Bro I swear I was looking up keel guard ideas while watching UA-cam and your video came up lol it’s a sign man!!! Going to Home Depot tomorrow
Great tip Q! 👍🏻
🙏🏽
Glad I went through everyone else's comments!
Yeah bro! I am glad that these comments can help someone!
That's a damn good idea. Gotta try it myself on the X factor. Big thumbs up bro.
Thanks again snapper king! I truly appreciate your time watching maybe we can plan something soon! 🙏🏽🎣👍🏽
@@KayakQ That would be awesome. Let me know when.
Read my mind icy lol
@@KayakQ any updates on how the tape worked? Thanks
Honestly while its gonna be more difficult but i think im just going to shape a piece of high carbon steel and attach it with JB weld.
How has it held up after going into the water?
Stay tuned I will be dropping a videos with an update on how it held up.
Now that this video is 2 yrs old I'm curious how this mod performed over time. How long did it last? Did it scrape off from dragging in sand or shallows?
I highly do not recommend this method. Use Kydex
@@KayakQthanks for the info man
Genius. I just sprayed Truck Bed Liner on mine last week. Haven't tested it on asphalt but it does have a gritty texture to it. How is the Gorilla tape on asphalt?
It is horrible on the asphalt!
Do you know if this fix on vibe shearwater?
Yes it does!
The caption reads, "The Best Keel Guard for kayaks" and yet it's just being installed and there's no evidence that it works at all. He says that he'll get back to us and let us know how it works. How does he know it's the best if this is the first time he's tried it?
It’s definitely easier to point the finger then to do the right thing and be the one to actually make the video. Thank you for the heads up /advice. I do see D.I.Y in the title so that should change your view. Thanks 😝👍🏽
@@KayakQ So you're saying the right thing to do is to buy and install a product that's not even made to do the job you want it to and and say it's the best at doing that job? DIY or not you say it's the best and you have no clue, as is evidenced by your replies to those that ask how good it works and how long it lasts.
I'm doing mine with Kydex
Looks good - be nice to know how long it lasts
I let you know from my end!
@@KayakQ how has it been after 5 months?
How's it after a year???
The edges are horrible…. Worst idea ever. Kydex is 100% the way to go.
The gorilla tape will rip - the gator guard is turns to a hard solid material that scuffs but protects your kyak for many years
how many millimeters is this kydex sheet?
I believe it’s 3/8 of an Inch
So your calling this video "The Best Keel Guard for Kayaks", but youve never used it before?
So if you disagree with the title that is your opinion and that is fine. It is what it is. There will be a follow up video coming soon to address all comments relating this video. God Bless and stay safe 👍🏽
Hows it holdin up?
It’s still on there and helping protect the haul, it just looks crappy!
How is it doing
Horrible
try JB Weld, it will last even longer
Thank you! I will give it a try! 👍🏽
hey guys, anyone who has done this, how has it held up??
It’s not bad but I would recommend kydex for better results. Kydex plastic and a heat gun should solve all keel guard solutions.
@@KayakQ the only thing that worries me about the kydex guard is the heat that will be applied to the kayak itself. You are trying to melt plastic (the kydex) while at the same time not trying to melt or weaken plastic (the kayak)
You would heat up the the kydex plastic away from the kayak first, and then apply it warm to mold it to the kayak to take shape. No heat gun to both. If you do it that way you should be good 💯%. Let me know how it goes?
@@KayakQ So i tried the kydex method, but was unable to get it to completely mold to the bottom of the kayak. maybe it was too think? it was a pain in the a** and didnt seem to work too well. going to try a spray on liner next.
so how did it work?
Horrible 😞
@@KayakQ thanks
I will be doing a remake of the video using kydex plastic which is 100%better.
That looks a lot like whats used on rv roofs. Just black instead of white
Hows it holding?
Isn't great for me :(
It’s held up for the most part and has stopped the haul from getting heavy scratches but is not the ideal keel guard protector!
It doesn’t work well. It rips very easily when it runs against anything
Everything is a work in progress until I get the official keel guard! It never hurts to try something before you realize what really works!
Yes I did the same thing and quicky realized Gorilla tape does very little to protect the kayak.
@@KayakQ then you should fix the title to " Shitty Keel Guard DIY before more people waste their money.
Has anybody tried using stainless steel foil tape instead of Gorilla tape?
kydex or nothing at all
Yup 100%
Update… “Horrible”
Yes! Horrible decision on my part!
cheap way out
😂yeah cheap way out is not always the best way out!
Actually it's the more expensive way to do it because it's not going to work and you're going to have to scrape all that crap off your boat before you buy and install something that does.
