I never thought I’d see the day where I’d be putting an external source of power to propel my kayak. But here we are, it’s 2018 and we’re seeing more and more people with trolling motors, torqueedos, etc on the back of their kayaks to make fishing life easier. This is definitely not the norm but do you remember 2-3 years ago when having pedal/mirage drives wasn’t the norm? Bottom line here is that we’re in a growing sport and if you fish tournaments as much as I do, you understand the importance of being efficient on the water. I fish a lot of tournaments and it’s important to me to spend as little time/energy pedaling to a spot as possible so I can maximize my fishing time . Enter the Bixpy Jet. Take a look at this video to see my initial thoughts and have a look below for some of the results from today.

Romel is really a genius.. i'm serious. Always clean work.. and he can work out anything.. Looks great Greg!
I have the Native Titan 10.5 and went with $99 Minn Kota trolling motor.
Modified it by removing the the top and cutting down the shaft. Ran the wiring to a control box up to the seat.
Paired it with Kevin Dismukes bracket and actuator for raising and lowering of the shaft and motor depth in the water.
The bracket also allows you to fully pull and lower the entire motor up out of the water or back in.
Use a lithium battery for powering the actuator and trolling motor.
I think I have around $450 invested in everything. For me the ability to raise and lower depth of motor with the actuator with just a flip of a switch is better than anything else out there.
Also...no need to spend money on the Boondox rudder upgrade. Keep the stock rudder and steer left and right with pvc pole attached to top of trolling motor shaft.
I actually bought the Titan for around $1500+ without the foot pedals system and just use the trolling motor setup on the back.
Pretty cool for the price...i just got 1103 torqueedo on pa14 and it tops 6mph fully loaded and 7 if i pedal.
Greg, I used a 40 # thrust minn kota with a 12v marine cycle battery. 45# with trolling motor.. top speed was 5mph less work on the water but way more work getting in and out. That set-up is super compatible that you have there
That Bixby jet is sweet! Definitely need to consider one of those when I buy my yak this spring! Thx Greg
The world is full of haters, don't worry about them. Glad to see you gentleman out having fun on the water !!! I have a Pelican and a Bixpy setup as well. Cheers and great fishing !!!
idk why so many people are hating. It's just a convenient little trolling motor. If you have something else con fkn grats but that doesn't take away from the fact that this thing is extremely easily to take on and off and use. Someone already mentioned it but if the battery charged solarly that would be badass.
T the bar off at the bottom where the motors mounted and you should be able to mount two to three of those Motors and then you can just add battery packs if you really want to go faster
With that bathtub I don’t blame you lol. Sure it’s great to fish off of but if I had to pedal/paddle I’d definitely take my wilderness radar over that thing.
If I rigged up a second kayak I think I’d consider motorizing it instead of pedals altogether for something different.
I got one for my Hobie TI, to help me when there's no wind and my legs are tired. Great little motor 👍
I'd be interested to see how that handles the delta grass. It'd be awesome if it could spot lock in the tides.
Been looking at the Bixby for a bit. We have access to Chaumont Bay on Lake Ontario. Unfortunately one of the spots we're interested in is quite a paddle. This now makes those further spots in range.
At that power band a jet isn't very helpful unless your running extremely shallow. I have run a 30lb thrust Minn Kota on a 17 foot Coleman canoe and it was able to hit 5.5 mph with two adult men and all the fishing gear. With a 29 Deep cycle battery I can go all day long if I keep it down to speed 3 or less. Also the Minnkota is only $99 and the battery was $119 at Walmart.
Not saying this is useless just that I don't think its as efficient as a regular old trolling motor and a heck of a lot more expensive.
You would have hit that speed overloaded or empty, all trolling motors have a top speed of 5-6mph. They just have more or less pushing power. A 10lb motor will go as fast as a massive troller off a mini yacht.
I may need to check one of those out for my wooden kayaks. A little more push would make it a lot easier to get out to the reef.
No hating, curious tho. I got to fish Camanche in the 70's. They were practically jumping in the boat at sunset. Nice to see you there.
Maybe give BerleyPro Native rudder a try if it gives further trouble. I think it is compatible with Titan. Although Boondox makes great products. I like their portable hammock setup.
Great add on, that will help on the delta I bet
Looks nice to me. I saw you fiddling with the pins at the end, just put them back in the holes they came out of on the motor so you don't lose them.
No hating here, leg energy saving device, which looks like fun.
Greg, since youre in CA, putting a motor on your yak, youll have to register it with DMV. I had tp get a CF# on my yak for putting a trolling motor on it.
Good call John! Yep, registered the boat at the DMV the day prior just haven't put the stickers on yet!
Hey Greg: So glad to have learned through you putting the Bixpy jet on your kayak. I saw the Bixpy jet online recently and was intrigued but would not commit blindly to buying one for my kayak. You gave us true user experience to ponder/decide for ourselves. Thanks for sharing, "you lazy sod". Ha Ha.
Ur going to have an awesome new season bud. Kick ass! Née waters here you come.
Awesome, I put the Hobie Evolve by Torquedo on my Outback and can go 5.5 mph. I love it. Unfortunately, none of the tournaments around me allow an electric motor. I guess your area allows them.
Hope you had Fun at the Local Lake! I never catch anything but it's cool to see you so local!
I am going to try one of these in the Florida mangroves.
Would be nice if the cover for the battery was a solar panel and charged the battery while out fishing.
You could buy a little outboard motor and then build a mount for it on the back of the kayak plus it would probably be cheaper than that trolling motor
All boats, even kayaks, have maximum hull speeds so no matter what the nature of the propulsion, you will be limited to the hull speed. Sounds like this kayak has serious speed limitations due to its design which will be limiting no matter how it’s powered. It’s length definitely is a contributing factor.
You should put a transom mount, and buy a 55 lb thrust trolling motor, it could move you at around 7kph
Oh man.... why did I have to watch this video???? I would LOVE to add this to my yak. Just don't have an extra grand laying around! That's very cool!
man I've seen these before, they seem pretty badass. always looking for something to give me the edge while kayak fishing
Pretty cool! I wouldn’t mind having a trolling motor set up on my kayak some days lol. Only problem we have is our tournament trail doesn’t allow anything except human power on the kayak. I know KBF allows trolling motors. It will help you a lot at the NC in Kentucky in April.
Looks like it works just as we hoped. I think Dax the shop dog stole the show like usual.
Romel is just brilliant.. but I am sure you guys already know that!
Did the gasket fix the leak?
Headwaters Kayak is a big but
Greg Robards is a great but
Really cool motor! definitely easier on the legs, thanks for sharing!
You shouldn’t get any haters for looking to add as many casts as possible. Great job to the wizard Romel. #TeamNU
Yakinbass SoCal agreed. More like an E assist.
very nice motor for kayak , install ws 24lb motor on the rudder of my hobie sport ,work great .
GLEN!! hes still alive!!!
Now you have to register your kayak now since it has a motor on it
I thought that white battery pack unit was a white plate lunch container
Would love a motor, but now you have to register it with the DMV and put CF numbers on your hull.
Awesome looking jet! Might have to get one myself.
I like it . But I would like to know how your buddy likes that trolling motor mounted on front of his kayak
Not being critical, just my thoughts. For me getting into kayak fishing it was all about the simplicity and the human powered element. This kind of reminds me of the e-mountain bike phenomenon. Is it a bike or is it a motor cycle? Is it a powerboat or is it a kayak. I am surprised kayak tournaments allow motors! Anyway, looks like a pretty sick setup though. I have a couple of favorite spots that are long pedals and I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t of thought of easier ways to get there! Can’t wait to see you first tourney vid with it!
kona12 That all changed when Torqueedo came to KBF with a big check asking to sponsor the series. I agree I wish it was human powered only, but with that said I’m not sure it’s that big of an advantage from what I’ve seen.
I fish with the bixpy sup jet and it's been a game changer
The plug that goes into the battery, is the Blue Tubing wide enough to have that plug pass through it? Say you wanted to remove the power wire from the tubing and adapt it another way.
Also, what tubing material did you use to shorten the transom mounting pipe?
Why not throw a 4hp outboard on it?
Ive been watching your channel for awhile and saw you Wednesday at Camanche with your friends. At approx. 8:56 in your video, you can see my white truck on the bank. lol
B roll game on point this video nice job
Great video!! Thanks for sharing. Can't wait to see more videos!
A little much $1,100 don't you think for a trolling motor
lithium ion battery is half the cost
Was thinking the same.
I never understood why if he has the space and is probably under weight he would not want to use a real trolley with more power.
Jim Ryan when they're fishing from two pieces of vacuum formed plastic somewhat shaped like a boat when glued together, what would you expect.
Compared to Torqueedo and ScubaJet, no. The battery and brushless motor are the main cost. Mine fits directly in the mirage well. Works great 👍
Damn, your kayak is better equipped than some full size boats.
lol, it's been a work in progress!
I tried a trolling motor on my kayak. I found I could paddle faster than the motor. My normal paddling speed is 4to 5 mph.
Are powered kayaks allowed in tournaments? Just asking not hating. Lol
Tiburon JF in most series yes. KBF sets most the standards for kayak bass fishing and they allowed it a few years ago.
Awesome mod I definitely want to do this on my yak, dopest edits yet man! Keep the videos coming!
Pretty sick man!!!
Juggernaut phone cases are water proof and compatible with RAM mounts.
i'd like to see 2 mounted side by side,.. that'd be kinda cool..
Why did you go with the Torqeedo instead?
@Greg Blanchard Here is a bit of constructive criticism. I clicked the vid just wanting to see a kayak powered by that jet motor w/e that is... then it started a 12 minute video of you guys walking around preparing to go kayaking... That's cool, you guys are vlogging, I get it. But maybe for the viewers like me that just want to see what was advertised on the title, start the video with an edit in of driving that kayak with the motor, at the very start... doesn't have to be the whole segment, just a few snippets of the kayak with the motor, then cut back and start your 12 minute vlog.
Anyways, really not trying to be a dick, that's just what I'd like to see as a viewer. GL
Go rum runner style and strap 5 of those Bixpys on the back.
lol man you got to it before I did. I have had the Bixby since Nov just been testing it and make some mods to it
sweet addition.
One of these days I'm going to see you out there and say what's up
FYI ..adding an electric motor to a kayak means you will have to get it registered in many states. Check local Laws!
Danny Cal I are exactly right here in South Carolina they will pop u good if not Registered. I love kayaking bit I’m not spending $2500 on a yak then another $1200 on a motor. That’s a bass boat.
Here in OK we run them all day long legally...only need to tag it if motor is in excess of 10hp. You cant reliably convert electric thrust to HP.
Screw your laws
Would need full reg. In NY for sure
1 HP is 745.7 watts, so yes you can easily convert.
at this point i feel like you should just a nice aluminum flat bottom jon boat and convert it into a mini bass boat
southbaybassin then u just look poor..... Lol this has technic
Elvisr29 no, this has the look of a tree hugging soy boy making a half assed effort at becoming a man.
It’s practically a plastic jon boat already
I have a 1640 river jon boat. One day I came upon two kayaks way way down the river. The owners looked sick and exhausted... dehydrated. So I put them and their kayaks into my jon boat and took them 6 miles back upstream to where they'd launched. Black River in Arkansas. These things are cool but stay off real waters with real watercraft. You'll get hurt. Like taking a moped onto the interstate highay. Don't do it.
2 questions i have, that NO-ONE has ever mentioned...[that i have read. ;-}].
HOW waterproof, deep, can that wrist remote controller go to? i plan on blowing sand underwater with the remote battery pack for longer time.
AND
💯 💪👊LET'S GO!!! What an awesome product!
noice boots! love the rig.setup. cool beans
Hey Greg,
Where can I get the mounting hardware for the Bixpy that will fit the Titian 10.5?
It's awesome but too expensive?....😭 way much more than my kayak. Great video Greg
Where can I purchase the mount?
Quick question looking to get another kayak what u sudjest is a Good one.
I know in Indiana you have to register even an electric motor.
I like it Greg.
Is this legal in Kayak tourneys and do you have to register it in required states where you fish. I know you fish all over the country. Love the videos...keep'em comin!
Shout out to my cousin Romel! Has this been tested in saltwater?? Have Jackson BigRig for a test bed platform.
put a solar panel on it to keep the battery charged all the time
Hey Greg do you have to register your kayak, now. Just kidding, lol! I would like to have an assist motor for the trip home.
This product is used for diving and not for boat paddling. You can get better experience out of the BIXPY product if you 🏊 🏊(swim) with it!
What was the water leak issue you were having at the rudder system?
Awesome video as always and Romel still building cool stuff. @Headwaters - It would be nice to have this setup compared to FeelFree overdrive (pedal and power) setup. FeelFree seems cleaner but not sure how durable the hybrid setup would be.
cool upgrade....
What boots were you wearing?
Awesome mod Greg, im planning on doing something similar on my 10.5, but with a Kevin Dismuke Mount. Was there any more water come in the boat after gasket fix?
Chase Nash Seems like that fixed it. We’ve done it a bunch now. Talked to Native and they will have a fix out soon. Message me if you need more details.
Bixpy looks great but it is astonishingly more expensive than a trolling motor. Am I missing something here ?
Very nice I wonder if I could GO offshore faster with that. :D
You need "CF" Numbers now?? I just put a similiar system on and they wouldnt let me in the water without Vessel Numbers.
Is the Yak Attack black pack worth it? I'm looking to get one but it'll cost me $200. Considering just making my own crate.
I need one looks so nice👍👍🔥🔥🔥
That’s pretty sweet! I work right next to Lodi lake. No fish in there tho lol. If you ever wanna catch a double digit, direct message me. I know a great spot. You could launch your yak right off my property too. You probably get these messages a lot but this place is your kind of spot for sure
Joshua Dixon no bass in Lodi Lake. 🤣
pretty cool unit, you'll soon keep up with the bass boats!
Do we need to register these, nice video!!
Man thats crazy! None of the tournaments that I fish will allow any type of motor. Where do you fish?? haha
Small prop, think you'd get more speed with a bigger prop?
So where's the jet motor? All I see prop
Great video
Will you have to register a kayak if you add the Bixpy jet?
Let's race!!! 😛
Nice add on
So what would happen if you installed 2 or 3 of them on your kayak 😁
Can you use a kayak for stripper fishing in the river ?
