Most people prefer the foam board for light weight and convenience, but that aside - which one is better? Foam boards or cements board with waterproofing membranes?
Whatever your supplier has plenty in stock. For me it's Goboard because Lowes, HD, Menards and dedicated tile suppliers have them readily available. I am not a fan of Schluter foam boards though because they cost more and not as rigid as wedi and goboard.
Red guard gets a lot of hate. Have you compared it with the other big membrane products like hydro ban or aqua defense? Do you have an opinion on the various membrane systems? For a novice like myself they seem affordable and forgiving, but I could be overlooking a cheaper board system.
I have not created a video on the differences. But I definitely have the opinion that hydroban is a much better product My opinion on liquid membranes from best to good: Ardex 8+9 Hydroban Aqua defense That being said, I’d choose a foam board like go board or hydro blok over any other system. Overall the easiest fastest method 👍
@BathroomRemodelingTeacher I agree, but it's 2 different materials. S1K is equivalent to aqua defense. Or hydro ban.... Which are straight liquid water proofing, just like red guard. 8 + 9 is a mixture of 2 things. More like an epoxy.
Whats the white material you used for the 1st cement board clip? I'm doing my bathroom and decided cement board was the best choice and now wanna make sure its water proof besides jus sealing the seams..
Floor and Décor has Sentinel 4'x8' boards for $55 or 36"x60" for $25 compared to Schluter and twice the price. My cost for GoBoard is the same as for the Sentinel. To me, it is all dollars and cents.
My tile goes up from the tub, to 41". If I want to tile all the way to the ceiling, do I need to bust out the upper walls and apply insulation and cement board?
I stopped adjust my methods because the client can’t afford them. There’s to many jobs out there and they can use someone else. I use to aquadefense everything until I used Wedi. Then I realized I was breathing that shit in all day. As far as the membranes go. I only use Wedi subliner dry with 620 because there’s an actual waterproof sealant used not just thinset that will definitely wick.
My friend, please upgrade your screws on the go board. They make coated “GoBoard” screws that have a big flat top that is less inclined to countersink. They are great to use and covers their requirements for install.
Thank God for this dude my own boss won't even show me any of these things he thinks I am going to take his work away
You have the wrong boss.
Isn't that pathetic? I never understood that, the better & more knowledgable everyone around me is the easier the day goes.
Fantastic video that not only goes over the options, but shows the install. Best video I’ve found thus far.
I've tried topical and kerdi membrane and foam boards I prefer foam board over them all because light weight and no dust cutting the board

I haven’t seen you install a tile redi system. Have you done any and what are you thoughts? They seem bulletproof where it counts.
Great video! Thank you for your experience
Which method lasts the longest?
Whichever was installed correctly according to manufacturer recommended methods
@@royalblood2405 that goes without saying
Why not use the closed cell blue foam board? Does tile not bond to it?

The equivalent for hydrovan or aqua defense is ardex S1K. Not 8 +9, But 8 + 9 is good.
@@BonBon770 I’d argue 8+9 being better

Sikaflex from Sika is the best selant

Lowes, Home Depot, Menards and dedicated tile shops around me all carry GoBoad. Never seen the Sentinel brand you spoke of.
Have you considered or used 100% silicone roof paint as a liquid membrane substrate? Why would you select or avoid it?
I can't imagine it would spread very easily or uniformly, and aside from that I don't think thinset would adhere to it properly
Steve. Thoughts on Laticrete Hyrdoban system?
What do you think of Densheild ? My tile contractor swears by it as it is wateroroof and cuts like sheetrock.

Really good info 👍🏾
Hi Steve, would you say Aqua Defense if better than Red Guard or are they pretty much the same?
It’s not a whole lot better, but I would choose over Redgard 👍
I was under the impression GoBoard was waterproof all the way through also.
Yes it is 👍 I recently learned that, didn’t realize the foam has the same qualities as Wedi
What’s that white stuff over cement board at 4:15?

Anyone float fat mud anymore?
Just curious….what happened to Home Repair Tutor?…stopped uploading videos
Guess he primarily does shorts now and sells his courses?
@@BathroomRemodelingTeacher gotcha! I didn’t see the shorts!

Yeah this was an older go board installation. And the are not required btw 👍
@@BathroomRemodelingTeacher True-👍
switched to goboards and never look back to other methods, easy, fast ….time matter
Same. Problem is finding them available. My local supplier got me hooked and then stopped carrying it. Figures
@@subydude88 I buy them from lowes, always is stock they are even on sale now for 24$ a board
Hey steve , thanks for the info
