  • 💥Waterproofing System Comparison💥
    Its a question I get all the time, "Which is the best waterproofing method out there for a tile shower?"
    It comes down to 3 main factors:
    Availability (Can I pick it up now & get to work 😄)
    Time of Installation (if you are a contractor, time is money)
    Price/Budget
    Foam board is no doubt the easiest & fastest system to install
    Especially the sealant application type systems
    Not all are price friendly though...
    Kerdi board for instance can cost upwards of $80 a sheet!
    For a tutorial on Kerdi Board Installation check out this section of the Ultimate Curbless Shower Course - bit.ly/3L0g5mw
    Foam boards like WEDI can be quite costly too!
    For a tutorial on WEDI Board Installation check out this section of the Custom Tile Shower Course - bit.ly/3OVe24E
    Hydro-Blok Foam Board is pretty much an identical type of product as WEDI
    For a tutorial on Hydo-Blok Board Installation check out this section of the Tub/Shower Replacement Course - bit.ly/48gdL40
    One of my favorite foam boards is Go Board - bit.ly/48gdL40
    Readily available
    Fast & Easy
    For a tutorial on installing Go Board check out these sections of courses:

    3 Day Tile Shower Course - bit.ly/3GKQ5Jl

    Most sealant application type systems can be installed easily in a couple of hours 👊
    Another popular method is sheet membranes like Schluter Kerdi
    This method becomes very cost effective if you use drywall as a backer board 👍
    For a tutorial on Schluter Kerdi Membrane Installation check out this section of the Ultimate Curbless Shower Course - bit.ly/480QmUK
    GURU Membrane is a very similar membrane product
    Biggest issue about membrane application is the mess.....Its not a very fun method to apply
    Then you can't forget about a traditional method with cement board 👍
    This has been a method used for decades
    For a tutorial on installing cement board check out this section of the Home Office Bathroom Course - bit.ly/47iDBDX
    Cement board is not waterproof on its own though
    A liquid waterproofing must be applied to be waterproof
    Ardex 8+9 is one of my favorite liquid membranes
    Check out this section of the Basement Bathroom Course for tutorial on Ardex 8+9 - bit.ly/47iDBDX
    Redgard is probably the most popular liquid membrane used over cement board
    I would argue primarily for its availability
    For a tutorial on Redgard application check out this section of the Home Office Bathroom Course - bit.ly/3td1xup

    I've tried topical and kerdi membrane and foam boards I prefer foam board over them all because light weight and no dust cutting the board

    My tile goes up from the tub, to 41". If I want to tile all the way to the ceiling, do I need to bust out the upper walls and apply insulation and cement board?

    Most people prefer the foam board for light weight and convenience, but that aside - which one is better? Foam boards or cements board with waterproofing membranes?

    Whats the white material you used for the 1st cement board clip? I'm doing my bathroom and decided cement board was the best choice and now wanna make sure its water proof besides jus sealing the seams..

    I haven’t seen you install a tile redi system. Have you done any and what are you thoughts? They seem bulletproof where it counts.

    Red guard gets a lot of hate. Have you compared it with the other big membrane products like hydro ban or aqua defense? Do you have an opinion on the various membrane systems? For a novice like myself they seem affordable and forgiving, but I could be overlooking a cheaper board system.

      @BathroomRemodelingTeacher  8 місяців тому +4

      I have not created a video on the differences. But I definitely have the opinion that hydroban is a much better product
      My opinion on liquid membranes from best to good:
      Ardex 8+9
      Hydroban
      Aqua defense
      That being said, I’d choose a foam board like go board or hydro blok over any other system. Overall the easiest fastest method 👍

      @BonBon770 8 місяців тому

      The equivalent for hydrovan or aqua defense is ardex S1K. Not 8 +9, But 8 + 9 is good.

    • @BathroomRemodelingTeacher
      @BathroomRemodelingTeacher  8 місяців тому

      @@BonBon770 I’d argue 8+9 being better

    • @BonBon770
      @BonBon770 8 місяців тому

      @BathroomRemodelingTeacher I agree, but it's 2 different materials. S1K is equivalent to aqua defense. Or hydro ban.... Which are straight liquid water proofing, just like red guard. 8 + 9 is a mixture of 2 things.
      More like an epoxy.

    Have you considered or used 100% silicone roof paint as a liquid membrane substrate? Why would you select or avoid it?

    • @kyleaguiar3413

      I can't imagine it would spread very easily or uniformly, and aside from that I don't think thinset would adhere to it properly

    I stopped adjust my methods because the client can’t afford them. There’s to many jobs out there and they can use someone else. I use to aquadefense everything until I used Wedi. Then I realized I was breathing that shit in all day. As far as the membranes go. I only use Wedi subliner dry with 620 because there’s an actual waterproof sealant used not just thinset that will definitely wick.

    My friend, please upgrade your screws on the go board. They make coated “GoBoard” screws that have a big flat top that is less inclined to countersink. They are great to use and covers their requirements for install.
