As a DIYer doing a 2 wall basement shower for the first time, I used Kerdi board (Schluter) and found it really simple and only a bit more in price that the Red Guard/cement board. Factor in mess, drying times, fumes, etc and I can't see why you wouldn't do with Schluter. The boards are light, can cut with a knife, they are waterproof (of course you have to cover seams and screw penetrations). When I demo the upstairs shower I'm going to use Kerdi board again and this video (which was great by the way) just clarified that decision for me.
I am so glad I came across your page, I'm a big DIYer and have learn a lot more than I thought I knew about various techniques for building out, water proofing, tiling etc, thank you so much for all the work you and your wife are doing and please keep the videos coming!
I rolled three coats of Regard in a bathroom job about 7 years ago. No problems so far, works great. But it can kill some brain cells. Were a respirator.
I see a lot of hack tilers on youtube. When someone starts quoting TCNA, NTCA, ANSI standards and recommends following manufactures recommendations, they have my attention.
Thanks, from London. This is hpw I would do it but you have so many people with slightly different ways. I believe this will last my lifetime as I'm 67. The extra spend is completely worth it.
This is a GREAT video! I wish I'd found this a month ago, before I started ripping walls out. Still hanging cement board (which I'd have done slightly differently had I found your video sooner), but this is great info for when I get to the Redgard stage. In our master bathroom. Ugh, lol. Luckily I used Hardie's upgraded waterproof board for the entire long wall, so only need Regard on the two short walls (and over the screws on the Hardie waterproof board). Anyway, this deserves a lot more views and likes -- you have one of the best tub surround videos out there, and I have watched plenty. Thanks for this!
I'm also not a fan of RedGaurd - I prefer to use Hydro-Ban - Much easier - less time consuming process (application and drying time) and almost odorless - Plus I believe its a better waterproofing liquid membrane. I actually prefer to use waterproof Foam board and just seal the joints and screw/plates with Waterproof sealant, and not have to cover the whole wall with a waterproof membrane. I use a 12" wide waterproofing of Hydro Ban on the transition from Wallboard to drywall areas. Thank you for your excellent and very informative and honest opinions videos!
Wild, you can do that and if the tile and grout are sealed it might last upwards of 10 years of nothing ever gets cracked, I just pulled apart a tub surround that was glued onto regular drywall with no problems (no shower in tub)
You need to prime a cement board with a diluted mix of redguard + water. Text from the redguard instructions. Prime all surfaces to receive RedGard® with properly applied manufacturer's sealer or with a primer coat of RedGard®, consisting of 1 part RedGard®, diluted with 4 parts clean, cool water. In a clean pail, mix at low speed to obtain a lump-free solution.
hey bud qs how come it says the max pro is recommended for window exterior and siding, not recommended for bathroom? can I still use it for sealing my bathroom cement board
Doesnt the cement board need to be 3/4" above the tub deck? Wont there be weeping issues when water eventually penetrates the tile and grout from the deck?
I barely made it through the whole video, the reason it's still wet the next day is because you're putting it on too thick. I understand the jug says what it says, but putting it on in thin Coats 5 Coats with a roller in one day, the 2nd day after the 1st day you hang all the concrete board tape and see all the joints with alkali resistant concrete board, seam tape and thin set like you mentioned. Let it dry and then put 5 Coats on the next day with a fan with a respirator. And I'm using exactly the same amount you are. it should end up being credit card thickness so you're doing it in 2 days and I'm doing it in 2 days, but I'm doing it with a roller, so it's the same, im just using ardex s1k..... Also different municipalities call for different distances on concrete board screws. Where I am it's six inches on edge , Is and eight in the field...... Good video man!
Guess only difference is 2nd day I’m done in 45 minutes verses messing around every hour to apply more. If I had other things to do, I agree rolling is easier. But this is the last time for me anyways 😆
I know i'm late to the party. But excellent video. Been watching your channel alot. I'm working on my MB remodel and your channel has been a Great Tool. Thank's.
As a virgin bathroom re-modeller, and trying to balance budget vs idiot-proof, I'm reluctant to try using Schluter simply because I expect to screw up. RedGuard seems easy enough for us newb's but is Ardex or HydroBan just as forgiving? Budget wise, you made a great point about being budget comparable.
Great vid by BRT. Finally to see someone do it this way. I have done my first bathroom loooong time ago the same way and relied on common sense. Now watching you do this Steve I got the idea and wonder what if we redguard cement boards prior to installing them onto walls? 👀 Would be much easier handling the trowel on a flat (sawhorse plywood table) or even on the floor and definitely way less messier. Then it would left only to embed the tape over the seams and corners. Hmmmmh And for the smell, if I remember correctly it was strong ammonia based odor that after two hours working in confined space definitely gets to you. Never used hydroban. Does that smell strong as well?
@@BathroomRemodelingTeacher Hahaha, of course. Foam board is superior in so many ways. Great work. Saw a finished Barbie & Ken bathroom on insta. Looks dope. 👍💪
wouldnt it dry faster and maybe finish faster if you did more thinner coats to get the same coverage? they claim it drys in 90 min if u roll it i imagine.
I don't like when you install the bathtub first and then you tile the floor up to the tub. Then the tub is below the tile. When I do my bathroom I want to tile the floor first and the tub will sit on the tile floor. Is that the wrong way to do it. Back in the day I used to see the tube sitting on top of the tile
I’m currently doing a full house remodel that includes two bathrooms where I’m building custom showers. I’m definitely using cement board and a liquid membrane. You mentioned a couple other products and I know there is also mapai aqua defense. Of all those products, which is the best and/or easiest to work with?
@bathroom remodeling teacher - would you prefer Liquid Hydroban or Cementitious Hydroban to waterproof mud pack shower pans?? Really like your work just can’t decide whether bond strength of liquid waterproofers is sufficient….
Do you have to plan using furring strips when you set the toilet flang? I assume this could be a problem if you are doing a remodel where the flange is already installed?
I agree about the smell. It's awful. I have never used Redgard as my primary waterproofing method. I use it as extra protection in corners, around windows, anywhere i think might need just that extra bit of insurance - especially with Schluter since i don't trust their method of using thinset after watching some of Tile Coach's stuff. I trust the poly sealants much more. I may never buy anymore of it since i can get Hydroban locally now.
i have used only cement board outdoors with tiles going on 16 years for my outdoor sink/ shower/ outdoor bar i have no problems whatsoever , i dont know if red gaurd was even invented then…. just saying
Good question, I usually do I simply didn’t order or grab it this time. Half the wall will be tile anyways 😆 I feel like that stuff is just a gimic anyways
Is it necessary to use the mesh tape with the goboard sealant because you're using durock? Goboard install only needs to just use the goboard sealant with no mesh tape.
Love your trowel method and it’s friendlier to drywallers like myself. Would you know if this method can also be applied to other liquid membrane products like Hydroban or AquaDefense? And how do you clean your tools so you can transition to drywall? Just let the redguard dry and peel off?
I feel aquadefense is pretty much the same consistency as Redgard. So wouldn’t be a bad idea to do it with that. Hydroban goes on thick. So normally not needed. But is helpful troweling the seams and corners
Lots of $$ on extra Red guard...... perhaps for an upstairs bathroom. No contractor is going to go that far either...... unless they include a 10 year warranty 😆😆
Well I'm trying to pickup on what is being done and for me a closer view then 6 ft. away on video does not fill my need to see what is taking place. I might as well be listening to a radio. I would think DYIers, are just like me and need visual reference along with the spoken tips. This is not the only simi = instruction video that could really help the folks who need it. IMO
To get the best cuts you've set up. Saw horses outside with a fan and check the wind and make sure the dust goes down wind. Or you can put a little bit of water on the board and it'll keep the dust down but cutting. With a grinder outside is still best for cutting concrete board. gives you the best edge most accurate.
You don't have to install cement board to build a waterproof shower, you can use moisture proof drywall and apply 2 coats of Hydroban or AquaDefense (avoid this crappy RedGard or Ardex 8+9) You're done and ready to tile!
I'm curious to know if people still use the bathtub? We had bathtubs in the past; however, nobody would ever use them. There's something about sitting in water that others have showered, unless you going to clean it every time you use it. Many people are obviously too large to sit in a bathtub.
