How a Tourbillon Works, presented by Hublot
The tourbillon compilation was designed by Louis Abraham Breguet to counteract the effects of gravity by placing the heart of the watch - the escapement - in a rotating cage. This is one of the most desirable complications in the high horology world simply because it is one of the most beautiful to behold. Time and Tide visit the home of Hublot, in Nyon Switzerland, to spend a day with the high complications team exploring a range of complications from the inside, starting with the tourbillon.

I'm really impressed how that works that you just shake shaped pieces of metal and it starts to live
The tourbillon solves a problem (gravity) that only a pocket watch really has. A wristwatch is frequently changing orientation throughout the day, which pretty much does the work of a tourbillon on its own.
The short of it is a tourbillon is the pinnacle of performance craftsmanship in a pocket watch, but needless overkill in a wristwatch.
Unless your a Fighter Pilot.
If your a fighter pilot any 1 dollar quartz watch is 10 times more accurate then the most expensive mechenically engineered watches anyway.
A mechanical movement is a needless overkill in a wristwatch. Just get a quartz, right?
isn't the minute repeater complication more difficult to make than a tourbillion though?
@@jeanraspail2979 why get a watch when you can eye ball the sun too right?
You and I get that the beauty of a mechanical watch is the craftsmanship not how many seconds it loses in 1 year
But he didn't explain how it works...
He did. It's the part about the pocket watch
He doesn't know, he is just in charge, there are peons who will know how to do the actual work.
@@samadrid6321 peons lmaf
Gotta make more eye contact hahaha
be careful with that in russia
Not much about how it works, but my appreciation for the sound of the word "tourbillon" has increased immensely by hearing it spoken with the proper french pronunciation. 10/10 would sit through a 5 minute again to hear the word "tourbillon" be pronounced.
I feel like the manufacturing of the parts are more impressive than the 9 hours assembly
Really interesting video - thanks for sharing
Congrats Andrew
At 3:27 the escape wheel looks to rotate backwards for a short time. I thought it was an effect of the camera's frame rate, like how a car's wheels, or an airplane's propeller or helicopter's rotor, can sometimes look like they are stopped or barely spinning on video. But watching the escapement in very slow motion or frame-by-frame, it definitely seems to me like the escape wheel actually did reverse direction for one "step" (like how the wheel's spokes can be seen to move counterclockwise for a short period). What could cause this to happen?
Very nice video :D
solution for non-existing problem
Handsome watch.
I have a BlancPain tourbillon and they are certainly mesmerising. Great video great content. Thank you and I love Hublot btw ❤️❤️
Id love to work for Hublot
Como eu iria gostar de trabalhar com a montagens desses relógios...seria show
i already have a hublot that my broo gave to me, is it soo cool cause he have skeleton style and i can take a view in all of movements happening.
So, how it works?
What watch is the watchmaker wearing?
Zuker Gill MVMT
moweh no It’s a G-Shock
A sapphire bridge is a great idea. thanks for the vid !
funny that the interviewer is wearing a Rolex submariner date :D (you could have left it at home right?)
amazing
How durable are these? In terms of abuse they can endure?
1:06 those misaligned screws on a watch that probably costs > 10.000€ drive me insane, I can see why people loathe Hublot
You know, the screws are supposed to be misaligned lol?.. it's not AP. Hublot uses real screws in their bezel, other brands that gave screws aligned (like AP) use sunken bolts with threads underneath the watch.. the misalignment on Hublot watches is not actually a misalignment at all, it's part of their industrial look and real look of a porthole window with bolts / screws.
@@andrewhilton5953 point is nobody forces them to make it like this, and it looks bad.
@@v0ldy54 but that's subjective ? ... A lot of people love how they look. If they didn't, they wouldn't sell so many? The brand wouldn't exist. LVMH would just shut it down.
I think the hate Hublot gets is very much stemmed from a sheep herd mentality where some Instagram watch people and youtubers spread hate about the brand and the poorly advised viewers lap it up like it's biblical knowledge lol. The reality is, if you actually look into the brand some of their stuff and use of materials far exceeds many other brands in the same price segment but ill advised tend to prefer to follow trends and "the herd" .. it's natural as human beings to hate what everyone else is told to hate. For the people who are independent enough to make their own assessment and be open minded, they can enjoy a really interesting brand.. the good and the bad they offer .. give it a try, its quite refreshing to not hate something just because others do
@@andrewhilton5953 eeh not that subjective in this case, symmetry is usually preferable especially when talking about geometric stuff, pick 100 people who already like this watch and ask them to choose between a photo of it with misaligned screws and one with aligned screws, most would surely prefer them to be aligned.
That accent is so fancyyyeuu.
Like saying how an F1 car works by Jeep.
amirjon really accurate
How is it works???
That aussie made it very awkward lol
Well, you pay for the art factor of the watch. As for accuracy goes, nothing can beat a smartphone/watch with auto clock update.
Moron.
And nothing beat broken charger or lack of power free port 😂😂😂😂
Mr Swatch brought me here. RIP NGH.
Monsieur, I have finished ze tourbillon
Oui? How many component?
68..
Not good enough!!
The watch maker is wearing a nomos club
1:37 "Itz a very IMPOTENT part of movement." :D
I swear I heard impotent as well. While this can happen to anyone, it was funny because of the context of the uselessness of tourbillons.
Great video, thanks for this. This sentence is very interesting: "8-9 hours to complete this little part". Most software developers hardly code more then 100 line of codes (specification and tests included) in the same interval. This gives us a hint about how complex softwares are :)
why do you guys never show Zenith on this channel?
Watch Aficionado because Zenith is dog shit. That is why. Don’t you even think about fighting back!!
Do you mean Zenith is "da shit"? Zenith is better than Hublot or Tag..both LVMH brands that are covered in this channel and watched by trolls like you. Zenith have numerous tourbillions, including a gyroscopic based one. You wouldn't know this cause you obviously know little about watches.
We actually did a slo mo video of that gyroscopic escapement on insta recently. Stay tuned for a full video range review - Andrew
Thank you Andrew, I look forward to it
Smarter than you think sounds dumber than dirt
Zenith makes great watches and has made movements for a little watch company name Rolex.
The presenter seems simultaneously bored and too fond of himself.
Yeah
So steam punk ! 👍👏😎😂
Didn't explain fully the working of a "tourbillon " .
Created more confusion, by making reference to: another type of "Tourbillon " ; thus; making it obvious; that there are various types of "Tourbillon ", without further explanation.
Leaving the person with no know prior knowledge of a :Tourbillon, more confused .
your host looks like a daniel craig spoof lol
This is your host speaking, good to hear I have a second career option - Andrew
You sure are cute Andrew!
Zhangsta or does Daniel Craig look like Andrew McUtchen?
Isn’t he!
Absolutely Wonderful, wonderful pieces of engineering, just beautiful. But, are they more accurate than radio controlled watches? I doubt it, and that is what a watch is actually for - simply for telling the time accurately.
I once had a high end watch, until it started losing time at the rate of about 5 mins a day - at which point it became useless as a watch, because it was only accurate once every 12 hours, which is exactly the same as a watch which has stopped!!!
No mechanical watch will ever be as accurate as quartz. But they can be calibrated to minimize the amount of time lost/gained per day. 5 mins is way too much and just may mean it needs to be calibrated. The max inaccuracy is +/-60s per day and that's for a vintage watch
I think the Swiss really overcharge. If a Chinese can do one for few hundred dollars, the Swiss should charge a few thousand for white gold, the work is the same in a fake watch. Of course a little more hours for polishing, and better material, but asking for hundreds of thousands of dollars , to millions of dollars is crazy. I can't wait for the day a Chinese do a real brand for a few thousand dollars so we can all have one. A MacBook is more complicated than all these watches. And you only get 18k gold most of the time. It is gross that a watch cost like a Ferrari. Yes , it is nice but overpriced. I have a Rolex Daytona. Yes , it is nice, but has its technology improved over the decades? No. Just new color. And asking price is multiple times it once was for stainless steel. Don't tell me you are running out of stainless steel. I got mine for around US$10,000. Now it is US$20,000 at least. Don't you Swiss think normal people deserve the quality of a Daytona? It is like selling a 286 computer for US$20,000 and they don't even keep good time (compared to a Casio). Yes , they are fine watches. My complaint is you guys are pushing it. We are in the age of nano tech. I buy your watches but feel sorry for the new generation who can even afford a good quality watch because of you Swiss guys. You are ripping people off and you know it. Let's say...you sell a Daytona for US$10,000 today. Would you lose money? I don't think so. More people can afford it. This is why Europe is going down!
Good point
I remember when a Rolex 18k gold President was $1225.00 they now are over $31,000.00. Seems a little overpriced!!!
Grand Seiko is Japanese and beautiful
Like Chinese wine?
Mmmm.. thing you're forgetting is the innate nature of human beings wanting to be exclusive, showboating and wealthy. Mankind's entire desire to "flex" that is why we have capitalism in the first place. No watch brand is worth what they charge, but if they don't charge that amount.. the person wearing it can't be "above" other people and look "rich"...
I’m still none the wiser how I tourbillion works
Why isnt this guy playing baseball for the Pittsburg pirates

Not very professional video ... you are making report about very expensive watch and , cuts are not "covered" , what you can expect from amateur thing , not something like this. Camera is fine, reporter also , but editing is not really good.
Toubillion=Money wood chipper. =O
I'm probably stupid or he didn't mention how it works.
Aguante Casio F-91w
Him constantly looking back at the camera after asking a question makes me uncomfortable
the host with the rollie in hublot department ...thug.....!

human really funny, you have Digital clock in your smartphone, don't you ?
I had one hublot is a trash company poor quality only a show off !
That’s a $179,000 watch. Just a bit more than my house.
Bad impatient interviewer, bad camerawork

Hublot is a joke
@Enea Burkhart forgot that Seiko makes quartz watches... I rather wear an SKX than that Hublot
