I'll say it again, this is how you know your subscribers love and respect your channel, you guys didn't have to run the same gauntlet as other channels,. Most start their Judas Priest journey with Painkiller, which sounds very much like speed/thrash metal. To whom ever requested this, bravo!
Its a bold move to start out their journey with the early Priest material. Some of us fans love it even more than the 80's metal material...

I know that I love this better than their 80s stuff. One of the things I’ve noticed about almost all rock from the 70s, even this and Black Sabbath, is that it’s hard but it doesn’t stress me out. Something changed in the 80s that causes the muscles in my shoulders, neck, and back to tense up. I do love much of that music, but I can’t listen to it for too long as it stresses me out. 70s rock, even heavy metal, doesn’t do that to me, and much of it relaxes me.

Whenever I hear anything off Sad Wings it takes me back to when I was 8 years old. Walking through a flea market with my dad, I looked down and saw the cover art and bugged him for the 50 cents to buy the cassette. 46 years later and I'm still a metal lover thanks to this album.

Judas Priest's sound, starting with "Screaming for Vengeance" changes pretty radically - keep that in mind. This album/song is from the golden years of Priest.
Their sound actually morphed a good bit with British Steel and then took an interesting turn with Point of Entry....THEN they solidified into the 80s Priest with Screaming for Vengeance. The only one of those I would really consider some "radical" change was Point of Entry. Frankly, I love them all and it excites me when a band changes with the times (thus I'm a HUGE Rush fan too).
This is the first real metal band , I grew up listening to them, but albums from 78 to 82 when his voice is at its peak

This is an oldie, from their second album, from 1976. But it's a really good song. Thank you for not initiating yourselves with Painkiller. I'm sure many were hoping you to react to this one in a Live performance...like from the '83 US Festival. I was there on my 21st B-day.

The band Judas Priest hails from Birmingham, England. They are known as the "metal gods" because of their amazing hardcore metal riffs and Rob Halfords extraordinary vocal range. I love JP's early music--particularly their rock ballads--Dreamer/Deceiver, Beyond the Realms of Death, Before the Dawn, Diamonds and Rust (an old Joan Baez song), and Run of the Mill. JP also did an amazing rock-opera type of a theme album called Nostradamus that went thru his life. All fantastic songs.

Great reaction. Judas Priest is really where Heavy Metal started. There were other bands before them for sure, i.e. Black Sabbath; but Priest is where the sound and style of Heavy Metal coalesced. Check out "Rapid Fire" from British Steel, "The Hellion/Electric Eye" from Screaming for Vengeance, "The Ripper" (Live) from Unleashed in the East and "Hell Bent for Leather" from the album of the same name.

This was early Judas Priest from 1976 - their 2nd album 'Sad wings of destiny'... Priest were still developing as a band, but they still play 'Victim of changes' live in concert. The band came from Birmingham, England (same as Black Sabbath) and they made the heavy metal genre faster and more aggressive in the late 70's/ 80's. Priest also popularized the image of heavy metal by dressing in leather outfits w/ metal studs after vocalist Rob Halford (who is gay and wanted to express himself onstage) visited an S&M shop in 1978 and bought an outfit w/ leather, studs, chains, and a bullwhip... the other members of Priest thought he looked striking and started wearing the leather outfits. In the 80's, most heavy metal bands took that image for themselves.
Judas Priest was a local rock band in Birmingham in the 70's... K.K. Downing (guitar) and Ian Hill (bass) were joined by Rob Halford (vocals) in 1973... and then Glenn Tipton (guitar) in 1974, making Priest a twin-lead guitar band and setting a new standard for playing heavy metal music... The band changed drummers frequently, and their first 2 albums were not successful by 1976.
In 1977, an American label CBS Records signed Judas Priest and brought them to the States to tour as an opening act... Priest persisted in touring and releasing new albums and were touring Japan by 1979... Their 6th album 'British Steel' became their first gold-selling album in 1980 as Dave Holland (drums) joined... By 1982, Judas Priest had a platinum record 'Screaming for vengeance' and were playing arenas worldwide as one of the biggest heavy metal bands in the world. Rob Halford's piercing high range vocals were a trademark of Priest and made him a star of the band...
Unfortunately, Priest were also targets of politicians in the 80's, accused of making 'obscene' records... In 1989, they were sued in Nevada for allegedly inspiring a double suicide of 2 fans by inserting a 'subliminal command' in a song from 1978. Priest went on trial and had to prove in court that the alleged 'command' was purely coincidental, and were acquitted... but the experience was a traumatic one.
Priest released their angriest and fastest album 'Painkiller' in 1990 w/ Scott Travis (drums) joining... But in 1992, vocalist Rob Halford announced he was leaving Judas Priest for a solo career.
In 1997, Judas Priest finally emerged w/ new vocalist Tim 'Ripper' Owens and released 2 albums by 2001, but fans would not widely accept the band without Rob Halford... Halford himself was having trouble selling records as a solo artist by 2002 w/ his bands - Fight... 2wo... and then the band Halford.
In 2004, the long-awaited announcement came that Judas Priest was reuniting w/ Rob Halford on vocals for a new tour and records...and Priest was back playing big venues and selling albums... They celebrated 30 years of the 'British Steel' album in 2009 by playing the entire album in concert.
In 2010, founding guitarist K.K. Downing quit Judas Priest, citing differences w/ guitarist Glenn Tipton and the band's management... Richie Faulkner (guitar) replaced Downing in 2011... In 2018, Priest's album 'Firepower' charted in the top 5 in the US charts. However, Glenn Tipton (guitar) announced that he was battling Parkinson's disease and would be replaced on tour by guitarist Andy Sneap (who was the band's producer)...Priest has a new record in the works.
In 2019, K.K. Downing formed the band K.K.'s Priest w/ former Priest vocalist 'Ripper' Owens and will have 2 albums out by this year.
So great to watch someone react to anything but Painkiller. I'm not saying it's a bad Judas Priest song, but it is a song that definitely does not define them. I highly suggest you boys check out the Priest album "Sin after Sin"

Painkiller was their response to the Thrash scene. It was not indicative of most of their music, this one is. Old school blues based metal.
Long time priest fan here! Rob halfords voice is my serenity in every way. They have such a diverse catalog of music. Start with some older stuff and then progress from there. They are legands. Trust me you will not regret going down this rabbit hole!

Yes! Priest really took off at the end of the 70s and the early 80s saw them hit their peak. But in the early to mid 70s Sad Wings of Destiny was their best record. Prelude which is a short piece runs into the song, Tyrant and is another great song. And The Ripper is another favorite of mine. Tipton and Downing are a great dual guitar tandem. Oh man! What an absolute metal classic! I'd been hoping you guys would do this one. The early days of metal, a little slower (a la Sabbath), but hard and sharp. And Rob Halford's vocals ...were you ready for the concluding scream? Great one guys!
As many here will agree, your next Priest should be them live at the "Old Grey Whistle Test" performing "Dreamer Deceiver/Deceiver". There's a ton of great Priest, but you should start with the earlier '70s stuff before moving into the '80s.
I really hope the next time you listen to "Victim of Changes" you choose a live version. Especially their 1982 live Vengeance performance.
Such faraway memories. Back in the mists of the 1970s myself & my best friend Steve were the only 2 weird kids in a boring school. I was Punk Kid, He was Rock Kid. We ended up friends through being in the football team. We made a deal, he'd come with me to punk gigs & I'd go with him to rock gigs. Gigs are no fun on your own, you need someone to talk to & share the experience. Also, lets be honest, at those sort of gigs in England in the 70s you needed someone to watch your back too !
Looking back now it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Without it I would never have thought to have gone to see so many bands that I'm now eternally grateful to have caught at or near their best, between 1978 & 1982. Judas Priest were one of those. Along with Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, Motorhead, UFO, Black Sabbath & many others. Of course there were some duds too, it wasn't all greatness ! (April Wine & Whitesnake spring to mind as particularly awful nights) Oh...& the Sabbath gig in 78 featured an almost unknown support band who were promoting their debut album. Van Halen they were called...I think they went on to do OK 🤣

Beyond the Realms of Death... powerful song by Priest
This is definitely the album to start with for Judas Priest! Every song on it is wonderful, I think it’s their best. Back when I first bought the album in the late 70s I just loved the sound. Recently, through watching reaction videos, I’ve learned how incredible Rob Halfords voice is. He has an incredible vocal range, and he is somehow able to reach those smooth high notes and and raspy screams and them drop down to smooth buttery low notes. The man knows how to exercise and care for his vocal chords, as can be seen in his live performances 40 years later. He’s amazing!
Then there’s K.K. Downing, their killer lead guitarist. I love the guitar gymnastics he performs in this song. This album was produced by the same guy as Black Sabbath used on their first three albums. You guys really have to react to a live version of this song to see Rob and the guys perform this flawlessly, and to see Robert Halford demonstrate his vocal range with out a hint of strain is not something you should miss!

This is (arguably) one of the greatest JP albums. It's slightly before they arrived at the JP sound everyone knows today: it's a more chill vibe, which is not really a phrase you tend to connect with this band. Today, everyone expects to hear something like "Painkiller" and an album like this is almost guaranteed to elicit a, "Wait, WTF, this is JP?" moment. Another good album to check out is "Priest... Live!" which has a lot of their classic hits, but the live versions are somehow bigger, punchier and (imo) better than the original studio versions.
I almost agree. 3 of their best songs are on this record, Victim of Changes, Prelude/Tyrant and The Ripper are awesome songs.
"Painkiller" is just a hard listen. I hate it when people start there, since it is not representative of their sound.

Though, their song Angel came later, which is an epic power ballad, so they remained pretty diverse in styles.
This is the Judas Priest that I first heard in 1978 in concert at the Palladium in NYC…
I saw Judas Priest back in 1978 on a double bill with Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica Ca....sat about 5 - 10 rows back.....fresh and new and loud as hell....
This was the beginning of hard rock, that song was two songs in one whiskey woman and red light lady❤

I am only a casual fan of Judas priest, so I can only speak to "Another Thing Comin" and "Breakin the law" and other such hits, and , especially, "Green Manalishi," the Fleetwood Mac song they covered. In BLOOD! OK, well, yeah, but they did do it harder, and justice, and it's awesome!! Especially the LIVE version, OMG!

The reason you’re diggin this Che is cause Judas Priest is from the same era and city (Birmingham, UK) as Black Sabbath. They didn’t hit huge until 1980 with “British Steel” album, which has their real banger biggest famous hits. (“Breaking the Law” “Living After Midnight”). Heavy Metal is partially based on the fact that the British bands from Birmingham represented the people from steel working (kinda like Pittsburgh is Steel City USA) and so the heavy pounding music really resonated with and sounded like a Heavy Metal/Steel town. Sabbath and Priest are icons of both their home and godfathers of Metal. Glad you’re enjoying!

Judas Priest has been around since 1969 they are the Metal Gods and trade marked as such. They have been my favorite band since 1979, Sad Wings of Destiny is their 2nd studio album and is more bluesy rock than metal but the following albums after 76 are all metal, but you can still hear the blues influence in the guitar work. Best band ever and have influenced many many bands Metallica being 1, Iron Maiden, Pantera etc.
There are a lot of Priest songs. "Desert Plains," The Sinner, The Ripper, Diamonds & Rust, Breakin the Law, Electric Eye.etc.
Nice, Priest put metal in to heavy metal. They have 18 albums all different. The lead singer is Rob Halford known as the metal god. You guys need to do a main stream classic like You've Got Another Thing Coming, You need to watch a live version of them to see the talent. Try Sentinel live from Fuel For Life Tour 86.
It's impossible to pick my favourite Judas Priest song because I like every song off of every album up till painkiller don't get me wrong I wasn't too keen on the other guy but when Rob Halford came back Judas Priest was whole again❤ he still my metal god

Kudos for getting the first from an early album. First time I saw them live was 1978, opening up for Bachman Turner Overdrive and Foghat. Quite the opening act.
Me too. Saw them with those bands in 1978. Great concert. I was there for Priest, was a huge fan of theirs. I was still 12 by a few days. They came back about 6 months later and were headlining.
@@markwilliams6394 high five. I was in the DFW area and saw Priest open for UFO in a 3000 seater at Texas Hall on the UTA campus a short time later in 78. I was in my upper teens and we had all the albums up to that point.
@randybaker6042 I saw them in Corpus Christi at the now gone Coliseum. Rob is a nice guy. I met him on the Screaming for Vengeance tour. The bus driver kept trying to get him on the bus but Rob told him, these are our fans who buy our records and see us live and I have plenty of time to spend with them. He stayed out there for about 20 minutes just talking and signing autos for everybody.
Saw them live back in their day and it was a fantastic show. Harleys were revved up on stage in the small indoor arena I was at and of course the sound system picked it up and it was thunderous and you can smell the gasoline and the exhaust and everything and then it was off to the races. What a great show.
Love this. Once again it was all about treble. Old School heavy metal.

Love your channel. Priest has a very diverse catalog. They go from hard rock to a couple of very heavy songs. What stays true is they are tight as hell and Halford has an amazing voice. I like at least a couple of songs from almost every album they've put out.

My, does this take me back 40 years. Priest's early catalogue resembles Black Sabbath (I suspect I'll get flamed for saying that...), but they were probably more responsible than anyone else for heavy metal's resurgence in the 1980s with their album British Steel. Simplified the genre and introduced some pop sensibility to earn steady airplay on FM radio. Metal Gods, Living After Midnight, Breaking The Law all opened new doors for the genre.

British heavy metal band whose career began in the mid 1970s (this song is 1976 or 1977) and they peaked in popularity between 1980 - 1985. Obvious Led Zeppelin influence in both the music & vocals of this song. Heavy metal is a tricky label for a band. Bands like Priest play what seems closer to hard rock when compared to today's heavy metal. Excellent group...you guys are really getting into some great music, though you won't find another Led Zeppelin while on this journey. They took a little bit of everything, mixed it together, and made pure magic. Great individual musicians, but their chemistry is what truly set them apart. The whole was far greater than the sum of their parts. No one sings like Plant, no one drums like Bonzo, no one exceeds JPJ in sheer diversity of musical contributions, and no one conveys emotions through an instrument better than Jimmy Page on guitar. Also, no one produces an album quite like Jimmy Page, and that truly set them apart from their peers
They just released new songs. Rob is 72 now and Glenn is 76. Think a lil about that when you listen to one of them new blasters ❤
