I live in Klamath Falls and just a few corrections. First there is gas available at Mazama Village along with cabins, a general store , campground and small restaurant. The reason Crater Lake does not freeze very often is not because of the Pacific Ocean it is because of it's depth of just under 2000 feet. The caldera creates a bowl and the uv light from the sun helps retain the heat. We have dozens of lakes around here and during a normal winter most will either completely or partially freeze over. The rangers give scheduled talks on the geology and history of the lake but this is mostly in the summer. This year 2021 I heard that the formal restaurant in the Lodge at the rim will only be open to guests staying at the hotel. This is disappointing because we would go up there 4 or 5 times a year for breakfast or dinner. If visiting the Lake do take the time to go to Becky's at Union Creek or go through the North entrance and visit nearby Diamond Lake and then continue another 15 to 25 miles and see 5 wonderful waterfalls one of which is truly amazing ( Toketee ).
@@RunTheAtlas At Becky's they have great homemade pies, the Huckleberry is my favorite. You can pick the berries about 2 miles from there in late June you just have to keep your eyes out for bears.
My and my family have visited Crater Lake several times during summer time. Went down to touch the water and swim. I can tell you that the water is not that cold to swim. I always see a lot of people, specially, young people jumping from rocks into the water. I have swam myself in the water and with a go pro camera one can capture the most amazing shots under Crater Lake.
From Australia. I visited Crater lake in June 2011 and the snow completely coverd the Lodge. Fabulous place seeing as where I come from there is no snow.

I have been there several times.. It is underdeveloped which I like. You are expected to take care of yourself. Don't go too close to that rim on a hike there's nothing to stop you! It's a must see enjoy
It is not always clear deep blue. I have seen it very yellow from the tree pollen. I was born in Medford, Oregon and I frequently visit Crater Lake. One of my favorite places to visit, following Yellowstone and the Giant Redwoods. I have been going to Crater Lake for over 60 years. And I took my girlfriend for her first ever visit. She was absolutely thrilled.
When I went there a few weeks back, It snowed really hard last night and I had to sleep in the car. Really pretty view the next day though, and hey! No Mosquitos!
If you want to stay at the Lodge, make your reservations at least six months in advance. If you want to take the boat ride, buy your ticket in advance, too. Not all boat tickets are the same. Some allow you to be dropped off at Wizard Island and be picked up a couple of hours later.
I happen to be one of the only drone operators to have flown a drone at everyone of the pullout points at crater lake in 2014. Including a sunset video to 14000 feet above the highest point drivable on the north side! Amazing views

Thank you for this video. I am on a quest to visit all 50 states by age 50. I hit Michigan August 2023, and I'm booking Oregon for early October, 2023. I've been going back and forth about the drive to/from Crater Lake and "is it worth it?" I had COVID in February, 2023, and I'm still having some long COVID effects. I hiked at The Ghost Ranch in Santa Fe, NM, in June, 2023, and at about 7,000 feet, I got winded so quickly. It was exhausting. So, Crater Lake is similar height, and to be honest, the lack of things to do there other than drive around really doesn't make the five (5) hours from Portland worth it.
We were there in Mid June. The line-up to get into the park was 45 minutes and as it turned out the only thing open was the visitor center, gift shop and lodge. The rim road was closed. The views were beautiful but given how long it took to get there (and get in!), it was a fail. We wished we had spent our time seeing other sites.
Ya the cell signal out there can be quite spotty. There's specific spots where u won't get any signal by another area close by or within 100 to 200ft u will get signal. My last visit there I noticed the entire climb up watchman peak u do get Internet. Also there is gas there, the 1 dual gas station there is in the south entrance at that lil store in the mazama camp ground area
Most of Oregon has stunningly beautiful scenery. It's a bummer the visitors center doesn't have any reference to the geology of the area. The lake has a constant level of water that doesn't have an outlet implies a subterranean lake beneath the lake people enjoy. It's on my bucket list of beautiful places to see.
There is a place near Bend called Lava Lands that does have information about how the caldera and lake were formed. There is a LOT of volcanic history in Central Oregon.

I visited Crater Lake a month ago and the Ring Road is truly spectacular which I traveled on my motorcycle. Being acrophobic, it was the most terrifying experience in my life given that the road has no guardrails for the most part. I got in free because I'm ex-military. Well, sort of.
They have major alert water problems so make sure you prepare and check the authorized office. State Parks, National State Parks for updates on water and fire and road closures.
We have snow in Michigan upper peninsula till June at some time and get 200'' of snow a year that doesn't impress me lake superior is just as cool in summer there then that it is very amazing and awesome 👍👍👍👍👍
The descriptions of this park could be the descriptions for pretty much every national park I have ever visited-remote, no internet, not great food. I am not there for any of that, I am there for the National Park. I was hoping for a little more detail on what makes the park great and nice places to look at Crater Lake.
Definitely bring a extra hoody or jacket i was cold on the boat ride also the boat ride could be a hour shorter .the hike down and back up is tough .im 71 and hike several times a week in wisc but this 700 foot walk back up is pretty strenuous but fun.if you are out of shape just take your time walk at your speed dont try to keep up to the athletes .
We spent a few hours in the park taking pics and doing light hiking (it was mostly snowed in) but the surrounding area has a lot of waterfalls so we went there after.

Give yourself at least an hour, but probably longer for the hike back up. Getting down takes 15 minutes or so lol. Make sure you have plenty of water with you. It's a bunch of switchbacks so not super steep, but you will feel it.

Yes, a few people have come up missing up there, and YES, Sasquatch are very real and occasionally are seen in the Park, and the vast area of National Forests and Wilderness areas that surround the Park. Sasquatch avoid contact with humans but encounters do happen. Remember, the area is remote and vast. Respect ALL wildlife, it's their domain.
YES, SASQUATCH, they are very REAL. Don't even think about hunting one down and killing it as they are NOT legal game. NO hunting tags are issued. They are best left alone. If you happen to see one or more, Welcome to the REAL WORLD.
You can swim in the lake pretty safely if you actually keep moving. You just can't immerse yourself in the water while you do nothing but sit or float around. It is cold - uncomfortably cold - but it's not life-threatening unless you already have too many problems to go in.
Public parks and wilderness areas which do not have admission fees seem to always attract the sorts of campers (or squatters) who wreck the place, burn everything they can find, and leave behind all sorts of garbage.
You sound as if you didnt find the lake & park to be all that. Perhaps you would get more out of a visit to San Francisco. Not everyone is all that into the outdoors. !

I go up there a lot and there's a restaurant called the rim cafe and it has amazing hot food.

We are visiting this July. We want to take the boat ride. My family can do the walk down, but how's the walk back up? How steep is it?
There is a 2.2-mile round-trip trail (down to the boat dock and back) that drops approximately 700 ft

Yes snow on a mountain that is 7,000 ft elevation. It doesn't warm up anywhere in the High Cascades until the 4th of July.
The highest elevation in the park is around 9,000 ft.
Did you go all the way up the mountain I think there is a historic building ?
One of the best things to do is get a drink, coffee, cobbler or other sweet treat from the lodge and sit on the back deck while gazing at the lake
