  • Lassen Volcanic National Park is one of California's nine national parks and it is located in Northern California. The park is centered around Lassen Peak, a dormant volcano that erupted in the early 1900s. The park features hundreds of miles of hiking trails, stunning waterfalls and many geothermal features. Let me know what your favorite spot is in Lassen Volcanic National Park in the comments.

Lassen would've definitely been one of California's most famous national parks with the volcanos, geothermal activity, and general Californian Alpine Nature all in one if it was more south, but hey, hidden gems are called gems for a reason.

I was there in 1966, an Old Man told us about seeing it erupt from San Francisco; after his stint in the Great War he hiked to the top with a group. He said there were a lot of geysers and fumerals active in the crater. He also told us about enjoying the San Francisco Earthquake and the clean up & rebuilding.
When I was there in 1966 there were still a lot of broken trees from the 1915 eruption.

I can’t express enough how awesome Cinder Cone is. It was brutal as hell to get up, but it’s one of my favorite hikes of any National Park I’ve been to and I rarely hear people talk about it!

I live in chester ca, just down the hill from lassen and right on lake almanor. My family and i go up to lassen at least 3 times a year. We love taking our dinner up to lake Helen and backcountry snowboarding in the winter. Its nice to see someone taking an interest in the area and making lassen Park more popular!

Thank you so much for this fabulous video! Very helpful for a trip I'm planning with my sons next year. I now know the places we'll plan to visit within Lassen Volcanic National Park. And I also now realize I need to increase my workouts and endurance level to be able to keep up with my early-20s sons. :)

Cold Boiling Lake is an interesting point, too. It's essentially a thermal feature near the end of its life. The water in the lake is cold, and gasses bubble up from the shallow active spot at the lake's edge. It's accessed from the King's Creek Picnic Area and the trail leads into the back end of the Bumpass Hell boardwalk.

About 20 years ago drove the trip very late at night. Saw a lot of critters included two red artic foxes that had been recently released and what looked like an otter or very big beaver. The foxes where about 4 miles apart just walking along the road. lived near the area for a couple years.

Butte lake, cinder cone, fantastic lava beds, painted dunes, snag lake, and the red cinder cone are all on the butte lake entrance of the park.. also the campground is decent, has running water and flushing toilets. So it’s easy to stay a few nights camping and hiking.. even swimming in the lake. Plus it’s not quite as busy there because of the lack of services.. it deters the people on day trips.

My husband and I tried three different times, all in April on our way home from the Tulip Festival in Washington state. Two times the north entrance was closed ten miles in and once from the south entrance, which was closed five miles in. I still want to go, but don’t want to be disappointed again.

July and August are definitely the best times to visit. I go all year round but I live near there and have snowshoes. If you’re not camping and just making a day trip it’s best to get there early, maybe as early as 8am to beat the crowds and get parking close to the most popular spots.
