Ford's Toughest Engine? It BLEW Up!

- Ford's Toughest Engine? In my opinion, before this experience, the 3.5L N/A engine was Ford's toughest engine ever made. These engines never die, well at least they did not before I owned one. Now, I might have to rethink what engine is really Ford's toughest engine.
Thanks for watching!

The 4.9 300 straight 6 is the best motor ford ever made! This new stuff cant even compare!
Facts. Had one in my 91 f150 and it was amazing! I miss that truck everyday!
What about the 3.0 Vulcan which is known to hit over 300k miles
When I said 2.0 . I was referring to modern engines . Still in service and being produced . So to speak . The 300 inline 6 and the Vulcan 3.0 litre . V6 where both extremely reliable . Simple engine design with very low cost of ownership . As we have moved forward . More is demanded of engines . Meeting tighter emissions . Being top along with light weight . And higher power from less displacement . Have increased the complexity . Leading to more things to go wrong . So unfortunately a comparison to older designs is not really fair
I didn't see a 300 I6, so I can't say you were working on Ford's toughest engine, bud. No offense, but I've been a master certified tech longer than this guy's been alive. Several years at a Ford dealer, too.....
Fact my dad and grandpa had them they would keep up with the V8s
The 3.5 and 3.7 NA engine are tanks, I've seen several transit with 300 to 400k miles on them with the original powertrain
I've got 250K on my 08 Taurus and have only done the water pump and plugs and coils in 13 years. 👍
Rear wheel drive units are amazing. External water pump!
How did this one get so jacked up? Or are those transits with extensive service (I consider extensive meaning anything outside of oil changes and consumables before 200k... Cam chains, phasers, water pumps etc are not consumables)
2013 f 150 3. 7 v6 6 speed auto..Bullitt proof no problems .
Car business is a tough business. That was a pretty humbling video though. Bought for $1200, put a water pump in and the engine is full of metal. "I am going to sell this for $10 grand" 🤣 And then you. made $1k on it🤣
Once you get coolant in the engine like that, the engine is junk. Swap a used engine in and move on. I have tried in the past to run with it, but have failed miserably.
I bought an Edge a couple years back as a repo with a locked up engine. I expected to put an engine in it, but checked it out. Alternator was locked up. New alternator and it was back on the road.
I see the 3.7's take a hell of a beating in police interceptors and keep going
yeah, but you arent the one workin on em, cause youd change your mind pretty quick... they are pricey and not worth it... Like the sho motor in the taurus, nobody wants to work on it...
I have a 3.7 cyclone, but mine is the superior version with an externally mounted water pump.
In the f150?
@imabebebebe2496 Probably a old v6 mustang ....
F150 2013 3. 7 in mine and also 2016/17 Mustangs
@@imabebebebe2496 Yes, an F150.
The fact he says it is indestructible and then still makes a video where it blew up speaks volumes about him. At least he will tell you when he fell on his face lol
There is no such thing as a indestructible engine.
For real. He was wrong and had integrity to post it still.
You didn't loose money but you also have to consider to free labor your providing to get that number. Been there in my experience i learn more from doing side jobs like this great work!
I was thinking there is no way that car is just going to run fine after all that 😂 rod bearings said see ya!
Glad you didn't lose money on it. I still prefer older engines personally due to better reliability, likely due to less crap on 'em. As far as diesels go, I love my 6.7L PSD, but I'd delete it if I knew somebody who could. I know the EGR alone will murder it LONG before it would die otherwise.
Better get deleting. Times ticking.
That's why you buy a pre emission diesel, way cheaper to begin with.
Did my first 3.5 duratech water pump job and your videos have been a godsend, keep up the good stuff man
New subscriber here, seen a few videos and gotta say, this is way more teachable then scotty kilmer and the UA-cam channel the car wizard, you actually show yourself working on the cars, not just talking
used to have 2013 edge... no issues with engine but tons of tranny issues... been at ford dealer 5 times in 1 year for tranny issues and finally traded it in to different brand
I just repaired one with the same issue. Water pump and metal in the solenoids. Cleaned them and ran fine.
I like the cyclone series... when they're placed longitudinally with the external water pump. This engine was clearly designed for that application (probably via the Mustang) first, then adapted for transverse with some corner cutting.
I am not a ford guy, but these 3.5 n/a V6 had zero issues when I was wrenching. The water pump design (being in the timing area) is not good but they also didn’t have a high failure rate and the Job isn’t that hard to do if you know what you are doing. Saw ford edge vehicles with 200k plus miles and the performed like new still.
Yep the coolant damaged the bearings. Should of messaged me and I would of saved you some time and effort. by the way the 3.7 is plug and play to replace the 3.5 Got me an SEL with a 3.7 in it. Tuned, ported intakes and Magnaflow exhaust
A family member has one of these with over 275,000 miles and running strong!
I have 95 Grand Cherokee. 238,000 and still starts like the first day. I had a chevy c10 with straight 6 and 3 on the tree over 200,000 didn't use any oil and ran great. Only reason I don't have truck anymore got t boned and totaled.
Who’s that? I hear someone. Oh Rodney, it’s just you knocking.
That Friday night hypothetizing sometimes backfires. Lol
Nice clean install from what I could see really quick.
My 2003 Ford F-150 with 4.6L is a great engine with over 200k miles.
Did the Frame rust out like they all do in Minnesota
Them 3.5s are great engines, just make sure you change the antifreeze every 50,000 miles or sooner. It greatly extends the life of the water pump.
Yeah once the water/coolant makes it to the oil pan it's pretty much game over for any engine. But yeah 3.5 can stand quite a ton of neglect
My question has been how and why do the metal fragments make it through filtration into the solenoids? I can understand the microscopic grey deposits but chunks?
After the filter is clogged it keeps pumping oil through the system. It’s a fail safe filters have to keep the engine from totally seizing up but it doesn’t always happen
My 01 4.0 200.000 +. Same timing chain starter ready for valve cover gasket on passenger side spring
My experience is once they get coolant inside they are on borrowed time. I only write them up for an engine if it's milkshake.
How is this Ford doesn't build the fe anymore or the 385 series or the 335 series or the Windsor or the Cleveland. They build junk now gas or diesel. Love your channel your awesome.
I didn't no they made diesel engine in that Ford vehicle. O wait its not a diesel, lol
I almost got a 2010 edge with the 3.5 from my dad's coworker. Engine blew up like a week before I was gonna send him the money lmao
Being a ford, it could still qualify for the toughest/best engine (considering the other engines it has to compete with)
214k on my wifes 2011 edge, still going strong!
You said that you made $1K off of the Edge. But how much did you factor in your time on that entire deal being worth? I’m thinking that you more or less broke even. BUT, I might have missed something. 🤨
Sounds like a Ford! Mine did, too, i got a 2015 toyota Tundra 5.7 L and never looked back!
Personally i like the 3.7 used in the f150s and mustangs
I have a 2010 Ford Flex 3.5 Ecoboost and am having a cylinder #2 misfire. There is oil inside of the cylinder and mechanics have said that inside the cylinder is damaged and I need a new motor. The vehicle still starts but runs very rough and blows white smoke out the exhaust. The vehicle had no issues until it had the biggest issue. We hit a minor bump in the road and the next thing I know the vehicle lost power. What could have caused this?
Mason , I'm finishing up a 2018 ford escape engine , I pulled it from the top , yes it is possible but a total nightmare...... I saw your video on one of these cars you pulled the dash , I'm sure you scream at the sight of these (ford escape se ecoboost ) 😊
Idk bro seen older motor like vulcan 3.0 run alot longer less repair and cheaper to maintain
my 2016 Edge has 185k on it and still going strong.
I bet there were engineers at Ford that hated building an internally driven water pump. No doubt knowing it would ruin many thousands of engines and give an otherwise great engine and brand a bad name.
There is a bunch of cars that run internal water pumps, and timing belt driven water pumps. Not the greatest voice, but
Did you at least put the new water pump on the replacement engine?
You win many, but you lose some.
As a career technician I can say: “there’s always that one that humbles you”.
Don't you understand what coolant in engine oil does to engine bearings??
He knows. We know. But most of the time when we’ve seen coolant in the oil and it comes out ok and runs well long term. . This was an unfortunate exception.
Probably from the lack of lubrication from the water in the oil.
My 3.5 in explorer blew up at 150k. Rod cracked block.
"what did you think was going to happen?"
"Im gone sell this thing to someone for 10 grand"😂😂😂
Fordbossme seems to have it out for you!
300 i6 and the 351 and 7.3 stroker
My 5.4 Triton has 306,000 but it spit a plug 2 weeks ago 😞 My mechanic neighbor fixed it for me, running like a top again!
2v or 3v?
@@noobjitsu1743 it’s a 2V. Been a really good truck so far but it had to go & spit that plug.
I do have a 3V as well. It has 252,000 miles on it. It has a little bit of an issue right now. I think a phaser is sticking. It runs ok above 45 below that you have to take it out of overdrive.
@@dennylittle7633 I locked my cam phazers out and upgraded the oil pump. The phazers cant give you an issue if they cant move and you get a tuner out if it!
@@noobjitsu1743 is locking the phasers out a tear the motor apart job?
My 4l V6 was a tank....that thing ran and ran
How about the 7.3 powerstroke? Since you didnt specify fords best gas or diesel engine
International made the 7.3
100% one of the best engines ford ever made.
the old 6cyl and the 5.0 are the best motors ford has ever made
Living on the edge...
How many miles of Neglect.?
always pull engine and check bearings yeaperz
Do you have any experience with walnut blasting intake valves on ecoboost engines?
I BOUGHT A FORD AFTER WATCHING YOUR CHANNEL IM REGRETTING BUYING ONE,
Sounds like a normal ford to me. Rods knocking and going home in a trailer. What's different about that?
I dont know nothin bout no cars or even chainsaws but i blew up my poulan 306a and im pissed. Maybe poulan amd ford are using the same materials for their parts.
I thought the 3.7 was the cyclone?
My fords don't piss in their own cheerios.
never seen one hold up
It was worth a shot
Kids named Mayson? That name isnt a tragedeigh its murghdyrr
The problem is that it was made by ford so saying its the most reliable ford engine is comparing it to the worst gm engine the 99 Northstar
I guess the 5.4s I've seen at or around 7 digits and thousands of 3.0 and 3.7 at 500k...you just keep believing that. I work for a company that's owned by a GM man...covid forced us to buy some Fords, the difference is clear...less problems by a bunch and better performance
Ford ls toughest engine are their inline 6 gas or diesel 0:56 and inline 4 diesel
And those still blow up there most reliable fords tourus sho motor from Yamaha 😅
@Atthewgoop lmao 🤣
I'm talking tractor/ boat motors, the last good diesel Ford made was the senator series
Draining the oil straight onto the ground? Really?
This engine is the best arguably better than the 300 i6 more power and 300k miles all day these engines are cheap because they dont die very easy and im not a ford guy i personally own gms but ive worked on just about everything except a few exotics
With all these engines having VVT’s, why in the fuck, would you engineer the water pump to be internal, so that the oil and water mix, when the pump goes out?
Beyond me. This is why cars would be better off if they were still built like they were in the 1960’s, with better rust proofing and better tolerances.
That’s why I won’t buy any car with an internal water pump.
No piece of machinery will take abuse forever
Can't win them all is what I heard
Thanks for telling us the truth 👍
Win some loss some . Also a ford tech . But I’m going to have to disagree with you . I’ve had a couple of v6 and yes there tough . But the 2.0 NA is the most reliable longest distance engine ford makes
Not the 2.3?
What 2.0 n/a?? You mean 2.3 or 2.5?
You’ve convinced that Fords are junk. I’m really sweating my 3.5 ecoboost 2016 F150.I put a catch can on it from day one and I change the oil every 3k plus air filter every 9 k.Its a clean truck with 48 k on it .I hope it holds together
I heard about a truck like yours went over a million miles, 1st motor lasted like 600,000 miles.
@@dennylittle7633 Good deal
That's why its a FORD (FIX-OFTEN-REPAIR-DAILY)
Not very good advertisement for your mechanical skills😂😂😂
7.tree is best junior...not ford but that don't matter...Fords best is the 3.5 f1titty ecoboost...mine has 400 thousand and still original cam phaser...and chain...it's all about maintenance
Sounds like rod bearing to me
PowerChoke
Well at least ur the free labor hahaha
That a boy you already know,,, they is good ones and bad ones in all of them.
3.5 is second to the 300
FORD cant build a "Tough" Engine anymore!!!
Hard to do that with Plastic Components
For what these cars and Trucks cost today, These motors should never have
to see the light of day
Ford bast motor is the 7.3 power stroke 300 thousand or more miles
No ford engine is better than a toyota or honda engine
Heck yes runs like a sewing machine.
The Ford 3.5 is a pile of trash.Look the price of them used, over $2,000.00 with a core charge used with yards getting calls for them. Most of those used engines sold on Ebay are from LKQ which they want the old engine back as a core
Wake up junior. 3.5 & 3.7 are a joke. Best Ford engines are in the past not this new BS Engines.
Best Ford engines are the 240/300 inline 6 along with the 302 V8. No other engine in the EcoBoost family will ever be able to hold a candle to the 300 and 302.
This should not happen. Stay away from ford.
Ford has always been junk always will! 😂
Another piece of junk Ford
You lost your ass, don't lie I'm a mechanic I do the same things sorry bud better luck next time
Nothing ford makes is any good, stop kidding yourselves.
My 2007 edge was having an electrical issue, I went to hook up my jump pack just to unlock my doors and was getting a reverse polarity warning. We got to thinking about it and disconnected the alternator, reverse polarity went away. Changed the alternator and all has been well, can't seem to find any info about this problem anywhere.
