Hey Kenny - here's a great jazz fusion album to check out if you've not heard it yet: Brand X - 'Unorthodox Behavior'. This was Phil Collins first side-project while he was still with Genesis; lineup is Phil on drums, Robin Lumley on keyboards, John Goodsall on guitars, and Percy Jones on bass. Phil is such an amazing drummer and this whole band COOKS!
Kenny, I absolutely love your content. Even though I am not an album collector, I use your suggestions to stock my Apple Music choices. Recently I chose all of the Miles box sets that you reviewed. Miles in France 1963 & 1964, one word, EXCELLENT. Sort of reminds me of Ascenseur pour l’echafaud (1958) also recorded in France. I’m a big fan of your channel. Stay strong! RT
I have know about Frank Zappa for over 50 years. The light did not go on for me until recently. Read the book Zappa and was off to the races. Added his first 12 LP’s to my collection and now I totally get it. He was in fact a musical genius. Very creative artist. Wish I found the light when I was 20 years old. Captain Beefheart as well. Well done video. Really enjoy your perspective on music. Keep up the great work. 🎵🙏👍
Another great video!!! I will be starting off 2025 with a tribute to Roy haynes and Lou Donaldson on my radio show. I just received my V disk box set from Mosaic. I'm so excited because there are so many gems!!!!
Jean Luc Ponty! My man! Heard her at the Tower in Philadelphia in the 80s' He had two violins on stage. One on a delay, and he played a number with himself.. it was a great show. I was introduce to Jeff Beck by a friend whom played guitar. Got the Blow by Blow tape and nearly worn it out playing it hours at a time. Was really fascinated by the sound he got..and without electronics. Roxy and Elsewhere... the orchestration of the =tunes is amazing... and quirky. Frank Zappa's Hot Rats was the third album by him that really caught me off guard. Love that album..
My introduction to Jean-Luc Ponty was "Cosmic Messenger" ... fab album! It was part of my introduction to jazz fusion, as an 18-year old! 🤩 Edit: seeing Pat Metheny this evening in London!
A delight to "hear from" you again, Kenny! Whoah is your SECOND selection GREAT. Upon the Wings of Music. BRILLIANT album. Especially the title track, "starring" Patrice Rushen straight after the intro. BOY is her solo EXCITING!!! You mentioned Ponty's earlier Blue Note album, with none other than LEONARD FEATHER (British! 🙃) having written the back album cover notes, but have you heard his composition I REMEMBER BIRD played by Cannonball and Nat Adderley? It's certainly NOT jazz-rock(!!!) bur it's gorgeous nevertheless. It's really a highly melodic funeral oration, and it ALWAYS moves me to tears!!
KENNY I have jazz fusion album different but great the album is called indo-jazz suite Joe hariot john Mayer Indian jazz sitar tenor sax with Indian rhythm section they work together great , there are other albums by them this one is my favorite . Joe hariot is a great tenor man he has other straight ahead jazz offerings , give a listen . If you can’t find the cd you can on Spotify. Let me know what you think………….
Another consideration for your underrated jazz fusion list is John Abercrombie's Timeless. Jack DeJohnette's drum work on the title cut is masterful! Also, Joe Zawinul's solo album (Zawinul) is a good one. His full version of In a Silent Way is truly beautiful!
Brother Kenny, Michael Urbaniak, pronounced Er-ban-knee-ack, stressed on the second syllable. Ursula Dudziak, first name pronounced Er-suh-la, stressed on the first syllable. Another great video my brother, peace and love..(used to study twenty languages).
Thank you for your opinion of the set so far...I'm looking forward to listening to my set when it arrives. Thank you for watching from New Zealand 😊 ✌️
Hi Kenny. I didn't know that one by Jean Luc, but have the Imaginary Voyage and Enigmatic Ocean. Ooo ... You mentioned Patrice Rushen, one of my jazz hearth-throbs back in the day. I really loved her backing of Flora Purim on "You Love Me Only". Ahhh ... 6:35 ... goosebumps, Flora, my all time favorite vocalist. Actually met her and Airto at the old Blue Note in Tokyo. Much thanks for the heads up! Just found Urzula's "Future Talk" on UA-cam ... and you're spot on. I would have pegged her for Flora from the first minute. Guessing from the date of the album, '79, she was heavily influenced by Flora. Out of curiousity, I jumped to the 4th cut, entitiled "Shenkansen" because it is obviously named after the Japanese "Shinkansen" (bullet train). And yeah, it's fast. Sounds like a cross between Flora/Airto and "Havona" from "Heavy Weather". Great for tooling down the expressway. Damn! Just took a look at the list of musicians ... John Abercrombie, Marcus Miller, Kenny Kirkland! All star line-up! Reminds me of a more recent scat-vocal from Poland I heard, though I don't know if it was from an album ... just do a UA-cam search for "pat metheny anna maria jopek". Cool stuff. "Hot Rats", I know, but "Don't You Ever Wash That Thing?" is a new one for me. LOL ... gotta love Frank for soo many reasons. I had found that Jeff Beck album by first hearing Flora Purim's cover of "Freeway Jam". Yeah, Beck is under the radar. My suggestions for under-the-radar albums which might be found in the Fusion section of a big record store ... Hermeto Pascoal's "Slaves Mass" and Oregon's "Out of the Woods" ... about as opposite in mood from each other as possible, but both among my favorites. And when I first moved to Japan, a couple of Japanese fusion bands were ruling the roost, Casiopea, and T-Square ... but will have to do a bit of exploring before I can recommend specific albums. Funny thing, but back in the day, J-Wave 81.3 FM Japan, opened their midnight jazz show with the opening strains of Azymuth's "Fly Over the Horizon" ... a good cut from a very good Brazilian fusion group. Cheers!
Thank you very much for your always awesome comments and thank you for watching my video. I have Hermeto Pascoal album and it's great. Thank you very much for your recommendations 😊 ✌️
@@kennysaudiophilerecordreviewsHermeti Pascoale is absolutely SUPERB on Billy Cobham's HIGHLY original 2nd own-name album Crosswinds, particularly on the track The Pleasant Pheasant, complementing Billy's rock-steady hands on the tiller beautifully.
Diggin' all the Zappa love here. By the way, if you really like The Gumbo Variations on side 2 of Hot Rats, I suggest streaming the track Big Legs(Unedited Master Take) by Zappa. It is the complete session that made up the track, but at 32 minutes, it's never been on vinyl in this form. Great extended blowing by Ian Underwood, Zappa and Sugarcane Harris! Nice video Kenny.
Jeff Becks Blow by Blow and Wired were my bridge into the jazz world from classic rock. Those albums are still epic and swing and rock at the same time.
Gotta includeFlora Purim, particularly her albums where she collaborated with the late great George Duke, my favourites being Open Your Eyes You Can Fly and That’s What She Said🤘🏻
Love the fusion Kenny. You GOTTA include James Blood Ulmer's Black Rock. Unbelievable rhythm section. Incredible record with a Zappa vibe. I had to crate dig to find the LP but it's worth the effort. Peace
Always love your videos… you have great musical insight and represent the diggers well… maybe I missed it but have you made any breakdowns of spiritual jazz? Thanks for sharing your knowledge with all of us…
Soft Machine is extremely underrated. All their albums are very different and pretty awesome. “Third” is probably their experimental fusion peak. “Bundles” with Holdsworth is great but i recommend the live album “Floating World” even more. Great Holdsworth solos including on violin
Well done Kenny a great channel doing something original Keep going man! Sometime you may want to discuss, "Waitress In A Donut Shop" great little record by Maria Muldaur with definite jazz feel to it Regards to ya! Andy UK
Thank you for posting these reviews. Excellently presented. SOFT MACHINE - THIRD (1970). There's an HD remaster release (CD only?) that adds additional live material upping the duration to 1 hr 54 min. FACELIFT is a masterpiece track on this thing.
Also: the side-long track OUT-BLOODY-RAGEOUS. However, I think that Ian Carr's Nucleus was far better, during the years 1972-75, running from BELLADONNA through to UNDER THE SUN, then their music took a nosedive with Alleycat (urgh!) But they produced 1 more excellent album: IN FLAGRANTE DELICTO during 1977. Soft Machine were DESTROYED by the fact that the execrably untalented, hadn't-got-a-clue Carl Jenkins who actually LEFT a then-untalented Nucleus, then to JOIN Soft Machine ... ... Soft Machine's LOSS; Nucleus's GAIN .. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Ponty's Cantaloupe Island (1976) is a reissue of two early albums. One was called King Kong (1970), which was produced by FZ and has the rest of the Mothers at that time performing The other is JLP Experience with the George Duke Trio (1969). Urbaniak's wife name like "Ursula". Zappa Hot Rats = first jazz rock fusion recording.
Have you ever taken a listen to a band by the name of NRBQ? They have played it all from Monk to Carl Perkins to original music. Led by Terry Adams who has played with Marshall Allen and Sun Ra.
Nice list Kenny, my favorites never released on CD. Karl Ratzer - "Street Talk" and "In Search of the Ghost" both albums on Vanguard records. 1978 Phillip Catherine - "Nairam" 1976 Warner Bros. Records
Hi there, I have some that I feel deserve a mention: ‘Dale Jacobs’ Cobra’. This has a very strong side one. ‘Exhibition’ by John Serry and ‘No Comment’ by Tania Maria. Unlikely to be disappointed if you check any of those out.
I have several Tania Maria albums but I do not have that one...I'll have to check it out. Thank you for recommending that album as I think she is great 👍
I had to add this one --- Santana's CARAVANSERAI... Clive Davis told Carlos when he first heard the tapes that this recording was a 'carreer killer'. And in fact nothing like that prediction ever occured. One could next go to Santana's subsequent colaborations with Alice Coltrane and John McLaughlin.
Good video - I've always considered 'Hot Rats' to be the best jazz fusion LP ever. Acoustic Sounds offers an amazing version of 'Blow by Blow' in 2 LP 45 format.
im planning on making a music room in my house with like a vinyl player and stuff (im also a trombone player so id finally have a good place to practice 🙏). I'm not too sure how I would set it up or which vinyl player to get. Also, do you have any starting vinyl recommendations? Thanks and keep up the great work!
Thank you very much for watching my video and your question. I would start a vinyl collection around the specific music and artists that you love and enjoy musically. In terms of audio equipment, I would seek out youtube channels with great knowledge about building a initial stereo system. Two good sources on youtube are the "audiophiliac" and "cheapaudioman"....they have nice videos about equipment and they are very knowledgeable, especially the "audiophiliac"
I had been looking to get around to checking out Frank Zappa's (Hot Rats) album, and I did today. I would say it was pretty decent. An album that I would recommend from around that same era would be Akira Ishikawa album (Count Buffaloes Drums Concerto). Enjoy👍 Brian Eno (Music For Films) is another album you might want to take a listen to???
I still think the best Urbaniak album is Fusion III also check out Ursula's self titled album that came out in 1975. I listened to the Miles 1963 1964 box set all last weekend but I want to wait for your opinion first. I think Brand X could be one of underrated Fusion groups.
Thank you for your recommendation. It may be a good while before fix the shipping issue and get my Miles box set...I was hoping to get it early this week but that did not work out
For 70 fusion, completely agree on beck and Zappa.. Blow by blow was produced by George Martin of Beatles fame. Also check out Zappa’s The Grand Wazoo, some people call it Hot Rats II.
Greetings! This is from the Black Man O.G. and music loving audiophile (My full title!🤣) Sir George Martin (as he was knighted), said his favorite record was The Paul Winter Consort LP titled Icarus, This record was reissued on different lables with different album covers. The one I recommend is Epic KE 31643. The other lables did not improve on the sound and the original Epic LP has the lyrics to the vocal tracks, drawn outlines of all 40 instruments and is a deluxe gatefold cover displaying all the instruments. The reissues I've came across are sing cover and have none of the aforementioned information. It is also a outstanding pressing for a large record lable and my favorite George Martin produced LP!
I saw Jeff Beck at Avery Fisher Hall in NYC when "Blow by Blow" came out...Beck put on a Master Guitar Clinic that evening!...Unfortunately, the headliner was John McLauglin's 2nd version of the Mahavishnu Orchestra with Jon Luc Ponty...That was extremely disappointing...Hot Rats! I wore the grooves off that album...Saw Zappa's son do the entire album a few years back...Sadly, no "Don "Sugarcane" Harris on violin...No Hot Rats!...These 3 bands need to be included into fusion, but were not considered jazz at that time...Santana, War, and Osibisa...Man, if these bands weren't fusing all different musical styles together, then what exactly were they doing?...All 3 of these bands had exceptional instrumentals to go along with their vocal recordings...I forgot about Michael Urbaniak with Ursula Dudziak... He was fairly popular back then...I'll just have to go down the fusion memory lane.
my miles set is absolutely fantastic - obv we already have most of one of the concerts but the others live up in terms of SQ. Especially the 64 show. sadly my LP set has misprinted spines where they've clearly copied and pasted from the first set (seems the QA these days don't bother to check such things)
Dude you've hit it on the head again, everything that you just showed their the only thing I don't still have is the Frank Zappa, I was never a big fan of Frank Zappa, but everything you showed the the Ponte the urbanek I have all of those I think I might have played half of them to death if you get a chance maybe you should go check out Sea Level they are not quite Jazz they are not quite Funk they are not quite Rock there's somewhere in the middle, you might like their stuff they are one of those groups from the late 70s where there was half black guys half white guys kind of like Little Feet, Sea Level was kind of different you might want to check them out!!!
Michał Urbaniak - Constellation in concert Zbigniew Namysłowski - Kuyaviak goes funky Frank Zappa - The Grand Wazoo, Waka Jawaka Most important Polish jazz album (not fusion): Krzysztof Komeda - Astigmatic Your 'Urbaniak' pronunciation is close to Polish, only 'i' is shorter ('ni' = soft n). Full Urszula's name is Urszula Dudziak.
i grew up loving prog rock then the present incarnation of a stepfather who thank god wasnt a dick turned me on to al dimeola . new level of cool technical , hybrid music.
Polish names are pretty problematic for us "westerners", but for the record, Michael Urbaniak is pronounced: "MEE-hal Oor-BAN-yak" .. and Urzsula Dudziak is pronounced: "Oor-shoola Dood-zhyak" .. .. Where the letter-combination "zh" in Urszula's name is pronounced like ""su" in the English words "leisure" and "pleasure": sort of a slurred, drunken-soundjng "z".
@@kennysaudiophilerecordreviews A pleasure, Kenny. Actually, once you get used to the "sounds" represented by those CLUNKY combinations of consonants, you discover that this spelling IS PHONETICALLY ACCURATE.. .. UNLIKE English!! 🤣😅😆
Hi, Im 64 and unlike the kiddiepools watching your channel I go for European jazz especially ECM, Japo and Soulnote. But I listen to american jazz too, can you feature these labels too?
Love a lot of the ECM stuff ... such an ethereal, atmospheric feel to it. Some of the albums are almost "New Age" ... but more of a cutting edge, experimental side. A lot of great American jazz artists seem to have gotten their start on ECM as well.
@@mbnyc5401 Japan is a welcome exception. Even the cheapest family restaurants are likely to be playing something by Bill Evans, Hancock, Shorter, or stuff from Brazil such as Nascimento, Ivan Lins, or Jobim.

Thank you for your recommendation. It may be a good while before fix the shipping issue and get my Miles box set...I was hoping to get it early this week but that did not work out
Cool!
Hot Rats is a classic and of course has the great Willie the Pimp by Beefheart!
If you get a chance, listen to Zappa's "Inca Roads" on the One Size Fits All album....an incredible composition
I am going to throw one jazz fusion album I like and it is titled “Elements” by Roger Glover.
Do you have any album by Dom Sugarcane Harris, Whois your opinion, thank you
He is great. Other than playing with Frank Zappa I do not have any of his albums.
Who dares to underrate hot rats ever?
(even my son loved peaches when he was just about 5 years young)
pay attention to the other musicians on the Urszula Dudziak, "Future Talk" album, cats like Kenny Kirkland, Marcus Miller and others.
my miles set is absolutely fantastic - obv we already have most of one of the concerts but the others live up in terms of SQ.
I appreciate the suggestion, thank you 😊 🙏
Kenny I like Blow By Blow better than Wired George Martin produced!
Michał Urbaniak - Constellation in concert
Zbigniew Namysłowski - Kuyaviak goes funky
Frank Zappa - The Grand Wazoo, Waka Jawaka
Most important Polish jazz album (not fusion): Krzysztof Komeda - Astigmatic
Your 'Urbaniak' pronunciation is close to Polish, only 'i' is shorter ('ni' = soft n).
Full Urszula's name is Urszula Dudziak.
i grew up loving prog rock then the present incarnation of a stepfather who thank god wasnt a dick turned me on to al dimeola . new level of cool technical , hybrid music.
Are you familiar with Ursula Dudziak from Poland?
Other than her "Future Talk" album that I presented in the video I only have moderate knowledge about her.
Polish names are pretty problematic for us "westerners", but for the record, Michael Urbaniak is pronounced:
"MEE-hal Oor-BAN-yak"
.. and Urzsula Dudziak is pronounced:
"Oor-shoola Dood-zhyak" ..
.. Where the letter-combination "zh" in Urszula's name is pronounced like ""su" in the English words "leisure" and "pleasure": sort of a slurred, drunken-soundjng "z".
Thank you very much 😊✌️
@@kennysaudiophilerecordreviews A pleasure, Kenny. Actually, once you get used to the "sounds" represented by those CLUNKY combinations of consonants, you discover that this spelling IS PHONETICALLY ACCURATE..
.. UNLIKE English!! 🤣😅😆
How's about Good God and their brilliant self-titled album. Not so much underrated as never rated!
Hi, Im 64 and unlike the kiddiepools watching your channel I go for European jazz especially ECM, Japo and Soulnote. But I listen to american jazz too, can you feature these labels too?
I don’t think kids these days are listening to jazz with the exception of students at Berklee and or juillard..
Love a lot of the ECM stuff ... such an ethereal, atmospheric feel to it. Some of the albums are almost "New Age" ... but more of a cutting edge, experimental side. A lot of great American jazz artists seem to have gotten their start on ECM as well.
Hey Boomer, I'm a spry 61. Sit down and let us kiddies man the turntable. 😜
@@mbnyc5401 Japan is a welcome exception. Even the cheapest family restaurants are likely to be playing something by Bill Evans, Hancock, Shorter, or stuff from Brazil such as Nascimento, Ivan Lins, or Jobim.
Yo, do you remember Idris Muhammad
Yes most definitely, great drummer 👍
Hey Kenny, great channel !Love it . Have you heard of the "jazz defenders" a U.K. group ?
Carrying on the hard-bop/soul jazz tradition inspired by blue note recordings.
They are excellent 👏
Salutations from Canada!
