    By rolex discontinuing the op41 they showed the flippers are now in charge.rolex had the opportunity to show they are still in charge if they would of tripled the production of it and drove down the value of that one basic watch but instead discontinued it and showed they are more than happy with what is going on in the gray market.

      No, you’ve got it upside down, Rolex are calling the shots not the flippers, this is their strategy. It was predictable they would cease production of this model. Rolex are increasing the value of their used watches and driving the hype which allows them to increase its new prices in turn. They are marketing geniuses.

      By increasing production of just that one watch would actually give reason on why their higher end models like gmts and subs sale on gray market for what they do.the flippers decided on the value of the turquoise dial's worth and to maintain that worth rolex was forced to discontinue it.so yeah the flippers were in charge of that decision.

    I tried to buy a Coral OP 41 at $15k and got the run around from flippers. They wouldn't even take that, the only legit offer was to buy it at $22k, which is almost 4x MSRP. That said, that watch is being asked for even more. I hadn't bought a Rolex before and just held off because none of them really appealed to me in the way that I said "Yeah I want that to be my first Rolex", but flippers have absolutely ruined the brand for me. I was willing to pay almost 3x for the watch but they want 4x. It's all just a game for them. So fuck the flippers and fuck Rolex for letting it get this bad. I was hyped to try to get one, but now I realize I'd be a dumb-ass for buying into all that BS. Do yourself a favor and spend your money with another company.

    You nailed it, the OP is easily their best watch for the exact reasons you mentioned, except for 1 thing:
    In 1925 Patek introduced, for the first time, a Perpetual Calendar movement on the wrist. Since then the word "perpetual" has ALWAYS been reserved for that complication NOT as a synonym for "Automatic" or "Self winding"... so why does Rolex continue to be the only watch company ever to use that word in that way? It's because the word "perpetual" is also accompanied with prestige and prowess and expertise. All things Rolex wants us to believe they have/are... even in their specs for movements they list "perpetual, self-winding movement"... if this wasn't a ploy to just sound more prestigious and fool the average Joe, why then the redundancy? It's disingenuous and an out right lie... in fact, contradicting themselves further, they use the exact same movements in the Cellini line but never the word Perpetual...
    Drop the word perpetual on their dials, and the Oyster, period (as it should be called), would in fact be a perfect watch and easily their best...

    • @Biriadan
      @Biriadan 2 роки тому +8

      Perpetual as in both "perpetually wound" because it winds itself and because the rotor can rotate perpetually. Other automatic winding mechanisms at the time had a limited range of motion for the rotor and you could feel a "thunk" on your wrist if it reached the end of it's range of motion.

    Think about it Rolex only really has three watch lines.
    The Oaster line and the Submariner line and Cellini. You can argue all the other ones are just added complications to either the Oyster or Submariner and most of time its just a change in the dial.

    The maxi markers work a lot better on the 41. I owned the 36mm and sold it because I loved the maxi 36mm case that almost resembled the cushion cases of the OPs inception, but they left the markers too small on the dial and from a distance they looked too stubby and squat

      @Thomas Wright ok dude.. we’re talking about luxury timepiece. namely Rolex. Some of the most influential people in the world, politicians, actors, sports icons etc wear Rolex. Rolex sponsors some of the most prestigious events in the world. Now if you want to say that the average man buys Rolex to celebrate a success and feel good about himself I’d accept that. Otherwise, just bugger off and stop making such generalized negative assumptions. You along with Marc are giving off a very ‘fox and sour grapes’ vibe.

    Discontinued? Hardly a surprise. Why? Because Rolex loves feeding the hype (just like Patek, AP, etc.). "We can't make more." Baloney. Of course they can. They can just make fewer of the less desirable models. They choose not to in order to feed the hype. It's borderline dishonest. Say no and take your business elsewhere. Rolex doesn't deserve it anymore.

    Guys, love the videos and podcast. Amazing work! However, we all know that Rolex took these ideas and improved them ... Hans Wilsdorf or Alfred Davis did not Invent them. The problem with pushing the notion rather than being first to capitalize on those inventions is that it is not properly educational. Lots of shade on Omega, hope you do a video on Omega's innovations, or Longines, et cetera. I know you know Rolex only found its recent success from going up-market through careful brand engineering, much like the birth of diamonds as the ONLY wedding ring that should be worn by DeBeers. Off my soapbox. Rolex is dead, Long live Rolex!
