- For TechDay I unbox the Mate 9. I had a dreadful time with my international review unit so I gave up and got the US market version instead. I didn't feel like messing with it anymore. Now I know my thoughts will change. Questions anyone?!

Looking forward to your review of the Mate 9. I'm particularly interested in the gaming performance of the Mate 9 and how the display performs outdoors. As I've heard that Huawei has done a excellent job with outdoor visibility on the display on their devices. Your experience charging the Mate 9, whether it gets hot or remains cool. How fast it charges.

No issues with the touchscreen on mine with the factory installed screen protector. This is one bought at Best Buy.The case was a nice gesture but you need to get another case. Phone is really fast. Great LCD screen. Camera is up there with the best. The fingerprint sensor is so fast you can question how secure it is..ha Quality build all around. The man that does durability test on here gives a 👍. Oh and this thing charges faaast.

Jedno Florestal I think it's more than a One Plus. Bigger screen if you like that One Plus 3T is very nice as well. Camera has more features as well on Mate. Dual cameras and may options. There is a reason for the $160 price difference. Also EMUI is quite nice. I am a Nexus user for years with stock Android and EMUI is refreshing with nice features that stock Android should have.
jonah travisano I think you will be ok if you keep the text normal size. Erica mentioned that. I can't tell you from personal experience. I don't read books normally..lol If you have a Best Buy close you can probably find one on display to check out. The one I went to had one.
Erica, great review. I've had my Mate 9 for a month and I love it. I had note 7, but it blew up (just kidding.) It's way faster and battery is incredible. My wife and daughter have the iPhone 7 plus and this puppy runs circles around it. Best kept secret. Don't think too many people will notice this beauty.

Trash Can I would. This is the only phone that's faster in most real world tests. I compared this to a Co-workers phone last night, and he's ready to switch to Android. He noticed I was watching a show and asked what I was using to watch it. I told him Kodi. He was unable to get the app. Lol. The only thing the iPhone 7 Plus did faster was opening up games. Nothing else.
Unpopular Popular Opinion can you install kodi 17 on the mate 9 with no problems?
I agree with you on darker colored phones. Those white bezels aren't so good for my eyes lol.

have had mine for 4 weeks. it's a great phone. battery life is fantastic, takes good pictures, and the phone is very responsive.

Purchased the phone from Amazon for $350. I love the phone. The phone is running on straighttalk Att sim. The majority of my phones have been Samsung's. My previous phone was a Note 5 for the past two years and I decided to look for something less expensive inorder for me to purchase outright. I only had the phone for approximately 1 month now with no real issues. The only feature I see that does not come with the Mate 9 is WIFI calling. Not a deal breaker but it is something I missed when using the Note 5.
Checked your channel and didn't see a follow up video for the mate 9. Did you use it for much longer?

I'm liking my Mate 9 thus far. No touchscreen issues here, Erica. I have the same firmware you have on your new one. For me, I actually like white phones (white Mate 9 here), but I like the darker metal on your black one - I would Frankenstein the two haha lol. The screen is a love/hate relationship for me. It's an excellent 1080p panel, but there are days I wish it was 1440p, esp. at almost 6 inches and "stereo" sound, 2k screen would have been nice when consuming media.
If you absolutely need a phone right now, get this one or the 3T. Otherwise, I would wait for S8/G6/U Ultra.

Trash Can it provides reassurance for when you knock your phone into a sink, or spill a liquid on your phone or get soaked in the rain whilst your phone is in your pocket. It's actually quiet a useful feature.
Hey Erica ! I've been using my Mate 9 (European MHA-L09 (yes, single-sim, thanks SFR...)) since Christmas and it has had touch sensitivity problems ever since, though they have gotten MUCH BETTER. There are NO unregistered taps anymore, but the problem now is that it's too sensitive : I can scroll pages with my finger about two millimeter above the display. Or with basically any metal object. It easily goes off in my pockets, and I have had it do dumb stuff when I just place it face-down on a table, believe it or not! :) Hope you'll review this, but y'know what, if you can manage to get your hands on the P10 when it comes out (or at MWC), I'd actually much prefer you cover that ;)
Man, I totally dislike this phone. It looks good, but the Huawei skin is a pain in the bum, it just holds back the device. I feel like I always have to look for workarounds. Keeping in mind that the Huawei-made Nexus 6P was cheaper at launch than this phone with more build-in memory, just makes this one a disappointing experience. I'm returning mine soon.

I've had the phone for two weeks and have done some tinkering and a little development (Huawei makes it difficult) I'm still on the fence on whether I wanna keep this or return it. I too have the touch issue, it's not a deal breaker but it's annoying. The camera in low light was worse than I expected. The speakers were actually better than I expected. The signal is also top notch as far as dBm's go. I own a Mi Max as well and the Mate 9 actually feels small compared to it. Great review, I agree with just about everything you said including the density which I always set to around 320 in the past. In developer options there is a "smallest width" option that you can raise to make everything smaller. The higher number you go (I use 500) the smaller everything becomes. I would use that over the View Mode option in Settings/Display.
I've found that I can't fast charge with anything other than the included cable. tried a bunch of different Anker quick charge cables, a few that came with Samsung phones, done with adapters ... they'll all charge but only the Huawei cable will quick charge, very weird. can't live without quick charge, and one cable simply isn't enough. can you shed some light on this?
3 left feet you need to use there charger and cable to get fast charge. Same with the Motorola phones where you need turbo charger and one plus where you need dash charger.
3 left feet huawei uses kirin chip with its quick charge standard and Qualcomm doesn't supports it, which your anker quick charge base on that standard. same thing goes with charging Qualcomm chip phone with huawei charger e.g. oneplus, non us version of s7 edge etc
the only way is to get the huawei fast charge, both 5v or 9v gives really fast charge

I went from a Note 7 to a Pixel XL which I loved however it died after 3 months (was covered by warranty and Google were great to deal with) however due to supply issues with the Pixel in Australia I've been made to wait 4 weeks for a new one. In the interim I bought a Mate 9 (Mocha colour dual SIM) to keep me going until the replacement Pixel arrives and to be honest I'll be selling the Pixel when it finally turns up and will be keeping the Huawei - to me it's just a better phone. It's snappier to use (no delay dramas with mine), battery life is awesome, it charges so much faster than the Pixel, screen resolution is perfect and it feels really nice and solid to hold. Only drama seems to be that after market cases are few and far between.
Nice phone. Too big for me though. 5.0-5.3" is a perfect screen size. I'm still rocking a LG G2 rooted with Cyanogen mod 6.0.1. Working great with great battery life! love your reviews....Very informative and up to date! Loved your DJI Mavic Pro video, you both looked cold out there! Keep up the good work!
Erica, I am a "poor Swiss Guy 😊. Believe me. But I like your analysis about technical stuff so much. My first choice is still Apple an iOS xy. BUT: I tried ever and ever Android mobile phones to be clear what's going on with new releases. I would absolutely buy the here described Mate 9 from Huaway. Better, faster, easier. Love this phone... Won one so I returned the one I had for axon 7 and some cash back for a possible one plus 3t ..Anyway I wonder what happened with your axon 7 review? Surely the best price to performance bang for buck to date.
I'm just wondering if #1 they will come out with a new one of these this year with a 4k UHD screen and #2 if AT&T will carry it. I had to give up my Note 7 and have HATED the S7 Edge and am looking for what I will replace it with in 4th qtr 2017 (not likely another Samsung, even though I've used their phones for years).
Erica, from my experience.. it only appears that you'll only need the brick from Huawei to enable fast charging. I've been using my LG V20 wire with the brick and it still has fast charging. Just saying...
Great video! I had the Pixel XL which was a lemon, nothing but problems and it finally died on me 2 weeks ago. Now have the LG V20 but it seems to lag and stutter way too much, some games become unplayable. Now I'm looking at the Mate 9 so I'm really looking forward to your follow up on the US version. Very curious on how it performs overall, does it lag or freeze up at all through normal navigation, in games, etc... can't wait to see your follow up video!
Absolutely LOVE my Mate 9! I've never use Huawei before but truly enjoying it. No problems with my screen with or without screen protector installed. The battery life is INSANE!
I've had my US version for about 4 weeks now and it's been almost flawless so far. I have the silver model with a Urban Armor Gear Case. Battery life and the fast charging is incredible. I haven't had the touch sensitivity issues that the International version has had. People have mistaken the display for qHD. It's a really nice 1080p display.
If you like the form factor and design, etc, probably feature for feature best phone for your money right now... except MWC in a few days? Wish List: I want a usable phone with massive power, battery life, great camera and killer display. Conflict: my business is based in a super sexy, and robust phone app, requires massive phone time, and I show it with a video... a lot. I want a huge display and a small phone... which is probably why I have "an imagination" to play with.

Huawei, if only you made phones with something closer to stock android like Oxygen OS. Hardware seems fantastic, but i just do not want to go to bloated, unoptimized, laggy, xposed incompatible versions of android again..
Phone to buy if you need one today. Maybe wait for G6 (I don't love LG but I'm liking what I'm seeing) especially for water resistance, audio and hand feel BUT higher price
This is objectively the best phone out there, Best, fastest, most efficient, SoC, no needlessly high res display, this has a way better pixel density than the 4.7" iPhone 7, nearly as much as the Plus and nobody bashes the iphone for it, let's stop this hypocrisy, the battery is absolutely huge, coupled with the efficient SoC and the 1080p display it lasts more than any other flagship on the market, I believe only the upcoming phones announced at the MWC will be able to match it and give it a run for it's money
Erica, great review. I'd love to see a follow up review of this model vs the Mate 9 Pro. I'm seriously looking to purchase the Pro version,but finding a USseller with it is a bit of a pain. So far, Amazon and eBay are the only ones I can find.
I've had my U.S. Mate 9 for a week and it's absolutely amazing. The battery life alone is unreal, and the camera is capable of taking some stunning photos. I will say that the touch sensitivity seems a little off; sometimes it doesn't recognize that I'm trying to get into the settings via the pulldown shade and I have to hit the settings icon twice. Everywhere else in the UI seems solid though, it's weird.
I'm a sucker for big phones though, and with my large man hands I have no problem handling it.
The UI experience such as things like having almost no notification and music controls from the lockscreen are what will be a make or break for people. So PLEASEEEEE review that.

If you're having trouble with touch sensitivity then try playing around with the touch-hold delay time settings in the accessibility menu. Also make sure you disable the draw screenshot or knuckle gestures. They're OK but a little too gimicky and get in the way of swiping smoothly sometimes because the phone thinks you're trying to draw a screenshot bubble or knuckle gesture. Otherwise this phone is a sexy beast. loving it.
Hm, I am actually considering an upgrade from HTC One (M7) to the Mate 9.
Should take into account the issues you had with the international model if I do end up getting that.
I care about gaming in phone a lot so please give a little detailed info on mate 9's graphics performance and how it compares to snapdragon 821 and exynos 8890 (if you have that variant of s7).
Erica I have a question I just got my Mate 9 international edition and there are a few weird issues I have with it such as the stock messenging app not being equipped to attach pictures, there not being a stock video chat feature option and Alexa missing which I kind of expected. Are these issues on the US edition? Have you experienced these issues? Can you do a video that explores the different options and features perhaps even with the screen recording option..Thanks.
What about the speed after a few weeks using it?
My P9 plus was the fastest phone I had last year, beating even the 6P.
Now that you have the Pixel would be great to have your opinion on if the Mate 9 can keep up with your daily use, or if it is just another awesome phone but slow AF like the S7
is there a reveiw of this phone? im in the market to up Huawei P9 mate or Asus Zenfone 3 Zoom but having a hard time choosing. as i use my phone for email,some socail media, text/phone call and web browsing for when i get lost in public transit. and battery life is a big plus for my usage as i will only charge the phone once and hope it will last the whole day or a good majority of it.
You do know that plug converters exist so you could have used your european original charger with your "old" mate 9... Those things cost like $3 on Amazon
Erica if you will please, in a comment or in the full review video can you give your thoughts on the kirin 960 soc use of the cortex A73 vs say Samsungs in-house exynos 8890 and there M1 cores? I am quite interested to know which of the "bigger" cores crunch faster for those odd AutoCAD or using say Linux for running some packages?

I've had the same touchscreen issue with my US Version that I've had for 1 month. Only issue but overall this is by far my favorite phone I've ever owned.
My Mocha Gold Mate 9 has replaced the Note 7 for me, and I love it. Before judging the battery life you might want to read the reviews of the Mate 8 and Mate 9 on GSM arena as they get into the details of the battery life and trade off with increased screen brightness on the Mate 9. Considering the increased brightness the battery life is pretty good! Rant over!

Huawei Mate 9 has became the most prestige android phone since Huawei has its own CPU and google service is absent in mainland china which is essential to Samsung and Sony's UI.

The s7 edge is mostly the ideal replacement for the Note 7, though despite the smaller screen and no s pen, but this mate 9 is really something, specially for it's big beautiful screen (not Amoled unfortunately) and the 4000 mah battery combined with a powerful processor, that'll attract gamers.
I'm so glad you understand scaling vs resolution. It's surprising how many people don't understand that or even the mere mention of DPI.

Hulu doesn't work out of the box. You have to call them and they need to change the streaming format to the phone. The preinstalled screen protector is also a fingerprint magnet.

I've had the phone for a week and it's pretty awesome. I had immediate buyer's remorse when I hit the order button. the next day when I got it from Amazon it was gone. Im glad I got it. it checks every box for me. it was worth the 600 bucks.

if the rumor of the galaxy s8 is going to be super expensive, or the g6 may cost $800, then I might well as go for the mate 9.
It seems we're on track to return to 7" phablets. I also don't understand the desire for bevel-less displays. It's an arbitrary metric at best, much as slimness was. I'd prefer to see a return to drop tests and battery life.
I own this. From day 1 in the USA. its phenominal. consistantly 2 days of battery and 8 hours of screen on time

why don't you manually update your phone from your computer. Download the firmware from their website and flash it on the phone (intl. model)

I love the white front. It's like a piece of paper that all your media is displayed on. Black seems to make things on the screen look smaller.
So I just bought one online I'd like to know how do you now when you've got the upgrade or not. What should I look for to tell if Ive got the one with the updated firmware?
Good review. I'd like to see it compared with an iPhone 7. Maybe speed test and/or your impressions on the os and ram management.
