They where fire. Even though people laugh at them they where just three American Irish that created a more mainstream form of gangsta rap that would get more air time because they didn't try to be gangsta they just spit fire and created some out there music far beyond its time. I didn't hear gangsta at first being from the UK some one gave me a mix tape with this on it and I was hooked 80s was a great time

I was a big metal head in the 80's and still am, but I can say without any delay (see what I did there?..) is that Beastie Boys are one of the MOST influential bands in rap and metal. Without them, we don't have Eminem, Rage Against the Machine, Linkin Park, Korn, Slipknot who went on to influence many more. They blurred the lines of punk, Rap/hip hop and metal, something that NO ONE was doing at that time. They were brilliant. There's a reason they're in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

Mix Master Mike was such a good DJ that he wasn't allowed at Scratch and DJ contests anymore because he would win each time. 😮 RIP MCA...that voice brings tears. I was 16 and we passed around music on cassette tapes. A friend's older brother had the best music and we would all make copies of his latest vinyl purchases using blank cassette tapes. First Beastie Boys album I had a copy of was Paul's Boutique.

  • @revgurley

This is just a taste of all that was The Beastie Boys. Notice how Mix Master Mike only used ONE album for all the scratches? ONE. That is the origin of hiphop. Getting creative with what you had. The entire License to Ill album is worth listening to. They are experts at story-telling, much like Slick Rick, but in their own flavor. While you could spend years digging into the Boys, may I suggest trying Prince? Not rap. But a master at his craft (RIP).
When I first heard The Beastie Boys, I was a cheerleader in middle school/jr. high. We had to ride the bus with the football team to away games. One guy had License to Ill, and I had my Walkman, so I asked if I could borrow it for the ride home? He agreed. I listened, and I was hooked. Bought the tape, wore out the tape, bought the CD. Keep in mind, this was the mid-80s. This song came out on a later album in the '90s. Got to see them live in '92 (Check Your Head tour), and they were amazing. You must hear "Paul Revere." At that concert, they started, "Now, here's a little story...." and tossed the mic into the audience. It was passed around as EVERYONE knew the words. They loved it, the fans loved it. A total blast of a concert! (RIP MCA, too).

Beastie Boys were it. In the 80's, they were Slick Rick storytelling and silliness mixed with the punk scene.

I was 11 yrs old when License to Ill came out in '86. It was one of my first TAPES!
I've been jamming out to these fools ever since.
You need to check out Paul Revere next. That beat will blow your mind.
Back in the day we knew every word to every song on License to Ill and would jam out to it every chance we got.
Love that you're digging on them too!

😂 Damn man! I saw them perform this track live with A Tribe Called Quest at the Cleveland Convocation Center. It was insane. The talent at that show... Q-Tip and his crew were on fire too but the B Boys burned it down and Mix Master Mike is absolutely for real. The whole stage was a big turn table so they all faced 100% of the audience 100% of the time. It was sick. I live that you're discovering them. Keep going brother.

I was 12 when Licensed To Ill came out in 1985 and my best friend and I were instantly hooked! I wore that cassette tape out that year and it was playing in my Walkman every time I was in the car so that I didn’t have to listen to what my parents played on the radio. I had a poster of the Boys in my room and I even took it to college with me and hung it up in my dorm room 6 years later because they were still kickin it root down 💯‼️

Enjoy this rabbit hole. It’s gonna be an amazing journey for you.

      @@halogram8013The other two:
I worked at an airport in College near The Woodlands Texas, and we received a lot of the bands… a roadie from Big Wreck gave me All Access passes for Buzzfest 98, and I got to watch The Foo Fighters play from side of stage in 98. I still have the pass signed by Dave Grohl.
Willie Nelson at his 4th of July picnic in the 2000’s.
      What are your top 3?
