    ***PLEASE NOTE*** In this video, I made the oversight of saying "women and girls," which excludes genderqueer and non-cisgendered individuals who experience menstruation. I really regret this most obvious oversight. While I know long work hours are not excuse, I want to extend my deepest apologies for the exclusivist verbiage. I've added an annotation to the video and edited the blog post. **Please "Thumb Up" this comment so people can see if when they view the video!**

      +Bite Size Vegan I'm a cis woman, but so appreciate the gender neutral edit!! I find menstrual products in general only advertise to cis women and it is off-putting for anyone not identifying in that way. All this to say, THANK YOU!! :)

      I don't get why you have to explain this. The whole topic is related to people who menstruate and this is mostly women and girls. Even those who might be transgender and associate themselves as women. We are just referring to a biological process of menstruation. What's the big deal not all biological women and biological girls menstruate either. Wouldn't you want to mention that too then. I think that like this is unnecessary.

    • @Vegan4Life
      @Vegan4Life 9 років тому +2

      +Satya I respect anyone who wants to be associated by any gender. but if you get offended by a pad add because you don't menstruate. Then how to people who menstruate going to know about a product? and if you get offended because you are refered to as a woman, even when biologically you one but emotionally you are not. Your physical body is of a woman. It's your personality and mind that is not. You don't want to be associated by a body then don't take anything personally. I think it's extreme if you get offended by a advert referring to a biological process.

    • @CamillaVikaHgemark
      @CamillaVikaHgemark 9 років тому +14

      +Satya I agree. Seems like a forced attempt at being overly political correct. It's a biological process that happens to people with uteruses, aka female reproductive organs. It's irrelevant whether you identify as a woman or not. It's still female reproductive organs... Why do people get offended by all these random things??? People have no chill nowadays...

    • @Vegan4Life

    My only regret is not switching to menstrual cups sooner. They're less of a hassle, good for the environment, save money, don't have to be changed as often as tampons, and they don't smell like tampons do.

    **Please share this video around**--I didn't realize going into this how very important this topic was! Women and girls need to know this information to make informed choices for their health and safety, and vegans (and non-vegans alike!) should know the cruelty they are supporting with their "feminine hygiene" purchases. Help spread the word!

      +Bite Size Vegan I've been using a menstrual cup for about a year now. It's also good to mention that you can't even feel it (like a tampon). A lot of women shy away from them because they look uncomfortable, and intimidating, but they're really not. Easy to use, and very comfortable.

      +Kathryn Mercier
      Unlike tampons which absorb fluid from the vagina, menstrual cups do not cause TSS and are not associated with any cases of toxic shock syndrome among users. Menstrual cups collect and do not absorb menstrual fluid, so it is highly unlikely that the use of menstrual cups will result in an increased risk of TSS.

    • @oceangingerbananas7071
      @oceangingerbananas7071 9 років тому +1

      +Kathryn Mercier No. But you must be hygienic while inserting, removing, and storing your cup. Wash your hands before/after insertion and removal, as well as, boil your cup for 5 minutes before and after your cycle, then store it in the cloth bag it comes with. If you're not hygienic then you could risk getting uti's or a bacterial infection in your vagina. The risk of getting said infections are low, but it's still a good practice.

    WOW what a great video!!! All the women in our family use washable cloth diaper inserts from Amazon. They wash up well, are super absorbent and dry fast. We try and line dry laundry as much as possible even on a clear cold winter day because the sun is a natural sanitizer. Being green living is part of being vegan for us. Which is why we avoid plastic as much as possible, and only use cloth napkins, dish towels, dish cloths etc. In fact I would love to see more UA-cam vegans talking about being more green, more minimalist lifestyle.

    Oddly enough, one of the reasons I chose to cloth diaper my son about a decade ago was because of the dioxin and environmental issues with disposable diapers. Which in turn lead me to alternative menstrual products because they contain the same chemicals! So I've been using a cup and/or cloth for 8+ years now. I'm saving money and the environment! :)

    I use a cup and a hearty stash of beautiful cloth pads. Join some fb groups and check out etsy for more options! I've never looked back since switching. But hey Emily, not only women and girls get periods!

    Hey, I love your content.
    This was an incredibly interesting video, obviously I don't have a vast experience with menstruation (being male) but I'm glad you've alerted me to these risks and the environmental consequences of these products. I don't think there's a lot of information available on the different products you mentioned. Could you do an in-depth guide to the various alternatives to tampons and pads, perhaps with an instructional guide to their use and structured with a list of pros/cons of each (if that's relevant). Much love, Veginner.

      Alan Michael Believe me, wearing pads feels like sitting in your own sweat and/or pee. Not pleasant.

    • @spinningdancer
      @spinningdancer 6 років тому

      Alan Michael not only does it feel like a wet diaper that often spills blood out the sides onto your pants or through the absorbant cotton pads but you have to change them rather frequently... What are you just supposed to toss your soaked pads in your lunch bag after a day out? Modern life makes this time of the month very very challenging. I used to use a DivaCup and loved it but now use a copper IUD for birth control and can no longer use it (believe me...I tried) I hate using pads but that's my only choice at the moment. Oh man...I'm due in a day or two...save meeeeee 😭

    I remember reading an article that went through the history of tampons, which covered many of the things you've mentioned (minus the animal testing information) and it was the first time hearing of Toxic Shock Syndrome. But the other points you brought up convinced me to finally take the dive to the reusable methods.
    Funny thing you mention say "a bit more intimacy with your own anatomy" because in the article I read they said that Americans prefer the method of plastic applicators while Europe prefers manual application. I wonder if diva cup sales are better in Europe over the states?

    I've not had my period in over a year thanks to breastfeeding. if and when it does come back I've been trying to figure out what I'm going to use. honestly I think I'm going to use cloth pads because the cuts that you can insert freak me out. yes pads are gross but no grosser than cloth diapers which I'm currently using for my daughter

      +Sasset Gingerelli I found the cloth pads to be more of a hassle than a cup, they take way more effort. I just switched to a cup and it is SO much easier. I thought it would be too gross and the thought of using a cup freaked me out too, but I am glad i tried it. It has totally made my cycle so much easier.

    Alternative menstrual products are awesome! There are some other alternatives, too: Reusable cloth tampons, sponge tampons (there are synthetic ones and actual sponge ones), and underwear with built in leak protection. I've used a cup for a long time now and cloth pads for a couple of years. They're honestly so wonderful and have more benefits than being vegan, safe, and better for the environment. I recommend everyone look into them.
    Also, for cups, make sure you get the right size! DON'T listen to the company and get it based on your child-bearing status. They just want you to buy from them and won't admit tat different brands work for different people. It's such BS and you're pretty likely to end up with the wrong size.

    I think anyone who prefers using tampons to pads should try menstrual cups. I have the Lena cup and it's one of the best purchases I've ever made. Definitely do research. I spent hours digging through reviews and comparing menstrual cups, and I'm really happy with my purchase. It's so much safer, and more environmentally friendly. The video was very informative. Thank you.

    Great video Emily, I loved it. Thank you for taking your time (a lot of your time) to explore how unhealthy tampons can be, as well as the history behind them. I appreciate your hard work, but I just wanna mention that not all people who have periods are women. I know periods have been associated with women for centuries, but I find it unsettling that trans people cannot relate to this video due to the term use. Of course I understand that you didn't do this on purpose (it's easy to forget), but next time, a more appropriate approach would be "people with periods". It would also help if you using politically correct terms since you are such a well known vegan, and it would help other vegans change their vocabulary too. I made a video addressing this topic, you should check it out to get an understanding how trans people are seen in the vegan community.

      +Queen Proserpina Thank you very much for this. I realized this in the 11th hour and so deeply regret making such an obvious oversight!! Especially because I know and love transgender and genderqueer individuals. I'm kicking myself harder than ever before for being so exclusivist in my verbiage and honestly have no idea how that slipped by me other than prolonged sleep depravation, which is still no excuse. I've added an annotation to the video, the description, and am editing the blog post as well. I realize that won't be seen by everyone watching the video, unfortunately, and it bothers me to no end that I can't go back and fix this. I'm baffles at my error, to be honest. Don't think I'll be able to let this one go. Many thanks for your comment and for voicing this very valid criticism. I'll certainly watch your video!

      Thank you Emily! Don't kick yourself too hard because it was an honest mistake, and no one is perfect. Hell, I'm trans and I make these kinds of mistakes all the time! We were raised in a society that ignored the existence of trans people, so it'll take some time to change our mind sets and our vocabulary. Thank you so much for taking more time and effort to change the video and blog post to be more inclusive

      +Queen Proserpina you're so welcome...I really can't think of how I possibly made this other than being so damn sleep deprived...still recovering from the "history of veganism" video and averaging 1-3hrs a night the last 3.5 weeks :P Can't even remember my name half of the time! but it's no excuse and I am so pissed. Especially when something that I'm most passionate about is the total inclusivity of veganism. Seriously!! major fail on my part. I watched the video and very much appreciate how non-confrontational but firm you are (ie not resorting to slurs or attacks yourself) while still being absolutely clear about the issue. (if that makes any sense). Also, you have a video on a topic I have slated to do this month (hopefully! things always get shuffled...) That being "can veganism cure mental illness?" Spoiler...ummm...nope. I'll check yours out for sure. ;D

    I like your snark. It sets you apart. If I was to be a vegan, it would likely be for environmental reasons over morality reasons. I personally use a menstrual cup because being able to sleep through the night without leaking and leaving no impact on the environment is an awesome bonus. I like using reusable pads for light days. There's a lot of studies showing that using tampons also increased the length of periods since they really only absorb fluid and make it harder to remove the actual lining. I actually wonder if that is half the issue with TSS is that in removing the fluid meant to lubricate the passage of the nutrient rich lining, leaving a lovely food for the bacteria.

    I've been toying with the idea of getting a menstrual cup for a while now but haven't though about it much recently due to my crazy cycle meaning I don't get them often, mostly for my own comfort as I feel like tampons add to my cramps. I'm definitely going to get a cup and some cloth pads too now probably within 2 cycles as I want to see how my cervix changes so I get the right one first

    this was so eye opening! Def need to get my hands on a menstrual cup, ive been planning it for a long time but kept forgetting (as i can only buy it online) and wasting money on tampax/o.b. shitty tampons! I bought a pack of organic ones last year but i've been put off by the 3x more expensive price:/ When i was 14-16 believe it or not i was brainwashed into believing pads were "safer" than tampons (and didnt steal your virginity hahahah), then i looked up all the ingredients and i remember i found out some nasty stuff about pads too (i can't recall exactly what i was, but i remember reading about a chemical that actually makes you bleed for longer!? i may be wrong though), ditched the pads and switched to tampons, which completely changed my period experience (not being able to exercise because you have a massive diaper in your pants was pretty depressing before). I feel like this topic is so important and it's sad that's still taboo to talk about publicly, i had my first period very late (14) but most of my friends were 9-11 years old only and got incredibly shocked when they found out haha! im not saying sexual education should be taught in primary school, but there's nothing promiscuos about this topic and i really dont get why 99% of parents are so embarassed to talk about it with their daughters before the time comes! My own parents gave me a old book to read (never read it but i laughed at the pictured) and did not say a word for example. Imagine if 14-16 year old girls were given a free menstrual cup in sexual education at high school, it'd be revolutionary! Anyways, thank you for the hard work!

    p.s. Is soda vegan?..... I've been hoping you would make a video on that. I try to do some research and I seem to get no where but you seem to track down all sorts of stuff!

      +Justice Jones I don't know if soda is vegan, but if you're talking about the carbonated drinks, don't drink anything carbonated at the same time you eat. Dr. Peter Glidden says even carbonated water will neutralize stomach acid and you won't digest any food you eat. If you drink carbonated stuff, always do it away from when you eat.

      Thanks! I work in a restaurant that serves almost nothing vegan, so when i get hungry or thirsty, I tend to drink soda (if I don't feel like something better like ice tea) but have always wondered if soda is even vegan and therefore no better than getting hot coco or something

    I love my diva cup and it literally saves me hundreds yearly compared to when I used to buy disposable menstrusl products. If anyone is low income, go reusable with your menstrual cycle! Reusable pads are easy to make (you can even make them from clothes you no longer care for) and menstrual cups may seem like a bigger purchase but they pay for themselves within a few months.

    we all have staphylococcus aureus in us, it's a normal microbe... It's only when that bacteria is given the proper circumstances it can become dangerous. It's a normal microbe all healthy individuals have in them already... Also TSS came about mostly because women were leaving tampons in for WEEKS....
    Further more all the ingredients to the agar you listed, those have to be used to do studies because certain bacteria and microbes grow better in certain environments, if they were to use something like an MSA it would be pointless because mannitol inhibits a lot of microbes because they cannot trive in that salty environment. We use this stuff in class all the time.

    I used the menstrual cup for the first time for my last period. It didn't spill once and I felt less dry throughout and altogether less shitty. The only advice I'd give is to make sure you get the small size if you haven't given birth because even the small one will seem a little big. That and make sure you know how to insert and take out properly, a really good youtube channel for this is Precious Star Pads, she reviews different menstrual cups and answers all the questions you could think of.

    • @BiteSizeVegan
      @BiteSizeVegan  9 років тому

      +SeaTheLion 🅥 nice! And totally agree. I love my Keeper :) thanks for sharing!

    • @Kknderbueno
      @Kknderbueno 9 років тому

      +SeaTheLion 🅥 If you've watched her videos you should know that giving birth is probably one of the most arbitrary traits and should not be used to choose a menstrual cup. Please don't lead people astray, because one bad experience can turn people away.
      The MAIN factor in choosing a cup should be cervix height. The second one should be the heaviness of your flow. There are a couple of other things like urethra sensitivity (for softness of cups). Plenty of people who haven't had children use the larger cups successfully and plenty of people who have had children still find smaller cups easier to use. If you have a low cervix and get a cup that's too large it is incredibly uncomfortable (since it slips outside of the vagina) and even painful since it rubs and pokes and knocks the cervix. If you get a shorter one with a high cervix it could get "lost" (not really possible, but incredibly hard to reach) which causes people to panic. Cervix height has nothing to do with childbirth.

    • @SeaTheLion
      @SeaTheLion 9 років тому

      Yes, sorry, I was mainly referring to what they say on the website for my cup which asks you to consider the larger cup if you have given birth. But you're absolutely right, precious star pads talks more about the cervix.

    • @Kknderbueno
      @Kknderbueno 9 років тому +1

      SeaTheLion 🅥 That's actually one of the things that makes me most angry about cup companies. Cups are expensive and I feel like they're getting people to buy ones that won't work for them. I spent $40 on the Diva when I first started using cups. It was the "right size," but it was painful and leaked all the time. It even fell out a couple of times (not usually possible, but if you have a low cervix and long cup, your cervix gets shoved upwards and slowly pushes the cup out). I went back to tampons because I thought that "menstrual cups weren't for me." It wasn't until a couple of years later that I found out the truth and used a different cup.
      Many people have one shot to get a cup right, because of how expensive they are. I know too many people who used the wrong cup size, because of the company's measuring system, and went back to tampons.

    Haven't watched the full vid but tss was caused originally was beacause of over sized tampons, you can still get it if you don't change it(we're talking days not hours.) Always is a pretty good one
