  • The first part of the 2020 St Mary's Trophy at Goodwood SpeedWeek presented by Mastercard was an awesome battle filled with the legends of the BTCC, Le Mans, WRC and more. The main battle at the head of the field was headlined by a pair of Ford Galaxies, driven by BTCC star Sam Tordoff and WRC champion Stig Blomqvist. Behind them were Cortinas (Andrew Jordan) Minis (Alex Brundle) and more fighting very hard. #gwspeedweek

Remember, America Stock-car, (Nascar) tracks were flat tight tracks somewhat similar to this. So the 1960-1966 Galaxies, Fairlanes were accustomed to these conditions, it was only a few years later with the "Super-speedways" when the tracks got very wide, high banked turns, very long with sweeping turns, it changed everything.

It is an absolute miracle that Studebaker makes enough horsepower to be so competitive. Apparently it's only 268 cubic inches and the heads have intake valves that are only 1.87 inches !! The EXHAUST valve on those Ford 427s is 1.66 which I might add is also small for 427 cubic inches. The Studebaker engine stock at it's best was 195 hp. It would seem a miracle for even a highly modified engine to be over 325 and that hardly seems enough to pass a 427 Ford engine.

Not only that, the Galaxie stock suspension in 65' was changed entirely, and as such, way better.

I agree. The camera work was great, but I would have have wanted to see more of the rest of the field.

Heartbreak??? I didn't see anything that I would consider heartbreak, just a good tight race. Guess you Brits have another meaning for it. Lol

The leader blowing up 3 minutes to go isn't a heartbreak?

@@barndawg77 Guess it's just a matter of semantics. If he passed him just before the finish line, then that would be considered a heartbreak. Getting overtaken with 3 whole minutes left in the race, might be sad, but certainly not a heartbreak. It's just good racing.

@@EleanorPeterson I understand now - thanks for the clarification. I love the British racing of that time because they had such a variety of vehicle types - huge sedans like the Galaxie battling little Minis and Alfas, with a few Jaguar sedans thrown in. We never saw that extent of variety in the U.S. in one race, other than Historic Races. I think it's very cool to watch. How come you never see Chevy Impalas in these races? I'm a Ford fan so I didn't miss them!

@@barndawg77 My guess is that Ford has had a bigger presence in the UK than GM or Chrysler, but that's just a guess. Love too, watching those Lotus Cortinas fly around the track on 3 wheels in the corners - particularly with the late, great, Jim Clark at the wheel. He felt what his machine was doing every second and was able to translate those feelings into racing on the edge at all times.
