That was exactly what all motor racing should be about - roaring engines, lot of overtaking, poweslides and also a few crashes :) They should be showing this on the telly instead of Formula 1.
My goodness. Future generation are really going to miss out on something special when petroleum inevitably runs dry. I really enjoy this raw, hands-on footage. Props to your camera man on the sides, too.
Jeston Aylen nah, there'll still be that for this. Neil is good, true) The only better option is a second Neil. There should probably be a kickstarter campaign to clone him, or maybe just find one more camera man.
J0lker that's right, it's not gonna run out in foreseeable future, but the prices will steadily climb, unless a new saudi arabia is discovered every 10 years.
zloychechen5150 I guarantie you at the some point in the quiet near future we will establish ways of synthesizing "fossil" fuels. We can actually do it now, but prices are way to high (and the oil industry not really interested) Liquid fuels are just a great way of storing energy
I think this was one of best videos in long time. Raw sound, enough of onboard videos, good comments and I really loved Tiff appearance. What a fantastic day it must have been and being 2nd with those people around you - priceless. Im more envy on your days like this than when you are testing.
Just "wow".. First of all, what a relief - after so many "silly" tail drifts in reviews, watching a great drive! Second (to none) - these 20mins are worth of weekend of racing emotions! Brilliant work (as ever) by Neil Carey.. Thank you for sharing your love for cars!
Chris Ward has a beautiful, fluid driving style. The way he carries speed through the chicane is unbelievable (and the two wheels on the grass during overtaking quite ballsy.)
Lovely video and very clean driving... no time for drifting out there ! Well done for the final result, it was a pleasure to watch. Nice choice for music too.I love your "extraordinary human being" at the end of it ! Thanks for this !
My very first car was a 414 GSI Rover, and i absolutely loved it! Good looking car, confortable, lots of space to drive my friends in it, 101 BHP that were more than enough to go fast when i wanted to, and i never had any mechanical problem within the 5 years i had it.
Trust Chris Harris to make a Rover V8 absolutely desirable. What an amazing piece of automotive journalistic art. I'm on an isolated Island in Northern Western Australia it took 2 hours to load this and it was completely worth it.
wortheffort seriously though, neil is a mad man with video editing. so well covered, felt like I as there. Coupled with Chris harris' passion for cars, and driving abilities these guys are the best.
This is just so very good. Although I love the wonderful footage of so many legendary cars and (as always) Chris' commentary, the long, uninterrupted stretches of race footage were the standouts. Couldn't tear my eyes away.
Chris Harris on Cars This and the previous Goodwood clip are hands down some of the best car-related material I've ever seen. Also really liked your Ford Falcon race at Spa and the Lister Jaguar video from the Revival, back when you worked for "that other channel".
Holy cow, that was awesome!! Lovely shots that gave a great sense of the speed and skill, and what a sound! Incredible to watch, please more of this =D
This was amazing. Brilliant driving and videography. And having my two favorite automotive journalists in the frame at once was the icing on the cake. I hope to see more work with the two of you in the future.
***** I'll make an assumption you are talking about the Camaro... In the 70s at least a few Trans-Am teams wanted to swap the SLA with the IRS from the C2 Corvette. The C3 was too narrow I guess. But Cambered controlled Swing axles would be easily to parlay. But the Race judges disallowed it. Stupid move really. Anyway, I could see you doing that.
***** You would not need to do that. Just look up C2 Corvette rear suspension. The Jaguar E-type looks roughly the same but is much less robust and has inboard brakes. When I said "swing axle" you might have pictures the VW Beetle (I don't know the year VW finally fixed that) or pre-1968 Chevy Corvair. Trust me when you actually look at this stuff you will understand , and a C2 rear end swap will be just fine.
***** I would also be a matter of what actually fits. I can see a lot of rebuilding and modifications. and since you can built the C2 IRS from mod parts its not really a matter of what you can find. Also the moment you need to do any brake work you ware going to hate that Jaguar XJ rear end. Its the major reason why no one uses inboard brakes anymore. It's also not period or manufacture correct nor does it look at all as durable.. That said, its not MY money. You do what you want, just make sure you actually want to do it and want it done. Again do some searches and actually look first before going with the European thing because its European. The GM suspension is better for your GM. That's all. Anymore and it'll just get to be an ugly argument for nothing.
***** Honestly there isn't really a difference in the actual car. I have a '79 and it is a wonderful car. The nice thing about the face-lifted ones is that they are much cheaper for basically the same car.
17:30 the way Chris looks out of shot you can just tell Tiff was being a nuisance in the way that only Tiff can. And then the way he wanders off muttering ‘I wish I had a miss fire’. Legend
Top fun and very impressive. Remember that many of these drivers and vehicles were the very pinnacle in their day, have mad skills, making the result even more impressive. Thank you for sharing.
I don't know what is more impressive... Your 2nd place in a Rover, that little Mini, or the fact that the fastest car out there was a 70's Camaro! LOL. It looked like a blast. Congrats.
Second gen camaros especially later ones had amazing suspensions it was really an opposite to the cars 15-20 years before it. Shitty engine good handling. In contrast to the monsters of the 60’s all motor no suspension. You can bet your ass he isn’t running a single oem part in that engine though.
What a FANTATSTIC video! Epic racing by some amazing cars, by some amazing drivers. Loved every second of it. A very well done on a well earned and deserved 2nd place. Thanks you Chris, Chris and Neil!
Just think we should should all say a big thanks to Chris, Neil, all the people involved...watt a great bit of entertainment. That v8 rover wow !! My grandad use to be a police driving instructor using those if my memory serves me. Keep bringing the awesome work big fan.
Excellent film as always, thank you. Just the best era of touring/saloon cars, mix of more power than grip - wonderful synchronised sliding at 5:15. The engine noise is all the commentary needed.
Wish I still had any of my old SD1’s, especially the VDP EFi with its manual conversion.
I clicked on the video before going to sleep, then marked to watch later but started to watch and couldn't stop. Amazing footage, visceral. Great driving of both Chris,
This has to be one of the most enjoyable video's mister Harris has ever made! it's pure joy seeing all these old cars sliding and their drivers fighting at the wheel. it shows how clinical racing has become over the years, even touring cars. nevertheless an absolute terrific job and huge thumbs up to everyone who made this video possible, keep up the good work! greets from Holland
Thank you for bringing us this amazing atmosphere and congratulations on the 2nd place! I've been following your work since the evo magazine days and man, you'll become a full-fledged race car driver if you carry on like this
Oh crap, this video made me realize that I am now old enough to say "Reminded me of being a young lad in the early 80's spending every weekend possible hanging out on the banks of Thruxton dreaming of one day being a racing driver. Racing today just isn't as good as it was in my day." And the path to old age is almost complete. Great video, thanks Chris and your team.
stoppsi Yeah, that number 10! I hope Chris had "words" with the driver afterwards. If there is one thing that really improves a race, it is a bit of a scuffle in the pit lane!
Brilliant video guys - so many great camera angles and really well stitched together. Great racing too. Thank you! Great to see Needles at the end too, what a legend.
Another brilliant video Chris, Goodwood is such a good venue for making these type of videos and your ability to get a drive in a competitive car has to be the icing on the cake. Your drive in the Lister is still my favorite, but this one is right up there with it and I hope that Chris Ward gets a few more fans from his epic drive on your channel. Hopefully we will see some more racing from Goodwood now you are part of their team. As ever none of this happens without Neil so as usual "I take my hat off to you sir."
Brilliant video once again, thank you Chris & Neil and the rest of the people involved. The last Goodwood video you did a couple of years ago is up there as one of my favourites on youtube. The noise off that grid was immense!!
I absolutely loved this Chris! Huge grin for the entire race and that Rover V8 sounded beautiful. Such a shame Rover went to crap. A fantastic effort from you both - especially considering you were up against Matt Neal and Tiff! As for the TopGear Question... I think that should have been "When are WE replacing Jeremey ;)"
Rover went to crap after dumping out that Buick motor. The 215 is a rare thing here in the USA because it’s dwarfed by other v8s of the time and cars got bigger after it was made but I love how Britain took and expanded on the engine. They really made it breathe as soon as they had their hands on it. Good breathing is a thing all Buick motors struggle with. I should know.
@@theeoddments960 In the early 90s Rover were developing a KV8 to replace it but it just didn't produce enough torque. They lopped off two cylinders though - hence why the KV6 had a 90-degree vee.
Wicked Chris and Neil, totally wicked..! Thanks a lot, this is great stuff, proper car culture thing. We thank you for the quality you're offering us, and we envy you a bit that kind of live experience ;) Cheers
Chris' videos really come alive with his 'journeys'. The car reviews are ok but it's the journeys and adventures that he does that really help bring the viewer along....
congratulations on your P2 - great drive from both of you! Very nice to see those different car's dicing, not to mention racing with cars that actually slide and go fast at the same time is soooo much more fun towatch than it is now with the super grippy tires and super stiff suspensions. Good stuff!
Hahaha fantastic! Rovers not very common here in Australia, but I loved my SD1! Had the 4.4 block from the Aussie leyland P76 with the 3.5 heads, 3" exhaust running LPG only with gas research throttle body. Sounded bloody great, went like the clappers and surprised the hell out of (beat) a lot of commodores and falcons! Love Harris's work!
Everything racing should be. Street cars stripped and equipped for racing. No crazy aero (Chin spoiler and deck spoiler or small wing), no monstrous engine upgrades, rather permissive as to what cars are allowed (Mini coopers Vs Camaros vs FB RX-7s Vs Ford Capris vs et al), drifting as natural and necessary technique to get around faster... This is what I picture as real Trans-Am being, with more American cars and newer cars naturally. But still. THIS IS WHAT AMERICA NEEDS. Not a mildly tweaked NASCAR, or Indycars that look like insane collections of shaving razors. Car people can buy from the local dealer, that you or you friend/neighbor/rival may be driving, out actually racing. Oh! BTW, Subscribed!
Great racing, watching that SD1 slide through the corners i quite a sight. My old man and 3 or 4 of those Rover V8's through the years, so great nostalgia for myself. All good.
I don't ever comment on youtube videos but this one woke somethign in me. Something visceral.. The sound of that camaro. Oh gosh! This video was sweet. Great work Chris
Great viewing...got the heart pumping. Nearly as good as doing it. Really interesting watching both driving styles/lines......nearly fell off the sofa 3 times going for the apex!!
Tiff's cameo was the cherry on top of a brilliant video.
Tiff AND Chris harris in the same video = gold
Jonka Olofsson They would make a good top gear replacement combo. Some genuine car geeks.
Bob Mul Catchpole is a shoo-in.
Bob Mul Chris was a guest on one of the episodes of the latest series of Fifth Gear
Mr Needle is more than a car geek, a professional race driver
Chris Harris and Tiff Needell. Same video. Same race.
Internet broken. Automotive journalism complete. Go home everybody.
***** Tiff is awesome.
"I wish I had a misfire" tiff is the king of racing driver excuses haha the man is awesome
Chris Harris appeared on a recent episode of fifth gear with tiff
Pat Mccarron I missed that, must find it.
***** So true bro, lol
I was glued to this the entire race, marvelous piece of video. Motorsport is just what a man needs right??

More more more of these. Best vids you guys have put up. Love to watch these classics battle it out. Great driving...obviously.
Chris Ward has a beautiful, fluid driving style. The way he carries speed through the chicane is unbelievable (and the two wheels on the grass during overtaking quite ballsy.)
Looks like he's completely overdriving it to me ... making a huge deal out of overtaking back markers ... and driving onto the grass was idiotic.
@@3storiesUp bullshit. these older cars always tend to be at their fastest with a bit of slip, ward drove it beautifully
Grass . . . . the OTHER track surface!
Genuinely put a smile on my face! Especially the bit of banter with Tiffany at the end.

Well done for the final result, it was a pleasure to watch.
Nice choice for music too.I love your "extraordinary human being" at the end of it !

Chris Ward is so good, such a relaxed style, like he was half asleep on that car, so fluid, great episode!
For the first time in my life, I want to buy a rover.
it's never too late...
Mumbo Jumbo this is a very different kind of video compared to where I would expect to see you.
Me too never thought id say that. But has to be V8 SDI
Rover made some utterly brilliant cars.
Shame they're overshadowed by the rubbish they also pumped out every now and then.

Absolutely brilliant stuff Neil and Chris. A part of my soul yearns to have lived in this era just to be at these types of races
