    The essence of figure skating is speed and accuracy of jumps. Yuna Kim She constantly reminded me of the essence of this sport and presented a vision to a new level. Like Comaneci's 10-point score, her performance in Vancouver will forever remain legendary as an example of perfection. In the IOC's official history book, Vancouver's performance has already been recorded as being evaluated as that of Usain Bolt.

    Michelle Kwan was the greatest of all time. From Skate America in 1995 to Worlds in 2004, she didn’t place lower than third in any competition. Five World titles, nine national titles, and more 6.0 than any single skater in history. Two Olympic medals, and I’m sorry but Tara Lipinski flutzed her way to Olympic gold, had mediocre technique and if there had been replay and review back then, and had Kwan skated after her in the Olympic Long Program in 1998, Kwan would’ve beaten her on the artistry mark, hands down. Oksana same issue 1994. She two-footed two of her jumps in the long program, and while her artistry was better than Kerrigan, she wasn’t better that night. Yuna Kim, very talented skater. No flaws, and I agree she deserves to be up there on the list.

      This analysis is spot on. I still cannot believe the judges awarded lipinski over michelle that night. Tara was not better, her artistry was like a child, michelle looked like a heavenly angel. If michelle had skated last, totally different result. The sport of figure skating lost its luster for me, that night when they put michelle 2nd, tara never had artistry, but somehow she's getting 5.9, over michelle. Michelle had every right to continue to fight for gold. She held up the sport when no one else could. Tara left because she knew she would never be able to compete for four more years against Michelle.

    It’s tough to compare skaters from different eras, when the requirements were so different. The earliest skaters were judged 60% on compulsory figures and 40% on free skating. Later, a short program worth 20% was added, figures reduced to 30%, and the free skate to 50%. After 2002, the 6.0 judging system was scrapped in favor of the current code of points. All these changes have resulted in very different champions over the years.

    • @theastewart6721
      @theastewart6721 2 роки тому +12

      I agree 100%. When Peggy Fleming won, the compulsory figures were mandatory and she nailed them. Look at Scott Hamilton’s footwork. He had to do all the compulsory figures. His footwork is amazing! I wish they never took them out. Oh well. Things change. I think they put way too much emphasis on jumps. It need s to be the whole package.

      @@auapplemac1976 I guess we will never really know that because Sonia was born in a completely different time period. When she became a world class figure skater, even completing a single loop was considered a big deal. Truth is I think in some ways, they have gone way overboard with the big jumps, it’s not just skaters who were popular 60, and 70 years ago. Even skaters in the 90’s like Michelle Kwan, and Tara Lipinski didn’t do the quads, or hardly ever did the triple axels,and even most guys didn’t start doing them up until about 30 years ago. I think the really big jumps almost takes away from the beauty and grace of the sport and almost makes figure skating look more like gymnastics on ice. Just not impressed.

    I wouldn't agree that simply having the most medals makes one the 'best' figure skater. Skating is a sport of beauty and grace, not merely winning medals. And, as well, the ability to connect with the audience, someone who is remembered as loved by the audience over a long period of time, aside from simply performing and winning medals.
    That said, I would have placed Michelle Kwan FAR higher as she skated for many more years than several of the other skaters and was recognized for her beautiful artistry. Her performance at the World Championships that won her her first World's medal is artistry incarnate.
    Lists of "The Best" are often arbitrary. Why not ask the top skaters who THEY thought were the Top Ten? They are, after all, the 'experts.'
