Watch how she takes her time in the beginning to set the MOOD for the performance. Very unique to her!

I personally pay little attention to fancy jumps. How the skater makes me feel with the music and her grace is how I judge. My favorite performance of all time was “Fields of Gold” by Michelle Kwan. She never won gold but in my opinion is as every bit as good if not better than many who got the gold.
@@toniroberts8117 So true!
She was my favourite. A true artist. The beauty doesn't lie in her ability to jump but in her artistic expression. Long live Oksana Baiul!
💯💯
And she was only 16 years old when she performed this. Such a natural performer
She was 18 here.
We need to bring artistry and footwork back into figure skating NOW
I don't think that's any possible now since the ladies from russia, specifically Tutberidze's team, already turned it into a battle of who can do more difficult jumps and ofc quads, focusing on the technical side of the sport while utterly lacking in artistry. That's so obvious when Sotnikova & Zagitova won the Olympics over the uber artistic Yuna Kim & Evgenia Medvedeva. No more art on the ice.
@@iamayanakuzunoha430 Ice skating also used to be about perfection and technical ability. If a skater so much as stumbled there would be a loud gasp from the audience and if they fell it meant a loss. I'm watching these guys stumble and even fall and just because of the difficulty of the jumps they do, or attempt, it's not a very big deal. It's very annoying to me
@@iamayanakuzunoha430 Sotnikova was technically inferior to Yuna. It was Putin that gave Sotnikova gold. Yuna's techniques were incomparable to Sotnikova.
@@iamayanakuzunoha430 I am not into figure skating but the duo of Kamila Valieva and AnnaShcherbakova is just pure joy. They both have artistic , ballet backgrounds and it shows.
I love Oksana en you
No one is and will never be as great and artistic as Oksana Baiul was, she is IRREPLACEABLE Wow! Her artistry is superior. Loved Oksana , she was absolutely magnificent on the ice. Loved her!!! There will never be another Oksana, no way. She was magnificent on the ice. Bravo bravo 👏 👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍🙌🙌🙌🙌😍😍🥰🥰♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
I don't know, Katerina Witt doing Carmen is still the best in my opinion.
I was in the audience for this and I'll never forget it.
I'll bet!! 😃
D D , how lucky you are!
Incredible!! Lucky you
You're lucky to see this beautiful art before your very eyes
Wow
2:58-3:02 Can we just talk about how she moonwalked on ICE?
Yujin Yi
Yes. Let's talk about it while we watch it again.
RIGHT?! My thoughts exactly!!! •0•
Yujin Yi moonwalk easier done on ice than on ground
Moonwalk is easier on ice. The less friction the better. It would also work on a waxed wooden stage with smooth soles shoes.

Oksana was brilliant! She made skating with a face mask popular 25 years before COVID!!
Thanks for the laugh 😂
:-)
😁
Yeah
👍😀
Oksana is simply hovering over the ice to the shivering sound of the Armenian duduk. Thank you for your powerful performance!
Oksana is so much more than other competitive ice skaters. She was a true dancer, performer and ARTIST. To see this level of artistry in ice skating is breathtaking. With Oksana's raw talent as a dancer and skater combined with Galinas artistic depth and talents, this duo was unstoppable. This is why Oksana is my favorite skater of all time. This performance is the epitome of art! A performance that generates an emotional response and transports the audience somewhere else. To me, this is what it's all about. Brilliant
She has such command and drama, she really does. Her programs at their best transport you AND contain innovative, complex choreography.
Could not have put it better. The mystique!
She was possessed in this routine. Mesmerizing!!!!
It's "I COULDN'T care less," not "I COULD care less."
Drea C. Oh my god. She's amazing!! Even better than her olympic program. She nailed it..
I miss the days when skating was graceful, ballet inspired and artistic instead of just jumping. Mesmerizing to watch this.
Sylvi Bahr This was a professional competition, not an amateur/Olympic-track one. They were allowed to have more fun and be more creative/posey. Serious competitions were always focused on athleticism as well as artistry, as well they should.
Sweet Moon That is not a proper noun; it's just artistry. Of course Oksana's artistry was amazing but even she would never have skated this in an "amateur" competition. It was still very much focused on the program elements and jumping, again, as it should be. But these ones can be more fun to watch.
Love love love her performance in this tournament~
Artistry is hard to objectively score...maybe thats why athletes focus more on pointable routines. More on the safe side I guess.
I couldn't agree more
She was the first skater I saw that really made an impact on me. I loved her style, her artistry and she was a perfectionist on ice.
The golden days of ice skating when artistry still mattered. It’s disappointing that it’s more about the jumps now. It’s not as interesting to watch.
Olympic skating is the sport side of skating. Its fine as it is. It is about how high and well a skater executes & masters complex jumps, spins, spirals and all the elements. How fast they skate and all the things that go into making skating an athletic sport. I like that they are measuring & grading for flexibility, precision, speed, power, edge control, body control, great balance & endurance etc. Go see a pro skating show or a skating exhibition if you want to see the artistry and show biz side of the sport. I happen to love the Olympic sport with its unpredictability and the pressure of competition. Every athlete has a personality that reveals itself whenever she/he competes. I like competition. I can also enjoy a good showbiz performance too, where skaters reveal their creativity & personalities as entertainers.
I can't believe it, but I was about to say also that those were the golden days of skating!!! Brian, Kristi, Michelle, Victor, Oksana...
@@ctruth6185 ya but why can't it he both...I'll never get that honestly...like I don't see why a performance can't be highly technical/every bit as much in focus in terms of the skill and precision and etc so on and so forth aspects of competition with the rigidness of that structure, while still also allowing for and incorporating more of the creative/ artistic experience and the expressing of originality and personality of the athlete to a more tolerated degree... like I don't see how room for those creative elements would do anything to SUBTRACT from the technical qualities which are being judged in the highest levels of competition
Couldn’t agree more. . She was so artistic powerful and unbelievable to watch !! None performs on these days like her !! Timeless to watch !!
@@ctruth6185 I don't think you watched the '94 Olympics then. Oksana beat Nancy K for the gold solely because of Oksana's artistic interpretation. Nancy had all her spins and jumps to perfection but performed so bland "like a robot". Oksana is just in a league of her own, like no other.
If she performed this act this year, she'd be accused of cultural appropriation instead of appreciated for her pure talent, skill and artistry.
It's Britney Bisch Nope. This is appreciation. They acknowledged the origin.
Ever heard of Belly Dancers?
True. Pop culture today is pretty fucked up. The bleeding heart liberal thought police would arrest her and publicly humiliate her.
Kitty White, appropriation of belly dancers? I don’t see how that would be. I don’t see any belly dancers doing this.

what a beautiful contrast.
💕💕💕💕
AGREED DARLIN 100% 😎🤘🇨🇦❤
Nights are not always cold. In fact, ice skating is not a genuine ukrainian sport. Baiul's success was an exception.
This is armenian music not arabic, the instrument is the duduk 🙄
I love this style of skating but the new rules have squashed creativity. From dancing on the Ice surface itself to props and a costume that represents the music but wouldn’t be allowed by today’s standards. I love this. Bring all this back!
Because God dorbid someone breaks a leg or sue, or you show creativity and you get accused of not being politically correct. It’s about about suing or money in this shitty world.
This is NOT Olympic Eligible skating. It cannot be compared to today's skating because this level doesn't exist any longer. These skaters are past their prime usually the technical requirements are much lower, maybe 3 jumps at most & artistic expression is highly encouraged. I encourage you to look up Kurt Browning skating to brick House
This is pro skating. Different rules to Olympic (amateur) skating

Wow that's so true. (I didn't think about the mask thing-pre Covid days) but that was a good catch. I agree with you.
Me!
are you kidding me!? that was beyond brilliant
Hii
Of course it is. This is the second time I’ve watched this and I was a toddler at the time. I’ve never seen anybody combine figure skating with traditional belly dancing. It was unbelievable. All those movements, gestures, and ice point dancing is very difficult stuff to do, even for an Olympic level skater. So beautiful and authentic. I’m surprised I didn’t see this as a kid.
It’s moments like this where you realize this is why Nancy lost. Bauil’s influence as a skater is unrivaled and she will leave a mark greater than Nancy ever could hope to.
James Frew
The only things that come to mind about Nancy is her whining "why, why?" and stealing her married coach. Princess.
So very, very true!
I agree, Nancy was way overrated and so mechanical. She brought nothing to the table.
Oksana influenced Michelle Kwan who in turn inspired Yuna Kim.
@@2degucitas In 1996 Kerrigan married her *agent*, Jerry Solomon, not her coach. She was never involved with
Evy Scotvold, who with his wife Mary were her coaches, including during her professional skating career after her marriage to Solomon.
I've got chills up and down my spine; I need to watch it again. Sometimes the plethora of quads, triple axels and huge jumps of today don't compare to such artistry and style of then. She put us in just the right mood with that perfect music. Perfection.
🥰
So seamless...not ballet, not figure skating, but true ballet on ice.
Yes, love it 💖
Oksana really showed how beautiful figure skating is. Besides from the crazy jumps and spins, it has artistry and beauty
There will never be another Oksana Baiul. She is a magnetic performer... you just can't take your eyes off her out of fear you'll miss something. She was a very unique and impressive skater. I wish she had stayed focused on her career as a skater, lord knows how far she could have gone. I watched her in 1994 in Lillehammer and I knew she was going to win that Gold Medal. In spite of the Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding fiasco, she managed to snatch that Gold right away from Kerrigan's hands who thought she was so good no one could beat her. But this sweet little earned her gold medal that day. How time flies though...she's a grown woman now.
She was always one of my favorite skaters from back in the day. She was always so unique and mesmerizing
I have never seen something like this, it is incredible, it is unique, I will give it replay.
I remember watching this live and thinking she had transcended the artistry of the sport to a new level with this program.
This is probably the best artistic program i've ever seen. My god
I saw it live. Brilliant.
I remember watching this skating performance way back in the day and thinking how brilliant it was. All these years later in 2018 and it is STILL brilliant. The fact that Nancy Kerrigan and Tara Lapinski were even mentioned in the same breath as Oksana is criminal. Neither of them were even close to being in her league.
Tara Lapinski cheated in her jumps and got the gold medal.
Plus, those nasty comments Kerrigan made about Disney. 😡
Oksana was always the one
Homewrecker nancy was a whiner.
Tara was inspired by Oksana. Nancy was well Nancy. Tara isn't Oksana but she was a lovely skater.
This performance is absolutely unbelievable. I’ve never seen someone skate like that. We need this nowadays. When he said “artistic perfection” he meant it 💜💫☁️
It's now 2020, and I've just realized how much more brilliant and amazing Oksana was here considering her breathing was compromised due to the mask . . . and she still managed to captivate and enthrall even though two-thirds of her face was covered. It's all in the eyes!
Stunning...she has always been my favorite and its because of things like this
She was absolutely stunning! Mesmerizing. I remember watching her win the gold in 1994. Love the costume. Beautiful.

ive never seen any routine come close to this artistic level , to date.
Always my most favorite skater of all time. Never a dull moment. The raw talent is just breathtaking for me. Love you oksana 🌺❤️
Listen to the Hamilton.. he knows of what he speaks: you cannot put a mark on the excellence and depth of the art here. This is the artistic program of a pro show skater. It's a performance art piece... the emphasis is NOT on the jumps but on line and quality of edge and movement. 3t, 3s, and 2a were all landed on one leg. She's not the securest jumper in her pro career b/c she got tall, but the flow out matched the flow in. She does not need to display all six triples or a combination to win an artistic program. The posing, body rolls, shoulders, arm placement, and the headpiece and veil all convey a character, story, and tone of the piece as well as accelerate the tension toward the climax of the music. Oksana is spectacular here... especially the speed and unique positions of her spinning and the control and precision of the footwork sequence. She was always noted for precise balletic step sequences on her toes which is so difficult to accomplish not many other female skaters from her generation could do them.
WOW! Nicely articulated critique of this performance. personally its hard for me to watch the mechanics of this performance. I'm a musician and the music, the costume, and the all around mesmerizing aura she creates has me in a trance when i watch her. I actually had a chance to see her perform this routine live in Atlanta in 1995-96. Cant remember the exact year but i DEFINITELY remember seeing Oksana perform this. When we left my wife kept saying "YOU LIKE HER DONT YOU"! I wanted to run screaming back into the arena and jump off the upper balcony seats to shut her up! Of course i liked her. Shes a gold medalist who brought something very different to the world of figure skating and i knew, after watching her skate, i had just witnessed perfection in a sporting event. she is a legend!
+paul pecena Thanks for this critique! She was an amazing inspiration.
To each their own... as an art piece, this whole piece was a total kitsch... it is as tacky as the cultural appropriation of indigenous Australian aborigines.
I was embarrassed for her.
Always been a big fan of Hamilton's analysis & commentary -- none better !!
paul pecena it is better to execute a lesser degree of difficulty to a higher degree of perfection a lot of the time... although there are many moments that are glorious "failures" when people take amazing risk... we can appreciate that too...like when Michell Kwan & partner attempted a throw triple sovkov
This woman is so full of emotion and passion. There is an artistry beyond the sportsmanship.
if her skating wasn’t enough.. those eyes!!! girl was just a great performer. cry about it, nancy.
I remember watching this live years ago. Seems like yesterday. Such grace and beauty. The whole world loved Oksana!!...💜🤗💜
Wow. This is the first time I’ve ever seen or heard of this performance, and I am shocked. This was terrific.
Oh this lady performs magically, belly dance on ice, swan lake on ice. Superb.
She was fabulous!!!
She is such a star. I will never forget her first Olympic Games. In the middle of the annoying Kerrigan/Harding controversy scandal, here came this young girl from Ukraine, who skated like a magical elf and seduced everybody. She was amazing.
Being American I always supported the home team but no other skater could rival the artistic genius of this tortured soul. As a technician she left a lot to be desired, however, I love how she always went for it. Throughout all the bobbles she still managed to captivate. Legendary!!!

Always loved her skating. She mastered the technical aspects of competitive skating, but more importantly, she dance with her heart and soul. A pleasure to watch. Loved her costume too.
