They are all incredible but Nadia has a special place in my heart. She received the first perfect tens in 1976, and her performance was a real revolution in gymnastics. She was as gracious as a ballerina and as strong as a man.

Elena Mukhina should definitely be on the list. She was absolutely fantastic and performed some very difficult moves. She was definitely one of the very best.

Elena Mukhina definitely deserved a spot on this list. Its tragic what happened to her, but the difficulty of some of the moves she performed and the dedication she showed even after her leg injury, makes her deserving of a spot.
I feel awful for forgetting her on my list & I totally agree with you. She sadly came to represent all that was wrong & corrupt within the dominant East European team's especially the USSR of the day, had she been allowed the proper rest, care, time & medical intervention to completely heal from the original leg brake her sickening, horrifying "fall" would never have happened & her life wouldn't have been so terribly painful, she would probably have gone on to be as iconic as Olga & Nadia but instead she died of the complications & aftermath of her injuries year's later & after having being bedridden. It's a tragedy & a scandal that needed bringing to light but that came as such a dreadfully sad & unfair price 😢😢
Nadia Comaneci changed the sport. She made the impossible possible. She raised the difficulty level, as well as the popularity level. She saw to it that the ten was going to be not just something to shoot for, but something that can actually be obtained with hard work, perserverance, dedication, and of course, talent. All who came after her were inspired by her to achieve more than they ever thought they could. Nadia is in a class all by herself. She is gymnastics. She truly is perfection. There can be no other choice for #1, except Nadia Comaneci.
Nadia & Olga are the ones to put woman's gymnastics on the minds. As another put it, THEY were the ones who all current gymnast's watched & wanted to be like. Kudos to all the girls!
Daniella Silivas, Aliya Mustifina, Olga Korbut, Shannon Miller (really deserved an Honorable Mention), Dominque Dawes, and Simone will always be greatly admired, BUT there is only one #1 Nadia Nadia Nadia.
Olga Korbut was fantastic and her performance on the uneven bars was phenomenal. I don't see many comments on her here but that move on the uneven bars is shown to be the "most replayed" part of this video.
Olga Korbut will always be the greatest gymnast to me and so many others. It was Olga that blew our minds with her moves! She definitely “pushed the limits” on what a human body was capable of. She captivated all who saw her compete in the olympics and left us jaw open in awe. She was not just a powerhouse but exhibited stamina in her holds on beam, grace and elegance and a bit of whimsy on the floor and unmatched moves on the uneven bars. Others may demonstrate power and technique but Olga Korbut had it all. She made us all pay attention to gymnastics. She made it awesome.
Simone is tremendous don’t get me wrong. But I’ll never picture her doing a double back with a twist smack dab in the middle of performing Swan Lake. She (like most of today’s gymnasts) lack that balletic style that the Soviet’s & Nadia had in the early/mid 70’s. I’m aware the dynamics of Gymnastics has changed over the years. Today, grace and style has been replaced by power, height, distance, number of twist, flips and spins. I still marvel at Simone but nothing she has ever done or will do will compare to the elegance of Olga’s beautiful floor exercise in Munich back in 1972. They’re completely incomparable performers. Still, her floor ex, her uneven bars & beam performances changed gymnastics forever. Olga could contort her body with such style & grace. Every elite gymnast that’s existed since those breakthrough performances at the ’72 Olympics owes her career to every arthritic ache & pain Olga currently endures.
I will always and forever love Olga Korbut. We were both the same age when I sat glued to the TV and refused my mother’s request to come to the table for dinner. I wasn’t going to miss a second of watching this “child” pull off the most stunning performance I had ever seen. Love and Respect, always 🥰
And she did it all with pure grit, training and perseverence-organically, esp the 1st EVER #10 in gymnastics without the using of drugs like Simone Biles...who claimed it as "medication" but didn't declare it until after.
Nadia is number 1 on my list. Her gymnastics was amazing, she brought so much attention to the sport, really changed the sport from womens gymnastics to teen girl gymnastics, and she didn't go around calling herself the GOAT.

Agreed, you don't get the 1980 American team without the popularity of those young women. I was 7 years old during the '76 Olympics. My friends and I all took dance before that, but after watching Nadia, we all added gymnastics to our activities. It was an explosion. All young girls wanted to do gymnastics. We all wanted to be Nadia.

Sorry I disagree strongly. Nadia was ok but everything she did was so simple compared to the incredible, complex and difficult moves invented by Simone Biles. No other athlete comes close to her skills, nor ever will. Compare videos and you will see the difference, she should have received all TENS, but the judges were racists.
This is missing Elena Mukhina ❤️ The best. She combined the difficult elements of Olga (adding a TWIST to the Korbut flip) with the grace of Nadia. If her horrible accident had not happened, she would have dominated 1980. She was definitely just as good as both Olga and Nadia.

Nadia was #1. Simone Biles was magnificent at what she did, but had the added advantage of better training techniques that evolved from the 1970's to her years in the 2010's. Nadia also has a song named after herself, "Nadia's theme."
Being a gymnastic myself I always wanted to be just like Olga and Nadia they have inspired me to do this sport for 13 years. I love this sport. If it wasn't for Olga AND Nadia, gymnastics won't be where it is today. Gymnastics is not just about power, or how many flips can to be done but gymnastics was all about grace also demonstrates strength, balance, and body control. Olga and Nadia will always be #1 in the history of this beautiful sport.

The worst thing they did to Nadia was prevent her from traveling, after her coach defected, because they were afraid she might defect, too. Which she eventually did, back in 1989. As I said, read her book. It's a fascinating story.
I think the older gymnasts definitely deserve recognition as being the greatest. They pioneered the way of gymnastics, and even though they didn't do as complicated routines as the girls do now, there was a certain amount of grace and beauty in their moves. I believe gymnastics should be a balance of ballet and physical prowess. The ladies of the 60s and 70s did it best, imo.
Agree. I hate what has become of gymnastics today. It is more like watching acrobats because grace and artistry are no longer major factors, in my opinion. It is more about power and complicated moves so it is like watching men with these new more difficult and complicate routines. And it is more about counting twists or flips and the height etc. I prefer the old school routines that were more ballet-like. If I want power and complicated moves, there's the men's division.
Nadia and Olga should be one and two. They both had style, elegance, and grace. When you watch them, you are watching perfection. They could float through routines rather than sounding like a mack truck when they land.

It's extremely difficult to achieve the balance, control and precision necessary for a perfect execution. Few outstanding gymasts have achieved this... but none so natural, graceful and effortlessly as Nadia Comaneci.
Nadia will always be #1. The combination of skills and grace. Absolute perfection. And for whoever disagrees, please note that the apparatus has evolved drastically. Put Simone and/or any top gymnast of the new generation on that same floor, the vault or on these uneven bars. Also have them scored for artistic skills. Let's see how they do...

They are all excellent. But Nadia was incomperable. At 14 years she broke the #10. She looked like an angel flowing through the air. Beautiful.

They are all incredible but Nadia has a special place in my heart. She received the first perfect tens in 1976, and her performance was a real revolution in gymnastics. She was as gracious as a ballerina and as strong as a man.

I feel awful for forgetting her on my list & I totally agree with you.
She sadly came to represent all that was wrong & corrupt within the dominant East European team's especially the USSR of the day, had she been allowed the proper rest, care, time & medical intervention to completely heal from the original leg brake her sickening, horrifying "fall" would never have happened & her life wouldn't have been so terribly painful, she would probably have gone on to be as iconic as Olga & Nadia but instead she died of the complications & aftermath of her injuries year's later & after having being bedridden. It's a tragedy & a scandal that needed bringing to light but that came as such a dreadfully sad & unfair price 😢😢
Nadia Comaneci changed the sport. She made the impossible possible. She raised the difficulty level, as well as the popularity level. She saw to it that the ten was going to be not just something to shoot for, but something that can actually be obtained with hard work, perserverance, dedication, and of course, talent. All who came after her were inspired by her to achieve more than they ever thought they could. Nadia is in a class all by herself. She is gymnastics. She truly is perfection. There can be no other choice for #1, except Nadia Comaneci.

Olga Korbut will always be the greatest gymnast to me and so many others. It was Olga that blew our minds with her moves! She definitely “pushed the limits” on what a human body was capable of. She captivated all who saw her compete in the olympics and left us jaw open in awe. She was not just a powerhouse but exhibited stamina in her holds on beam, grace and elegance and a bit of whimsy on the floor and unmatched moves on the uneven bars. Others may demonstrate power and technique but Olga Korbut had it all. She made us all pay attention to gymnastics. She made it awesome.

Simone is tremendous don’t get me wrong. But I’ll never picture her doing a double back with a twist smack dab in the middle of performing Swan Lake. She (like most of today’s gymnasts) lack that balletic style that the Soviet’s & Nadia had in the early/mid 70’s.
I’m aware the dynamics of Gymnastics has changed over the years. Today, grace and style has been replaced by power, height, distance, number of twist, flips and spins. I still marvel at Simone but nothing she has ever done or will do will compare to the elegance of Olga’s beautiful floor exercise in Munich back in 1972. They’re completely incomparable performers. Still, her floor ex, her uneven bars & beam performances changed gymnastics forever. Olga could contort her body with such style & grace. Every elite gymnast that’s existed since those breakthrough performances at the ’72 Olympics owes her career to every arthritic ache & pain Olga currently endures.
I will always and forever love Olga Korbut. We were both the same age when I sat glued to the TV and refused my mother’s request to come to the table for dinner. I wasn’t going to miss a second of watching this “child” pull off the most stunning performance I had ever seen. Love and Respect, always 🥰

My friends and I all took dance before that, but after watching Nadia, we all added gymnastics to our activities. It was an explosion. All young girls wanted to do gymnastics. Sorry I disagree strongly. Nadia was ok but everything she did was so simple compared to the incredible, complex and difficult moves invented by Simone Biles. No other athlete comes close to her skills, nor ever will. Compare videos and you will see the difference, she should have received all TENS, but the judges were racists.

Being a gymnastic myself I always wanted to be just like Olga and Nadia they have inspired me to do this sport for 13 years. I love this sport. If it wasn't for Olga AND Nadia, gymnastics won't be where it is today. The worst thing they did to Nadia was prevent her from traveling, after her coach defected, because they were afraid she might defect, too. Which she eventually did, back in 1989. I think the older gymnasts definitely deserve recognition as being the greatest. They pioneered the way of gymnastics, and even though they didn't do as complicated routines as the girls do now, there was a certain amount of grace and beauty in their moves. I believe gymnastics should be a balance of ballet and physical prowess. The ladies of the 60s and 70s did it best, imo.
Agree. I hate what has become of gymnastics today. It is more like watching acrobats because grace and artistry are no longer major factors, in my opinion. It is more about power and complicated moves so it is like watching men with these new more difficult and complicate routines. And it is more about counting twists or flips and the height etc. I prefer the old school routines that were more ballet-like. If I want power and complicated moves, there's the men's division.
