Piano Student Red Flags: Are We Fixing the Wrong Things?
Вставка

- Us piano teachers go into "fix it" mode so quickly, but are we focusing on the WRONG things and actually turning our students off to piano?
In this video, I'll share a *magic question* that I've started asking before "fixing" any red flags that pop up during a lesson.

I just want to say how grateful I am to find a channel that address piano/music teachers with advice, not the students. Even with years of experience, sometimes I still feel so out of my depth when handling difficult students
Thank you for your kind words. I'm also thankful for this platform and for the little community that is forming! Being a piano/music teacher can be isolating. Thanks!
@@TheTattooedPianoTeacher I will be following your channel for more, thanks! Your videos have confirmed my feeling lately that I am not alone in feeling isolated, as I had to learn everything I know on the job. They have been greatly helpful
@@johnapple6646 I'm so glad to hear that! Thank you, John. So glad to have you here!
Leading with positive feedback instead of straight correction is a great piece of advice. Nice job with the video.
Thank you! 🩵
This video seems to imply that a) everyone can be made to enjoy piano lessons some how and 2) every student can be taught to play well, or at least better. Neither of these propositions is true and it is important to accept that. It is also important to accept that not all students/teachers are good matches, and the best thing you can recommend for some students is a teacher change. And this can be beneficial for many reasons, including the obvious -- the student has outgrown your teaching ability.
Why is a student learning a piece too quickly a red flag? Because they are maybe not being sufficiently challenged?
Yes, you said it! Not always the sign of something gone "wrong," but I've seen students, over time, lose faith in themselves or their teacher--they can tell they are just skimming the surface of their potential and they'll stop trying or get bored. And they might never say anything! But as they lose connection, they may eventually give up even though they are very talented.
When I see this starting to happen with my students, we brainstorm a new project or pivot to a different book (or whatever change of pace suits them), I see the life come back into them and they start to practice without being asked, come up with their own project ideas, etc.
I didn't really explain that in the video, so thanks for your great question!
