    I just wanted to drop you a quick note to say how valuable your videos are for new (and those of us nearing the end of our career) teachers. You have been able to capture the nuances of teaching privately and/or small groups exceptionally well and your advice is marked with crucial heads-ups for all of us. We sometimes forget that each student is an individual and that we all…young or old….learn at different rates and come to the lessons with varying backgrounds, desires, wants, needs, and possibly learning challenges. Please keep making these videos!! AND reviewing beginner methods.

    One of the most important skills I have my students practice is finding the groups of two and three black keys without looking. The first drill is closing their eyes and finding all of the groups of three black keys and playing them in a block, starting with the lowest group with their left hand, then the right hand finds the next group, the left hand then crosses over to find the next one, etc. They have to go all the way up and all the way down without looking. They must use their 1st and 5th fingers to feel for the extra space between the groups and use their middle three fingers to play the group of three. Having this skill is essential for being able to read music, as pianists we don't have time to look down at our hands and back to the sheet music all the time. After doing the black key 2 and 3 drills, I will then randomly call out a group and which hand I want them to use to find and play it. I will then begin associating each white note to a group of two or three black keys. We then do the same drill but this time find and play all of the C's from the lowest to the highest without looking, just using the group of two black keys and playing the note to the left (C). I will later ask them to find and play a white note in a particular hand, with their eyes closed. Later we add the 5 black keys and begin discussing the different note names and the idea of flats and sharps.

      Love this! I use the "eyes closed" trick a lot too. It has so many benefits and they think it's a game! Thanks for sharing your experience and tips! 🩵

    Thank you!!! One of my little students is 3, almost 4, and for them, sitting at the piano, following instructions, engaging with what's on a page placed in front of them... These things are challenging. So it's SO ENCOURAGING to remember that - even if they are just barely ready for me to start picking and choosing certain activities from various method books - all that time we can spend playing games of L and R, finger numbers, black key groups, musical alphabet, high and low, fast and slow, clapping rhythms... Are all laying the foundation for when we are finally *really* ready to crack open a book. Nothing's wasted. I needed to hear that and know that its OK to lean into the stage where the child is at.

      Yes!! You said it so well. I do understand your feelings--been there. But you are absolutely right. Engaging in those simple, but foundational music concepts is perfect and age appropriate. And let's not forget the importance of simply helping a 3yo to think "piano/music is fun!" Hopefully those core memories will follow them, and those basic skills and games will make them amazing note readers when they're ready. Thank you for sharing! 🩵

    Your books look AMAZING!! Just perfect to pair with WunderKeys Primer 1! Only thing making me pause is that i use colors for the musical alphabet, but in a different order than you. I start with red for C, orange for D, etc. So too bad, as Im concerned the different colors will confuse my students 😢 Ill definitely have a think on this!

      Oh no different color palettes 😭 Well, do let me know if you decide to give them a try.
      And I'm taking note of all feedback I receive for future edits and revisions.
      Thank you!

    Thank you for introducing this resource you have developed. I’ll be ordering it. Will you also peruse the technique book online and the Primer resource mentioned? (A different video was highlighted:( Thanks again 👍🎶

      Thank you! I hope your beginners love it!
      As of today, 3 Piano Skill Set books are available: the Pre-reading Writing & Technique, and the Primer Writing Book (amzn.to/3yJqf8o).
      I'm currently working hard on finishing up Primer Technique! I'm so excited to release that one, and eventually all levels. Once the Primer Technique is published, I make a video similar to this one highlighting all of the Primer-level skills.
      Thank you so much for your patience! 🩵

    Pheonix, your videos are SO helpful and your books look wonderful! I'm so excited! I will be using Wunderkeys Primer One with an 8 year old beginner in the fall. Since WK doesn't have a dedicated theory book (I'm used to Faber), which of your books would you recommend if I could only choose either the writing or the technique book? (Although let's be honest, I want both!)

    • @TheTattooedPianoTeacher
      @TheTattooedPianoTeacher  21 день тому

      Great question; difficult question 😂 If you are used to having a theory book as part of the curriculum, I think you would appreciate WK Primer + Piano Skill Set Writing Book. I love WK, but there aren't really writing assignments or dedicated theory pages. I'm thinking--if you want to add some extra technique along the way, you could always come up with things on the spot or teach finger patterns by rote. But having the Writing Book there will make sure all of those skills are covered. Thank you! I hope your student loves it!

    Although these books are good and timely, one crucial thing was forgotten. That is, the rhythmic aspect of the notes. That is physically feeling the beat,, the pulse of the music. These things are crucial and can only be brought out by physical action of the student. That is the clapping and counting of notes and rests. Without this these fine books nicely illustrated and well explained on this video will not mean a thing unless the rhythmic aspect of the notes are addressed at first.

    • @TheTattooedPianoTeacher
      @TheTattooedPianoTeacher  13 днів тому

      Clapping, counting notes/rests and identifying rhythmic patterns are DEFINITELY included in these books! (And reviewed and expanded upon in the next levels as well!). Rhythm was most definitely not forgotten, I assure you! In fact, in the Pre-reading Technique book, there is a metronome activity for every skill introduced.
