Years ago, my roommate was about to reuse an old toaster oven that had previously caught fire. Unable to talk her out of it, I packed a suitcase with my most essential items and waited in the apartment lobby until she called to confirm that she'd finished cooking and nothing happened. It's one way to really find out what you consider most essential in your wardrobe and your life.
I had to evacuate from my home this march and I squeezed my absolute favourite things into one suitcase. I am back home now, thankfully, but I still remember what I packed then.
I moved countries recently and had to put most of my items in a container, that I wouldn't have access to for about 4 months. So I just packed 2 suitcases with clothing that I wanted the most (And yarn). That was also a great lesson in what I use the most v.s. what items just give a bit of variety (or what I didn't miss at all).
I am 59 and recently decided to change my style instead of trying to hold on to clothes that don’t fit and may never fit, even though I am exercising. That has been a good experience.
Thinking of what you'd purchase starting from scratch is a great help with decluttering, because asking myself, "Would I buy this again?" quickly separates items I love from those that are just 'ho-hum' to be put in a 'maybe, maybe' pile and can consider donating. The end result will be a wardrobe I really love. Very helpful video, thank you!
Hi Audrey! You could create a series of “ how to dress for…” and pick the occasion. For example “how to dress for a funeral” . I would love to watch a series like that in your channel, I would really look forward for your insight. Love your content
Love this video Audrey! The title caught my attention for sure. My suitcase with 90% of my most loved work and play clothes was stolen from the car my coworkers and I rented on a business trip years ago. I felt so “lost” after the incident having to build a new wardrobe because I had really put a lot of time and thought into the pieces I bought (bargain hunting, etc.) It’s funny how our clothes are so much part of our identity and losing them feels like losing part of ourselves.
What an awesome way to identify your most loved pieces! Kind of like an “emergency preparedness” idea but for clothes. I think mine would be: -a roll-tab utility button down shirt. I love these! I’d get short sleeve or 3/4 sleeve so I can use it warm weather and layer it during cold weather - a flutter-sleeve blouse. A little boho, a little feminine. Can pair easily with bottoms. -A waist high midi skirt. I love skirts. -a boho peasant skirt -a long dress -Ankle boots, like Thursday boots. My favorite are the slip on style - Tom’s wedges - Taos sandals - wooden necklace -statement earrings, and gold earrings -a silk scarf and a wool fedora. These are staples all year round in my closet.
Flare black pants? Straight? Both maybe. Skirts longer for most. Very young skirt or black tights or something. Black & white. T colors? Blouses? Blazers❤
Straight leg jeans…medium to dark wash. White button up shirt, white long sleeve tee, loafers, blazer or cardigan, linen dresses for hot weather, white short sleeve V neck tees.
I started emptying my closets yesterday ohh my goodness most everything could be gone and I wouldn't miss it!! I turned 56 this year and I'm really going by your suggestions/tips and starting a new wardrobe
This is a good idea. I live in a climate with three distinct seasons - hot, humid summers, very cold winters, and in between weather in the spring/fall. A few pieces work as crossovers between fall/winter/spring, but I would need to create a least three lists. They would work when going on vacation to places with different climates too. The most essential thing in winter would be a long warm down coat and some boots rated to -30 Celsius.
As a stylist, I too enjoy the wardrobe basics but accessories , like scarves or pins, worn in a multitude of ways, are what sets your personality apart from the pack. One size fits all, and the costs are minimal.
Beautiful suggestions! I'm trying to rebuild my wardrobe for various reasons and I get easily overwhelmed, so starting with basic functional pieces is a great reminder.
It can definitely be overwhelming so yes I think starting with the basics is the key and then it's nice to add more unique & fun pieces as well. Something with patterns is a must as well in my opinion Good luck. Enjoy to have fun with it!
@@yifatjovani333 It can be overwhelming if your wardrobe is full of basics too. I have two t-shirt drawers, organised by sleeve length, collar type, colour and season. Turtlenecks are the hardest thing to part with.
@@polishtheday I 💯 agree. I believe to create your optimal wardrobe you want to have a mix of both basics & unique & prints then with this variety you can have ease creating many different outfit looks!
I totally think the key is to know what your true personal style is! Basics are always needed and it is a must,! For me as well it is a must have unique piece with patterns& colours to make me truly express my personality!
Thank you for another very helpful video! You have such a pleasant and clear communication style, and I'm especially grateful for your consistent attention to balancing fashion and function; we should be able to look good AND feel comfortable, no matter where we go or what we do.
If I lost all my clothes now I would be in deep trouble because currently you can only buy shirts/blouses that are either super long and meant to be worn tucked or are cropped extremely short (all meant to be worn with high rise pants) and those look terrible on me. I just hope I can make the ones I have last long enough for the trends to change again. (At which point those who look better in tucked shirts will be in trouble.) I cannot for the life of me understand why fashion has to mean all stores offering only the exact same style to all people of all shapes and tastes... Why can't they keep at least a small part of the selection "off-trend", for those of us who care more about what actually looks good on us than being trendy?
This is a good exercise! I have a pretty good sense of what works on me and what doesn’t, but really narrowing it down like this helps you understand exactly what you reach for the most! Thank you for a great video, and as always, really good advice!
Welcome back Audrey. It's so nice to see you in cropped pants and mini skirts again. You seem to have recovered your enthusiasm. 😉 The longer wide leg pants overwhelmed your petite frame. You look great in your favorite clothes. 😍
Wow, I really love this video and the idea itself. I also love the pieces you chose! They have a modern, youthful edge to them that suits you perfectly! LOVELY! ❤️🥰
Today I bought two pairs of Levi's keeping in mind the tips from your previous videos and I am extremely satisfied with my purchase! I'm currently trying to choose my wardrobe essentials with consideration and you have been very helpful, thank you so much 💛
Interesting, I would add a waterproof warm coat and replace the boat neck with a Vneck I have a bigger bust, and a couple of lightweight merino wool jumpers to layer.
I'm starting to notice that the things I find essential- and gravitate towards the most- are neutral colors (which probably isn't that much of a surprise in some aspects). Taking away the instance of brown being a hot, trendy color for the fall season, there's just something very classic and timeless about the color in general. I'd also say the same for black and white, so naturally, I'd say that those three colors tend to make up the core of my style. Thank you for making this video, Audrey! 😊
I loved this video and the whole concept. What a great approach! I have done something similar recently with my entire jewelry collection. For every single item, I asked myself if I would buy this right now for my current and future self. If not, I let it go. And now the pieces that remain feel like me, and get worn much more frequently.
Yes, thank you for your insight and an interesting exercise! it helps me as I am making efforts to lose weight for health reasons and am finding motivation in being able to express my personal style and wear clothes that I love and feel great in. As I lose the weight and have need to purchase smaller sizes, I am starting to think about what is most important to me, my lifestyle, self-expression, fashion and function...while making the most of my budget.
The colors you are wearing in this video really complement you. I see you going to a lot more black now which is quite a change for you based on what I watched a year ago. I wore all black for years and have gone to more softness, charcoal, and muted blues. There is a feminine softness that is lost when we wear so much black. It's certainly classic and 'sharp'. Sometimes, for some people, it's harsh & hard. That blue sweater would look great with black pants.
The skirt and blazer outfit, to my eye, looks like you are missing your pants. Not sure if that is because the length is the same on both pieces and the all black makes it look like a long shirt instead of two pieces? I love all of your videos and tips. Thank you for all of your help.
Great video - Love it. I’ve been pondering this The Back Bone of Your Wardrobe. …then the fun starts with the fashion trend influence. My life style has change lately and have joined a couple of clubs and need more clothes for socialising so I’m looking for, what you said Polished look. Jewellery Box I’ve forgotten all about I have started to look at those bits and bobs. Ps I am really interested in the journey your Mantlepiece is taking that lovely handled vase ..I have two brass candle sticks each end and an old slate clock in the centre I think I like the balance. I love mantelpieces it has a great personality of its own. I think of my home as a friend and when I come home I always say hello house. When I go on holiday I always send the house a post card. If The postman ever reads that card…he must think I’m crazy ha ha. Any back to sorting out my wardrobe. Excellent video. X
Thank you for another wonderful video! Your style inspires me. I would like to ask you if you would like to make a video in the future about how to dress to a classical concert or theatre, evening or day representation. I love to go to these events and I often don't know what to wear. Your simple, appropriate, chic style, with a twist would help me a lot!
I love this video! I also would love to see a series called “How to dress for…”. Someone mentioned a funeral. While that’s not the happiest of events, I would really love to see what you would wear. Much more useful than the “drinks with the girls” ideas we always see in UA-cam! Thank you for your great work!
Thank you Audrey! I’m in a similar dilemma. I’ve recently lost 30 lbs and it’s like starting over. I was wondering where to start and this video was very helpful.
While I think black looks incredibly classy, it can also look incredibly common and very casual. The place I live, it is extremely common to see multiple people wearing the same black shirt, jeans, and a mix of sneakers, boots, or Birkenstocks. I personally do not wear much black on top anymore for multiple reasons, but I do have one black top that is quite the exception. It is a longer sleeve with a higher neckline and very well cut back. I can wear it both front or back which gives me a lot of options for styling but I’ve actually found that it feels much different from what everyone else is wearing which is typically just a black T-shirt or tank top. I will also where are my necklaces backwards and let them drape down my back with the lower back line and it looks incredibly Elegant and unique from what everyone else is wearing and I get many compliments. While I’m seeing so many of the same styles going around, making unique twists like this separates you from everyone else while still enjoying the things you like. I really don’t want to blend in/fit in, I want to stand out now entering my 30s. I love seeing how you like styling these classic pieces in unique ways! That’s one of the things I appreciate the most about your channel. I am at a place where I need to really pair down my wardrobe so what I’ve decided to do is pick out the things I wear the most and just wear those for a while. Everything else has gone away in bins until I feel the inclination to shop. Then I go shop things I already have to see what I would “buy again”!
I think the first thing I would get would be ... Three t-shirts, shortsleeved or longsleeved, depending on the season. Merino if available, but good quality and with a good fit, and three different colors, not white or black. Add trousers/jeans, a skirt, a cardigan. Tights. And I would start knitting a nice Icelandic lopapeysa-sweater at once.
Very interesting concept. I think many of us traditionalists would agree with your choices if not always the same colors. My one large difference is that I live in a desert and shoerts keep us alive four months out of the year.
Same here, except only for two months and there’s no desert here. It’s rarely cool enough for jeans so it’s shorts all day at home and cotton dresses, skirts and culottes when I go out.
Wow! Thank you! What a great list. I would add a few warmer items to the list, but this is just a latitude issue... I would replace the short skirt with a longer narrow skirt, otherwise, I would be able to use your list.
Love the video as a good wardrobe starter for those of us who are upgrading our style and starting with the basics. Black is too strong on me and white is draining, so I need to change these out for warm neutrals.
This came at the perfect time...I am clearing out clothimg that dpesnt work for me anymore. All my blazers I am keeping because different cuts, lengths and styles come and go amd I am not a slave to what is in in blazers...I have precious ones that best fit my body NONE are the wide oversize ones in style but I KNOW what works best for me. What I am mostly purging are tops. Luckily I have a precious few like the boat neck you shpwed mine is a very high quality heavy knit 20 years o?ld and I do wear it every fall it is too jeavy a knit for any other ti e of year where I live. i also have a few favorite slacks I never did wear the supertight ones but I cannot wear unsewn pleats or wide ones so I will stick with what a I have and wear those. nd yes my pants are cropped at 5ft 4in. I lile cropped tops rather than lomg ones again due to being a short waisted petite. Mostly I am getting rid of textured tops I dont like anymore. Also mearly every print I am ditching I WONT be buying the oversize flowers trend not for me. My only purchase so far is a fishia blazer and shirt. I have all the basic colors. I am warm coloring so my browns from light to dark are all warm nrowns and camel is great for me.
Such an informative video, thank you so much for sharing Audrey, I thoroughly enjoyed. Love all your outfits, especially the black pants and bag. The only items I don't have are the boots (that's going on my list for future purchases). Stay blessed xxx
Funny, I had to do this recently with makeup when I suffered an eye infection and had to toss all my eye makeup, creams and makeup brushes and start over: it is amazing how many fewer items I truly needed when starting from scratch. I think starting a wardrobe from scratch would also be an interesting experiment but nevertheless one I hope never to be forced to experience.
Comment about the white sweater: I would buy a v-neck cashmere sweater and a cashmere scarf that go together. A cashmere scarf can warm the neck in cold weather -- when you want it to -- and can be removed if you get too warm. Get it in the right color and you can use it with a thousand other outfits. I bought a gray one from Fisherʻs Finery a few years back and literally wore it just about every day for over a year; I even took it with me on summer outings when I headed for the beach, where itʻs cooler (usually). For those of us on the other side of menopause, a turtleneck isnʻt the best choice most of the time, but I still want a sweater and a choice to wear something around my neck, or not. I could never understand it when my mom "didnʻt like anything around her neck" after menopause; now I do.
Really enjoyed this video! It answered my question about my style, i picked blue and grey jeans, two light colour jumpers, jersey dress, Moto jacket and denim jacket 😅 I thought it would be something different.
00:44-00:47: Cashmere cardigans, 1 mid calf length and 1 mid thigh length, one with a shawl collar, in camel color 1:45: wrap-front blouses 2:07: Flats, cap-toe in neutral colors 3:11: one pair of straight leg jeans, dark wash ankle skimming and a pair of trousers, wool=blend, wide leg in camel 3:38: 1 DVF wrap dress, knee length in an geometric print 4:35: One casual, graphic T-shirt (text only, no images) 5:21: One large silk scarf, neutral colors: cream, navy, gold colored 6:54: one mid-skirt, ankle skimming in satin texture 7:24: 1 trench, past the knee, neutral color 7:51: 1 medium sized, cross body purse in leather (not in black)
This was so helpful for me! I've been wanting to reinvent my style (lack thereof really 🤣 ) so this will be such a great reference for me. I was wondering if you might be able to do one of these for accessories as well?
Ugh! I wish there was a link for good black pants!!! please a video idea!!! everything these days has awful front pleats that make me look like I have two lower bellies!!
🤣 Very timely video! I didn't lose all of my clothes, I lost most of me. I have now reached 200 pounds lost (I didn't start at 200 pounds and get back to my early adult figure, I LOST 200 pounds). So I have both the joy and the challenge of starting all over again. My list is slightly different than yours, but the idea translates perfectly for me. Thanks for the tips, and keep up the great content!
Congratulations!! I know when I started on the keto diet and went from a size 16-18-20 to a size 6-8 and for the first time ever wanted my body to look nice and not just hide it completely -- thatʻs when I started watching capsule wardrobe videos. I had to completely redo the way I thought and dressed, and wanted to look like I lived in the 2020s, not the 1980s.
Hi Audrey, I'm on the look out for a new pair of Chelsea boots and the ones you've got pictured on your front page look just the ticket but they are not linked in the actual video. Do you remember where they are from? Many thanks!!!!
I live in San Diego and for some reason black looks "off" down here. It's very casual here and if anything people wear more of a charcoal gray and of course all the neutral colors.

You look great in everything, however I loved you in the light blue crewneck and blazer! This was a helpful video. Thank you!😍
Wow!
Love it Audrey !
Thank you so much !
Love from France 🇫🇷

this is wonderful! i totally need to find a pair of black pants like you have featured from Zara. thank you for you videos.
A great perspective for building a capsule wardrobe. Thank you.
Such an informative video, thank you so much for sharing Audrey, I thoroughly enjoyed. Love all your outfits, especially the black pants and bag. The only items I don't have are the boots (that's going on my list for future purchases).
Stay blessed xxx
Thanks, Audrey, for practical information to look our best ...yet again. Have a great week. 😄❤️🌞
This actually happened to me recently, so your video is much appreciated!
Such sound advice,thanks so much🇿🇦
Comment about the white sweater: I would buy a v-neck cashmere sweater and a cashmere scarf that go together.
I had to do this and it has been a process! I’m so much intentional with what I buy now
Really enjoyed this video! It answered my question about my style, i picked blue and grey jeans, two light colour jumpers, jersey dress, Moto jacket and denim jacket 😅 I thought it would be something different.
Love your videos. Would like to know the brands of the basics that you purchase. Thanks!

This was so helpful for me! I've been wanting to reinvent my style (lack thereof really 🤣 ) so this will be such a great reference for me. I was wondering if you might be able to do one of these for accessories as well?
Very informative, thank you--but the link to the jeans is no longer active.
Ugh! I wish there was a link for good black pants!!! please a video idea!!! everything these days has awful front pleats that make me look like I have two lower bellies!!
Uniqlo has some affordable and classic options that aren’t pleated! I like their two-way stretch pants in black and navy.
Hello 👋🏾
Greetings from 🇰🇪
I love your style
What jeans do find in cropped length? Also how to dress up your black skirt?
I don’t think I would think of any of those essentials😅so thanx for making us this video🫶🏼
200 lbs is something to celebrate in a big way. Best of luck on your new style journey.
@@polishtheday Thanks!
@@kimberlyperrotis8962 Thanks!
@@SusanBame Congrats yourself! It feels amazing 🤩 to finally like yourself! 🤗
Interesting. I'm going to have to think this one through.
Great ideas. Would you think about a video about bad purchases.
Very smart ideas 💡.
Thank you so much Audrey 💓
I love your voice so much🙌😭💞
Hi Audrey, I'm on the look out for a new pair of Chelsea boots and the ones you've got pictured on your front page look just the ticket but they are not linked in the actual video. Do you remember where they are from? Many thanks!!!!
After losing 40 lbs this is basically i started over
All my blacks first
Then jeans
Then tops
Great video, Audrey! Could you please tell me the brand name of the green tweed jacket in the picture in your blog? Thank you!
Where do you shop?
Loved this video! Thanks! 😊
I know this is about rebuilding your wardrobe. But I need to mention your home. I assume its your home. Just so calm. Would you ever do a video on it?
Perfect as usual!!! I love your blue shirt. Where can I buy it? Thank you.🙏🥰
That was fun! Will start doing this!
Thank you Audrey!
Love your videos. I've learned so much. What I really want to know is what you do to get those great legs! Are you a runner?
I live in San Diego and for some reason black looks "off" down here. It's very casual here and if anything people wear more of a charcoal gray and of course all the neutral colors.
LOVE THIS, THANK YOU!
Such a great video 🤩
I love your style.
Black pants for me is essencial...
Loved this. Thank you
i'll never get tired of wearing black 👍
Where did you buy the Chanel-style shoes? Thanks!
Is there a similar item link for the skirt? I love!!
Love your Videos, love your Voice!
