I’ve freed myself from MY color palette. Yes, I admit certain colors look better on me. I see it in the mirror. BUT… I was avoiding colors that just brought me so much joy! The older I get the more I realize how short life really is. WEAR THE BUBBLEGUM PINK !!!!!!
I have many silk blouses and 5 silk smooth knit tops that I have owned and worn for 25 years. They are definitely worth keeping as their quality is so superior to what is on the market now.
@@ElementalWhispers most require dry cleaning. Some are washable. If they require dry cleaning, I purchase an in home kit by woolite so I don’t have to pay up the wazoo at a cleaner’s. If they’re washable, I hand wash them (or put them in a delicates bag and cycle in the washer on delicate) and line dry. Also keep in mind that you can wear silks multiple times before you need to wash them, so it’s better to stretch out their wash cycle because doing it too often can decrease their longevity.
@@ElementalWhispers yup! Same. My mom told me about it and since then I’ve bought more natural fabric pieces since I know I can clean them at home. You should be able to find them at your local grocery store, but if not they have them on Amazon. They’re basically cloths you put into the dryer (idk what kind of solution they’re soaked in) with your dry clean items and they come out nice and fresh.
@@ElementalWhispers I machine wash all my silk pieces, even the vintage ones: inside out, cool delicate cycle, air dry & iron. In all the years, only one piece was damaged by this which I ascribe to poor quality. Everything else still looks brand new.
The “get rid of it if not worn in a year” rule probably applies more to ladies whose closets are overflowing and burgeoning with every trend that’s come down the pike in the last 30 years. In cases like that, it’s a good rule to implement to get a handle on all the “stuff”. With the Planetary Plague Pandemic, many of us have been in hibernation and so have our wardrobes. At this point, re-evaluation of lives and wardrobes is necessary. Personally I think it’s kind of fun to look through my clothing that’s been hidden away for two years & shop my own closet!
I live in Canada. The dressing rule about white pants and accessories used to be “wear only May long weekend to Sept labour day weekend”. Now I feel free to dig out my white jeans whenever I want! Thanks for a great video😍
I was going to mention this, too, no white after Labor Day rule has been cancelled. Love seeing winter white worn: a big chunky white or ivory sweater & bottom are striking! 😍
I like this topic. I think that the classic rules are good to learn to give us a foundation when we are lost or all over the place with our wardrobe but once we nail the classic style it is good to start experimenting and making it more personal. I think that the rules I mostly break nowadays are about colours. I’ve learned that black does not go with navy so you shouldn’t mix them. I wear the two colours together quite often now and I love it. I used to wear either silver or gold toned jewellery, while now I mix it but I usually wear one piece that is dual tone and brings it all together. Also I followed the “neutral tones” trend and while that is a great base for any wardrobe I missed proper colour. I don’t buy the whole notion that cobalt blue or fuchsia pink are not elegant enough. Life is too short not to wear colour!
Actually, black & navy go beautifully together and are quite the Parisienne, & Milanese staple. One of my favourite combinations, of course, one needs to take into consideration one's personal colour and style personality. I am always happy to chat about that :) Stay Stylish with love Xxx
This was EXCELLENT! Unfortunately I also was a 'leggings police' for a while because they aren't considered chic. Leggings aren't for me, but if women want to wear them they shouldn't be shamed for it. At the end of the day, we should just focus on what we feel good wearing and not worry about 'style rules'. I'd love a part 2 of this. Thank you for a very uplifting video, Audrey. ❤️
This is what I call personal growth! Just because you believed in something in the past doesn't mean you have to stick to it if it no longer works for you presently. You can move on gracefully and you did that so well!
I have roughly 20 white button down shirts of different cuts, I have numerous little black dresses and blazers of all the neutral or staple colours. The same with shoes and boots.
Thank you for posting this. I really find that I love buying things I know create classic outfits like the white shirt and black dress. The more of these you own the more you can focus on great detail on the pieces
I have always hung on to a vest I crocheted 40 years ago in my twenties - just because I made it I guess. It's been in the back of my closet all that time. I noticed it once again a week or so ago, tried it on and decided what a fun addition to add back in to my wardrobe....after 40 years!
I really enjoyed this video and the topic. Would love if you do another one. For myself, I’m at a stage in my life that I dress to make myself happy, feel comfortable and look in the mirror and smile 😊 I enjoy reading about “fashion and styling tips” and following seasonal trends. That being said, I feel my best and most confident when I listen to myself and dress according to my own “rules”.
I use my leggings under dresses in the winter all the time. They are warm and work with my dresses as well as do tights. I have a bit of a boho streak in my style and love to have a funky item to perk up an outfit. I do have my wardrobe basics, but do love to make things personal and not just be a minimalist clone with black pants a white T and a blazer. Smart but can be a little boring. I was a nurse, but wore uniforms for most of my working life. So anything uniformy reminds me of work. I pay attention to colour and love a pop of a lovely shade to liven things up. Love your videos.
I’m right there with you on the leggings under a dress. I work with kids and end up sitting on the floor a lot, so I just wore pants to work every day for a while. Wearing leggings under my dresses & skirts (and bike shorts under dresses & skirts in the summer) let me get a lot more wear out of my skirts & dresses.
Such a wise approach, it is well worth keeping well made classic items. Also, I prefer dark wash denim in the winter, mid wash or light wash in the summer, as it feels softer and fresher.
After not tucking anything in for so long (because it seemed to go out of style for a couple of decades) I'm enjoying tucking tops in again and have revived my belt wardrobe (thank goodness I didn't declutter it!) although I don't always wear a belt, especially if I'm just doing a half-tuck. 🙂
I'm a 78 year old hourglass petite and I'm pretty rule-bound in my dressing. I have few clothes and stick pretty much with my colors. Please do other videos like this!
This is my favourite video you’ve made. I’m decades older than you, which may explain quibbles I have had with your advice in the past. Like you now, I know my style and my closet has multiples of things that work for me. Personally, I can’t have too many white shirts. I’ve also reached an age where I really dress to honour who I am, and not to look like anyone else’s version of a well dressed woman. I’m excited to see where you take this new approach!
A rule I’ve decided to break: that I have to stick to modern clothing! That modern clothing is the best thing on the market (it absolutely is not). I’m finding out that linen skirts, petticoats, light blouses, wool undergarments, etc are all pieces that can enhance one’s comfort and proportions that we’ve discarded as “old fashioned” and nonfunctional. They are quite the opposite and can make one feel fabulous and fit for the weather outside. Disengaging with what I’ve been told is “oppressive clothing” when it makes me feel liberated to wear it = aka my clothes give me the stylish silhouette rather than forcing my body to mold into the silhouette.
Love this! You're a class act, as always. There are several items that these "20 essentials" lists insist everyone "should own", and they don't work for me: Little black dress, black blazer, white T-shirt, grey business trousers, ballet flats etc. As an autumn, I look so lifeless and washed out in black, white, navy, grey etc, and ballet flats make me look dumpy even with my slim build. So it's definitely best to do what you're encouraging: find your own essentials. :)
I agree with all of these but specifically the one year rule. If you really love something and the time hasn’t come to wear it there’s nothing wrong with waiting for that moment or hopefully moments! Some peoples lives and life circumstances change and the time may come for that item. That being said if you have a closet full of these things it might be time for some of it to go:)
Re: one year rule. Maybe there was a time it made sense but in 2022 it does not. We are conscious of textile waste/pollution in a way we were not before. The pandemic seriously curtailed most peoples’ opportunities to wear their proudly curated pieces. Does a mild winter mean it’s time to ditch your warmest winter coat? Climate change is a factor as well. So no. If you love it, keep it and look for opportunities to happily wear it again.
I did declutter my closed, but only got rid of things that are never going to fit again (or never fit right in the first place) or are worn/stained/unusable. The rest I put into a storage bin. Makes it much easier to declutter without fear and gave me the “serene” closet I wanted. You do have to have the space to store the bin (under the bed is my favorite). If you don’t have space or have clothes you don’t want to fold up, you can create a “limit” by putting something on rod to define “use” & “maybe later”. I use my hanging sweater rack. Everything behind that is a keep for later and things in front are things for now. Even something like a garment bag would work. I also move out of season clothes there. Then my “use” portion is only what I am wearing now.
🤔 Museums often rotate 🔄 their costly 💰 collections 🖼, so why not apply those same principles of curation to our closets? It really needs to be stored in an alternate location, so you're not overwhelmed. Think this is a wise option〰️esp. if you live some where that actually experiences four distinct seasons. I do not, so heavily investing in Winter ❄️ Wear does 🚫 make a whole lot of sense. However, I do own several heavy coats (and a few lined wool items) that I refuse to part even if that means I only wear them sparingly here or reserve them when🧳 travel. 😉Favoring lightweight fabrics〰️ esp. those with moisture wicking capabilities〰️has been a major game changer for someone who runs hot 🥵 in a 😎 scorching Mediterranean-Desert climate🌡. Plus, I've always had significantly more regrets🤣 over being peer pressured to give away high quality or staple items that I LOVED😍. Pieces that also actually suited me, my hourglass shape, lifestyle, etc. Even though my style has transitioned, I've always valued variety. While I've kept to an overall color palette, I do like swapping silhouettes & introducing pops of color &/or pattern in smaller doses. Lately, I've been wanting to expand my use of stunning corporate 🏢 & church gear💒 I've collected over the years to suit other instances, but I also appreciate keeping some items strictly for more special occasion use to maintain their air of ✨️mystery & drama✨️ I've also gone up ⬆️ & down⬇️ in weight as well as 💲financial circumstances. Both reasons made me ever so grateful for being a hoarder. Learning smart tips from stylists on how to adjust oversized items or even things you might've outgrown has been ever so helpful. In fact, going on "No Buy" tangents has been quite liberating🎆. Looking for fresh online inspiration 👩💻, and shopping🛍 your closet can been very exciting🎉. 💚 Bridget from Cali ☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)
I never thought the "one year rule" made much sense. We pretty much know if we like a garment & will wear it again even if it hasn't gotten worn in a year. If I like it I'm gonna keep it....I'll wear it at some point & it will feel "new" again.
The more I listen to the experts “rules” on dressing the less I can creatively put an outfit together . I use to ….pre internet ….yes I’m that old lol (61) dress according to what I love to wear and then I started trying to follow the advice of the experts and now I don’t feel as confident dressing . But your vlog has opened my eyes and I’m glad to hear your views on style . BTW I loved all your white blouses , I have a weakness for white blouses the more feminine the better . They go with everything , especially ever so slightly distressed jeans and a simple pair of flats . That’s my uniform I love everything about your channel, I always learn something new from you , thank you 😘
Hello Audrey! We evolve and so does our fashion sense. I am 59 and have had a lot of life changes in the last five years. I am getting ready to retire soon! I love fashion and I continue to develop my personal style. I take care of myself (I eat well and exercise) and I don't follow the, "What to wear over 50 rule." At this point in my life I wear what makes me feel confident, happy and comfortable. I loved this video!❤
This applies also with the “how to” wear, especially with tucking in! The huge variety in our bodies means there can be no singular rule. Such rules often impact harshly on larger ladies so it’s great to revisit all the ‘rules’. ❤️
Here it is often thought western clothes is equivalent to you are modern. But I love wearing Indian outfits and that are so much comfortable .😍 That don't make me old..
Once at a Christmas part one of my co-workers (who is from Pakistan, I think) showed up in an ethnic outfit. It was a tunic and slim pants, and her outfit took my breath away. She was stunning! I love it when people show their cultural heritage.
Indian women wear the most stunning outfits. The draping, the vivid colors and the jewelry. It's like that culture cracked the code of how to look like an absolute goddess.
Exactly. I mean Indian style is also constantly changing with the times. Who's to say it's "old fashioned"...by that logic dresses are old fashioned since Western women wore them for centuries lol
I agree on all your points! In particular, I've had clothes for well over a decade that I may take a break from, but will circle back to after a couple of years. 💛
This was well needed. I'm someone who has always followed these rules (and many many more) blindly. Maybe it's because I lack confidence in my dressing game - it is safer to follow rules. My problem lately has been, now when I'm over thirty, I've gathered rules for fifteen years. And in my head they sound for example like this: " All black is always a classic choice! All black makes you look tired and older than you are! All black is slimming! You should always wear color with black! You should never wear navy/brown/beige/pink/yellow/pastels with black!" You get the idea...I've realized this actually causes lot of anxiety. So thank you for fresh thoughts.
I so agree with the “fashion policing” comment. I have found myself judging others for what they are wearing and have been afraid to try new things for fear of being judged by others. I have been focusing instead on accepting all people for however they what to express themselves and sending them positive thoughts as we are all different and I am not the queen of the land. LOL. I feel more comfortable in my own skin and more loving and positive overall. Thank you for your gentle and loving content.
I also learned that being judgmental made me criticize myself more harshly. The more I accepted others, the more I accepted myself. I wish someone had told me this when I was younger.
One of my earliest fashion memories is from watching TLC’s “What Not To Wear.” Stacy London said that horizontal stripes make you look wider, while vertical stripes make you look taller. I still have a hard time ignoring this ‘rule’ when I’m out shopping - and still tend to avoid horizontal stripes - but I think width and color of the stripes really play a part in whether or not it looks good on me. It also makes me think of when pinstripe dress pants/suits were in fashion and I wonder if they’ll ever come back!
it's not a "rule" you are supposed to follow, it's a fundamental fact of design and visual perception. You can choose to ignore it, but it doesn't change it.
I got a lot of useful information on WNTW and loved that show. I think that horizontal stripes do make you look wider but I still wear them. I specifically love my blue and white striped tops.
Actually, if you're curvy, vertical stripes look awful. They don't bend around a curvy woman's body. Just because vertical stripes make a slim woman look skinny does not mean the inverse is true. The most slimming pattern is actually chevrons.
The great tragedy of my life is that now I’m 80 I’ve finally decided what suits me and exactly the look the I aspire to . It’s a look I could have looked good in at 20, 30 or any age so why has it taken me so long ?
Audrey, your style has become so much more refined these past 2 years. I really love how you thoughtfully explored your silhouette and colors. I am so glad you dropped the restricted wardrobe mentality. I have clothes from as far back as 2 decades ago. I am SO GLAD I didn't ditch my "old" clothes. Consequently, I am approaching my wardrobe with interest and curiosity... How do I make this work? I see something someone is wearing (often on Pinterest) and realize that I have comparable items or can use the tweak to style my own outfit. You and Alyssa Beltempo have really inspired me, as well. Thank you!
I appreciate this! After watching countless fashion style and wardrobe videos over the past three years, this is what I have figured out… First, you need to research and find the things that look great on your frame, and suit your personality. Basically, where are the things that you feel amazing in. Secondly, I really don’t believe in spending a ton of money on one piece of clothing unless it’s something that is super super consistent throughout the years in your life, maybe la blazer. Because sometimes, or usually, our style changes… or a trend that appears really appeals to us that we incorporate. That leads me to number three, which is our styles do change, and I understand the tension of fashion UA-camrs to be bringing new things and thinking of new things to show us and teach us, but really, we can spend too much time over thinking our wardrobes. I used to get caught up in the capsule wardrobe, all the different things that would come out each month from fashion UA-camrs. I have appreciated a lot of the advice, but when it all comes down to it, you just need to find what looks great on your figure, you feel fabulous in, and I don’t think you should spend a ton of money on clothing that you may not wear in a few years. Give yourself freedom to enjoy your wardrobe!
Yes, I don't get buying a really expensive piece of anything to last 10-20 years. There is pretty much NOTHING that I want to last that long. Perhaps you're working in a major city's law and finance district and you must dress conservatively, but you'll still want a new suit or two every year. And as for tees and blouses, I don't know anyone who doesn't want a bit of a collection in colors and prints. And truthfully, I also don't believe that most hugely expensive items are particularly notable while being worn. I have seen many a costly blouse that doesn't look one bit "better" or classier than what can often be bought at Penney's or Macy's. It's only my opinion, but I think the prevailing idea that only high priced designer goods show that you're classy is a major hoax.
I have tee shirts that I bought from Old Navy about 20 years ago now (the quality at ON is not what it was) I have a drawer of ON tanks & tees that are at least 10 years old. When the white ones start looking dingey I soak em in Oxyclean & they look fine. I used to watch a certain fashion UA-camr who gave advice to mature women until she tried shilling a plain white tee that cost $95. Her idea of an affordable dupe was a $1,500 jacket instead of a $5,000 jacket. She also never featured clothes that went beyond size L/14 or XL. I unsubscribed from her rather quickly.
I've been waiting for someone to bring up this topic. The do's and don'ts started to wear on me. I don't declutter after a year anymore. Some things are timeless so I keep them. I watch suggestions but go with my own freedom of choice and comfort zone. Great topic!
I love that you're throwing out someone else's rules and going by what you like. I went through the same aha moment sometime during my 40s. Very liberating.
What I love so much about you, Audrey, is that you are so humble and you don’t mind talking about the changes in your journey. I feel that, for the most part, we have a very supportive community here where we won’t be judged and shamed for our clothing choices and where we can learn from each other and experiment with different fashion choices we might not have thought of. At 55, I still am on the minimalising train. I love the idea of a small mix and match wardrobe…..but that’s for me. Not everyone is the same, thank God!
Hi Audrey! Your videos are such an inspiration for me. I moved to a warmer climate about a year and a half ago and was struggling because it was too warm to wear some of the clothes that I loved. Because of this, I didn’t feel like myself anymore. In watching your videos, I’ve made changes to my wardrobe, still wearing my style staples like blazers but in more breathable fabrics and less fitted cuts that are still timeless. You’ve taught me that style is definitely a journey and will continue to evolve as I evolve or my lifestyle changes. Thank you so much for all of your advice!
.....thank you for this video.... I have NOT EVER subscribed to " get rid of something if you haven't worn it in a year , " EVER. This does limit one's ability to have on hand certain items that you can utilize, even if it's not been worn or used in a while. I have a nice pair of purple suede pumps... they go with a purple Suede fringed gorgeous jacket... I don't wear them a lot, but I'm not getting rid of those pumps ! They are classic design, and I wear them with certain things. Same with my " dressy dresses". Just because those aren't worn " all the time " does not mean I'm getting them out of my closet. I have certain dresses that I love, I've had them for over 12 years, they still fit, still look great fabric- wise , and that's that. Lol. I do go through my closet once a year. I just packed up 5 boxes of clothing, with purses, and shoes, to donate to the Women's Shelter. So I do " get rid of things,", but it's on what I decide stays .... not anyone else. 😉🙂😊
I own half a dozen striped, poly-cotton shirts, all in the same style. I bought one in each available colourway and I've had them for at least thirty-five years. I've cycled them in and out of my current wardrobe many times over the years. I didn't wear them for a long time after I gained weight, but I'm glad to say that I can wear them again now. They still wash and iron beautifully and they weren't even expensive - I bought them at the Tesco supermarket. In my book, breaking 'the rules' really does pay off.
I like the idea of having several shirts of the same style in different colors. When you find an item you like, get it in many colors. I have some long-sleeved and short-sleeved T-shirts in the basic colors: black, white, and navy. I realized I needed T-shirts so I binged on them - now I don't have to think about that anymore. I do that often.
Love this video and agree with everything. I've never followed the rule that if you haven't worn something in one year, get rid of it. (Who came up with this anyway? It's as silly as the rule a woman should keep her hair short after a certain age!) I too think one year is not long enough. I've pulled out clothes I haven't worn in a few years and felt excited to start wearing them again and so glad I held on to them. Thank you for a great video Audrey 😊
I so appreciated this content. I grew up with a very controlling mother. Clothing & food were two of her biggest “tools” to control us. Now I’m 51, my body is changing, but I’m also feeling more freedom and confidence than I ever have in my life. The last thing I need is more rules. Thank you for these insights. 🙏🏼❤️
Yes! Clothes and food. At 67, I've been struggling to completely free myself of my mother's dictates, but it's still difficult. I find myself doing things due to that early training without thinking about it. Like, she never allowed me to wear clothes when they were new. Which was especially impractical when I was a growing child since my new clothes were often too small by the time she let me wear them. My husband still doesn't understand why I don't wear my clothes as soon as I buy them, but I've made a conscious effort recently to wear my new clothes immediately. Maybe I'll get to the point where it doesn't feel wrong in the next 10 or 20 years.
Wow. I totally get this. Thank you for sharing your experience. It’s helpful to know that I’m not alone in struggling with these kinds of issues. We are in it together. ✨💕
This was such a freeing message. I'd love to hear you share about the "only wear your colour palette" rule.. For instance, I'm a warm neutral and white isn't my best... but I love white in the summer. Maybe a "how to" on breaking/bending the colour rules ;)
This is by far one of your best videos. Please don't take this in a condescending way...I feel like you are finally seeing things through more life experienced eyes...very refreshing!
This is very refreshing to hear you say this. IMO one can't find one's style if there are rules, fashion and style are what each individual does to make it their own.
I’ve learned the hard way not to get rid of items that are made of good quality. They seem to be more and more difficult to find these days. If they are classic and they fit well, I put them in a certain section of my closet. I also agree that it’s not a good idea to get rid of things just to buy new things. Now I only buy some thing if I really like it and I am willing to live with it for a long time. This cuts down on waist and needless spending. it also forces me to buy things that are quality made.
I too like the look of my mid wash denim. There is something comforting about the color, even though darker definitely looks slimmer. I think we do have to see what looks good on us personally, not just what is in fashion. For me, pleated anything is a no no. Skirts, pants, just make me look dumpy and add weight to the tummy area. However a nice, slim A-line does wonders. I also think you are spot on about the white tee shirt. I drip way too much stuff on my front to have a $200 tee shirt. If a spot won't come off, out it goes! These are really helpful tips Audrey!
Thanks for sharing! I definitely have special pieces I haven't worn in two years but love!!! Some of my favorite pieces are pieces I plan to keep forever!
Good morning Audrey. I almost didn’t click on your video because I thought it was going to be another, “you can wear white after Labor Day.” But as usual your content is always spot on. You actually said things I’ve thought but didn’t put into words or thought inside I was wrong for wanting four white blouses but in different styles. Thank you. By the way, you look beautiful. xo, Cowgirl Deb
Oh I really love how you refer to outfits as "stories" and our personal style as a "journey." This really resonates with me, as I love to think of curating a wardrobe as more art than just trend-following.
Love this! I've freed myself from 'baggy is bad' and having to wear something that flatters my body ALL the time. Sometimes a cozy jumper over relaxed jeans is cute, soft and feminine
Yes, great video. I am sure you could do a part two. One that I was always told by my grandmother was no white pants after Labor Day or before Memorial Day. Thankfully I no longer even remotely follow that rule, and I love my white jeans year round.
Thank you Audrey, I thought that I was stubborn because I don't want to do exactly what I heard or see ,I take ideas and I do whatever works for me. Watching your videos I have learned so much about many practical little things, and love to knowing that not always I'm wrong!!
I absolutely agree Audrey! 🙌🙌🤗😘 Classic pieces slow fashion and dress for yourself/body type and colour that suits your skin tone! I love your videos Audrey ♥️it’s a master class and a calming meditation all in one! Thank you so much! 😘🙌🤗♥️🙏🌍
Audrey this video is my favorite of all the ones you’ve done! You said so many things that I have secretly done/believed for YEARS while trying to be hip and fashionable at the same time!! I love my own style and sometimes I feel sorry for my clothes if I don’t get to wear them! But that whole “you must have a crisp white shirt and a navy blazer blah blah blah” OMG. Not me! (I do have white shirts and navy blazers - but as you said - personalized! Even the raincoat! It’s “me.”) I love hearing a fashion UA-camr support me, even though you don’t even know me!!
I cannot imagine my wardrobe with only one white shirt! I have four that all serve unique purposes for me. One very formal, custom fitted shirt that I reserve for weddings, funerals, and the like. A fitted thin poplin option that is perfect for layering under sweaters or blazers. A thicker, looser cotton shirt for everyday with jeans or trousers... certainly my most worn item in my wardrobe. Lastly, an oversized white linen shirt. Perfect for beach days, or for throwing over shorts and sandals for the southern CA summers.
After one mild winter I realized I hadn’t worn my heavy wool pants at all and realized it would be silly to get rid of them using the one year rule because the following winter could be bitter.
Great tips! It affirms the transitions we go through when developing style. I used to think I had to “dress like a grown up” and not wear fun colors or silhouettes. And I go through from time to time that 35 year old don’t own a stack of Simpsons shirts, bright handbags, or glitter. But I threw that notion away when I was more myself and was more social when I let the “grown up” aesthetic go. Now my closet is full of fun and color and is unapologetic. Because life is too short for bad style!
Could you do another video about upcoming trends and which ones you’d be interested in? I remember you made one ages ago and sure enough, about 5 months to a year after your video I saw some of those things become mainstream trends! So interesting.
Excellent video Audrey! It just so happens that I’ve been thinking the same thoughts about leggings and discarding perfectly good clothes after a year!! I will listen to your advice over anyone else’s from now on.
I definitely purchase certain items in different cuts. I love black and own all kinds of black tops, pants, & dresses. The rule I break is, "Don't buy the same piece in every color." While I don't purchase them in every color, I certainly buy them in my favorite colors. I should add that I'm talking about basics- tees mostly.
This is the second video of yours that I’ve watched and so far I’ve really enjoyed them. I really want a classic and timeless wardrobe, but I struggle with putting pieces together so I end up just wearing jeans and a black shirt. Your voice is also very calming!
Oh my! You hit on several key points that I totally agreed with! Closet cleanups need to be done carefully and thoughtfully… I have gotten rid of so many pieces that I loved but fortunately I did keep several that I still love and wear over 25 years later. Totally agree on the dark denim! I like it but I find that I reach for medium wash more often. Of course I decluttered my favorite medium wash jeans … only to buy them used 6 months later 😔. Please, yes, to a part two (and three)! 💚💚💚
Thank you Audrey.Totally agreed and always followed the NOT "decluttering" rule as we would have to replace garments, just a waste of money and time! Cheers
I think your ideas are great and very worthy. I have never had a capsule wardrobe as such, never will. Because, I learnt from a very frugal mother to do the following, shop for a few classics for super good wear, op shop if you can for most things, you don’t need too much…except for underwear and shoes, buy these good quality and new. And sew anything that you need for an event. Her advice has stood me in good stead. Do I break her rules, of course I do. Was she always right. Most times but not always. I studied fashion, learnt new rules and discarded them quickly as I hate fast fashion lifestyles. The thing I loved the most about this video is that you now have more than one piece of each type of clothing. We are women. We love to look our best. We have bents and whims, we need variety and dare I say it, actually a small volume of items to mix it up with. it all adds to our charisma and charm. It’s time we talked about multiple capsules types within our wardrobe. You see I have different ‘mood looks’ each a capsule in itself if you like in my wardrobe. Romantic floaty clothes, serious tailored clothing, edgy clothes etc. It makes for a balanced way for me to manage all those different ways I feel about myself on any given day. I can be all the facets of myself that I truly am because my wardrobe is flexible enough to allow that to happen. You have highlighted to me the joy of mixing it up. Thank you so for sharing.
I love this. As I grow older “fashion rules” become less important. I really enjoy dressing up but I also want to just have fun sometimes, so I’m starting to wear more colors, more prints, more leggings… I love it!
Thanks always for sharing your styling progress! My standards have also changed as my life changes. But I've never adhered to the "one year" rule 😳; I still wear items that are older than many of my coworkers! 😄 I have 4 items that my mother wore in the 60s which I still wear today! On the other hand I can't let the "belt loop" rule go! I think that if the garment has belt loops it was *designed* to be worn with a belt! 😄 And I find that garments with loops look better with belts. Love all of your other revelations!
My body shape doesn't suit having my line broken with a belt - I look far more 'put together' without. But I'm envious of people who can tuck in and wear belts 😊
I love it! You break the rules for the better. I been told, and have picked it up somewhere that plus size women should not wear white, or light colors. Stay away from stripes, prints and patterns. Rules, rules, rules… I believe they might help at some point. But if you like a pretty vertical striped top, or a nice lace white blouse you should wear it. And I decided to try it. Be a free spirit life is to be enjoyed.
Great insight. Also I feel individual style just changes and matures over time. Once someone is comfortable in their own style (after searching for what that actually is) it makes one appreciate this direction so much more. Thanks as always, Audrey!
Great to hear from you again, Audrey. Personalizing my style took time. I believed so many of the “dressing rules” for quite a while. Now, I dress for myself and feel more a ease in my skin.
So Happy you bring up the one year rule! I have cloths I have had for many, many years and like you say about your mum, they recykle in and out of my warderobe. The only thing I regret is the long coat in wool camel coloured that I gave away many years ago after listening to someone saying you shouldn’t hang on to things… If you want to live an environmenal friendly way. Use you cloths over and over and don’t get rid of it intill it can’t serve you in any way… 🍀❤️
You helped me have more freedom in my wardrobe. You are definitely right about getting rid of pieces You haven't worn in a year. And I love the idea of more than one white blouse.
I really enjoyed this video! The fact that your outfit served as a visual representation of most of the points discussed… and was amazing…tells me that’s why I enjoy her content.! Informative…well thought out…and current with where you are! Hope all is well! 💕
There is this one thing that I really like about you: it's been two years that I've been watching your channel and I like that you evolve and you share. Many people think that what they thought and did as teens is good for the rest of their lives and they stick with it. I believe that they are afraid of changing, but everything changes around us. I think that this makes you really different from what I see around! Keep up the good work and keep evolving! Thank you
Lovely video as always thank u ❤️ My favourite part of an outfit has always been the jewellery & bag. So I edited most of my clothes to mostly plain basics, so that my favourites get to shine! I dont follow any rules anymore & simply ask myself, what clothes can I wear today to go with this beautiful bag or jewellery! Makes me happy & i figure thats all that matters right?
Your videos are a joy to watch. Your calm and kind voice is music to my ears! God bless you. I love your white blouses-so pretty and feminine. Love your style!
I absolutely agree, Audrey ! I like To find inspiration in how to dress with class, etc.... but also, I like to express in my clothes, what I am inside.....
I I recently bought a pre-loved designer handbag. The bag was from a ‘few seasons ago’ and I could not care less. I wear it with pride. I don’t care about what’s ‘in’ at the moment. I’ve noticed there is so much snobbery in the fashion world. I’ve had to learn to wear what I love and not follow strict rules dictated by so called fashion experts. 😇🥰
This is so true. I have a medium tan skintone and I was always encouraged to wear bright, contrasting colours to complement my brown skin. While I do agree it works, I have started to tone down the contrast, especially on days when I don't wanna stand out so much. So green with blue, orange with tan are some new combinations I'm tapping into. Also looking forward to add more grey in my wardrobe, as I really enjoyed wearing it with orange and red during Christmas. Basically I am opening my eyes to newer combinations - they still look classy and complement my skintone.
I think I have a similar skin tone to yours, please look into creams, ivory and they also work very beautifully with our skin tone and you will be distinguished without feeling over the top
@@sl8605 most colours do. However pastels are a tricky territory for me. Peach can sometimes wash me out, at other times in pictures it looks merged with my skintone. Sky blue is a hit or miss too. My parents always told me that everyone can wear any colour they like - they just gotta find their right shade. I personally enjoy rich, autumn shades. Navy or inky blue paired with a maroon red is my go to colour combination.
I read an article about colors and skin tones. I was surprised to read that white actually better suits fair and light skin tones while black and brown skin tones are looks best in black rather than white. It is not about a contrast but what compliments your skin tone. And I noticed that my white skin looks better in white t shirts than black. While black do creates a contrast on my skin but if I don't feel my best I can easily ger asked if I am sick. Black can wash me out, Blake Lively looks best in colors, but not in black, she looks washed out. Then you need to look at your skin tone if it is cool, warm or neutral and to try pieces of different shades. I also got the nost compliments when I loved color and cloth I was wearing, I radiate differently maybe
Love this video. And I appreciate the comment about policing others' fashion & bodies. Fashion rules can have a lot of built-in problematic stuff (sizeism, ageism, sexism, racism, classism, Westernism, etc) so it's worth teasing apart the difference between a helpful rule of thumb vs policing or shaming.
Love your videos. I finally realized that the Classic White Button Down Shirt That makes every “Must Have” list just does not work for me or my style. I have purchased and gotten rid of more than I care to admit simply because I felt like all the articles said I “had to have” one. Thank you breaking that myth!
I love this video! The year rule used to work for me so I wouldn’t hoard haha but like you said, I realized it’s more based on whether I love something/if it makes me feel good and that keeps my closet so much more manageable!
Thank you for this video! It’s always a pleasure to hear you. Decluttering is good and I think necessary from time to time, but archiving (if you have room for that) can be an even better option! Why buy something again because it’s back in fashion when you have « the real thing »? Plus my mom regrets getting rid of some pairs of shoes, thinking she would be able to afford/find the same quality later. Some things that were affordable at some point are much more expensive today (when they exist!) So that’s something I keep in mind now. Is it well made, a durable and/or precious fabric? Was it a lucky find? Does it suit me well? If so, I store it for later. Also, a lot of work goes into quality garments, from the materials to the finished products. Unless I know it’ll get used by someone, I’d rather keep it and give it a full life 😂 even if that means a break from time to time…
My take away from the video is “how I want to represent myself!” I think this is the most important thing. We can have an overall theme or style that we can have. But functionality is also key along with what you love
I would also like to hear about your hair styling journey. I have been trying to fully embrace my natural 2c but I find it restrictive to only do one thing and never use a styling tool again 🙂 Your opinion and thoughts would be very interesting! Thank you!
I love this! I’ve been feeling exactly the same things! Please do share if you have more. With leggings, I’ve found that buying really good quality, and not wearing them super tight makes all the difference. Really liked the example photos you showed. I could never get into the capsule wardrobe myself, as I needed more variety, and finally relaxing into understanding that this is how I like to express myself was so freeing! Thanks for this, Audrey, I enjoyed it so much!
My #1 reason for hanging on longer than a year: colors cycle in and out. My fabulous teals, corals, and straw yellows aren't always available. If the fit is good and the style isn't too trendy I hang on!
This was a breath of fresh air Audrey. I couldn't agree more with your opinion on this subject. Thank you for your wonderful advice/videos as always 💕😊
I love this!
And don't forget the white shoes whenever you want to wear them, whether it's after Labor Day _or not!_
I have a white pair of denim jeans that I love ❤️ to wear during the summer.
@@phalynwilliams4119 you can wear those white jeans in the winter time too, if you want! 😊
@@Lavenderrose73 , thanks
I have many silk blouses and 5 silk smooth knit tops that I have owned and worn for 25 years. They are definitely worth keeping as their quality is so superior to what is on the market now.
How do you wash/care for them?
@@ElementalWhispers most require dry cleaning. Some are washable. If they require dry cleaning, I purchase an in home kit by woolite so I don’t have to pay up the wazoo at a cleaner’s. If they’re washable, I hand wash them (or put them in a delicates bag and cycle in the washer on delicate) and line dry.
Also keep in mind that you can wear silks multiple times before you need to wash them, so it’s better to stretch out their wash cycle because doing it too often can decrease their longevity.
@@BubblyViolin11 Thank you! It was the dry cleaning that's put me off buying silk. I didn't know you could buy home kits!
I am starting to see repetitions in these blogs from "fashion influencers" U see one, you have seen them all.
I hear you Cindy💁🏻♀️🇨🇦 Im now reaching for my whites any time of the year!
Good for you Cindy
Same! I bought a pair of large and heavy white pants. Love them!
Same! Never understood that 😂
I like this topic.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Loved "Life is too short not to wear color!" I really hate the "all neutral" trend that has been going on for ages!
I love colour! When I wear it, I find I get many comments and it seems to bring others joy as well.
@@e.smeltzer9286 Amen! I get soooo many compliments with color!
It seems to be a trend to no longer follow trends - if you like the thing, wear the thing. This is a trend I can get behind ❤️
Crocheted vests etc are the latest fashion items, if you have a grand daughter it may go missing. if not wear it yourself. Crochet is back.
I have tons of belts. I like to drag them out every chance I get.
Lately, I've been wanting to expand my use of stunning corporate 🏢 & church gear💒 I've collected over the years to suit other instances, but I also appreciate keeping some items strictly for more special occasion use to maintain their air of ✨️mystery & drama✨️
I've also gone up ⬆️ & down⬇️ in weight as well as 💲financial circumstances.

That’s my uniform
I love everything about your channel, I always learn something new from you , thank you 😘
I found this true as well! I started dressing in a way that wasn’t even me when I started watching all the capsule content! Finding my way back…
Hello Audrey!
Guidelines are so useful when building a wardrobe and being authentic gives personality, thanks for your great view.
This applies also with the “how to” wear, especially with tucking in! The huge variety in our bodies means there can be no singular rule. Such rules often impact harshly on larger ladies so it’s great to revisit all the ‘rules’. ❤️
This black top that you are wearing is SO nice!
True that
@@ukrofinn1281 yes tunic with pants looks so cool! Along with a dupatta (long scarf).
Exactly. I mean Indian style is also constantly changing with the times. Who's to say it's "old fashioned"...by that logic dresses are old fashioned since Western women wore them for centuries lol
Audrey, if you would write a book I would immediately buy it! ❤️
Oh and she should record the audiobook version 🥰
I have a 70's shirt with bright pink flowers that belonged to my grandmother. It represents Juliette, my French grandma. I will always keep it.
Beautifully put. I love your new approach :+)
I also learned that being judgmental made me criticize myself more harshly. The more I accepted others, the more I accepted myself. I wish someone had told me this when I was younger.
@@BbGun-lw5vi I wish I had been told that too. But we know now and that's the important thing 💗
@@annesullivan7553 they make me dizzy. 😁
It’s also been proven that the reverse can be true with stripes’
The great tragedy of my life is that now I’m 80 I’ve finally decided what suits me and exactly the look the I aspire to . It’s a look I could have looked good in at 20, 30 or any age so why has it taken me so long ?
I’m 68 and still don’t know what looks good on me, if anything, lol. Your post gives me hope!!!!
What did you decide looks good on you?
Enjoy the time while you have it! Make the most of every look every day 😊💕
If that’s the great tragedy then you’ve had a pretty good life.
If that's your greatest tragedy in life, then consider yourself extremely fortunate. 🙄
Thank you!
Yes, Alyssa, too, is a great inspiration!
@@kauffrau6764 I totally agree. Stocking up when you find something that works saves time and effort.
Ikr? As someone once said, that rule must have been invented by the fashion industry to make us buy the same clothes over and over again!
So nice to hear that you have freed yourself from strict rules.
This was such a freeing message. I'd love to hear you share about the "only wear your colour palette" rule.. For instance, I'm a warm neutral and white isn't my best... but I love white in the summer. Maybe a "how to" on breaking/bending the colour rules ;)
This would be a really helpful video. Great suggestion!
There is a specific white out there for everyone ( there are more than 100 shades of white!)! Cool whites, warm whites- you get the idea :)
I'd love to see an updated beauty/makeup video from you Audrey! Your everyday look is lovely x
Also, not everything has to be cropped!
Excellent advice. I’m still working on the belt loop issue….
Classic pieces slow fashion and dress for yourself/body type and colour that suits your skin tone!
Exactly, not every color, but why not in all your favorite colors?
Me too! When I like the style I buy a sensible colour (black/white/grey) and a fun colour.
I just tuck my top in and blouse it over the waistband so the belt loops don’t show. Blazer over the top - ready for work!
My body shape doesn't suit having my line broken with a belt - I look far more 'put together' without. But I'm envious of people who can tuck in and wear belts 😊
Love this video 😊
The belt thing... I used to have soo many and only ever wore one for one jeans only.
You have such a nice calming voice.
Its important to evolve. Thanks for sharing your process.
Nice advice! And your energy is so soothing. Thank you for your content!
You are lucky. With your color of skintone every color looks great.
I only had one dressing rule when I was younger: Don't wear blue jeans with a blue shirt. Now, that's one of my favorite looks. 😂
I appreciate your discovery and growing with change.
Unless I know it’ll get used by someone, I’d rather keep it and give it a full life 😂 even if that means a break from time to time…
Yes I would definitely like more videos like this! It’s nice to know that we can free ourselves from those fashion chains
Thank you!
p
I love your calming presentation and information. Thank you
I love this!
Exactly! My best colours are slightly muted jewel tones so when they're in fashion I stock up.
Great tips ❤️ Ive learned that my outfits look a lot more effortless when I don’t add a belt 😍
So happy you are feeling more self express on your outfits
This was a breath of fresh air Audrey. I couldn't agree more with your opinion on this subject. Thank you for your wonderful advice/videos as always 💕😊
