Beauty is in the eye of the beholder Alex, I’ve been playing an earlier version of these for several years and they transformed my game. I’m 75 and a very average golfer, in my opinion they are made for folks just like me and perhaps a lot younger. And sorry but I love the look of them!!
If they’re legal and they work, who the eff cares? Aren’t we playing golf to reduce the number of shots it takes for us to get round 18 holes? If the priority is different, someone please explain……
Had my leg amputated 7 years ago, tried to get back into golf again and could not hit a ball at all , spoke to a friend who is a pro and he borrowed a set of these from a member and gave me a lesson, went straight on ebay and bought a set of the iron and my game is better then ever, have even bought the driver and fairway woods as well.
I'm 83 and love my 3yr old Halos. My ball striking has improved and scored my age 4 times this year. Three of my golf buddies have just switched to Halos. At our age, who cares what they look like if they help your game.
There are golfers who care far more about what they and their kit look like than how well they play. More posers than golfers if you ask me. The pro at my club has a bag of mixed clubs of all ages and pedigrees and he uses whatever suits him. Stick to what gives you the best experience and you are a winner every time.
I have a new set of these. Been using for a month now. I LOVE THEM! They have improved my game so much! I use to do I everything I could to avoid having to hit an iron. Now, I'm excited at every shot opportunity I get to use one. My Son said to me, "Dad, you are actually golfing" and "hitting golf shots". I'm so thankful for what Cleveland produced. I'm 51 and couldn't be happier with my UGLY purchase! :)
I use the hibore turbos, since I bought them handicap has gone from 12 to 5, if you're not using the most forgiving clubs then you are costing yourself shots every round. To me my hibores are beautiful
I play to a 9 and have the Halo irons from a few years ago. Misses stay in play and save me from myself. To me, beauty is as beauty does. My Cobra forged tecs were prettier, but these are more effective.
Alex, we’re talking about us regular players! Like a woman it might not be the prettiest but is it nice, fun to play with and can it cook. It will last longer than a beautiful blade that treats you like 💩.
As soon as I can’t generate enough speed to get my Mizuno’s to work a set like these will go in the bag. It’s about helping people keep playing and enjoying the game. No one who’s gaming these is trying to turn pro or even win the club championships. It’s just about keeping you in the game imo.
Agreed. I play golf to have fun with my friends, not to compete in high stakes pro championships. If there is a set of clubs that helps us regular golfers to enjoy the game more and make things easier, I'm all for it regardless of looks or lesser ability to shape shots like a pro.
Speak for yourself. I may be a disabled golfer but I am still threatening to break 80 on 6000 yard courses and contending in club competitions and matchplay. Never, ever, ever give up!
A driver is a bloody huge bit of kit , we don't seem to have a problem with them or fairway woods . Beauty is in the eye of the beholder . Clubs are a tool not art objects . If they were we would all be playing with blades .
Alex, I reckon the players these clubs are aimed at couldn't give a fig whether you can shape shots with them just that you can get some distance and keep them 8n play
As a newer golfer (maybe 50 rounds), who is still trying to make contact, I'd play them. You say it's ugly. I say, if it's easy to hit, give me a set. I don't give a rat's rectum what anyone thinks of my clubs. I love your videos, keep'em coming! But don't be a golf snob: fat, chunky, and ugly clubs need love too! 🤣🤪🤣🤪 If you no longer need or want the club, send it to me... please!
Back in the 17th century, 2 Englishmen, John Stuart Mill and Jeremy Bentham, formulated a philosophy called Utilitarianism: that is, an object or process should be judged by how useful it is. Personally, I ascribe to this philosophy and I use the Wilson LP2 irons which are quite similar to these Clevelands and give me a better game than my old MacGregor Tourneys ever did. So, use what works best for you and that will make it beautiful to you.
I actually used these for a couple months. The only thing I disliked was the heft. It was quite heavy. But if you are a bump and run player - these clubs rock and roll in the bump and run.
I'm in my late 70's, and the proud/happy owner of a set of these Halo XL irons. I'm having fun out on the course again. Thanks for the post facto testing 👍
I have a set of Cleveland Launcher XL Halo in my bag and love them had earlier sets as well tried other brands but keep going back to Clevelands , also you should test the out the Cleveland Launcher Hy-Wood +3 its a cross between a fairway wood and a Hibrid great club
I just purchased a set of the Cobra T Rails after debating between those and the Clevelands. Price ended up being the deciding factor for me, but I liked the look of the Clevelands a lot
I am 78 and looking to buy a hybrid set this spring. I've played ping i2's for 20+ years so obviously do not care about looks. Please test the Lazrus hybrids to compare. Their wedges have gotten terrific reviews around the net. Keep up the great work.
I'm 83 and have always played Titleist or Ping irons but my ball; striking has not been great. I've been playing Halo's for 3yrs and love them. I beat my age by 2 strokes yesterday on Cape Cod and now 3 of my golf buddies have recently switched to Halos.
Cleveland was never shy about making clubs with a totally different look. Do you remember the VAS 792's from the 90's? As for the rough texture carrying over from the face to the top line it's probably to avoid glare and reflections from that wide top line.
I still have a set of the 792s in my garage along with a set of L'il David Slingers. (Anyone remember those?) 2 of the weirdest irons ever. The 792s worked well for my son but he hasn't played them in over 25 years.
I carry a Cobra T-Rail 5 iron for out of the rough. My set of callaway is 6 through GW. The extra weight and rails help so much when the drive doesn't find the fairway and I still have 200 plus left out of the rough.
The beauty about these types of irons from Cleveland (ever since first generation) is that they play like normal irons. No mega high flight, no mega low spin. They are only easier to hit.
Lazrus Fairway woods. I would like to see you opinion on those and maybe compared to the Halo you just hit. Love your channels. I watch yours before any one else.
I love my Halo XL's! I have arthritis in my left hand and after hitting most clubs, my hand hurts a lot. But with my Halo's, I can play 18 holes with no pain afterwards.
I was given a 7 & 9 Cleveland Hibore irons. Easy launch, straight shots and much less chunking and digging than using conventional irons. If you sweep more than pick your iron shots, these could work well for you.
the rails are a knock off of the Cobra T rail (only 2 rails on the Cobra) which help with the interaction between the club head and the turf, and as a senior golfer (75) are great for me!
Hi Alex! Love the video! How about the Tour Edge lineups? Their HL irons line up isn’t particularly attractive but would love to see what you think of them.
I like how the sound is different. The reason the back of the club is black...when you look down at the club plus the back disappears. The mind only sees the top shiny edge. I believe this type of club has helped me as I have gotten older. I'm 75yrs
I own an earlier set too. Love them. They are great for Simone who can't put hours of practice in but still wants to play well. Most of the guys in our league should be playing these. 😊
A year ago I bought the XL Halo model before the one you tested. As a low handicap golfer in my mid-70s my decreasing swing speed needed some help. I did test them (and competitor offerings) thoroughly. Like you, what impressed me was the ability to play a variety of shots, and surprised how easy it was to hit low ones. Equally, I thought normal shots might be a bit higher. I agree that sound & looks are both ugly but feel isn't too bad. Anyway, who cares about the derision of friends - they're just mad they lost their money 😂
This week's amateur golf tips: A golf match is a test of your skill against your opponent's luck. Golf is the perfect thing to do on Sunday because you spend longer praying than you would do in church And there's lots more - so you'd better not ask 😂
I play Tour Edge clubs very much like these …I like the sound and feel, the trajectory , distance, and accuracy appear to be better than my cavity back Wilson’s of many years…but at age 65 , I needed new tech help.
I just order a set of these as my irons that are 20 plus years old started breaking. I cannot wait to try them. I do not think they are ugly. They are different but I would not say ugly.
Alex, my teacher told me to use the white lines to make sure the club is square. Put the club down behind the ball, then stand up straight and bring your arms up so the head is in front of your chest. The white lines should point straight up if you are”square”
The white lines are for alignment. Most game improvement irons have them. Clubs aimed at professionals (blades for example) might not have them. My Rogue ST Max irons have them, but the ST Pros do not.
Hey Alex. What about comparing these new Cleveland to last years or the year before? This would help those of us on a budget whether they are worth $1200 Cdn verse $600 ?
I currently am playing the stealth irons with graphite shafts and like them alot but i am 59 years old and father time is creeping in I am a 7 handicap and am very intrigued on these irons i think they might just be what i need in my senior years my driver swing speed is 90-94 mph but i swing my 7 iron around 77-80 mph what are your thoughts on this great review by the way cheers from Vulcan Canada
First, the bottom of the XLs look like a direct copy of the Cobra T Rails (or maybe vice versa) Secondly, they are not really ugly just a bit chunky - bit like me so I may be biased!!. The irons which were truly ugly were, as others have mentioned, the Cleveland VAS irons and slightly more recently, the Taylor Made MCGB. Finally, these clubs are not really designed for higher swing speed players but for a more senior golfer who is losing some club speed they are pretty good
The Clevelands hit the market before the T-Rails were introduced. Now you've got Cleveland, Cobra, Wilson, Tour Edge, and some smaller companies to choose this type of club from.
Last week I tested the halo against the zipcore. The halo went further with less of a lateral dispersion. My swing speed is 70 mph I carried 84 metres . No idea whether this is good. My previous 7 carried 69 metres. I am a happy little Vegemite.
Alex, two things. First, every time I hear a club on any video that I have watched, they all sound the same. It is just a click. Some are louder than others, but they are all just clicks on my monitor. Second, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It just looks different than other clubs. I have a set of "hybrids" that I got years ago that look almost exactly like those clubs. I couldn't hit them, so they are sitting in my graveyard of discarded clubs (my spare room). I have had and heard some terribly sounding clubs. I have a Wilson Spine driver that I used to use that sounds like you are hitting the ball with a Mason jar. It has a hollow ring to it. A friend has a PXG 211 driver that sounds the same. My PXG 811X driver sounds great.
I have last year’s model of these irons. Yes, outrageously ugly. But after you play them, they look a lot prettier. I love mine. ♥️ I like that they have full face now. Wish mine had that.
I carry about a 9 handicap, I'm 68 and I've never hit better shots since using the Halo irons the past 4 years. Yes, my ego sometimes get in my way and I start playing my TM 790's only to result in cussing out myself for the poor iron shots I hit. It comes down to this: Would you rather has ugly clubs, or would you rather have ugly shots? Seriously, I hope my friends don't start playing these Halo's, because I love taking their money!
I have a full set of the 2023 halo irons and they are the easiest to hit irons I have ever tried. I also think they look just fine. To call them ugly is really just a question of aberration of taste.
I don’t think he intends to demean anyone who plays the clubs. This video is your example of how a product can reach its intended public, if we just get over the uncommon look. Performance and the results make his reaction of the club more valid. Ugly. Large. Horrendous sound. But.. it works. Very good of this guy to display it.
I have a cheaper version, the RAM hybrid irons. Not full face, but same look. Bought from Amzn. They get great reviews from slower swing speed players and seniors like myself. I love them so far.
My swing speed is around 80 and I have 2 of these hybrids that totally amaze me with distance and I,can work the ball right or left they are great clubs
The problem with golf is you have to worry about what you look like on the course... its a giant fashion show. Personally I just want to have fun. I just started playing at 45 and these type of clubs should help me get on a course with some practice also. If someone says something I'll just say I cant hear and could you write it down on your pga tour card. People need to relax about others and just enjoy the game for what it is while playing with friends.
Nice video. However, a video comparing this year's clubs with the earlier model would have been even better, useful and informative. Also, a like-by-like comparison with some other alternatives from Wilson, Cobra, Callaway for example would make another great video. Make them as informative, long and detailed as you want. We would love it even more!
@HowGoodGolf Thank you, you're the best. I will give them a look. How often do you change irons? I have a set of Calloway RAZR XL that are at least 10 yrs. old. They are kind of like the Halo XL clubs, ugly but fit my old man swing a little better. Appreciate you helping people like me play better.
I love the look of these as I newbie I'm don't have the it should look like a blade views . If it works it works . On the plus side you can upset the older golfers as it not a proper club ...
I just bought a set of the prior generation Halos. Loving them so far! I still don’t understand the concern over appearance. The only “look” I care about is the one on the scorecard. Putters come in all shapes and sizes and no one gets in a twist over the variety of “looks”. Should reviews of putters not shaped like a blade include constant criticism of appearance?
Bought these beautiful things....couldn't stop shanking so I bought these second hand....never looked back, just had my best season after a winter of shanking hell
I am 69 and have the older version. Love them. Only negative is the black paint on the back is poor. It flakes away fast. I just repainted mine unfortunately it is chipping away.
I own a set of Cobra Transition S Hybrid Irons and I gamed them, but I also own a set of Cleveland HiBore Hybrid Irons I custom built and I am gaming a set of Cleveland Launcher HB Turbo Hybrid Irons. They are fantastic and gave me the length back I was missing with my TaylorMade Burner Plus irons. If you have had health issues like myself you will play Irons like this to keep your game up to par. I have a full shoulder reversal, been on dialysis and had a kidney transplant. My 7 iron went from 170 yards in 2013 to 147 yards present, until I changed to the hybrids and now I’ve got my distance back to almost normal. My 7 iron is now back 165ish. Give them a try.
Almost 6 minutes of talk about ugly before we find out it's a 7 iron. How about telling us the actual loft? I think too much is made about "looks" of a club for a high handicapper. If you can knock 9 strokes off your round, I guarantee you will get used to the looks.🙂
Im off 16 but should be lower....i just struggle with my 6 and 7 irons, but cream my 5 hybrid...id rather be seeing my handicap tumble with clubs I can hit than worrying about what they look like or sound like!! Golf snobbery at its best!
If people play hybrids, how would this be ugly? It’s more like a 7 hybrid that flies like and iron. Full face grooves may not be necessary. Maybe don’t need a entire set, but as long iron replacements it seems like a good option
@@HowGoodGolf Can’t wait to watch it. Been playing about 7 months, playing with some old TaylorMade rac irons and R7 quad. Feel I might need an update to improve more. And thanks for all the great tips.
They need to be viewed as hybrids , then they really aren’t that ugly. And… he calls them ugly and then puts that glove on his hand?? Remember a few years ago when nobody was playing 7 woods?
I think they look great myself but then I have always thought blades look boring and plain. To me a club is a tool and you want to use the tool that is easiest to use and gives you the best results.
I purchased only the 4 Iron, last year, to use in place of a 4 Hybrid. Your comedic snobbery notwithstanding, the club actually performs quite well. I have not warmed up to the shape of modern hybrids, which look more like mini-fairway woods, with their heads continually being stretched back (which is why they look like woods). The first hybrids that I used, back in the 1990s, were the TOUR EDGE Iron-Woods, which look similar to that Cleveland, except the back of the head was rounded out, not "pushed" in. The Ping G15 and G20 Hybrids also had that look to them. The fact that they were not commercial successes was probably due more to the fact that Tour Players didn't use them, rather than how they performed (which was simply brilliantly). Since many amateur players have trouble hitting fairway woods from the turf, I fail to understand why manufacturers would not understand that even though stretching the head back may increase MOI, the "look" of the club on the ground can cause an amateur to "freeze" up during the downswing the same way that they do with a fairway wood.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder Alex, I’ve been playing an earlier version of these for several years and they transformed my game. I’m 75 and a very average golfer, in my opinion they are made for folks just like me and perhaps a lot younger. And sorry but I love the look of them!!

Secondly, they are not really ugly just a bit chunky - bit like me so I may be biased!!.
I like that they have full face now. Wish mine had that.
I couldn’t agree more!!!
Hi, test these clubs with senior golfer with 18 h/c.
I play with a set of Cleveland HB3,s which may be 14 years old.
I am off 16.4
Rgds lester
I played these clubs for five years. I got fitted for Titleist clubs. After playing for about a year I went back to my old clubs😊
Great video Alex!
I really don't like when reviewers call clubs ugly.
I had an earlier version. The long “irons” performs ridiculously good as a medium swingspeed mid handicapper. I really miss them.
I bought a set of similar clubs recently at Walmart which I am very happy with. I dare you to give these a try. Powerbilt EX550 hybrid set
I have a cheaper version, the RAM hybrid irons. Not full face, but same look. Bought from Amzn. They get great reviews from slower swing speed players and seniors like myself. I love them so far.
Nice!! will have to have a look at those
My swing speed is around 80 and I have 2 of these hybrids that totally amaze me with distance and I,can work the ball right or left they are great clubs
I have a 9 wood then 6, 7 and 8 callaway hybrids,so i only need 9-SW with these,they dont make L wedge,i guess i just keep my 9-lob X-22s
We would love it even more!
true! great suggestion
Would like a comparison tests between these and Wilson LaunchPad 2 and Cobra T-Rails
Great suggestion
@@HowGoodGolf forgot another .. the Eleven hybrid irons .. maybe too much to compare
Do you think these would help someone with a mid handicap improve their scores? I enjoy hitting hybrids, and my swing speed is 95.
I really do yes!!!
Would you play with a shaft lean or straight?
I play all Lazarus Hybrids 3-Gap… some call ugly, but I call easier to hit!!!
How do these compare to the Eleven hybrid/irons you also reviewed?
Yeah i like them!!
Bought these beautiful things....couldn't stop shanking so I bought these second hand....never looked back, just had my best season after a winter of shanking hell
I play with big bertha b21 hybrids 5 to 8 and cobra t-rail 8 to gap wedge . best thing I've ever done
Have you tried the macgregor vmax irons yet? They are interesting also.
I am 69 and have the older version. Love them. Only negative is the black paint on the back is poor. It flakes away fast. I just repainted mine unfortunately it is chipping away.
Completely agree!
Could you test the new Cleveland XL zip CORE., - irons.
Yes 🙌🏼
Can you take a bit of a divot to get more backspin off turf ?
Yeah true!
Love my Halo set - performance and looks.
Love my Halo XL's and i don't give a carrot what other people think of them.
I’d like to see a review on the new Tour Edge Hot Launch E524 irons and compare them to these Cleveland’s.
Bulletin: I had a set of Haig Ultras in the early 70's and they had grooves just like that! These are definetly not the first!
Only problem wit those clubs is inconsistent distance. They fly 10 - 25 yard windows which makes it hard to hit greens.
Almost 6 minutes of talk about ugly before we find out it's a 7 iron. How about telling us the actual loft? I think too much is made about "looks" of a club for a high handicapper. If you can knock 9 strokes off your round, I guarantee you will get used to the looks.🙂
Well said, the guy’s a pratt!
It's 30 degrees
Got them and they are brilliant 😊
Would love to see you go old school and hit the ping g20s I think you’d be close to these…. But prefer the looks to the g20/ than these
Im off 16 but should be lower....i just struggle with my 6 and 7 irons, but cream my 5 hybrid...id rather be seeing my handicap tumble with clubs I can hit than worrying about what they look like or sound like!! Golf snobbery at its best!
Can you test the new mcgregor vmax irons? That would be interesting
“Too easy” …. Heard the woods are great !!….
Love my Halos don't care what they look like they work that's all I care about.
My friend always scores lower than me when we golf, but my clubs sound better. So in the end, we both win.
If people play hybrids, how would this be ugly? It’s more like a 7 hybrid that flies like and iron. Full face grooves may not be necessary. Maybe don’t need a entire set, but as long iron replacements it seems like a good option
What do you think of the Takomo Driver and Takomo iron line?
This is a great idea!!! I am going to try it
@@HowGoodGolf Can’t wait to watch it.
I used to play the previous version of those clubs for two years till TaylorMade came out with the Sealth HD irons.
Try and find a Cleveland monster driver, it’s old but easy to destroy drives but she is loud
