Really interesting analysis on the kick serve! I never thought about how effective kick serves are versus slice in the women's game. My most confident serve is a kick serve. I'm short and have never had a hard serve, but my kick serve is fairly consistent and I've never had a good slice serve. I've just never had a good feel for it...

Credit to both coaches points. as a recreational player with a bad shoulder, I favor my slice serve on my 2nd because it is a more consistent shot that I can hit harder and through some spin into. My kick serve tends to be too slow so I only do it if I think I can get a cheap point by giving an unusually slow serve haha

The slice second serve is used on the ATP as well, though much less often than the WTA. Karlovic, Cressy, Djokovic (kind of, his is a unique mixture of slice and kick), Nadal, Sampras (though all his serves had a ton of topspin from his body positioning). A lot of ATP players worry about double faults, and so do a safer kick serve. For serve and volley on a second serve a harder slice serve that's biting into the body or away from the player can give more easier put aways at net (at the cost of more double faults). It's hard to serve and volley nowadays with a slower kick second serve, the returns are just too good.

Totally agree. Women's tennis is big for sports. How about the concept of having a Next Gen women's version? Would it be feasible? It will be great for the sport. The past winners of Next Gen thrived immensely in the pro tour: Alcaraz, Tsitsipas, Sinner, Chung (reaching the semis of a grandslam but unfortunately got injured). I think the NextGen exposure gave them so much confidence. I wish the WTA can stage their Next Gen as well. It would be healthy for the sport. This would inspire more young girls to play the sport. And young WTA pros need a lot of support in a very tough and challenging pro tour. 💚💚💚

Correct me if I am wrong but I think the overall strength of the man allows them to handle heavier rackets and I guess also that has influence in power, control etc. The height also plays a part because the big top spin will cause more problems to women, second serves with topspin etc. I play sometimes with a high level woman (Not pro level or tour level ) She is I think better player than me, she has more variety, better technique, better shot selection etc so If I do not play with depth because I have the racket fresh stringed and Is too powerless, she can really take control on the points and win me. But when I serve good and I am playing with depth she has no chance and in clay I just need to crash the ball with heavy topspin from the baseline and she has to hit over her shoulder all the time.

I believe that kick serve is much money effective as a second serve, ball accelerates after landing and comes to you like a wave, and you cant be sure in which stage is just the rotation, so it is more difficult to finnish it, unlike slice which you have to place very well and enough hard, otherwise opponent with good shot will crush you, but kick is technically much more difficult and few recreational players know how to do that, look at Samantha Stosur, it was her best shot

If the 1000 events and the slams were mens and womens only events I believe you would see how many would show up for the events. I think they should separate the events and settle the debate. They will never do it because they know the turn outs will reflect the turn outs at the lower events. I live near Winston Salem and there is a 250 Mens event here every year. They have no trouble filling seats anytime I've been there. It is always the week before a major and most players who show are trying to get more points because the favored players for the majors are taking a week off to rest before the intense two weeks leading up to the event. Love your content and your a great player. Cheers

In a market system it doesn't matter a wit if you "feel" woman's tennis should have equal prize money or if they "deserve" it, whatever that means. It's how much revenue they can get from sponsors. Even if women played 3 out of 5 in slams, which at a minimum they should if they're going to demand equal pay, that still may not justify equal pay. Or, maybe it will, depending on viewership which dictates sponsorship, etc. As far as your comment on lower level tournaments where the women get paid much less the response is; does viewers and sponsorship warrant it? Again, it does not matter at all if you happen to like WTA or not? It's very simple, does the money coming into the match generate enough to cover ATP-type prize money. So, the biggest difference between men's and women's tennis, the title to this video, is as you said: They are two different games, they cannot be compared. Serena's coach said that outright.
I don't think it's too controversial to state that the sporting audience usually prefers to watch the athlete that is stronger, faster, more agile, etc. Just like the fastest most powerful car races are most popular. Nobody cares whose driving as long as they do it well. It's called capitalizing on excitement. That you think they should automatically get equal pay because in your opinion WTA is exciting, is irrelevant as explained above. I would think you understand this well. No matter how much content you put on UA-cam, if nobody watches it then it's subpar. But you'll may argue, I put out as many videos as others who get paid much more. I should get the same compensation. I think you get where this is going. Usually excellent content Nick! Respectfully,

Hi Nick, congrats on your content. I agree women tenis Is one of the best women sports, and one of the few sports women and men can compete with each other equally at the recreational level. But I respectfully disagree with your opinion of equal price money, though i agree with the intention behind it (equality and fairness i assume). I believe that tenis Is a beautiful Sport that makes money on Entertainment, for that reason i think it should distribute income through prize money according to how much money tenis players generate. Regardless of level or genre. Actually women could and should be paid more than men if pipl were to consume More women tenis than mens. If pipl buy tickets just to see Messi then probably Messi would earn More money than other players since he could just go to another team and make them More profitable. The seek for justice and equality Is the way to go but i think doing it by unfair compensation Is not a good strategy in the long term. Just a humble opinion, open to hearing different views and changing my mind.... Thanks and congrats again on your content.

And I feel like there’s a lot more emotion in the woman side overall and there’s more drama. I would’ve never said this year’s ago because I was always kind of embarrassed that I watched women’s tennis, I thought that everybody would make fun of me, nowadays I’m not as self-conscious so I don’t really care.

I am not politically correct at all, but tennis was co-ed from the very beginning.
The first Wimbledon championship was held in 1877 and in 1884 a women’s championship was introduced at Wimbledon.
So there is something about tennis that makes it more natural for men's and women's competitions to take place during same events.
And the women's tournament at the same event undoubtedly add to the value for spectators. Whether that is equal value is another question.

You are really wrong on the pay. In most things, people are paid what they produce. If a women's event has more revenue, then it has more to pay out in prizes. A female singer on tour, for example, earns gate minus expenses exactly the same as for a male performer. Whoever draws better and commands higher ticket prices earns more. Womens' events don't draw as strongly. Doubles' matches don't draw as strongly. Both are entertaining, but don't pay as well as mens' singles. No discrimination just economics.

    • @melfox215
      @melfox215 Рік тому

Exactly. Gymnastics came to my mind as well. It's the same in some winter sports like skating or skiing.
Professional female athletes are good in sports where they have been to for many years. It's simply that you need many athletes and youth development (training conditions, good coaches, etc.) to get a few greats. The more the better.
A good example is female soccer that is really growing worldwide, especially in Europe where it got disrespected due to its image to be a male's sport. Since like 10 years, clubs get more and more professional and so the level of female soccer is really growing. And that really helps improving the viewing rate.
Tennis has been a sport for female and male players for a very long time. The only thing to criticize is probably athleticism in professional female tennis. There should be more players moving like Swiatek or Sakkari. Many top players have a great tennis game, but a mediocre athletic level (compared to Swiatek and Sakkari). I'd like to see more female players being in top shape. That will raise the already high level even further.

Actually I believe the only argument why atp players should be still paid more than wtp is grand slams. As average time spent on course of ATP players is 3,5 hours quite often matches last 5 and 5,5 hours. While wtp grand slams matches last smth like 1,5 hours, it might be 70 minutes very often. Whereas the play in ATP is not only much longer but much more competitive and more athletic as it was stated in the video. It means atp players ruin they bodies during the matches heavier, injuries (besides heavy traumas) are faced much more often. That's why I believe that at least at Grand Slams atp players should be paid more. And the fact mentioned by Nick in the video that wtp matches get more money from sponsors and watched more should be factchecked. As I've heard several times that more people buy tickets for atp matches, as well as more atp matches broadcasted on TV are watched.

    • @PaulWolfe1

@@PaulWolfe1 is it really so? Do you ever watch tennis or visit tournament matches? If you do you know that usually there are more spectators at atp matches. Do you play tennis? If you do then you know that on average for 8 males in tennis clubs there only 2 female players. It means that among TV audience greatly prevail men too. At least at clubs in CIS countries. So where market dictates? You at least read the history of payment devision between wta/atp then you will know that tournament started paying equally in late 80s due to feminine trends for equality though tournaments got more money for male competitions.

Totally disagree. You shouldn’t compare women’s tennis to other sports you compare it with men’s tennis . It’s not just the men are better . They play more in slams and they draw more crowds . It’s not even a debate ! The equal money is given to women so we don’t have the likes of Billy Jean king moaning on forever . Of course this lady is going to agree with you , she’s a female player ! She doesn’t come up with any logical argument in response . Of course you are going to say these things because you have a viewer base to consider . That’s why we are where we are and male pundits etc are afraid to speak their mind . You also prove my point by going on to say that men get paid more than women in regular tournaments. It’s because they gain more interest. This proves they are subsidising the women in slams. I add it’s but just power that separates the men it’s touch and dexterity. Women’s game around the net is far inferior to the men’s game .
