I could only get through the intro, the first verse, and part of the chorus and even then it didn't sound that great. Meanwhile I can play Seek and Destroy easily up until the solo (not putting Metallica down, just saying.)

I think the producers of the show told the band to play a classic rock song because, in order to practice a song by Megadeth, they would've known that they would win. The producers didn't want them to tell people the results before the show.

Marty Friedman is my fav guitarist ever,and I love playing Symphony of Destruction solo on guitar and it was very hard to learn but to say playing it is harder than playing an entire 8 min song that also has a very hard solo and freaking tireless down picking and never mind that spider chord it has is just ultimate extreme level of dumbness 😑.

Honestly, from a guitar players perspective, the rhythm guitar tone sounded like they were playing with REALLY low gain/distortion compared to what one should use for a song like this. I can't figure out why they chose to play it like that. It sounds almost like a non-master volume amp or something, basically 60's and 70's style rock overdrive. Any guitar nuts here who like vintage Marshall plexis, etc. will know exactly what I mean. Also high-gain distortion makes styles like thrash metal not only sound better, but also is MUCH easier to play compared to using a vintage styled low-gain amp for this style. High-gain/distortion creates alot of sustain etc. and the physical effort of playing the guitar is much easier somehow. Also keep in mind that you can use too much distortion as well, even in metal...it's all about balance like anything else.
Most seasoned guitar players will understand what I'm saying here. By using a tone like this, right out the gate...especially to the non-guitar player, it's gonna make it sound like complete crap.

i think it's awfulness is being pretty exaggerated. you can hear two guitars - one quieter and panned to the left, and one louder panned to the right. it's the latter that's really just fucking it up for everyone. the quieter guitar on the left is doing great, doing some pretty sick solos, the drummer is hella on point too (i don't know why people are bitching about him). but that one fucking guitarist on the right, he has one fucking job - play that riff, and he still fucks it up, misses his cue in the intro too, and for some reason the mixers made him louder, so basically he ruined the whole song. for all we know, he might actually be a totally competent guitarist in other styles, but he clearly has no idea how to play metal guitar.
But now that I see it better I imagine that the band guys where like :

Yeah, and Megadeth is a Nice Band, it has got very good songs.
Stelios Kontos Dave had tons of material and was playing songs off of Peace Sells & SFSGSW under different names (Burnt Offerings = Set The World afire, Next Victim = My last words ect) in 84 well before those albums came out.
Because it wasn't just one or two songs, it was dozens, you can't fit everyone song you have on one album. Another example is the Rust in Peace demo having Chris Poland doing the solos before he was fired in 1987.
