  • JS Schooner - WOOLY TV #38 - Surfboard Review
    Wow! What a banger this one was for good quality waves!
    Wooly weighs 87kg/192lb and is 6'1"/187cm tall
    Wooly is riding a 6'3" x 19 1/2" x 2 3/4" - 34.6L
    From JS
    A HIGH-VOLUME PERFORMANCE BOARD.
    The latest and greatest in our long line of world class all-rounders, the Schooner is a high-volume performance board. Why did Mikey want to call it the Schooner? The wide point has been pushed forward, so more of the foam is at the top... Like a beer. Mikey loves beer and so do we, but the science doesn’t stop there. Like any good beverage you don’t want it too flat either - this is a performance-oriented sled after all.
    A medium curve, close to the Monsta rocker, prevents catching in critical parts of the wave, and provides the ideal balance between generating speed and maintaining control during explosive manoeuvres. This is complemented by a fuller outline, close to the Raging Bull, with a similar foil maintaining thickness in the middle, but relatively low rails. Just like our EasyRider range, this lets you ride a thicker board than usual (approx. 1/8”).
    The Schooner is built to excel in a huge variety of waves, from head high to as big as you want to take it.

    I never muck around with JS boards but damn this one looks unreal for good surf. Not much though on offer here in San Diego in the summer time haha. thanks for this one Wooly. Love your reviews, especially because I'm a bigger guy like you at 193cm at 97kgs

    Hey mate, Love the reviews! I am an intermediate surfer and have been going round and round trying to choose a good wave board. I live in Sydney but want to do a my first Fiji trip next year and don’t know if the Schooner would go better than say a Forget me not, over there? I am 178cm and 73kg. My normal short board is 5”10 at 29.5L so was thinking perhaps a 6’0 schooner? Any help would be much appreciated 🎉

    This board is epic, I whacked a set of MR power twins 2 + 1 just to loosen up that tail a tad … in love! No need for PU squash tail in my quiver - 2 boards in one with a change of fins

      @WoolyTV  11 місяців тому

    This video has got me stoked! The Schooner seems to have a quite a few characteristics with the Pyzel Ghost. Do you have any thoughts to help me compare and contrast the two board models?

    • @WoolyTV

      Hi mate,
      Ive only every had a quick surf on a Ghost but they are similar. I like the nose outline and the rail shape more on the Schooner. This board has staying in my quiver for the good days.

    Would Schooner & Gravity make a good travel pair with the big transitions in width from one surf to the next?
    What pair would u travel with?
    Thanks

    • @WoolyTV
      @WoolyTV  11 місяців тому

      Hi mate
      Yes I think they are a great travel pair. The Gravity will do from waist height to over head and where that starts to feel too small then the Schooner will take over.

    Lovin your reviews mate.
    I’m a similar size guy, 86kg 6ft3
    I’ve ordered a 6’5 schooner with the 6’4 width and thickness.
    You mentioned medium fins, I always run large.
    Would you run medium fcs if you were me? Which do you recommend.
    I normally run fanning L
    Thanks wooly in advance

      Just try a set of mediums and see how they feel for you. In most of my pintails I ride mediums because the tail shape holds you in.

    Hi Wooly, I love my 5’10 Monsta2020 easy rider, 30L. Would you recommend something about 31.5L?
    Was thinking about either 5’11 or 6’0 X
    19.5 X 2 1/2 or 2 9/16
    What do u think??
    Thank you

    • @WoolyTV
      @WoolyTV  10 місяців тому +1

      Hi mate
      You could go as small as the
      Monsta’s volume but I would probably aim for a touch more.
      Really depends on what size of waves you want to ride it in.
      For me it’s a good quality wave board so the extra length and volume is good.

    You review a lot of JS boards. What would your 3 board JS quiver be? Im in the market for one, thinking sub Xero, Xero Gravity, Schooner.

    • @WoolyTV
      @WoolyTV  3 місяці тому +1

      Ok depends on how small/big waves you want to surf.
      Absolutely the Xero Gravity.
      I would choose the Xero Fusion over the Sub Xero but only if you don’t want to super grovel, if you want to surf tiny crap then it’s the Flame Fish.
      Monsta, Schooner or FMN will depend on what size and type of waves you want to surf your step up on - pretty hard to go past the Schooner as it’s so versatile. 🤙

    Hell yeah!
    Brought this board a few months back.
    Such great fun! Took it with me to off-season indonesia 🇮🇩.
    Paddels really well as long as the waves are steep. As soon as you place your feet it knifes through everything!
    No wave too steep, no section too wide!!
    Perfect precision! It feels like a surgeon’s scalpel.
    At the same time it is very whippy or holds rail really well on drawn out turns.
    …only problem:
    Know I want the same feeling in smaller surf.
    Does anyone has a recommendation for a board that has the same knifieness while paddeling like small wave board?
    Any recommendations??
    Looking for a 5’10/5’11 that paddles well and has a thin pulled in tail with low nose, but plenty off tail rocker??

    I'm a lower intermediate(not a beginner nor ripping) 84kg, usually ride a PU holy grail 33.6L(maybe a little under volume) to 3ft. Tossing up between schooner/ghost 6'3/4 and raging bull 6'2 for good wave board 3-6ft. Leaning toward RB, Got any thoughts?

      @@WoolyTVsick review, always wondered why you hadn’t done the Raging Bull. I got a RB in PU while waiting on a custom Hyfi Monstabox roundtail and it went so good i kept it and sold the monstabox. Even like it as quad, with the pulled in tail the quad rears seem to be straightened and clustered so you have your heal and ball of your foot each over a fin which provides such an amazing mix of speed and control in a wide range of conditions. I’ve never had a bad JS, they all go sick.

      @jcmalbuquerque 9 місяців тому +2

      @WoolyTV Guess what, I was about to ask why you haven't reviewed the Raging Bull yet!
      I am 1.92m 81Kg. Because of my weight I normally use smaller boards compared to my height, but because of my height I prefer boards with the wide point forward as my stance is wider. At the moment I have a JS Red Baron 5'5" 31.3L and a JS Black Box 3 5'9" 29L. I am thinking of adding a board that would hold better on bigger surf and was considering the Raging Bull 5'10", Monsta 10 Easy rider 5'10" or even the Pyzel Shadow XL 5'10". They are all around the 29~30L range. I wish the Schooner had an easy rider version so it could pack 29~30 L in a 5'10" as well!!!
      Love your reviews BTW - they have been helping me a lot!
