Desi said once that I Love Lucy was never just a title. They really loved each other truly, you can notice and feel it.
Luana I can't see another person playing Rickys part. There s no way it would have been. They didn't want Desi Arnaz right away. The producers had to be talked to. into. No one else could be play ed him as good because he was her real husband.
Lucy & Desi weren't acting in love, it was the real thing. Lucy wanted Desi to play her husband because they wanted to be together & save their marriage. Nobody else wanted Desi because he was Cuban. Desi said on toast of the town in 1954 "If it wouldn't have been for Lucy, I would've stopped trying a long time ago."

mint Unfortunately, yes. In fact the day after the last episode aired, their divorce was advertised in the paper. Edie Adams, one of the guest stars on the last episode, recalled how high the tensions were between Lucille and Desi. She went on to say that she regretted choosing to sing “I Will Always Love You,” due to the Arnaz/Ball feud, but it was too late to pick another piece.
Well, I believe what you're saying, but too bad Ricky was a womanizer and didn't love her with a mature unselfish love. He had to go around with prostitutes and cheat on her with so many women, and to top it off he'd say "I don't know why she gets upset. They're just hookers" Well too bad I always say. I love the show and I love them as a couple. Too bad and really sad how it really ended
This scene always makes me cry because you can see the love those two had for each other. No acting required. That was genuine. Couldn't fake those emotions.
I love this. It made me so sad when I found out they divorced. This song is just so adorable.
I guess it shows that not even can save a marriage sometimes.
But they still loved each other till the end. I've been in those situations.
They couldn't be together yet they couldn't be apart.
Based on what I've read, the divorce was based in real marital issues but was also mostly for appearances. Desi's extramarital affairs were so numerous and well known by that point that it was becoming a liability for Lucy's image- as a woman who was staying with him through all of that. In reality she was having affairs herself and they continued to work together for years after their divorce. Today maybe they could have been a happily open couple.
This song and the song Ricky sings "Were having a baby" are so special to witness.
How can you not watch this and smile. Takes me back as a kid and watching this show with my mom.

I like it because it reminds me of an affectionate harm reduction activist called Lucy O'Hare who likes to use "mwah" kisses and caring hugs to welcome folks or say goodbye to them at conferences.

What a magical moment from this beloved show. I grew up watching reruns of "I love Lucy" in the 1960's. The chemistry between Lucy, Desi, Vivian Vance and William Frawley made for one of most iconic series in television history.
You can tell it made her feel sentimental

When Ricky sings the first line to Lucy! I love Lucy and she loves me! You can see the real love between Desi and Lucy no acting involved when he sang this song to her!
It may have been real then but they ended up divorcing later :(
True, they did divorce; but the love never truly went away. The last conversation they had before he died was on November 30, 1986, the day that would have been their 46th wedding anniversary and two days before his death. They told each other that they loved each other. Even if the marriage didn't last, the love did.

When they ask me a definition of true love, Desi and Lucy is always my answer. People can say what they'd like, but it is obvious that the only woman Desi ever loved was Lucy. The sweet way he looks at her as he begins to sing her theme, is beautiful. You can sense the love they both had for one another just by the way their eyes lit up whenever they were together like this. If that is not true love, then I don't know what is.
I agree with you, I know he treated her poorly but he was a man bound to his culture and she still loved him. It just shows in that it took her 20 years to divorce him.
If they ever did a Spy Kids reboot it'd be cute if the parents met working as actors and had their own hit sitcom when the kids were born. ^_^

The first time I watched this, aside from how adorable it was, the lyrics started to have a familar melody, and my eyebrow went up. Then the band kicked in....I flipped out "OH!!! Dude! It's the theme song!!!!! HELL YEAH!!!!"

It's amazing to me! Lucy and Desi's love for each other pops, BOOM! right through the television screen. I know they had difficulties in the marriage but WOW, look at Lucille Ball as Desi sings to her! She is NOT acting. Here's a woman so in love and a man that adores her. On my 17th Birthday I felt exactly like Lucy, Friendless and this episode came on in the middle of the afternoon when I was somewhat sad at the time but then I watched them all come together in the end, cause that's what my friends did at the end of the night, they showed me I wasn't celebrating alone and Lucy reminded me of that so I love this Ep and this Song so much.

At 64 years of age,I NOW appreciate what a great show this was,and,in addition to Lucy and Ethel,how magnificent Desi Arnaz is as an actor and a singer.And William Frawley,if you pay close attention, is a real pro and greatest Fred there could ever be.
The "I love Lucy" show was almost an exact copy of "My Favorite Husband," which was a classic radio show from the 30s'to early 40s.
If you listen the My Favorite Husband, there are slight changes. Changes to account for Ricky being Cuban, band leader, having an accent. Aside from that- the story lines are the same.
They were absolutely in love -at first. Lucy had to stand her ground -he had to be on the show.
They knew what happened to couples that were in show business and how critical it was to the marriage that They work together and not separately.
I feel that Lucy ALWAYS loved him. When they finally split-it was after so much heartache.
I feel Ricky (or Desi) truly loved Lucy during the "Cuban Pete" duet with Lucy, in the Anniversary episode when he sing the Theme song to her, and when he sings "We're having a baby."
To be there is no acting the eyes of someone in love.
I'm a big Lucy fan, I have the collection, and learned so much from the information on the DVDs.

I Love Lucy is the Best Show in history of TV period end of Story. This show is in a Class all by itself nothing can top it. My Favorite Show of all times. I have the complete Series on DVD plus the Luci-Dezi Comedy hour on DVD. Great memories.

I loved this episode. I loved just about every episode of I Love Lucy. So much of the humor has stood the test of time.
The Lucy museum in Jamestown NY is incredible. Actual sets, costumes etc. A long with their actual histories. The comedy museum is also there. Great day if your within a couple of hours.
