Your Gut's Best Friend: The Science of Dietary Fiber

- It's astonishing that quite possibly the most game-changing ingredient we consume as part of food is not something our bodies can digest. It happens to be food for the trillions of gut bacteria living in our large intestine, and every year, we are discovering new ingredients in our food that specifically seem to feed these bacteria.
More than all of the crazy exaggerated claims about gut coaching and supplements, simply increasing the number of vegetables and fruits you eat daily will have a significant impact on your long term health.

At home we create something we call 'podi' - basically grind chia seeds, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds etc. to a coarse powder and store it in a jar. We add this not while cooking but to the plate every meal - a heaped table spoon or two. We even add it to chappati dough, dosa batter or pizza dough We also sneak it to restaurants. The idea is to add fibre to every meal without significantly altering the taste.
Adds a crunch element to food as well
Dont do that take this powder only thrice in a week your body is well balanced with minerals and vitamins anything in excess is dangerous.. In my session people mix all nuts in powered form with raw garlic but daily if u consume it can increase rbc count.. Suppose u eat beets spinach daily or in large quantity pottasium level will sky rocket and heart attack can happen.. So eat light eat colors drink water and dont stuff too much chemically infested food.. Dont fast eat morning eat lunch and light dinner at 6.ok

i had bookmarked 20+ different videos on youtube to sit down and research about the right foods and diets for me and my mum (I was literally stuck in this worm hole of wrong info right info about soo many foods for years)(even my well educated mom was constantly influenced by wrong info given by soo many "influencers") thank god i have been discovering your videos, now you made my life soo much easier and put me in such mental relief like always, this video literally clears out almost every question i had about diets for humans, really appreciate your work sir, and thank you soo much for doing the job our schools couldn't do

The importance of fiber in our diet, especially for gut health, cannot be overstated. It's fascinating how something indigestible to us can have such a profound impact on our well-being by nourishing our gut bacteria. Increasing vegetable and fruit intake is indeed a simple yet powerful way to promote long-term health. Thanks for this valuable information. And can I how I can get that 'Dosa' T-Shirt..! 😅
Thank you! T-shirt is from a local Chennai brand called fully filmy
Excellent work. Thank you.
the best info on fiber till now for me, thanks keep up the good work 🙏
Thank you!
Great work as usual - I am telugu UA-camr but a medical doctor - settled in US am also trying to work on a channel on similar lines of education and information - and your channel is always inspiring (though I make my content more boring lol) and you serve it very delicious.
Thank you doctor! It’s always a tough balance between being scientifically precise and communicating science to a layperson audience.
hello uncle i am also telugu. i see so many people that make videos in English to reach a wider audience. and thats valid to a certain extent. but who really needs this content is uncles and aunties. my elders would not watch a video in english just because they find it effortful to comprehend English no matter how entertaining it is. i really love non scammy educational videos in telugu.
@@harsheh thank you, harsh - yes, that is my goal - to teach us methodical learning of science for middle age people like me and how to take care of our health as well as elders
@@harsheh It is also good for my language skills. I left Andhra in 2007 and have lived in the US for the past 14 years, so it is good to get back to telugu - work and teaching is already in English anyway

Hi Krish. I'm an Endocrinologist from Andhra.
Would love to hear about quantification of dietary fibre in our regular diet in a simple way similar to what you explained regarding quantifying protein in one of your videos. Thanks in advance

In traditional Indian cuisine, food is treating lots of ailments..
It's a proper science , the effect of food on specific body type.

Superb explanation!👍
Thank you 🙂
Hey Krish,
Everyone has already said it but well, I love the proud DOSA on the NASA logo. :)
Also I have been watching your videos and I really love the fact that you give up to date information on food and health.
I am sure you must have read Micheal Pollan. He blew my mind a few years ago when I read ‘In Defense of Food’.
It’s awesome that you are making this info reachable to the Indian audiences amidst so much misinformation and fear mongering.
Kudos.
Thank you!
Very elaborately explained. Your pronunciation is also equally fantastic.
Thank you!
Loads of info tq.
Thank you
Got Masala lab couple of days back. Started reading. Your explanation on conduction convection radiation I found it interesting. Can’t wait to get home and read. Too bad I get few minutes every day.
Anyway Just reminding--/ as I said in the comments section of your last video please make a video on this too. Will be very helpful. Thanks.
Rice if you cook in pressure cooker will have arsenic. You got to cook in open pot with lot of water and drain the excess water to remove arsenic.
The arsenic is absorbed via soil into the grain. Draining method will at best reduce a bit more. Soaking and discarding water also reduces it.
@@krishashok what if you don’t soak but pressure cook after washing?
Excellent information
Thank you
Keep up the 'Great' work Ashok 🙌
Thank you!
Nice presentation!
Thank you for all your well explained, carefully researched videos. Can you do a video on Artificial sweeteners please like Sucralose? Especially their effect on Gut Microbiome. There is so much of controversy around them. We need somebody like you to break it down and explain to us.
Bravo, we can add cluster beans to list too, You are a marvel, way to go.
Thank you
Hello from California 🌷Your English sounds so nice, so clearly pronounced. You would be an excellent English here in California where many foreign born citizens would benefit greatly. 👍🙏
Bhindi-chana & chicken rice bowl is my favourite!
Now I can look cool while eatin in!
Thank you for the information, love these explainers
Also myth section is really good, please increase it's duration here if possible
I typically reuse the 90 second reels I post on instagram in between the longer videos
I m so fan of your channel that words can't explain. I have a request if you can make a tube on basil seeds. Chia has been so vibrant but I can see basil seeds could be an equal and cheaper alternative except for the fact that basil seeds of a table spoon contains half as less as omega 3 than that in the same amount of chia. But at the same time omega 3 in content in a table spoon is sufficient for our daily need. So why rush for chia....?!?!
Will do! In general expensive ingredients tend to be overrated
Sir, thanks a lot for breaking myths with science and helping women a lot
Thank you!
Hello Sir!
Your videos are clear and we appreciate your efforts in making such useful videos!
I have a doubt regarding fruit juices.
Doctors say there is no fiber in juices as the fiber is filtered out.
But if we juice the fruit and consume it without filtering the fiber ,is the fiber content the same(as in whole fruit )or is it still lost?
Can you pls clarify?
Very useful information explained well
I would suggest that going through any standard text book on Ayurveda could be worthwhile as all diseases start in the gut and digestive power is of paramount importance in preventing any disease. In addition,Ayurveda considers the importance of seasons and regions in deciding what to eat where."Ine man's food is another man's poison".Homogeneity in foid is not recommended as a food that may ve assimilated in one region may not be digested in another.
Traditionally we Tamils eat Pazhaya soru especially during the hot seasons and today it is accepted that it provides vitamin B12 to vegetarians.
AWESOME VIDEO sir jee
Thank you !
Very informative video👌
Thank you!
Hey Krishashok! Great video, can you pl post a video on how to count protien intake "by just viewing the plate"
Yes, pending! Will do
Incredibly informative

Great content as always. When you talked about refrigerated rice slowing digestion - should it not be reheated to have that effect?
No. You can. You still get the benefits
🤝 fantastic!
Very informative and useful.
Glad it was helpful!
@@krishashok sir they way you present the facts is very convincing and well researched. Have this question to ask . Are grapes good to eat the ones that are freely available in the market which I was told is loaded with endosulfan vis a vis the organic grapes that is available in lots of stores selling organic stuff.
Nice. It’s complex to understand!
Thank you!
Loved the long video.
Thank you!
Very Informative. I like the way you present very technical information
Thank you
Great
With legumes I have observed if you increase the intake slowly you start digesting it better without any discomfort. Directly jumping to certain quantity might not be the best idea.
Please drop diet for IBD patients , especially for crohn's!
Still fiber became question mark whn comes to diet for IBD patients!
Wheather soluble or insoluble is good for our gut?!
Can you please clarify on the work of Metformin, the integral drug in every diabetes medicine, it apparently does what the fibers do in our stomach; induce satiation to promote less eating.
Thank you as always.
I love the Dosa t-shirt btw, let us know if its up for purchase..
Is isabgol good for the gut microbes?

Please do a video on difference in nutritive value of soaked rice and dal before cooking vs. just simply washed rice and dal. Also, the science of soaking almonds or other nuts.
Soaking rice and dal helps reduce phytates. Soaking nuts makes no difference to phytate levels (already posted video ua-cam.com/video/Lai7-cOppUE/v-deo.htmlsi=ulEa59FSeqC1EeLa)
The chemistry teacher i needed in college.
