Here Comes The Sun: The Science of Vitamin D

  • When you hear the word "photosynthesis", you probably think plants, but we also "make with light". Our skin uses Ultraviolet B light to synthesize Vitamin D, and it's pretty essential to our wellbeing. But what is fascinating is the delicate balance between making enough Vitamin D and being at high risk of skin cancer. And the molecule that completes this menage a trois is the one that fundamentally underpins racism and things like "fairness creams".

Fascinating! I remember reading about the earliest English people and how they had brown skin and blue eyes (going back thousands of years). The British government recommends that *everyone* take a vitamin D supplement, at least between October and March, due to a lack of sunlight, so even those of us who are very fair skinned need a boost in the winter, given our modern diets

One healthy feedback: in between a lot of times you speak slow, for which I had to reverse and increase volume. Then later at times you speak loud, which hurt ears after having increased the volume and listening through earphones. Then again at places you speak slow...so on so forth was my experience in the entire video, which was irritating. 👎🏼

Thanks for the video. I suffer from many skin diseases, the latest being vitiligo (loss of skin pigmentation) which began around 2 years ago. This led me to research Vitamin D extensively. I suspected an immune system that was out of whack. My Vit D test showed a result of only 18nl/ml. I began supplementing with around 3500IU a day. I also increased my protein intake significantly with eggs, red meat and organ meats. I am also taking Omega 3 supplements. I am also getting regular sun exposure, both morning and afternoon, whenever i can get it. I wear only short sleeve shirts to work now. The vitiligo lesions are more likely to get sunburned, so i am careful. Cancer is a risk, but interestingly, melanoma requires melanin, but there could be other problems of course. As a result of this routine, my Vitiligo has mostly stabilized, and the exposed areas of my skin are showing repigmentation. I am on a long journey to recovering from this horrible disease. In some ways i am grateful that this disease has revealed a nutritient deficit which, had i left it unaddressed, could have led to more serious diseases as i get older. Btw here are some interesting other facts on the topic:
    1. Time slows down as you approach the speed of light. Photons travel at the speed of light and so do not experience time. So a photon created 8 mins ago on the sun that lands on your skin is experiencing both creation and destruction at the same moment. The same could be said of star light created hundreds of millions of years ago that lands on your eye.
    2. According to a video by Medcram titled Light As Medicine, infrared radiation from the sun penetrates about 10cm into the tissue causing mitochondria within the cell to produce melatonin locally (instead of the night time Pineal gland operation). Locally produced melatonin helps to clear oxidative stress during daytime. So if you are unwell with the flu, then you should get some warming infrared (clothing is fine as infrared can penetrate). Incidentally this was the basis of solariums, which helped patients during the 1918 Spanish Flu. They didn't know what about the sun helped the sick, but it did and that's what mattered. A Nobel Prize was won but forgotten due to the discovery of Penicillin the following year (i think). Cheers.

Just today, I got tested and got my VitD levels back to normal. Less than an year ago my vitD was at insufficient levels and also had subclinical hypothyroidism. Since I read up about these to find out what's going on, I found that there is a co-relation between these two.
The same gene that reduces vitamin D production, apparently also has a hand in regulating thyroid functions.
So, if either of these are low, it would be a good idea to check the other one as well.
I tried going out to get some sunlight, but with the current state of climate, its almost like a gamble between sunburn or vitD and it makes me think its better to take maintainance level VitD and use suncreen.
P.S: From what I know, though it's theoretically possible for sunscreen to lower VitD, studies so far have only shown that it doesn't make any significant change. Infact I personally think, it could be the other way around, if we think about melanin production. Since brown skin is more prone to post- inflammatory hyperpigmentation and sunscreen prevents it, shouldn't it theoretically prevent melanin lowering vitD production or atleast even out the deficit of reduced uv exposure of sunscreen? I have also been using tyrosinase (produce melanin) inhibitor lately as skincare, so I wonder if that along with sunscreens slowing down melanin production could be a relief to the concern of it lowering vitD production. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this

Awesome. But, a small note - the reason why people are told to spend time outside in the Sun at Sunrise and Sunset is little to do with the UVA, UVB, Skin, or Melanin. Its to do with the effect of different rays of the Sun on the Photoreceptors in our eyes and the consequent effect on the Circadian cycles. 😉

I live in singapore and hence close to equator. When I was tested for VIT D3 deficiency few years ago, I tried to spend time under the Sun with just shorts for 30 mins each day sometime between 12 to 2 PM. I did this diligently for a month. A test after did not detect any improvement at all. I started to take supplements now and am fine. Not sure if there is more to bodies ability to absorb the sunlight and to convert it into D3 as you explained(fair bit of process that goes through internally) to get it converted to D3.

Shouldn’t the less availability of UV radiation but lower melanin balance out greater UV availing but higher melanin to produce humans of similar height? Surely there must be other factors at play here.

There are black african group of people that live near the equators and are some of the tallest in the world. Also black population in general are very tall. So, idk how sound that theory is.
Also, do black people living in europe and north America have lower bone density than whites? Since, their body recieves very low UVB radiation due to higher melanin
