    In my stocking a few years ago Santa left me a digital / laser measuring tool. It was a little fiddly go get used to, but when you made a measurement you could commit it to the device's memory (don't recall exactly how many you can save), it's accurate if you do it right, it makes it easier to measure certain weird angles / dimensions, and it's easy for one person to use; the light never droops in the middle and collapses to the floor. 🙄
    Most of us have our phones with us all the time so most of the time these days whenever I take a measurement (regardless of what I'm using to measure with) I take a picture of as much of the scene as I can get - that way it's easier to figure out what I was measuring / what the context was, I don't have to remember anything or decipher my handwriting, and I can easily reference them in the hardware store or wherever I happen to be. Additionally you can group the photos into albums so that you can put all the "Guest Bedroom Measurements" in one place so they're easy to find.
    I have no idea whether that would help w/ dyslexia, but it would at least be the original image, which one would presumably have to interpret in the first place, eh?

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  4 місяці тому

      I use my phone’s camera like that all the time. I’ve had a few coworkers who don’t know about my dyslexia see me snapping pictures while measuring and they’ve called me on it, because they don’t get why I would do that when I could just write it down!

    Switch to metric measuring for a month and then see if you switch back, the math is easier, and those Fastcap tapes are nice. I didn't know about them until I saw Jason's vid on them over at his Bent's Woodworking channel. He talks about them in his "8 Tools I Regret Not Buying Sooner" at the 6:28 mark.

    The power switch I have and do highly recommend. It’s so convenient the dc starts afterward and stops afterward. No more, “Oh it’s just a little job, so….”
    I have a Makita pin nailer. It too jams - I’ve yet to use it more than once as the jam was serious enough it screwed up the “workings”. I’m interested to know how well the WEN works.
    Thank you for the info.👍👍

    My neighbor picked up a box of miscellaneous hardware at a farm auction for five bucks. Old strap hinges, gate hardware, rusty bolts and etc comprised most of the treasure inside. But that’s not why he bought it.
    He bought it because his dad was a Wen fan years ago. And, right on top was an old corded 3/8” single speed, no reverse, keyed chuck hand drill.
    When we got our auction finds home, he couldn’t wait to test the drill. As I was digging through the box to find the chuck key, he plugged in the drill. And… nothing.
    That is, until he banged in the side of it with the palm of his hand.
    It sprang to life… hissing and smelling like old electric motors do. He then released the trigger and pressed it again. This time it started without a tap.
    He then looked at me and said, “Yep! Just like dad’s. You have to wake them up. Then they’ll run all day!”
    So, ‘Wen’ is a drill not just a drill?
    ‘Wen’ it’s a memory!
    PS… the chuck key wasn’t in the treasure box.

    The Hultafors tape measure is very interesting. If only they made an Imperial version. I can work and convert between metric and imperial, but in the US so many things are made/sold/worked using imperial.
    I had a Wen small diameter chisel sharpener decades ago. I put it out on a Free pile a long time ago. Interesting to see the rebirth of the brand. I like the Wen sawhorses. Tempting.
    I love my CBN wheel, also purchased from Woodturners Wonders. For your viewers, CBN is good for sharpening tool steels and hardened steel, but should not be used to sharpen mild steel since this can clog up the wheel. This is why I only purchased one CBN wheel and have the other side with the normal grey wheel.
    Dave.

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  4 місяці тому +1

      That’s a very good point about the CBN wheel. I’ve purchased a few more non-CBN wheels for the other size for that very reason. Scott

  • @kensherwin4544
    @kensherwin4544 4 місяці тому +2

    When I upgraded my sharpening system with a CBN wheel (you won't regret it), I needed a better grinder than the 3,450 rpm, 6" ones I inherited but was too tight to buy one. By this time, I had a new lathe because my Shopsmith was too small (not enough swing, length, or horsepower) but it was perfect to run the CBN wheel. I also found 900 rpm was much a more comfortable speed than 1,800 rpm to run that wheel. The doesn't create ANY dust and the steel it removes is both cold and negligible so I don't even bother covering the ways. It sure is handy to have a Shopsmith around.

    Nice video. In search now for a new 8" Slow speed Grinder for my lathe tools. Very interested in how this works out for you with the sharpening system. I think I have the same system as well. Was looking at the Bauer Grinder....your opinion?

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  4 місяці тому +2

      I looked long and hard at the Bauer that was on display at our local HF and I preferred a couple things about that Wen. I thought the wheels looked nicer, the tool rests were larger and don’t have the drill bit groove as standard on the Wen. The tool rest on the Bauer requires a wrench for two of the mounts, though you could argue that once they are locked in place you shouldn’t need to mess with it. Finally, the Wen has a tee year warranty, while the Bauer has a 90 day warranty.

    I have owned or do currently own a few Wen tools. I like them because of what you said, they were a bit better than the Harbor Freight, at least back in the Chicago Electric days. However, since the HF went to the good, better, best model with Warrior, Bauer, and Hercules I believe you CAN get better tools at HF. But, I think what Wen does well is to very ofter hit the medium quality that have the right focus of features to be very functional and useful. I think Milescraft is another company that does a good job at selecting those feature focused on functionality and usefulness to offer a good value.

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  4 місяці тому +1

      I agree that HF has really stepped up their game in recent years. I own several Bauer tools and gave the 8” Bauer bench grinder a very close look, but it fell short in too many areas where I concluded that the Wen version was superior. Even so, I’m sure I would have been happy with the Bauer, had I purchased it.

      I’ve moved around homemade saw horses for years trying to find a place for them so they are out of the way. Show me some plans that fold up as compactly, as strong, lightweight and as easily stowed, I’ll put in with you. I went all in with the centipedes and I can’t be happier. I can store 4x8 worth in less than half the space of my Shopsmith. Those WEN saw horses look pretty good to me.

    Great video. I have a very specific question that I hope you will be able to answer. I have a very similar WoodtunrersWonders CBN wheel and what might be the same lathe tool holder. I have them attached to my bench-mounted grinder, but I wondered if the tool rest and CBN wheel could be used with the Mark V headstock. I actually built a mock up device, but I didn't test it because I don't trust my own judgment and wanted a second opinion . I used the SS universal arbor to hold the CBN wheel, but as I recall the shaft of the arbor was just a bit shorter than I would have liked. If you get a chance before you mount the CBN wheel on your grinder, see if it fits on the SS arbor, and perhaps share a few thoughts about whether or not you think this wheel could work the the SS headstock.

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  4 місяці тому +2

      It’s worth exploring, but be careful if you wind up mounting the wheel to the left side of the headstock as the arbor nut can come loose if it isn’t used with a tongued washer and the proper tension on the nut.
