This deserved the Oscar. Birdman was great but Whiplash is a movie that comes once in decades and leaves a mark on the viewers so deep that they're not able to forget it even after years.

Few people realize that this film is one of a very few that is shot in first person. There isn’t a single scene that Miles Teller is out of the room. All shots of his family, girlfriend, practice sessions, etc., are in the room with Miles. Extraordinary.

If you would care to let me know the time into the movie it is, I would really like to see it. Of course, he is not in every "shot", but I was quite sure he was either in the room, or looking into a room that made up every setting/scene. At any rate, I think it was quite rare and challenging for someone to have written a movie script that was essentially first person (Birdman comes to mind also). So, good catch, Rashi... I'm a tad embarrassed at my inaccuracy. I'll be sitting over in the corner next to Baby (Dirty Dancing), licking my wounds. Haha.

@@curtiselder6644 Yes, the scene exists, BUT.... it is only a short "camera drive across the waiting scenery" which is, so I think, not ment to show different perspectives, but to underline the lengthy duration of the challenging torment the drummers have to endure. There are limited ways to portray the passing of time, so I would still consider this "first person", because the scene only exists to demonstrate what the protagonist goes through.

No movie has made me feel as anxious, tense, exhilarated, or as terrified as Whiplash did. Breathtaking performances from both Simmons and Teller that genuinely had me on the edge of my seat for a good part of the movie. If you're on the fence about seeing this movie, don't use the comments here as a way to make a decision. Just watch it for yourself and you'll understand what I mean when I say it was the best movie of 2014. One thing I hate though, is how the trailer basically spoils two of the most intense moments of the entire movie. *Ugh.*

Some people (particularly jazz musicians) say they hate the movie because it portrays jazz instructors as very rude people, and it makes it look like all jazz instructors are horrible. While I do see where they're coming from, I strongly disagree.
The movie is supposed to be a psychological thriller with two characters with very opposing ways of achieving the exact same goal. They just chose to have these characters be Jazz musicians just as a vehicle for the plot.
It's not really a film about Jazz and the appreciation of it. There are hints of it, but it's not the main focus. Even if it was that kind of film, they aren't saying all jazz instructors are like this. They're just trying to make a very interesting and wild character (JK Simmons). Just because one movie shows an instructor that abused his students, doesn't mean all instructors are like that.
Sorry for the long paragraphs, but I just wanted state my opinion. I love this film so much.

+D0nutLord In reality though and just as a general statement, people are only allowed to treat you this way if you let them. We all must always remember to stand up for ourselves and say how we want to be treated. We must not let the fear of failing eat away at us inside because that's how we lose ourselves as people. I know this is just a movie, but I've seen a lot of people through my young life so far, myself included who have felt this way because they weren't perfect at whatever they were working on. Remember to always just do the best you can and if others can't accept that then that's their issue, not yours.

There is a difference between teachers and just a parasite. Working for such a terrible and hardly useful. BUT teachers, it's very difficult, there are people who can't study like that, and there are people who can only do that. I learned something only from such people, one of them is my father, he is a kind man and a caring father until it comes to studying, he even broke my arm because I did not perform the exercise correctly (not on purpose).
This movie really hooked me, because it's not just an arrogant old man, he's really good.

I absolutely love this movie. It's one of my favourite movies of all time. I relate so much to the main character Miles in this movie. I completely identify with his struggles to pursue his dreams and never giving up despite the obstacles he had to face such as Terrence constantly verbally abusing him and telling him he's terrible at what he does.
It also has a great screenplay, with great direction and great performances, with the best being JK Simmons. He absolutely steals the show everytime he's on screen.

This movie was amazing and so exhilarating. One unanswered question I have is: who the hell took the music folder when he lost it at the competition? Seriously it was one foot behind him and he had his back turned for a total of maybe 5 seconds and you see nobody walk behind him so who took it? Still an awesome movie but I think they could've done that scene a little better where they show him misplace it or a janitor throw it away

I'd say that Fletcher took it. He said a little earlier in the movie that there would be trouble if he saw another one of those folders lying around, so I reckon he took it to make a point - basically to force the owner of it to admit to him that they lost their folder so he could scold them for the mistake. When Neeman says that he has memorised the scores then Fletcher decides to try him out as core because he respected the fact that he was so committed that he had memorised the song. At least that's the way I interpreted it. I doubt a janitor would have trashed something like that, and Neeman seemed genuinely surprised and upset that he had lost it so I don't think it was him either.

Im not into these types of movies, but Whiplash was just one of those movies that can just keep you watching and attract any audience. Great movie. Well directed, genius plot, great cast. All the best ingredients.

Spoiler question: when Jk Simmons says it Miles at the end "I know it was you" does he mean like he knew it was him how told the police woman or does he mean he knows he is his one special student that he was waiting for this whole time?

He knew it was him who ratted him out. Only reason he asked him to be in his band at the end was to watch him fall on his ass cause he didn't know the chart.

    • @Nhxn_
      @Nhxn_ 9 років тому +3

groalerable he didn't jeopardize the band since they were going to perform something else afterwards.
plus everybody did well apart from the drumming.

The teacher in this movie reminds me of my father. I realize now he wasn’t trying to break me down he was just trying to make me better. Doesn’t justify abuse though. But I appreciate everything he taught me.
