Saw him cook with his small kids. That was damn cute! :) Gordon's a great guy and chef. The television surfed on his natural talent on yelling, because that's what people like to watch.
Few people realize that this film is one of a very few that is shot in first person. There isn’t a single scene that Miles Teller is out of the room. All shots of his family, girlfriend, practice sessions, etc., are in the room with Miles. Extraordinary.
@@rashianand7534 Oh my! I'm sure you are right, but I'm not finding it yet... there are many torture scenes to sift through! If you would care to let me know the time into the movie it is, I would really like to see it. Of course, he is not in every "shot", but I was quite sure he was either in the room, or looking into a room that made up every setting/scene. At any rate, I think it was quite rare and challenging for someone to have written a movie script that was essentially first person (Birdman comes to mind also). So, good catch, Rashi... I'm a tad embarrassed at my inaccuracy. I'll be sitting over in the corner next to Baby (Dirty Dancing), licking my wounds. Haha.
@@curtiselder6644 Yes, the scene exists, BUT.... it is only a short "camera drive across the waiting scenery" which is, so I think, not ment to show different perspectives, but to underline the lengthy duration of the challenging torment the drummers have to endure. There are limited ways to portray the passing of time, so I would still consider this "first person", because the scene only exists to demonstrate what the protagonist goes through.
No movie has made me feel as anxious, tense, exhilarated, or as terrified as Whiplash did. Breathtaking performances from both Simmons and Teller that genuinely had me on the edge of my seat for a good part of the movie. If you're on the fence about seeing this movie, don't use the comments here as a way to make a decision. Just watch it for yourself and you'll understand what I mean when I say it was the best movie of 2014. Some people (particularly jazz musicians) say they hate the movie because it portrays jazz instructors as very rude people, and it makes it look like all jazz instructors are horrible. While I do see where they're coming from, I strongly disagree. The movie is supposed to be a psychological thriller with two characters with very opposing ways of achieving the exact same goal. They just chose to have these characters be Jazz musicians just as a vehicle for the plot. It's not really a film about Jazz and the appreciation of it. There are hints of it, but it's not the main focus. Even if it was that kind of film, they aren't saying all jazz instructors are like this. +D0nutLord In reality though and just as a general statement, people are only allowed to treat you this way if you let them. We all must always remember to stand up for ourselves and say how we want to be treated. We must not let the fear of failing eat away at us inside because that's how we lose ourselves as people. I know this is just a movie, but I've seen a lot of people through my young life so far, myself included who have felt this way because they weren't perfect at whatever they were working on. Remember to always just do the best you can and if others can't accept that then that's their issue, not yours.
Kirsten Noe Now that is very true, but I feel like Miles Teller's character wanted to just be the best drummer. And, the reason why Miles didn't walk out is because he knows the teacher wants to make him great.

I loved this film, loved everything about it, loved how it made me sit in the edge of my chair biting my nails, hoping and terrified at the same time. I felt like I was the drummer... The performances are out of this world!! After it was over I wished it was longer, it felt a lot shorter than it is. Thank you for this masterpiece!
Hahah no way! Wes Anderson is amazing but my list for this year is: 1. Whiplash 2. Birdman 3. Grand Budapest Hotel 4. Imitation Game 5. Theory of Everything
I agree. Stephen looks like a very good guy in the whole movie. But, I forget the real history and just enjoy the story and acting. A book by your ex-wife, Jane, after your divorce reveals all kind of problems she had with him.
I absolutely love this movie. It's one of my favourite movies of all time. I relate so much to the main character Miles in this movie. I completely identify with his struggles to pursue his dreams and never giving up despite the obstacles he had to face such as Terrence constantly verbally abusing him and telling him he's terrible at what he does. It also has a great screenplay, with great direction and great performances, with the best being JK Simmons. He absolutely steals the show everytime he's on screen. I give this a 10/10 and if you haven't seen this yet, I recommend that you watch it as it really is an amazing film.
this days people are so fucked up , they are commenting such a bad things , but then you watch a movie and it is not bad at all. I wish I was born 50 years ago where everything was innocent and nice. Not like this days. xx
One of the best movies ever in my opinion - one I can watch over and over and always feel the tension between those characters. J. K. Simmons earned his academy award!
+Miguel Ochoa Fletcher showed something almost similar to a smile in the last scene That's all the credits he was able to squeeze out of himself to give to Andrew :)
It was paradoxical in the sense as Fletcher couldn't resist telling(non-verbally) "GOOD JOB" to Andrew. But it still gives me goosebumps everytime I watch the ending scene 🔥
@@m9k1ng imo fvck the credit, he did so good and blew everyone away to the point that if hes not pleased, he can go fvck himself. Hes a good teacher tho.
In the end, JK Simmons finally smirks because he found his ways have worked. He made a genius out of a mediocre student. All the time, no one was trying to understand his way, his teachings, but finally miles did. He went out of his way and became the student he always wanted to be
This movie was amazing and so exhilarating. One unanswered question I have is: who the hell took the music folder when he lost it at the competition? Seriously it was one foot behind him and he had his back turned for a total of maybe 5 seconds and you see nobody walk behind him so who took it? Still an awesome movie but I think they could've done that scene a little better where they show him misplace it or a janitor throw it away
I'd say that Fletcher took it. He said a little earlier in the movie that there would be trouble if he saw another one of those folders lying around, so I reckon he took it to make a point - basically to force the owner of it to admit to him that they lost their folder so he could scold them for the mistake. When Neeman says that he has memorised the scores then Fletcher decides to try him out as core because he respected the fact that he was so committed that he had memorised the song. At least that's the way I interpreted it. I doubt a janitor would have trashed something like that, and Neeman seemed genuinely surprised and upset that he had lost it so I don't think it was him either.
khyoon14 No, it's not arbitrary (incorrect use of the word by the way, moron). The right answer is Fletcher. There is literally no one else it could have been. Not everything in movies has to be spoonfed to you. It's a matter of deductive reasoning.

I like it when movies are better than the trailers, but you are right. It does not. The only reason I watched it was because some critics were talking about it on TNT, so i gave it a shot and I´m so glad I did. I even wrote an essay about this film for a class. My professor loved it.
Holy s**t, I felt like I was in the film. Every single scenes were so realistic and relates to our daily life. I usually don’t write or talk too much but after watching it just now! I can’t describe feelings, right now my face is with various emotions altogether at the same time. Miles Teller and J. K. Simmons acting made my day. Loved it...
Ok. I've loved Miles' acting talent from Footloose (2011) to The Spectacular Now. But this movie, this is his BIG ONE. Amazing drumming talent alongside superb acting, the Academy better take a look at Miles and know that he deserves a nomination. J.K. Simmons, oh lord. From J. Jonah. Jameson at the Daily Bugle, to Cave Johnson in Portal 2, I love this guy. As soon as he blew up at Miles during the rehearsal scene, I was instantly mesmerized. Stunning and leaves me in awe. I haven't even scene this movie yet, but I know its gonna soar. I'm telling you guys, Oscars: 2015, we could see "Whiplash" announced in numerous categories...
DONT WATCH the trailer - if you HAVE NOT SEEN the MOVIE YET This trailer does not do the actual movie justice, they censored J.H. Simmons anger speech (which was a nut-punch, just from the audio aspect) and they cheapened all the highlights, I am happy I never saw the trailer before watching, because all that hard work and perfect timing leading up to everyone of those scenes would have been wasted if I saw them in this quick montage before watching the full movie.
ScXbyZKHD I am saying the movie is much better than the trailer, it's better not to watch the trailer beforehand, but either way definitely do watch the movie.
I never saw this movie before....one of the teachers who used to come in my bus reccomended this movie to me...and now its coming on a HD channel in a few days..I am SO excited to watch this...i heard this is Miles Teller's best performance

xxladybug94 watched last night, felt the same intensity. The storyline could appeal to just about anyone. Reminds me of when I was in high school band. Some teachers could really bring you to that point or bring out your very best!
Holy crap. I've never really been one for movies similar to this (like, drama and romance and stuff), but I'm REALLY itching to see this one. Like, REALLY.
Best camera shots I've ever seen. And it cannot be described how good the plot is. The title is so appropriate, because it describes what Fletcher is doing to Andrew over and over again, creating a pattern. It's really amazing if you catch on. And that ending was completely unexpected, spectacular. One of my favourite movies.
Just watched this for the first time tonight. Needless to say, it won't be the last. Just wow. What an intense, emotive film, with just incredible audio. Watch this film with the best surround sound system you can get your hands on! 10/10.
Im not into these types of movies, but Whiplash was just one of those movies that can just keep you watching and attract any audience. Great movie. Well directed, genius plot, great cast. All the best ingredients.
Spoiler question: when Jk Simmons says it Miles at the end "I know it was you" does he mean like he knew it was him how told the police woman or does he mean he knows he is his one special student that he was waiting for this whole time?
He knew it was him who ratted him out. Only reason he asked him to be in his band at the end was to watch him fall on his ass cause he didn't know the chart.
Justin Walker right on the money with that explanation! I'd say good job but that's harmful.. awesome job haha.. This movie was the best of the year, hands down
The teacher in this movie reminds me of my father. I realize now he wasn’t trying to break me down he was just trying to make me better. Doesn’t justify abuse though. But I appreciate everything he taught me.
I know I'm 4 years late but I just watched this movie and it was the most intense movie I've ever seen. Am I the only one who cried during the movie?? I got so overwhelmed with emotions and felt the pressure until I couldn't take it anymore. Also, this movie has the BEST ending ever

Cause we are Metallica!
The power of having a REAL MENTOR...is that it takes out the best from you
the whole point of the movie is that he wasn’t a good mentor and was mostly just abusive
You mean REAL MONSTER.
Missed the whole point I see? Lmao. These kind of "real mentors" traumatize you for life. They are not good, they're just abusive.
@@CeliaStHugo but he created a best student.... each have unique style to produce something special... he had like this style and that student want it...student never quit or leave to learn from him... teacher gave best to him...
@@rajamurugan1809true. Also ruined him. So idk. I don’t really agree with that because I had a teacher like that if not worse, and honestly all it did was drive me away from my passion and put me in therapy.
This movie is ridiculously underrated. The second it ended I just wanted to watch it again. Very powerful.
I watched this back to back when I purchased it on Vudu. It's one of my favorite music movies after Amadeus
Totally agreed. I've watched the ending at least 20 times now.
J.K. Simmons' loud voice is the best thing ever.
"BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN, WITH THE LEMONS!!!!"
I DON'T WANT YOUR DAMN LEMONS! WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THESE?
Not sure if portal 2 reference...
jacob lahr Well obviously, what else would it be?
Saw this the other day!! What a phenomenal film with unexpected twists and turns! If you have any passion for anything, go watch it!!
I would add that if you lack passion in your life, go see it!
rivinish It will make success feel even more unobtainable and make me feel even shittier. ~.~"
"If you have any passion for anything, go watch it"
Nice phrase, dude.
JGuilherme aw gee thanks :)
*shits the bed*
2014 had so many gems. This was the shiniest of them.
The last great year for movies
this is the only movie i've ever seen where i probably forget to breathe during the entire ending of it, it's amazing
I never liked musical movies especially this types of instruments, but i never forget this movie
Nobody appreciating the editing on this? Man the combination of Tom Cross and Damien Chazelle is just godly. All the emotions that we go through while watching this movie is a direct result of the editing. Hats off to Tom Cross really for making us feel the anxiety. Truly one of the best I've ever seen.
I'm upset!
LOUDER!
I'M UPSET!
This movie is such a masterpiece! Best 2014 movie, best ending, best actor in a supporting role, best soundtrack!
Hahah no way! Wes Anderson is amazing but my list for this year is:
1. Whiplash
2. Birdman
3. Grand Budapest Hotel
4. Imitation Game
5. Theory of Everything
I don't like soooooo much of Nightcrawler. Great performance and original ideia, but the actor who plays Stephen Hawking is unbelievable!
I agree. Stephen looks like a very good guy in the whole movie. But, I forget the real history and just enjoy the story and acting. A book by your ex-wife, Jane, after your divorce reveals all kind of problems she had with him.
Antonio Alencar Interstellar...
Antonio Alencar no...interstellar is the best 2014 movie. watch it if you haven't already.
im glad I didnt watch this spoiling ass trailer before the movie.
best movie of 2014
genesis bustamante same here!!!
Found your comment right before the ad finished. Huge thanks man. I'll watch and avoid the trailer ;)
I watched the trailer first and still enjoyed the movie.
Woosh...was a minute into the trailer when I read this. Hope I didn't spoil much for myself
@@meghdadjafarinate18gy79 That movie was good but whiplash is a masterpiece but my favorite of 2014 is still The grand Budapest hotel tho
The first half of "Full Metal Jacket" + "Black Swan" = "Whiplash"
TheKersey475
+ Hell's kitchen
Miles Teller absolutely deserves an Oscar nomination for this film.
this trailer was not up my tempo
but is it darring or rushing?
draging
yeah it was cut really weirdly
Dragging*** Christ.
Best movie I've seen in a loooonnngg time. I watched the ending five times in a row.
+FyffeTimesBetterThanYourAverageBanana Completely agree with you.
oh man, i've also watched the ending scene on youtube atleast 15 times after seeing the movie :D I occasionally visit back to see it.
i'm pretty sure i held my breath for that entire end scene
😂
just got back from seeing this. incredible. miles teller and jk simmons are brilliant. what a film
this days people are so fucked up , they are commenting such a bad things , but then you watch a movie and it is not bad at all. I wish I was born 50 years ago where everything was innocent and nice. Not like this days. xx
Go get a time machine, Grandpa!
It doesn't mean you don't either
Vogel lol ok
"When everything was innocent and nice." no offense but you're kidding right?
***** lol u guys r fucked :D btw , am gypsy , thats not white lol
One of the best movies ever in my opinion - one I can watch over and over and always feel the tension between those characters. J. K. Simmons earned his academy award!
Probably the movie with the most realistic dialogues - every word, every pause is as if it was done in 1 take, improvisation. Truly a masterpiece.
The last scene in this movie is so amazing.
I would of felt better if Fletcher gave him the credit he deserved lol
+Miguel Ochoa Fletcher showed something almost similar to a smile in the last scene That's all the credits he was able to squeeze out of himself to give to Andrew :)
Absolutely, that's about as good as it gets. So much raw emotion in this movie, you need to enjoy it cuz it's a rare thing.
He went out of his way and became the student he always wanted to be
Best movie I have seen in awhile. The last ten minutes holy fuck
where did u see it?
SebaxR9 Today in chicago
nice man. i live in mexico and apparently it won't be released here :( i'll see if i can get it from the internet, it looks dope af
SebaxR9 Ya it rocks
lopido coming out in the UK around January apparently :/ really want to see it, heard very good things about it
This movie was amazing and so exhilarating.
It's possible that he lost it on purpose to get the spot. Since he was asking all crazy obsessed about it
I'd say that Fletcher took it.
It was Fletcher.
khyoon14 No, it's not arbitrary (incorrect use of the word by the way, moron). The right answer is Fletcher. There is literally no one else it could have been. Not everything in movies has to be spoonfed to you. It's a matter of deductive reasoning.
I think it was Fletcher himself.
My favorite line is: "Fuck off, Jonny Utah! Turn my pages, bitch!"

And the antagonist COMMANDS the fucking screen
i need to see it again. holy crap was it amazing
How many minds do you have?
this trailer does NOT do this movie justice
maybe better that way. I don't like trailer which show best parts although this is a sign the movie has not many good scenes at all.
Actually it does. It's a great Trailer. Especially all the critics reviews at the drums tapping.
+chanceie12 I liked that part too. Have to see this movie..
I like it when movies are better than the trailers, but you are right. It does not. The only reason I watched it was because some critics were talking about it on TNT, so i gave it a shot and I´m so glad I did. I even wrote an essay about this film for a class. My professor loved it.
It is one of the best trailer ive seen
Holy s**t, I felt like I was in the film. Every single scenes were so realistic and relates to our daily life. I usually don’t write or talk too much but after watching it just now! I can’t describe feelings, right now my face is with various emotions altogether at the same time. Miles Teller and J. K. Simmons acting made my day. Loved it...
I had an hour and 46 minutes of goosebumps watching this movie.
Fuck yeh fuck yeh fuck yeh.
Glorious. A portrait of a man being torn apart by his own determination. Loved this one!
Good job on this trailer
+Ivan Ivanov Mr Fantastic, J Jonah Jameson, Supergirl
+Ivan Ivanov "there are no two words in the English language more harmful than 'good job'."
+Ivan Ivanov this trailer show too many key moment of the film
DONT WATCH the trailer - if you HAVE NOT SEEN the MOVIE YET
This trailer does not do the actual movie justice, they censored J.H. Simmons anger speech (which was a nut-punch, just from the audio aspect) and they cheapened all the highlights, I am happy I never saw the trailer before watching, because all that hard work and perfect timing leading up to everyone of those scenes would have been wasted if I saw them in this quick montage before watching the full movie.
fuck you man, I watch the trailer already and I was looking forward to watch the movie....Now I don't :(
ScXbyZKHD
I am saying the movie is much better than the trailer, it's better not to watch the trailer beforehand, but either way definitely do watch the movie.
But it still made me want to see the movie tho...
I never saw this movie before....one of the teachers who used to come in my bus reccomended this movie to me...and now its coming on a HD channel in a few days..I am SO excited to watch this...i heard this is Miles Teller's best performance
just watched this movie, amazing and thrilling experience. and as much of an asshole Fletcher was, you almost see his point and it just makes you think for a minute. and whoever wrote his insults was a fucking genius hahaha
xxladybug94 watched last night, felt the same intensity. The storyline could appeal to just about anyone. Reminds me of when I was in high school band. Some teachers could really bring you to that point or bring out your very best!
legend has it....hes still drumming to this day
somewhere in heaven like Sean
Just saw it for the first time at a 10 year anniversary showing. Will be re-watched this week
I saw it last night as well! Absolutely amazing
Fletcher would be watching this and say "not quite my line"
Holy crap. I've never really been one for movies similar to this (like, drama and romance and stuff), but I'm REALLY itching to see this one. Like, REALLY.
You should it is one of the best movies this year
Its a must see movie, so great!
Kind of like Black Swan if you remove the hallucinations and add the best villain of the year. Amazing film.
Passion energy and dedication if only every film was as good as this.
Just watched for a second time. It just got better. JK Simmons duly earned his oscar for this performance.
This was the most stress-inducing movie I have ever watched.
0:46 That is clearly not JK Simmons’s voice when they CENSORED it.
This will forever be a masterpiece
“If you don’t have ability, you wind up playing in a rock band” Buddy Rich
Adrenaline starts to flow
You’re thrashing all around
Acting like a maniac
Whiplash!
I love how they cut up the audio to remove the swearing
Wow. Juno's dad gets intense :P
Ginny6789 he should have been like that to his daughter. 😄😄
+Ginny6789 what do you expect he's a Nazi.
He was Vern Schillinger first
+Ginny6789 somebody just need to give him pictures of spiderman to calm him down
+Poi Limpiada that made my day :)
I watched this movie twice, and I thought it was incredible. It is one of the most intense and thought provoking movies I have ever seen.
Im not into these types of movies, but Whiplash was just one of those movies that can just keep you watching and attract any audience. Great movie. Well directed, genius plot, great cast. All the best ingredients.
…Papa Johns
"Get the fuck out of my sight before I demolish you" funniest line in the movie.
Just saw this, and I can easily say this is the best film of the year so far!
It's impressed how this movie makes you as anxious as the main character. It's impossible to not feel like stoping him from playing the drums.
Just saw the movie. One of the most intense films out there and you will not be disappointed after seeing this. 10/10
I love the way this was filmed
2022 and I just watched this. Wish I saw it sooner. My god this movie was powerful!
No doubt that Simmons will get a Best Supporting Actor nimination
Its about time...His body of work is impressive.
Might win
Supporting?? Isn't he a lead?
***** He is categorized under supporting. Miles Teller is considered lead, although he's likely not getting nominated.
Wow that's crazy
Spoiler question: when Jk Simmons says it Miles at the end "I know it was you" does he mean like he knew it was him how told the police woman or does he mean he knows he is his one special student that he was waiting for this whole time?
*to
He knew it was him who ratted him out. Only reason he asked him to be in his band at the end was to watch him fall on his ass cause he didn't know the chart.
Justin Walker right on the money with that explanation! I'd say good job but that's harmful.. awesome job haha.. This movie was the best of the year, hands down
andy candy one thing that was kind of stupid was like why the hell would he want to sabotage his own band at the end?
groalerable he didn't jeopardize the band since they were going to perform something else afterwards.
plus everybody did well apart from the drumming.
The teacher in this movie reminds me of my father. I realize now he wasn’t trying to break me down he was just trying to make me better. Doesn’t justify abuse though. But I appreciate everything he taught me.
This movie is so fucking good.
I know I'm 4 years late but I just watched this movie and it was the most intense movie I've ever seen. Am I the only one who cried during the movie?? I got so overwhelmed with emotions and felt the pressure until I couldn't take it anymore. Also, this movie has the BEST ending ever
This is one of those rare movies that you will want to watch again twenty years from now.
Wow Vern Shillinger is more fucking scary than ever !!
the fact no one gets your comment :/
He tortured Tobias Beecher and now this kid
paddyoclown Shut the fuck up Tobias.
How the fuck did he get out of oz?!
Lord Spacey OZ will do that to you . . .
I added this to my "Greatest Movie" list. One of my favourite films of 2010s. I literally gave this an A+ grade. Damien Chazelle bravo. 👍👍❤❤
My interest for jazz and the drums is growing now.
Drummer here... To be honest... I just jizzed.
lol. yeah man, i drum too. that shit he did was damn fine
To be a top drummer it's really tough, believe me, I remember I use to spend 8 hours a day practicing drums when I was at college and I still don't consider my self a top drummer.
Need to rewatch this ASAP, got goosebumps for the hundredth time!!!
To anybody who's still contemplating wether or not to watch this movie, trust me, it's up your tempo. Fucking watch it NOW.
