I am glad at least the blonde preppy girl didnt turn into a bully or a backstabber "mean girl". Shes just annoying cause her and Kat are not on the same wave link of personalities. When I saw her I groaned cause I thought ok here we go, the popular preppy girls who make fun of the new kid and are bullies to them. But no, she is actually rather pleasant. Annoying, but not bad and does help in the end.
I agree plus she figured out what her parents were up to in fact you could say that the Kaxons are meant to be characters that are meant to show how American prisons function with how the people who own the prisons will usually use the money that they make to pleasure themselves rather than using it to maintain the prison itself and not even allowing inmates to have a chance of reformerty because they are essentially lose money when a prisoner is let out on parole so it would be rather fitting that they end up in one of their own prisons that they owned prior and those inmates they tortured pretty much got their revenge on them
To me you can turn a jerkly character into a likeable one if you give theme moments to see there actions and mistakes but showing How they see if they want to turn themeselfs for the better as Moral kombat Made it clear Johnny cage learn to mature and realize the downside how Hollywood and his fame effected his ego or how Grace realize the downside of her putting herself to impossible standers but also show how one Character who is still jerkly but see things as golden moments to see approvel than it gives people knowing not everyone wants to be helped much like Chole in Miraculous ladybug or Simon in infinity train
I could see it being really well if it was split into multiple 45min-1 hour long episodes. Seems like there is some depth and lore missing that would really make it better.
I agree. I know that they may have done some story editing, but they have just took more time to make the story seem less complicated worth all these characters around
I saw praise for the animation and characters online and was excited to watch the movie and I was impressed with a lot, but I found that the story was getting hard to follow by the end and it was disappointing to see that an otherwise amazing movie had such an unsatisfactory climax and ending
Yup, Jordan peele. Every movie he works on becomes extremely boring or uninteresting. Bc he forces racial commentary into his films over everything else which leads to a movie lacking the necessary meat for a story to be good. He’s a hack writer. He’s only popular bc modern Hollywood loves all that blm shit. And since he openly only hires and writes about black people and refuses anything else, he’s absolutely adored by the producers. He’s literally not subtle about it at all, openly bragging about it in some interviews Edit: pfft lmao so predictable. Trans character, unlikeable black main character, messy plot, that whole women power bullshit, god Jordan peele is a bad writer
@@lordgalaxy1684I don't see anything political at all about a movie about a girl using demons to bring her parents back from the dead?? You're likely referring to the main character being black and there being a trans character, which, if you would go out into the real world for a bit you would see they're actually real people that just exist!! 💕💕💕🥰😊
@@littlemrsmods7998 there is plenty of subliminal political messages in the film you may not notice them since your probably a brainwashed looney toon sure different kinds of people exist but it’s not really about that
Henry Selick is actually very hit-or-miss. For every Coraline he has a Monkeybone. This movie seems to be confused as to what it wanted to be and therefore is compromised. But I haven't seen it...
Monkeybone had an extreme amount of studio interference. Even still, I think it succeeds as an edgy, wacky comedy. W&W doesn’t succeed at much besides the good animation, imho.
I honestly don't think Henry Selick can be blamed for this. All the criticisms he mentioned are very "Jordan Peele writing" criticisms. That's not to say Jordan Peele's a bad writer, but he's clearly going to end up like M Night Shyamalan(which is a real shame).
My comment from bionicpig’s video on the film: I would’ve liked more scenes with Kat interacting with Wendell & Wild. And having each of the demon brothers representing an aspect of her troubles. So her coming to terms with them and befriending them would help her come to terms with her past. Also I feel like they didn’t need the Klaxons. If they wanted to make a statement on private prisons. They could’ve had Buffalo Belzer stand in that role. Wendell & Wild are in a sort of prison at the beginning.
Bionic pig is not the right person to look to for reasonable takes. He’s one of those progressive far left nuts that are responsible for why movies like this suck. They’re obsessed with identity politics and it’s why a lot of this movies writing is just bizarre. He’s trying to find ways to make it relevant to certain socially trendy narratives. Like black power, girl boss, lgbtq, blm, climate change propaganda, etc etc it’s predictable but it’s also boring.
The writing for this movie was better fit for a series. They should have cut down on plots for the runtime for a movie. I feel the Hell Maiden thing was going in the direction of a continuation, as if this was a pilot for it.
It kinda like looking at the New 52 Shazam story at least it made Billy batson reasons for outcasting people work more if you found yourself in his shoes also Black adam worked more as a villain as he was meant to be a dark counterpart for Shazam but also Helping Billy realize his own mistakes and Saw how he was close to becoming like Black adam and even realize him and Adam are almost alike something the first Shazam movie got wrong
I didn’t hate it, but I was still extremely underwhelmed afterwards. It was pretty forgettable, unfortunately. Especially with the main character, not fantastic
Yeah i thought it looked nice , reminded me of coraline (didn’t even know both movies were made by the same person until now so) then after I couldn’t even remember the mc name
Also--sorry to play Devil's advocate here--but Sellick may be a director who works BETTER with a leash. With Coraline, he had people overseeing what he did and making decisions (I personally hated the "face lines" in W&W), and it was based on a novel he didn't write. So he had restraints, but was still able to be creative. On W&W...it's all Sellick, for better or for worse. And I kind of feel like Sellick might be like Don Bluth in that he works better with less creative freedom. There may have been a reason JL was telling him to make changes.
I think part of the fault is jordan peele, he can be subtle or on the nose with his commentaries and here these is him in his less subtle form, this feels like his candyman reboot where he throw every single racist trope on screen
@@motor4X4kombatyeah this is definitely peele’s fault. He favours identity politics over writing. He’s admitted as much in interviews ever since GET OUT came out.
@@BobPantsSpongeSquare97 I could even forgive that, what I can't forgive is the cheesy snowball fight that feels very against the rest of the movie's vibes.
😅 I think because of my autism I really didn't notice thies flaws i just take things as they come sometimes and I had a truly wonderful experience watching this
Usually when I watch films, I have to watch it a least 2 times to start finding mistakes in the writing, but Wendel & Wild was one of the few where I could easily notice the writing was too convoluted and trying to do too much at once But at least it is visually stunning and with great art direction
Another HUGE issue with the plot is the way the council members vote. There is no reason the head of the council had to honor dead voters! If she had just said "zombie votes don't count," the movie would be over.
How have you not done The Book of Life from 2014 yet? It's a stunning stop motion movie dripping in Mexican culture created by Jorge R. Gutierrez. It's a beautiful exploration of Mexican culture and their view of death that predates Disney's Coco by 3 years. I won't spoil the story, but I think you'll love the puppet like character designs and wonderful visual flare. That movie was a passion project and it shows.
The book of life is actually not stop motion, but rather animation mimicking stop motion. Jorge has a very particular artstyle that can be mistaken as such. The characters look like dolls because of the way the story is portrayed.
Also I just need to point this out with the Klaxons getting arrested it does make me question what their daughter's living arrangements are going to be
@@hasturthekinginyellow5003 God that second film was a nightmare (no jokes intended), I've only watched the first 15 minutes of it before passing out of cringe. The Nightmare before Christmas will always be on top with Corpse bride and Frankenweenie to me
Honestly mentioning the faceplate Seams and how it was supposed to be left in, in coralline. I actually kinda wish they did that with the other mother and father, because then it would make it more clear they were unnatural compared to coralline’s real family. Because they’re puppets! That would’ve been such an ingenious way to make a distinction
I liked the movie but I agree that it's missing something. It would have done better as a series. They presented a lot of concepts, but it felt rushed in certain places.
The story was filled with random details that didn't make any sense, the characters were not very likable and the plot overall was so messy and unfocused. I was really disappointed because I LOVE stop motion and Coraline is my favorite movie ever.
You know that? When I saw the trailer I actually thought that Wendell and Wylde were the ones responsible for the car accident, with the "worm" having 2 heads and all that, i thought that the story would be that W&W would try to use Kat to be released from hell.
@hasturthekinginyellow5003 Then there was the painting Rhaoul did that had a two headed dragon thing. Feels like there was something the writers left out.
@@robertbrookes2000 I bet that W&W were supposed to be way more malevolent in the original script, somewhat similar to Pennywise from IT; ever present in that particular town trying to trick "hell maiden" into releasing them from hell, which would be why the nun "trapped" the teddy bear (which is supposedly a sibling of W&W but it's never addressed again?) which is the one that actually brands Kat as a "hell maiden"
The animation is gorgeous, Stop motion is such an amazing form of animation when done right. I even think the story could have been amazing. But the story actually felt rushed and slow at the same time, Like if this were a short film it would have been incredible but as a full length film there just wasnt enough story to fill it out.
I think this movie would have been better as series. Then it would have more time to tell its stories. As movie it was really disoriented and I am really sad that characters couldn't have more growt on them. Animation was beautiful and I hope that creators can do more of it in the future!! 😊
kat having to embrace her inner demon is actually something i can get behind, you can never truly destroy your darker self, its basically like destroying a vital organ, its probably gonna kill you, instead, its like dealing with greif or tragedy, you have to live with it, making you stronger
I hope this is not the end of this franchise. This has the potential to become something really good, it just needs to improve on the story. That Teddy is still a loose thread, so there's definitely a sequel to be made.
Stuff I hope you cover in the future(not in order): “Hoodwinked”(2005) and “Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil”(2011) “Perfect Blue”(1997) “Kirikou and the Sorceress”(1998) “Sanzoku no Musume Roonya”(2014) G1 My Little Pony’s first two specials: “Rescue at Midnight Castle” and “Escape from Catrina” along with the 1986 movie “Unico: Black Cloud and White Feather”(1979), “The Fantastic Adventures of Unico”(1981), “ Unico in the Island of Magic”(1983) and “Saving Our Fragile Earth: Unico Special”(2000) Really enjoy your work, and also wish you’d upload more often, Steve. Then again, quality over quantity as they say…
I watched it after seeing you post this, and I agree. The ending was hella rushed, and Kat's powers were very seldom used. I feel like they should have either cut them out, or used them to their full potential.
I feel the exact same way. I was SUPER excited for it since I love Nightmare before Christmas and Coraline. But I didn't remember anything from the movie, even when you were showing scenes I barely recognized it. The movie was just off and I think you are right about it being all the different plots.
I remember when this was the hype! A PG-13 stop motion movie from the guy who brought Coraline onto the big screen, produced by Jordan Peele?! This movie was looking like a success in the work! Until it came out and now no one talks about it. Kind of a shocking twist how that turned out
The thing i remember most about this movie is that we were watching it with friends, they were on thier second time watch and i had joined mid way through the watched, I asked what the general thoughts were and everyone shared this resentment of dissapointment, For me it was forgettable considering the most prime memory is the fact that i had people around while it was on
I think my biggest problem with the movie is the very first trailer, It made it out to look like a completely different movie than it actually was. Making it look more serious and horror esque despite the movie having more comedy than horror.
When I first saw the trailer, I was really excited to watch the movie. From the stop motion, the actors, the director, and from what the story seemed to be about, I wanted to see this movie badly. Then when I actually saw it... the stop motion was still fantastic, but the story seemed very strange to me. And the climax was very rushed and preachy from what I remember. I was hoping for a new Coraline from the scariness and story telling, but I was kind of disappointed. Happy to have seen it once, but I doubt I'll ever watch it again.
Wendell and Wilde did not follow the Pixar method of storytelling - "Coincidences to get characters into trouble are great; coincidences to get them out of it are cheating". That's why the resolution fell flat, it was a coincidence that all the characters were where they were at the end. The artist didn't purposely lead the giant demon to the roofs to see the picture he did, it just so happened that he was there where he was. Oh, and it so happened that all demons captured in the jars were his kids. I find it a shame, I really wanted to like this movie. I still love the look of this movie, just the story was really weak.
Would love to see you get to the James and The Giant Peach sometime! I saw you comment about it on an old video. One of my favorites, and definitely creeped me out as a kid!
This is such a weird coincidence I started to watch this movie last night and it just, didn't grip me idk. It was confusing bc I'd heard good things about it, so I assumed I just wasn't in the right mood
I felt like I was watching an HBO Velma episode. They focus more on politics than on a good story and a more likable main character. Unfortunately this is exactly what I was expecting from Jordan Peele. It was sadly predictable.
I definitely found the part where Kat chose to defeat her inner demon by not destroying it, but instead embrace it and let stay within her as somewhat endearing.
Yeah I was pretty disappointed in this one. The trailers made me think this would be a Harry Potter meets Beetlejuic meets Paranorman movie, with Wendal and Wild being like Katz mentors and forming a new family with her. Instead, the movie barely has Kat and when it does…..I kiiinda find her mean and just angry and unlikeable!!!!! (And the Villans kinda suck) Also this movie really didn’t earn a PG 13 rating, Coraline was far more scary! This one just says Hell Damn and Piss off alot. 🖤💀
Finally got round to watching this last night. Been meaning to for ages and this video finally gave me the kick I needed. I agree with a lot of what you said. Some heavy rushing at the end. I basically forgot how Kat said goodbye to her parents until you showed me as there was so much going on. The art style I sort of liked. It was interesting how some of characters where modelled after their voice actors. But personally I don't think I like the design of characters mouths jutting out in weird ways, idk just looks odd, and the caricature inspired designs results with that a bit. One thing I thought was weird was how it took Wendell & Wild about half way in to meet Kat. So it kinda confused me how the film kept saying they're her demons when they barely interact with her. I think with all the plot being crammed in, it made me less and less interested, because none got enough time to breathe. As some of the comments I saw said, it would've worked so much better as a TV show. You could've had more mystery around the janitor and the nun, more of Kat adjusting to the school and using her powers. Yeah overall a little weak, but with some fun animation and colours as well as some good topics brought up. The non-reforming prisons and capitalist corporations were decent. I thought Rhaoul being trans was depicted well, it was firmly established that he is, but didn't harp on about it through the rest of the film. Great video as usual!
5:30 Was it also the moment gave Henry Selick PTSD after the Studio's interference with a previous movie that turn into MonkeyBone. You know the movie with Brendan Fraser? That is real by the way. MonkeyBone is an adaptation of a comic call *Dark Town by Kaja Blackley.* Selick wanted to make the comic into a stop motion movie but due Studio Interferences with the many changes, the movie becomes Monkey Bone. Like something passion transform into an abomination. There's only a picture of how Selick originality want it in stop motion with all the figures. Sadly I can't share the photo because the bots.
I'm a big stop motion nerd, but even with amazing animation, I got bored after about 20 minutes. And I did mean to go back to it, but if a movie can't hook me within the first 15-30 minutes, it's not a good sign.
I actually loved it! I’ve been a fan of stop motion since I was a kid watching “James And The Giant Peach” every day tho lol and I like Jordan Peele as a writer. To hear that Henry Selick directed it and Jordan Peele wrote it explains why I liked it lol
The Reveal that the Caretaker has all of Belzer's Children in Jars, it literally got me Dumbfounded. If I found out Humans holding my children as Hostages in Jars I would be piss off. Kat is unlikable but she's not insufferable. And the scenes do work of her trauma, and we show how she grew up fighting other kids ends make her end up into a delinquent. It does work. I understand her. Kat shuts off Raúl with the “They Died” Line and Raúl was like Whoooa. That plays interested in the mysterious person trope. I agree the Optimistic And Cynic dynamic always work. Starfire and Raven, Goku And Vegeta, Spongebob and Squidward, Wednesday and the Werewolf girl that I don't know her name I didn't watch Netflix Wednesday. Plus it would be more organic for Siobhan being Interested in Kat because she just want to be Kat's Friend. Or the Fact Kat saved Siobhan's life by pushing her away from the falling Brick. The Animation is great but the how the story is, it a meh for me. I wonder what the Original Book of Wendell and Wild is like. I wonder if it's different from the movie. Oh yeah Steve, You never mentioned Father Bests. He wants vengeance for the Klaxons killing him. And he died later. So that was pointless.
Know what this film actually makes me reminded of? The cgi animated film "9", which also had a very unique dark premise, beautiful animation, interesting lore, but not really a well paced plot or anything resembling extremely good clever humor or shocking twists to keep one interested. In short form, this story was perfect, and it held up even more so, because it lacked dialogue entirely, like Mad God did, and, it had a much smaller cast, telling just about the same gist of the story. The problem /potential of the cinematic version was, now you basically had to add more character archetypes and more plot points, but where does one stop? And if you have too much plot, then establishing key details or obvious travels from one setting to another, have to be cut for time sake- and in some mediums, like a short film, or a comic/graphic novel, or even a video game, these jumps into one new set after another, or infodumps, work fine, because the viewer absorbs this story very differently. But as a film, our brain pads out everything and thus, it gives "9" almost an effect like you are not watching a completed film, but more like a nearly finished rushed one, or, like one of those compulation videos of every cut scene from a videogame, with all the menus, gameplay and footage of boss battles removed. Wendell and Wild had kind of the same problem, but it stings worse because it has an even more complicated plot than 9 has, and just as many characters, and the plot unlike 9's is ironically both more cliched and far LESS so, so... unlike 9's story which is just your typical 'get macguffin, go on epic quest to bring macguffin to the place, save the world' tale, Wendell has you guessing and wondering and TRYING to piece together a mystery, with results that do not leave an emotional impact as much as they ought to, which is the main driving point of any mystery drama. If I cannot get emotional over the stakes in a mystery, then unravelling doesn't matter and the prizes rewarded to us feel cheap and lazy whenever we do solve them.
I really liked the animation but the story after the half point was boring. The pacing wasn’t too bad but the story wasn’t all that well executed, was hoping for more.
I want my 2 hours back that I spent watching this movie. I saw Luck today, and enjoyed it a lot more. Wendell and Wild was crazy, directionless, and had a message that was all over the place and cliche. Yesss, suree, save the city from evil industrialists, but... the girl just being OK with sending her parents to prison? And these two murdered a family for what, selling real estate? And we are supposed to root for the literal demons because they have daddy issues? And said evil demon dad is just... easily placated and leaves?
Also.... five actual ZOMBIES just meet up at a room... And their vote counts now... Sure the Zombies are here so we think their vote is legit. I.... What? ... That is such a weird move forward. How about... Screaming, running around in circles, grabbing a gun, and then STOP any votes or projects until WE FIGURED OUT WHAT THIS ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE IS ABOUT?!?!?! And then they get to move on with that bulldozing in what? ... Less than an hour? .... I... Also gotta love that the way to save the city at the end was by building a themepark and get the beer brewery back up and running... So.... To save the town from industrialization, we need to have industrialization...... Kay
All i can say, i made myself a demon oc to ship Wendell with 🤣 i genuinely liked it, i loved the Stylelized look it had, But it could've def focus on just her n her demons
I really wish you’d do a video on the 2015 stop motion animated movie Anomalisa. It was written and co-directed by Charlie Kaufman (the guy who wrote Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind), and it’s not really dark or scary, apart from one scene that’s mildly creepy, but it’s definitely not for kids because there’s swearing, nudity and sex in it. I think you’d like it because of those mature elements even though it’s not on par with the movies you usually talk about in your videos in terms of darkness or scariness.
Oh yes i know of the movie the only real creepy thing about the film is that everyone except Michael and Lisa have the same face and voice and Michael is kinda of a scumbag to since you know he cheats on his wife and bought a Japanese sexdoll out of his own selfish intrest and then gives it to his son at the end since he promised to bring him back a gift from Cincinnati though i do love the voice performance from British actor David Thewils as Michael because he does have a cool voice
A very special girl with dyed hair and magical powers who is supposed to be tragic and relatable but just comes off as mean and annoying? Say it ain't so! That has to be its own trope by now. Personally, I don't think supporting a movie just because you want the director to be encouraged to make the movie you *actually* want to see sounds like a good move. Might give him the wrong idea and think that the poorer elements of this movie should make a comeback in the other one.
The animation was great but I found the main character kinda unlikable, to a point where even at the end I was rooting for the bad guys. That might just be me though idk
Oh man! I am so glad I wasn't the only one! This movie was so boring, and the main character so unlikable, I dropped 30 minutes in I couldn't last a single hour in this movie. And I was EXICITED FOR IT
honestly the movie had so much and so little going on at the same time. It felt like the writers had too many ideas and instead of picking one or two, they tried to implement every idea but couldn't fully develop any of them within the timeframe of the movie. It's kinda sad since the animation is really good and the character designs were unique. It had alot of potential but the writing of a movie can make or break it
I had a similar feeling watching this. I went in rather excited to see it, because I'm a sucker for stop motion animation, and the trailer was extremely intriguing. But yeah, afterwards I just felt very underwhelmed. I don't know what it was, but I barely remembered anything that happened in the movie and almost forgot it existed. It just didn't leave that big of an impact on me.
Very nice to see a review that brings up positive and negatives in an even light i would like to see you thoughts on cartoon saloons Irish folklore trilogy
Maybe it's because I live with my head under a rock, but I had next to no expectations going into this movie... and maybe that's why I had a more favorable reaction to the story. I didn't know I was at That Fancy Restaurant and was just happy to be getting A Pretty Steak lmao I do agree it would've been stronger if it had focused more on Kat's recovery and rebuilding, though.
I'm kinda with you on this movie. As much as I enjoyed the work and talent put into this I was a little thrown off by the sudden conclusion and other part of this movie that weren't really needed. Like who they chose as the main villains and all these other subplots crammed into it. BTW, if you do another anime movie review could you review 2021's Belle.
Despite all it's flaws I could'nt not love it. One of my favorite filmmaker, working with one of my favorite film music writter (also made the music for Coraline, and choirs are his specialty), stunning stop-motion, a goth vibe, a trans character (just like me fr) and an openly left-wing message? Physically impossible to not love it.
I never felt the move was bad. Just too much ambition killed it off. And made it forgettable. I never watched it. Just because the animation is good. Doesn’t mean the story will be. And vice Versa with just because animation bad. Doesn’t mean story bad. If your gonna make a series. Focus more on writing than animating but still make the animation as good as possible. be it stop motion/ drawn etc… (I’m only talking about animation. And no I haven’t made an animation series yet. So my advice may not be that good.)
I couldn't say how feasible this would be, considering the costs and nature of creating series, but I feel as though this movie could've benefited from being a series instead. It would allow for far more character and plot development than a movie allows in addition to not feeling anywhere near as rushed. Series can also allow for more varied plots, whereas in a movie so much going on can end up feeling overwhelming and unfocused very easily. I'd say that the biggest flaws come down to there not really being enough time, this would rectify that, if of course done correctly.
@@PrincessMavenKittyDarkholme here's the thing though, if someone treats you like crap, you're going to think they're an asshole for it. If you learn they have a reason to act that way then you yourself kind of start to give them a little slack....this applies to the movie....the fact that even US the viewers didn't know of her backstory until near the end basically just had us go throughout the movie with a "Yeah....can you like lay off a bit cuz you're being a total twat."
sometimes trying hard is the problem. this one was the epitome of just try hard to be quirky, entertaining for kids and preachy about more recycled messages.
That wasn't the issue at all! Did you pay attention at all? The issue was just too many plotlines in a film, could have done with being a series None of the plot points were bad, or trying too hard, or preachy, there were just too many of them
@@beththegreen yeah, they tried too hard to appeal to too many POV, that's exactly my point, they fell flat. And the tired plots is exactly what I mean. Being a series wouldn't have saved it.
The movie was beautiful but the story was really lacking and all over the place jumping from character to character if they had just focused on less characters it could have really been more coherent and worthwhile
Yeah i felt odd that I wasn't enjoying this film despite others saying how good it is and it being made by talented people whom I like. I felt so underwhelm and cheated somehow. Like I fully understand the social commentary they were making and I do think it's important to talk about but yeah it was one too many things. Could've been an offhanded remark that is on the growing list of inhumane actions that helps the daughter see just how terrible her parents are. This could've been better with either less ideas to suit the length or a mini series type length to give the ideas room to breath
I think they could’ve done less screen time with the demons, focused more on Kats trauma and stretched out most of the storyline. Make the demons actually scary. OR Expand with more time and flesh the stuff out more
I love the choice of leaving the slits of the puppets visible. I don’t like the idea of using CG to mask over an art style. They’re puppets, so let them be puppets. Don’t try to hide it.
Maybe the reason why this movie wasn’t the best was because it was impossible to appeal to any audience. If no characters can be related to, then who can you root for? Peele doing the writing or in control of the the story is already problematic, personally. I enjoyed Key and Peele, although as soon as Peele went solo the social climate movie came out.
my dad and I watched this film, it may have been long but we liked it alot. Definitely would like to see Key and Peele provide the new voices for Pain and Panic in the new Hercules, their characters in this reminded me alot of them!

He’s literally not subtle about it at all, openly bragging about it in some interviews
Edit: pfft lmao so predictable. Trans character, unlikeable black main character, messy plot, that whole women power bullshit, god Jordan peele is a bad writer
they were praised for political reasons
@@lordgalaxy1684yea go figure
@@lordgalaxy1684I don't see anything political at all about a movie about a girl using demons to bring her parents back from the dead?? Henry Selick is actually very hit-or-miss. For every Coraline he has a Monkeybone. This movie seems to be confused as to what it wanted to be and therefore is compromised. But I haven't seen it...
Coraline isn't confused at all
Monkeybone had an extreme amount of studio interference. Even still, I think it succeeds as an edgy, wacky comedy. W&W doesn’t succeed at much besides the good animation, imho.
@@opheliebell22 That's not what the OC said.
He was actually saying Coraline is great.
I honestly don't think Henry Selick can be blamed for this. All the criticisms he mentioned are very "Jordan Peele writing" criticisms.
That's not to say Jordan Peele's a bad writer, but he's clearly going to end up like M Night Shyamalan(which is a real shame).
@@opheliebell22 He's saying that Monkeybone is the lesser movie of the two, not Coraline.
My comment from bionicpig’s video on the film:
I would’ve liked more scenes with Kat interacting with Wendell & Wild.
@StrypooMagoothere were reason those characters were put in
Bionic pig is not the right person to look to for reasonable takes.
Yeah
I didn’t hate it, but I was still extremely underwhelmed afterwards. It was pretty forgettable, unfortunately. Especially with the main character, not fantastic
This sums my thoughts up exactly. I really went in wanting to enjoy it, but at the end I just kinda felt like it was...okay
Yeah i thought it looked nice , reminded me of coraline (didn’t even know both movies were made by the same person until now so) then after I couldn’t even remember the mc name
just like the Alita: Battle Angel movie lol
That’s why America has been so 🆖er unice
The character facial designs make me unreasonably angry to look at and I don’t know why. Their shapes and shit just annoy me
Also--sorry to play Devil's advocate here--but Sellick may be a director who works BETTER with a leash. There may have been a reason JL was telling him to make changes.
fair. But Lasseter is a garbage human being.
I agree with you because John Lasseter is a good director and he definitely wouldn't change anything in the movie without a reason
I surprisingly didn't find the movie underwhelming. The only thing that's disappointing about it for me was the climax.
Yeah it felt rushed. Wendel and Wild's father came to Earth, quickly forgave them, and fixed everything
@@BobPantsSpongeSquare97 I could even forgive that, what I can't forgive is the cheesy snowball fight that feels very against the rest of the movie's vibes.
😅 I think because of my autism I really didn't notice thies flaws i just take things as they come sometimes and I had a truly wonderful experience watching this
Usually when I watch films, I have to watch it a least 2 times to start finding mistakes in the writing, but Wendel & Wild was one of the few where I could easily notice the writing was too convoluted and trying to do too much at once
But at least it is visually stunning and with great art direction
Another HUGE issue with the plot is the way the council members vote. There is no reason the head of the council had to honor dead voters! If she had just said "zombie votes don't count," the movie would be over.
As someone who has never seen Wendell and Wild, and only saw the worm-infested zombie at the start, I can safely say that this review was spot on.

I've watched Book of Life.
It had a lot of nice ideas but it was overwhelmingly mediocre imo.

Coraline had the advantage of being a book first. Lots of inspiration to pull from. W&W lacked a cohesive story.
Though unlikely, I wouldn’t mind seeing a sequel if we were to see them improve on it.
No matter how bad life gets it always seems brighter when i see steve upload
I think this movie would have been better as series. Then it would have more time to tell its stories. As movie it was really disoriented and I am really sad that characters couldn't have more growt on them. Animation was beautiful and I hope that creators can do more of it in the future!! 😊
kat having to embrace her inner demon is actually something i can get behind, you can never truly destroy your darker self, its basically like destroying a vital organ, its probably gonna kill you, instead, its like dealing with greif or tragedy, you have to live with it, making you stronger
Found this one by accident on Netflix.
When I watched it, my first thought (30 mins in) was this should have been a series.
I hope this is not the end of this franchise. This has the potential to become something really good, it just needs to improve on the story. That Teddy is still a loose thread, so there's definitely a sequel to be made.
To be honest, considering some of the other stuff on Netflix, this movie is honestly a gift from heaven.
Ironic, isn’t it?

I watched it after seeing you post this, and I agree. The ending was hella rushed, and Kat's powers were very seldom used. I feel like they should have either cut them out, or used them to their full potential.
I feel the exact same way. I was SUPER excited for it since I love Nightmare before Christmas and Coraline. But I didn't remember anything from the movie, even when you were showing scenes I barely recognized it. The movie was just off and I think you are right about it being all the different plots.
I watched this film when it came out and forgot about it about 5 minutes after I finished
I remember when this was the hype! A PG-13 stop motion movie from the guy who brought Coraline onto the big screen, produced by Jordan Peele?! This movie was looking like a success in the work! Until it came out and now no one talks about it. Kind of a shocking twist how that turned out
Well it was hardly even advertised to begin with, only a few trailers and publicity, so its no wonder no one talks about it.
The film was so fast in untying the mystery I think it would have been better as a mini series
The thing i remember most about this movie is that we were watching it with friends, they were on thier second time watch and i had joined mid way through the watched, I asked what the general thoughts were and everyone shared this resentment of dissapointment, For me it was forgettable considering the most prime memory is the fact that i had people around while it was on
For some reason this movie has a special place in my heart because me and my girlfriend watched it together a few days after we got together.
I had the same issue. I got 30 minutes in and then realized I hadn't been paying attention for the last 5 minutes. I just wish the story was better.
If Steve Reviews uploads it’s gonna be a good day
Know what this film actually makes me reminded of?
Those characters look so goofy
I find it interesting that Wendell and Wild's facial designs are similar to those of Key and Peele, considering they are voicing the duo
The animation looks really good, but nothing can save a Jordan Peele film.

Kay

Personally, I don't think supporting a movie just because you want the director to be encouraged to make the movie you *actually* want to see sounds like a good move. Might give him the wrong idea and think that the poorer elements of this movie should make a comeback in the other one.
Saw the trailer and got excited for it. Then I watched it and it felt completely loss and directionless on where to go with the story.

honestly the movie had so much and so little going on at the same time. It felt like the writers had too many ideas and instead of picking one or two, they tried to implement every idea but couldn't fully develop any of them within the timeframe of the movie.
It's kinda sad since the animation is really good and the character designs were unique. It had alot of potential but the writing of a movie can make or break it
Honestly I never heard or watched this movie but from hearing Steve’s point of view of how things would’ve worked for the movie sounds appealing
I do agree it would've been stronger if it had focused more on Kat's recovery and rebuilding, though.
I'm kinda with you on this movie. As much as I enjoyed the work and talent put into this I was a little thrown off by the sudden conclusion and other part of this movie that weren't really needed. Like who they chose as the main villains and all these other subplots crammed into it.

Despite all it's flaws I could'nt not love it.

I actually forgot this movie existed until now. I remember being excited for it when I saw the promo.
I didnt even finish this film.
You're lucky
I'm sure everyone loves you
I honestly forgot this stopmotion movie was even a thing.
You would think that something so epic, so unique, that I would remember a single frame from this movie.
I'd say that the biggest flaws come down to there not really being enough time, this would rectify that, if of course done correctly.

as in every depthless piece of poorly thought out drivel the racist self loathing comedian has been praised endlessly for shitting out on screen.
That wasn't the issue at all! Did you pay attention at all? The issue was just too many plotlines in a film, could have done with being a series
None of the plot points were bad, or trying too hard, or preachy, there were just too many of them
@@beththegreen yeah, they tried too hard to appeal to too many POV, that's exactly my point, they fell flat.
And the tired plots is exactly what I mean. Being a series wouldn't have saved it.
I liked it for the artistic animation, however the story had too much going on so I agree with that.
Glad I am not the only one who thought this
The movie was beautiful but the story was really lacking and all over the place jumping from character to character if they had just focused on less characters it could have really been more coherent and worthwhile
I actually forgot this movie existed until I saw this pop into my feed, if that tells you my thoughts on the movie.
If I’m being so fr, I agree the plot was a lot but I also feel like it’s lowkey having to do with racism why ppl hate it so much
Maybe the reason why this movie wasn’t the best was because it was impossible to appeal to any audience.
