I really appreciated and enjoyed the movie. I just think the story is a little clunky and I don’t feel like some of the character moments are earned. I wish the nun lady’s past was explored more and the Hell Maiden thing had some lore to it. BUT I still liked the movie

Yeah, and the movie felt a lil bit rushed when it came to the story, but I love it so much because of the representation, the blk hairstyles that Kat has, and Raul being a QPOC makes it better for me as a afro-latnix QPOC myself

@@oranplan1630 I think all the unresolved plotlines made it feel too long because it feels like we spent time focusing on people in meandering scenes. There is a reasonable idea a shorter film might have made it tighter and forced them to cut the fat of the film which is as reasonable as the idea a series instead of a film would have allowed an expansion on concepts.
Either way, I don’t think a longer film would help. It either needed a series or to cut some characters and be a shorter more concise film.

I wish they had formed more of a bond with kat and Raul, for me it just kinda felt forced that he was running around helping her for no real reason other than being there for the plot. I don’t feel like Kat really earned his help. I did like that they go against expectations, you’re first introduced to the preppy kids and you think its going to be a bullying ‘mean girls’ type situation, but they actually end up being a huge (but annoying) support from the off. I was underwhelmed as i feel like there was a lot of filler and not enough fleshing out of the story, but as you said, it scratched that stop-motion itch and its nice to see that Henry selick might be back.

YES! I came down here to say this! It should have been a series for sure! I mean they gave Riverdale like 10 season and that show was getting crazier and crazier and literally making zero sense. And I really wish they would have given this a chance. I completely agree that this needed to be a series. I want to know more about the hell maidens, I want to know more about sister Helen, I want to know how the powers work! I want to know more about the demons in general. Even just a miniseries I feel like would have been great. Even just like four to six episodes would have made a huge difference. It's possible that Jordan was busy and couldn't do a series you know? And it's also possible Netflix didn't have enough faith in this series. Unfortunately I think they explained everything and it wouldn't make sense for there to be a series now. Because it's shown there were literally only a handful of demons and they weren't evil. So it's not like they have evil demons to fight anymore.

So when I heard about Wendell and Wild, I got excited because it was like ok Burton doesn’t want us in his movies so we’ll make our own. • The two headed worm
      • Raúl's mural
      • Kat's vision of the Prison
      • The new brewery sign
If we're going into more figurative signs you get others like the Pastor, The group home Kat sees when facing her demons.
So it feels like there was some theming that was just oddly cut out in some form.

    1. That is a goat, not a cat.
    2. There's 3 times Kat uses her power. The second time is when she's stealing the bear. She sees a hand and hears "thief!". It was pretty quick but yeah. Rule of threes, baby!
I think the story's main issue is the lack of worldbuilding. A lot is narrated, or literally shown to us via shadows. That's the main difference between this and Coraline, I think.

I got to see this movie at a film festival a few weeks ago, and Henry Selick came out after and did a Q&A about the movie. Which….ARE YOU KIDDING???? I GOT TO SHAKE HANDS WITH HENRY SELICK??? Still so stoked about that. He said with Raoul that he created this character (a boy who feels alienated by the other characters) to be friends with Kat, but needed a reason for him to be in an all girls Catholic school. He said the transness of the character felt like a natural solution, and that is what I love about him. Like you said, it’s handled in a way that is casual and realistic. On top of all of that, Henry was just overall a really smart and kind dude, and since I was in an audience of animation students like myself, we were all so grateful for him to take the time to come speak with us personally. He handled every question and interaction with grace, and I really hope to see more from him. Hopefully he feels inspired after seeing hundreds of film and animation students cheer for him and his work in a live setting. ❤

If you’ve payed attention there is a scene where Raul’s mom is on the phone and corrects the person she’s calling that she has a son, so that would imply that her strong support was a big factor in Raul accepting he’s trans and not being afraid to approach it further, for example getting a haircut and having a custom school uniform.

It just made me uncomfortable listening to something with those lyrics after following a young protagonist for over an hour. I love that Raul’s mother is a safe space, even down to correcting the person on the phone that she had a son and not a daughter. We love supportive parents 💙
I also have an idea about the Hell Maiden route that the movie didn’t fully get into, but was implied.. Hell Maidens are born through severe trauma. And their powers might also stem from how they coped. Helley’s trauma made her reclusive and shy away. Becoming more depressed and “disappear”. Her powers allow her to shrink away and slip into the shadows, as a result… with Kat, her trauma stems from loss. Losing her parents, and having a desire for preventing bad things from happening again, resulted in foresight which would allow her to change that fate..
The term Hell Maiden is fitting. You go through hell, and it’s up to you to cope, go through therapy, and redeem that trauma. To own your fears and sorrows and to not shun it, but to accept it, as hard as some triggers may be.. and sometimes, it’s hard not succumbing to the darkness of grief. Which is why Kat giving into her grief and activating the mark tries to force her to follow through. Because it’s that desire to go back and start over that kept her from moving on.
And it’s true. Everyone has demons, but it’s up to us to accept them and move forward.

I was initially put off a bit by the line left on the puppets' faces, but it grew on me when I realized it was an intentional imperfection. This is something that I really appreciated in the movie "Wolfwalkers", where the scenes in the forest often leave the sketch layer of the animation to represent the "wilder" side of the world.

All together, yes I agree the first watch was very confusing with so much going on between the characters that it was hard to follow, and there was a lot of context missing--specifically to relating to Kat's past trauma, but the art and animation was beautiful and creative. Again, a fantastically detailed stop-motion film and it has a gay character that you HAVE NO IDEA IS GAY because that's not the point! True, it may have been done for a joke at the end but HE was never the joke, HE was never the butt of the ha-has, it was the sister who was joked upon, and he was a great character on his own. LGBTQ+ representation isn't about "HEY WE HAVE A GAY/TRANS CHARACTER IN HERE LOOK AT HOW PROGRESSIVE WE ARE", it's just treating them as the human beings that they are. They're human, they're real characters, just treat them like real characters. All of the characters are great in ParaNorman and now Imma go watch that movie again, brb....

I feel like they could have mix Kat and Raul in one character to try to tie stuff better on the story would be better. Cuz Raul solved a bunch of kat's problems from being the one bringing her parents back, to solve the demon's problem with their dad by touching his emotions with art. Plus, Raul had a backstory with the friendly blonde girl with the rich parents, it would be nice if the girl started to question her parents because of what her old friend told her, would be a nice way for them to become friends again and oppose her parents destroying the city
Having Kat and Raul being one single character would probably also give us more time to explore the hell maiden and the nun who helped Kat
