  • The U.S. Navy and Army blasted off a rocket from a seaside launch pad in Virginia to test nearly a dozen hypersonic weapon experiments on Wednesday (October 26) to help develop the new class of weapon, the Pentagon said, calling the test successful.
Sandia National Laboratories ran the test from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, which evaluated hypersonic weapon communications and navigation equipment as well as advanced materials that can withstand the heat in a "realistic hypersonic environment," according to a Navy statement.
Hypersonic glide vehicles are launched from a rocket in the upper atmosphere before gliding to a target at speeds of more than five times the speed of sound, or about 3,853 miles (6,200 km) per hour.
The United States and its global rivals have quickened their pace to build hypersonic weapons - the next generation of arms that rob adversaries of reaction time and traditional defeat mechanisms.
To speed the development the Pentagon launched these experiments and prototypes using a sounding rocket, a smaller and therefore more affordable test vehicle, to fill a critical gap between ground testing and full-system flight testing.
Wednesday's test was intended to validate future aspects of the Navy's Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) and the Army's Long Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW).
Glide bodies are different from their air-breathing hypersonic weapon cousins, which use scramjet engine technology and the vehicle's high speed to forcibly compress incoming air before combustion to enable sustained flight at hypersonic speeds.
Companies such as Lockheed Martin Corp and Raytheon Technologies Corp are working to develop U.S. hypersonic weapon capability.

Yup! If anyone has really been paying attention. Notice how everytime Russia test a nuclear weapon, they either brag or threaten with it. Ever wonder why the U.S. never talks or brags about its nuclear capabilities?
      1. It's a sign a weakness. Something that Russia does over and over
      2. No one truly knows the extent of the U.S. nuclear capabilities and they prefer it that way but Russia has some idea of just exactly what they are which is the exact reason for all the bragging about nukes that Putin and the Kremlin has done...has not dared launched not a strategic, tactical or even a dirty nuke.

Believe me we have hypersonic missiles with capabilities that are decades ahead of our adversaries. Military just doesn’t broadcast it.
Remember months ago when the Russians realized they weren’t going to take over Ukraine in a week like they thought and Putin started to talk about nuclear weapons and all of a sudden the Russian flag ship missile destroyer in the area was severely damaged by two missiles ?

That wasn’t the Ukrainians with conventional missiles, that ships early warning missile defense system never saw those missiles coming. That was the Americans with some very advanced weapons systems and it was done to send a message to Putin to let him know just how advanced our weapons are. At this time, the Pentagone wanted a weapon that can lets them to strike anywhere in the world from US territory But in 2012 they suddenly cancelled the program Idk the reason but it was maybe from Obama administration.
Journalist said that they lost one of their HTV in pacific ocean while a test and they never found it. They probably cancelled the Falcon program after that. The design of Russian hypersonic missile, Avangard, that was revealed in 2019 looks identical to the HTV2, woth the same specification. Its a weird coincidence? @@LibbyTarde It is new technology. A lot of people in these comments are misunderstanding what is meant by the new coining of the term “hypersonic missiles”. When militaries and governments talk about hypersonic missiles now, they aren’t referring to missiles that can go hypersonic, we as well as other nations have had that technology since the 60s. The new term hypersonic missiles refers to missiles that can achieve and maintain hypersonic speeds while also being to maneuver to intercept or destroy a strategic target. The US has only been able to successfully test these new hypersonic missiles within the past year, before that they were unsuccessful

As far as I know, the ram jet system can only work after the rocket reaching a very high speed. To achieve this, the rocket was launched to exosphere and then let it free fall and gaining the necessary speed to activate the ram jet. Once it is activated, then the rocket can travel at much higher than the speed of sound (couple of machs). Basically the weapon will be unstoppable by any conventional weapon, except with laser cannon (no reliable weapon yet existed yet).

If we are such thieves, explain how we had operational strategic bomber in 1943, the B-29;, it is not a mistake that when you look at the Tupelov Tu-4 you see a plane that was reverse engineered from 3 planes that landed in Vladivostok… when did the Soviet’s field their stealth planes? That’s right, they didn’t, even the Russians have yer to field one, yet our F-177’s were operational in 1983, Our B-2 Stealth bomber was flying by 1989, when did the Russians field their first operational Stealth Bomber? When did they form their first squadron? Oh yea, it’s almost 2023 and the can’t, so that means it has been 34 years since the planes began flying in our 509th Bomb Squadron and still nothing. Yes, the US and other nations have had weapons that are able to go hypersonic since the 60s, but the different today is that when we talk about hypersonic weapons, we’re talking about ones that can actually manoeuvre itself towards a strategic destination. This isn’t something that has been done by the US until the last year or so. Russia claims to have had this technology for a couple years now but it’s actual effectiveness is debated. Their air to air missile technology also is claimed to be very incredible as well, although again they are very discreet about their true reliability and have not been combat tested.
I think if we’re going to apply the argument of “combat tested” to China, we must also apply it to many other nations unbiasedly. While the US has a lot of experience, in recent years it has been extremely rare or flat out non existent to see air to air combat between two latest generation aircraft. We can’t for certain say that all of our fighters and pilots are definitely the best until that day (hopefully never) comes. You know with these defense industry rockets, most of the time its a solid fuel engine (for reliability). Sometimes they come up with a new fuel type. Probably its the guidance system that is new, basically the electronics. Other than that, im not seeing a very different thing than all the rockets that have come before. Probably its the best of its solid fuel type. With the most modern electronics. It can also be the case that this rocket is cheaper to produce than other types. Or simply because they needed more rockets; why not develop a new one. So that if the time came that a lot of new weapons would be needed, the engineers of this generation knows how to pull it off. So its a great thing, and it is reassuring to see that the guys and girls can pull this feat off.
    Congratulations!
    Greetings,
    Jeff
