GREAT video - too many so-called experts make these guys sound impossible to keep - you gave all the positives and mentioned the only real negative (in my opinion) --- "predatory instincts". They do love their live food. Did I mention GREAT video???

Whelp...I WAS going to set these guys up in my 40 breeder shrimp tank...but as you said they would be snack snack snacking and chasing the shrimp 24/7...(got to somehow sneak another tank into the house) LOL

I've been keeping a single male in a 5.5 gallon planted nano tank (the little guy in my avatar). I've noticed he enjoys snacking on snails. In fact, he even nipped an assasin snail to death. His favorite food so far is black worms.
Super cool little fish with lots of attitude and very entertaining.

Thanks so much for putting this video together! I saw these guys at one of my local fish shops today and was super impressed by how beautiful they are. I think they're a bit outside of my current ability -- but definitely a species I will consider for when I'm ready to start culturing my own live food.

Absolutely without a doubt one of my most favorite fish to keep! "Sassy" is totally appropriate! Great spotlight, Rachel!

I love them. I had two for about two months or so in a well-planted tank full of mosses and java ferns. I fed them live grindals and frozen brine shrimp from a glass eyedropper. They learned that the dropper meant food, and rushed up to eat when they saw it. They seemed super healthy and active, but then one suddenly died for no apparent reason. A month later, the other just disappeared. I assume it died and the trumpet snails munched on the carcass overnight. :(
When I bought them, they were an obvious dominant red male and a very pale "female". The "female" became extremely bright red several days after I brought them home, so it was a male that was lower in the pecking order in the store's tank that felt more confident when in my tank.

In the pet store these look dull but when they get used to the tank they glow fire red. I noticed that seems to apply to most colorful fish. These really act like gouramies and seem to be more brave; they don't run away from the light or anything.

  • @beansproutnow

My badis went into my tank and instantly they took a taste to my pond snails! Unexpected but fascinating -- plenty of shrimp fry in there too, it's not an act of desparation/hunger (I hope). Guess I won't have trouble finding live food to entertain them!
They have absolutely 0 interest in adult shrimp or my Phoenix rasbora, so they seem perfect for my little ecosystem.

Truly exquisite little gems.I'd love to have a clear image of a confirmed adult female, just to have a known comparative image to refer to. Only once have I had any of these fish that I could be reasonably sure were actually female.
I fed them fruit fly larvae, micro and black worms, and brine shrimp. I also used to keep a population of scuds in their tank, as an 'in house' food supply they could hunt anytime they chose to. Over a period of time, they would learn to accept things like canned cyclops & frozen food items.

You and me both, I just don't buy that females are not exported. Too affordable of a fish for that to be the case. I have sold groups based on behavior that have spawned for folks.

I have followed you for a long time. Enjoy your channel. Keep up the great work. Question for you. I have a few planted tanks, misc fish. No problem. I want to now do my 75 gallon tank. I would like to do a all out rainbow tank. Most all rainbow. They say their water calls for a phone of 7.0. My water (tap) is 7.8. How can I reduce my tap water prior to adding fish? Once I have it at 7.0 I can buy bottled water. 75 gallons of bottled water would cost me well over $200. All else fails I may have to do this, but looking for a cheaper way for starting this 75, with all plants, rocks and driftwood. Any idea?

Hi Rachel. Hope you had a great christmas and new year. Went to my lfs today not planning to buy any fish but came home with six of these little guys. One has obvious stripes and the others are all very pale. None have the striking red colouration. At the ps they had dropped flake food into the tank which hadnt been eaten. They didnt have any live foods in for sale. The tank I have mine in now has a lot of pest snails and shrimp. I assume that they will eat baby shrimp. But will they eat snails? I will have to wait for the lfs to get some live foods in. Any suggestions in the short term for these babies?

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  6 років тому +1

they don't generally eat snails. Microworms, baby brine, daphnia, or anything that moves (even chopped blackworms) can work as live food. SOMETIMES they will take frozen baby brine.

What’s the secret to keeping these fish alive (water parameters anyone and diet)? I have ample experience keeping fish, but not this species, however, I did get a half dozen and they lasted about 3 days. Worst experience ever. Spoke with the LFS that sold them to me and he wouldn’t work with me so I took a loss and didn’t want to try another go with these fish and this particular LFS, but I do think these fish look amazing otherwise and I would really like to give it another go once I figure out what the “ideal” water parameters are.

I've read that they will, but can have obesity problems with those and tubifex. I am not sure that's true, but something to think about.
