Dear Daniel: When I noticed that you keep Dario dario, I was hopeful you would do a species profile on this, lovely fish. I must say I am very impressed. You are doing an amazing job of keeping yours heathy and happy and I love the setup. Thank you for producing this, interesting and informative video. Your, camera work and dialogue are superb. All my best, Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar
Your species profiles are fantastic, super thorough, and I really appreciate the behavioral observations! Great to see the female and the subdominant male together to easily see the difference. Great video! 🙂👍👍
Thanks very much Tara. Real nice of you to make those observations about my videos. I tend to think about what I want from a video and do my best to achieve that so your comments really do mean a lot.
What a great spotlight! I've kept these before, but have faced a couple of challenges. - you are bang on with pH parameters. My water is about 8 in the tank and the Badis I had were nowhere near as red and vibrant as yours. They only lasted about a year. Not for harder water. -feeding. They just seem to get out-competed for food. A dedicated tank is better for these. They hang around the bottom quarter of the tank, but mine wouldn't eat food once it hit the substrate (yours seem to) Really great looking and entertaining fish.
Thanks very much Andreas. My water is soft which makes it hard to know how they'll react to harder water so thanks for adding that and the other points from your experience of keeping them. I normally drop the food in front of the filter return so the current spreads it about. Otherwise the Rasbora would no doubt gobble up most of it before it makes it's way to the lower level. Plus I must admit I have a tenancy to over compensate and feed heavier that I should which is not necessarily advisable. I find if they see the food moving or wiggling they're quite happy to grab it from the substrate but once it's out of sight it's out of mind.
3:23 I have two of these and one stays down below and one likes to stay up top near the floating plants. Every now and then they well be together but they like to be separate
These fish are probably one of my favourite fish despite never owning them before 😂 Nice profile review! Gonna head back to this video when I eventually get some
I own two of these, they are super duper hardy. I "lost" one of them, didn't see him for like a month only to turn up later. Probably got stuck in its cave or something, I thought he died somewhere. He was super skinny but once he ate some worm he got back to normal in like 3 days. Also there was that time when one of them "choke" on worm, somehow he managed to hunt an oversized worm that had grown inside the tank. He swam upside down and I tried to pull the worm unsuccessfully, but a moment later he managed to swallowed everything. Both of them are still going strong now, I'll be owning them for exactly one year next month. I like how the dynamic between the two, the position of the dominant male changed several times between them. I want more but unfortunately they are super hard to find and it's impossible to get a female.
Fantastic video, thanks! I read somewhere they like black water, haven't found anything confirming that. Should I put leaf litter in the tank? I'm putting mopani wood in as well (but it seasoned).
Thank you. Yeah I'd say they'd appreciate that. I'd maybe build it up slowly if you already have them or acclimate them slowly if you're just getting them and adding them to you black water tank but I think they'll appreciate that for sure.
@@DanielKeepingFish Okay thanks! Im a longtime fish keeper, have had these fish in the past (and present) but never heard they like leaf litter! Is there any way I could buy a female from you?
Thanks for all the info. And pictures to show what you mean. Very helpful for me to work out if my 2 “females” are in fact a pair of dominated males. I have 3 and one is very definitely male.
Mine had a peculiar behavior. Very nutty around feeding time. Seemed to prefer frozen brine shrimp. Got extremely stressed if not given the 'right' stuff, up to the point of jumping out of the tank. Returned safely (so I thought) to the tank. After 48 hours, disappeared - not sure what happened to it(maybe some of the shrimp murdered him in his sleep 🙂). In my mind, I have a nagging feeling this fish committed some kind of suicide. Realy crazy attitude.
Oh wow I'm sorry to hear that. A lot of fish could be considered jumpers but these would be way down that list for me. I guess there are exceptions to every rule.
Ah mate I hope they become available near you at some point. Such a great little fish. Smaller than the fish you normally keep but much bigger in personality than their small stature.
I work with dogs, so the term prey drive gets thrown around a lot. First time hearing it in fish keeping lol. Love it. They remind me of the elasoma Gilberty I keep in fl
Thanks very much Alison. Definitely a fish worth trying at some point for anyone who enjoys smaller fish. Long as feeding live food isn't an issue right enough.
@@DanielKeepingFish had the issue of feeding with the peacock gudgeon. Was bit of a challenge getting them to eat other stuff. I'll maybe ask tropco as saw the scarlet badis on their site.
@@alisonnicholson yeah they have the Scarlet and the Blue just now and a listing for females. As I said it's hard to tell when they're so young but that's where I got mine. I ordered six and three of them are definitely female, I don't think the other three are.
Hi mate. Great video. Very helpful. Couple of questions. Would they still exhibit the same behaviour with the 😮other badis. Also, are they ok as a single or should get a few. Cheers mate
Honestly I haven't kept them with other Badis so I couldn't say 100% but I'd imagine so yes. Often fish do better in groups but going on how territorial they are and that they generally only interact with other male to intimidate them away from their patch I'd say you could keep one on it's own fine.
I have one Badis ...he's definitely a super predator. Just watching him hunt, and his tactics is like watching a stalker in action. Feed live food. BBS works well. They won't eat flake. They are hunters!
The tiger badis I have deen on the internet have been dark vibrant orange with fark black diagonal stripes or checkerboard on their ides. qith blue/white highlights on the dorsal and ventral fins.
Very beautiful the scarlet badis tiny predators are so interesting when they hunt, I wonder if scuds would make a good food for them?? Stunning tank Daniel🙂👍🏻
Some people have got them to eat frozen and even dry but it's tricky. They have a strong predatory drive so I think seeing the food move appeals to them.
@@DanielKeepingFish Yea colors are really popping since he got acclimated, beautiful, been in the hobby for a very long time, never came across these for some reason
Lovely fish. Would they be suitable for a 125 L tank with 5 garra flavatra, a retarded betta and 15 cpd. heavy planted and lot's of wood and stone structure. I have 900L/ h filter
9x turnover seem a lot for these little fish but if they can find dead spots in the scape and plants and your Betta is doing fine with that much flow they could be okay. They'll be fine with the CPDs. The Panda Gara can be a bit boisterous but I've found that's generally in terms of wanting their own space and if other fish give them that they're generally okay. It's the Betta I'd be most worried about. It'll be a 50/50 depending on the personality of your Betta but again if they've got plenty of hiding spaces and places to get away from that fish it might be worth trying it with a back up plan in place. The challenge I feel you'll have is feeding them. They do much prefer smaller live food but maybe a turkey baster as a delivery system could be your friend here.
@@DanielKeepingFish thank you so much for responding. i desided to get some bigger fish and sell the cpd. Got the betta in another tank aswell. Do you have any fun fish that are around 10 cm that would be fun with garra
My favorite fish. Finally found a female that I bread and I now have 7 females, waiting for a few of the others to grow to sex them. Time to set up a few more tanks to breed.

@@DanielKeepingFish no the scarlet badi.
My scarlets like to be together but they stay separated most of the time, one up top near the plants and one below near the tree
