This is some footage that I confirmed- shows 2 Dario dario/ Dario Bangaleses AKA Scarlet Badis spawning in a neocaridina blue dream shrimp tank. This is a rare event to actually catch on film and I hope you all enjoy this nano aquarium dream fish with behaviors similar to cichlids from Africa or the Amazon. I like to call this the "poor man's nano cichlid". I joy of a fish to care for and breed. Now we will have to see if they can raise their own eggs into fry and refrain from eating them. As I would much prefer a spawning couple that can learn to live with their young, even if they eat the first few spawns. It makes my job in the fishroom all the more simple.
Give them a habitat rich in microscopic organisms, plankton, seed shrimp, daphnia and algea, sit back and watch them color up in a beautiful crimson red and icy metalic blue. Each male creates a territory and den or cave, decorated and defended. Here you will see their mating ritual, the chase and follow, hunting together and more, all in a 20 minute unedited clip.

Yeah, as long as the tank is cycled and there's no ammonia or nitrates over 30 ppm or so, it's a perfect type of tank for nano fish... it brings out their colors. Most people don't realize that fish have hunting colors, and often times they are quite beautiful. I hope you're doing well my friend. cheers.

Your videos on Scarlet Badis helped me a ton - I suspected I had a female but it was confirmed recently when I found ONE scarlet badis baby in my fry tank. Now it has grown into adult size and I am confident that it is another female! Now I have found another small fry. These are my favorite fish! I know you said fry appear near the mulm but both tiny brown fry appeared in floaters at the top of the tank, which I find interesting!
Interesting ...perhaps the parents chased them off? Let me know how it goes in the future. They're a fish I've been working with for 5 years nonstop now and they still throw me curve balls. I am now confident that given bad water conditions or too much stress from males, the females can switch sex to also be male and fight back... ive had pairs spawn...then turn both male...the split them up with 2 tanks and new females....only to have both males spawn again!

First of all, thank you kindly. And secondly- yes there are about 5 or 6 left out of 15 or 16 fry. They tend to develop at several different rates every spawn. The oldest ones (6 months look mature and are almost an inch long and in a community tank now) but their siblings are still the size of a kernel of a sunflower seed.. even though they both were raised the exact same way. Im guessing that in the wild, they grow at a few speeds and then if the rainy season is late or the monsoons end up over flooding rivers- there is a second and or third opportunity for the babies to wait it out and wait for the rain to make their ponds or tiny mud puddles over flow and connect back with larger bodies of water. (Total guess)
But badis and sparkling gouramis are hellacious eaters of newborn shrimp haha. Ive watched one adult badis eat about 9 babies in 5 minutes. Literally until it looked like a cartoon of a full fish. So i really try and poke around to move them at half an inch in size

oh thanks, it's not scaped or even well lit. but it keeps chugging along. My whole philosophy is keep it dirty and full of algea/"pests" that arent harmful and plankton, but squirting water from all my other tanks into it monthly

just saved 5, stuck them in my swordtail birthing tank, and they are doing awesome and things seem peaceful for a start watching them hunt every rock and the fry and just checking them out

Can scarlet badis be kept alone. Can I keep one male. With schools or chili rasboras. CPDs. Pygmy corys and clown killifish in a 20 gallon ?
excellent content. Have been on a waiting list for months for these. Have to travel 2 hours to get there. Picked some up on my local buy and sell today. 7 of them. In quarantine. Going in a 120 gallon. Well planted with 30 Kubotai rasbora and 22 pygmy cories. And about 200 blue dreamy shrimp. They better get munching on those shrimpletts. that's the plan! I recently introduced 10 tiger badis into a 130g mature community tank with otos, Rummynose tetras, Neons tetras and Amano and neocaridina shrimps.
My question is do I really need to worry them being out competed for food by the other fish or they might be fine eating shrimplets and nematodes and whatnot?
I do not clean the tank too much. As in I let some algae and stuff grow.
They should be fine...they do hunt planaria, seed shrimp, plankton, algae and any eggs or fry that your tetras and stuff make, so as long as everyone else is well fed, it should work out. I like to feed a bit after lights out also though....just so fish like that can eat a bit more relaxed also

I purchased two badis at my lfs thinking one was female and the other male. As soon as the fish settled in later that day the “female” showed reddish stripes. Now they’re trying to breed and I think they’re both male. Where did you get your female? Love the vids man.
They are found in several color in the wild. I have seen scarlet,green,blue & black in the wild. They are found in Bangladesh, India & Nepal. You have a good set up for the badis in your tank, in the wild they live in similar type of environment.

@@Fishtory sorry to say that I don't have any picture of them. I saw them about 25 years ago in a district of Bangladesh, at the time I was involved in the business of exporting wild caught aquarium fishes to Germany. I don't have any idea whether those natural habitats are still exist or not. I live in the USA now, if I get a chance to visit Bangladesh, will try to get some pictures of them. Thanks

And yes, in my non-communal or show tanks I keep them all natural. its good for water quality, good for biodiversity and I think it looks nice and not oddly out of place like painting it blue or whatnot.
How many would you recommend for a 10 gallon? I was thinking 2 males 3 females, but there seems to be little info online about size requirements for multiples :) the tank is heavily planted and I plan to add loads of botanicals on the floor
Yup leaf litter or lots of plants/rocks and that would work fine probably. Once in a blue moon, a male goes wild and kills all the other males...but it's like 1 in 10 fish I've owned that do that

100% and yes to all your questions! Enjoy. Theyre very cool micro predator fish...bugs and worms dont stand a chance...other fish...dont usually notice them lol

they can do well with rasboras or tiny fish, but guppies or really fast eaters will out compete them...so if you did keep them with guppies, try and feed them on one side with food that sinks somewhat...while guppies feed uptop

Yes, I've had both species in planted tanks on several occasions :) look up lake Inle species or hillstream species from thailand/Laos or Malaysia, and most fish under 2 inches do fine with them. They stay at the bottom and or in a corner or cave as a "nest" or home territory....and generally only leave about 6 inches or so from their claimed area in the tank

Whoa! Very cool! I would feed them baby brine shrimp, daphnia, or wingless fruit flies for fish and reptiles (or catch any small mosquito larvae or little bugs that fit in their mouth) ideally. But if you can't hatch or buy live food, then frozen Daphnia, frozen small brine shrimp, or mysis shrimp. Sometimes you can get them to eat normal fish food (fluval bug bites small tropical granules, I found works sometimes too...or flakes of fish fish that has been ground into tiny pieces

Do they eat the baby shrimp? I have a pair of them in my 40 but I have a 8 that’s full of microorganisms and only has shrimp but I was worried they’d eat the babies
they will eat some but only the ones under about a month old...so give shrimp some thick moss or susswasseetang to hide in, or even some piles of rocks with gaps for the baby shrimp and I'm guessing you'll lose maybe 3 out if 10 new babies ? something along those lines
The Secret History Living in Your Aquarium ok awesome I’ve got a matte of subwassertang and java moss mixed together that’s like 3” thick covering the bottom of the aquarium
So how do you go by picking out a good pair do you have some available
well first of all, you look for the boldest, biggest and most active male in a tank (there may be one in each corner at a pet shop that's crowded) ...then just get that one for sure, and any females will do (however having 4 or 5 females to a Male is best, because he will pair off with one in particular...then you can grab those two out and let them just bond and mate...or let him decide if the other females are up to his standards...he may have as many as 3 or 4 nests at a time if given the selection and proper planted tank, and hide out - rich environments.
then you can take the left over females and introduce another Male (who ever is the one chasing the others around and that has bright blue stripes and blood red pigmentation- to the left over females.... over time most pairs or trios will work out, however a pair is always better for fry survival rate and aggression.
lastly, I do sell some females...I have 2 or 3 adult extras currently, and they usually go for about 20 for adults and 40 for a female who laid eggs successfully with her male... the males are 4 bucks a piece.
However I'm not shipping right now due to temps. in late spring I'll likely resume shipping

infusoria is exactly what you'll need to do if its not a tank like this one. I love this tank because under the microscope there are at least 4 dozen species of plankton, worms and micro crustaceans... however if I had more fish in here, I'd need to supplement the microbiome population...and honestly, just tossing in boiled brocolli for 4 or 5 days will do that

They eat baby shrimp from time to time, but love Brine Shrimp much more... so if you can feed Daphnia or baby brine... the baby shrimp seem to hide a lot better and About half or a third of the babies survive despite living with badis

oh well I'd go for some lilies (theyll spread nicely), id definitely do some corkscrews valesenaria aka "Val", .....then you could do water lettuce to keep the nitrates down, but you'll need to scoop out some if they cover too much of your view. Next I'd think of hearty plants like cabomba carolinia, rotolas and bacopa carolinia, all plants that will spread by cutting their stems, and they all can survive big temperature changes. I think honestly visiting local lakes or ponds and grabbing cattails, or whatever is growing in the muddy 2 foot deep or so areas- that should do really well in a pond since those are all already thriving in your climate cycle. Along one edge I'd add either java moss, pearl weed, guppy grass or something that gets dense and grows fast (water spite or wisteria may also work) for your fry to hide in...Also something like the lily pads or lotus is a good for hiding the adults from birds or raccoons etc.

they can, but theyll be stressed...the curious baby guppies go pester them and inevitably get bit and chased ...they are in one of my guppy tanks, but I put corydora habrosus and ruby tetra also in...so that the guppies would pester the other bottom dwelling fish first, or just diffuse the amount of pestering per badis

Yes me too, there are several ideas that all 3 dwarf badis are so closely related they may be a single species...then other people (as of 1999) said there are 3 species ...and within those 2 regions with various traights... but even though they look identical there are 2 that differ only in the number of teeth haha. So I sure wouldn't want to decide what is a species and what isnt
@@Fishtory I think it might come down to how long each branch has been isolated. DNA testing can determine that.
Thats what I think is a fair way to do it. but look at camels and llamas...they have been apart like 20 million years and still can have a baby together!
@@Fishtory But is it sterile? Bactrian and dromedary camels can breed together but the offspring is sterile. Homosapiens and Neanderthals and Denisovans were separated by 100 million years but produced viable offspring and the proof is in all human DNA outside of Africa. Even the Denisovans and Neanderthals interbred together.
yes and likely 2 or more other variations of humans interbred as like floresiensis and Pacific islanders possibly.
on my DNA test I came back 5% Neanderthal lol...literally the most you can still have in you. 99.98 percentile

A lot of people think they aren't in the same family as Gourami and Bettas cu they don't make a bubble nest like the usual species within the group... I have some wild bettas that are mouth brooders and some that are pit spawners lol... But right now I have a tank full of male Scarlets so hopefully my next batch I'll have some females :-)
So the fry need to start off eating infusoria? Easy to make a culture. Take a piece of broccoli, boil it til it is soft, place it in a jar and let cool, add some water from an established fish tank, and add some plants also from an established tank. Place in a sunny windowsill,, preferably in a secluded place outside the house (because the culture smells very bad) and let it sit open for O2 access. Takes 1-3 weeks for your culture to form and the water will turn milky with the infusoria. Then use a turkey baster to suck up a couple of mililiters of this culture 3-4 times a day to feed the fry once the fry's yolk sacks are gone.

Watching this again because mine are breeding right now (!!!!) ...also wondering if you have ever seen a female with blue coloring on the pectoral fins? In the past when your fish changed sex (M to F) did the fish retain any red or blue coloration? Also the male that just bred is very interesting and has spiky protrusions on the top fin and a double anal fin!
Yes the blue hue has stayed...never any red stripes or black/dark gray stripes though... however females that are born female and don't flip, seem to have some iridescencens near the gill plate and belly.

Dario eat planaria? That’s just wrong. Hardly any fish eat planaria as they are very sour. Not every worm like animal in your tank are planaria. I don’t know the English name but translated often these worms are oil worms. Fish like them.
Lots of fish will eat planaria If they are hungry and are not used to fish food from the store. But if they have a choice, they would eat the pre-made food every time

You won't believe it but these fish are illegal to import into Australia. I've enquired with quite a few importers here but no dice.
Ironically guppies, swordtails and goldfish are a still allowed import despite the fact that there are so many feral populations of them
that are presently causing huge environmental problems.
I cannot see how a tiny fish which has rather narrow environmental parameters could cause any sort of problems in Australian waterways.

That's not the half of it....
No puffers of any sort.
No nano gouramis except sparkling & chocolate
No catfish except corydoras, otos, pictus, some plecos and 3 species of synodontus.
No rasboras, except 4 species.
No gobies except for bumblebee and peacock.
No killifish except for 3 genus.
No danios except for 6 species
The original allowed list was made nearly 55 years ago and was totally based on Axelrods "Aquarium fishes" and the list has barely been updated, no allowance for new species or changes in taxonomy.
We have 4 lists
*White ( allowed import)
*Red ( illegal import but not noxious ie you are allowed to own them because people are breeding them).
*Black ( Noxious- illegal to import and keep)
*Grey (????????)
So every now and again someone will go through great expense and get permits to import something on the grey list.
These are usually big expensive fish ie stingrays or cichlids.
No one wants to spend huge amounts of money just to import a dozen Dario or pea puffers which at any moment could go onto the Black list because of some dubious recommendation.
Man that's tough. I guess cane toads and rabbits really effed you guys over. I bet theres a group of Asians in Sydney or Melbourne...or like in Darwin / some of the isolated islands that are bringing in illegal stuff. Can you have eggs legally? like some states you can't have the fish but theres no technical law about eggs...or in extreme cases (sperm /milt and eggs/ roe...for arrowana someone was caught with it on their body in LA... A Taiwanese business man had like all these viles of eggs, and then from the CITIES red list he had life sperm and eggs he planned to IVF within hours of landing
@@Fishtory ooh yes, plenty of illegal stuff comes in , usually in with other shipments. And the occasional airline traveller.
There is a consortium of very wealthy Asian people who put together the most comprehensive and well researched study on how Asian Arowana would not survive in Australian waterways , they wanted to microchip each fish, they were wanting a permit system and database.... It was brilliant work! But it was rejected or is pending or something.
It just disappoints me though that I can import 2 thousand wild guppies, that I can sell for nothing to anyone i choose, who can do god knows what with them but I cant import a couple of pea puffers.
I have to point out though that we have a lot of feral fish species, worst being Gambusia, European carp, tilapia, redfin perch and brook trout.
Some species have reverted back to wild forms like swordtails, mollies and Siamese bettas. ( There is a guy who actually exports these to Europe as apparently the wild types are in demand!)
Holy Hell, that is ridiculous. For us here, peacock bass, snakeheads, zebra mussles, flying carp and tilapia are probably causing the most damage

I have not had that happen yet, in any meaningful numbers. the eggs are very tiny and the father chases away shrimp from his little nest

I use that 10% or 15 % off code in my mind to bring that cost down...for me and some loyal customers theyll stack codes if you use their current 25% off sale and then mention you have a code from my channel. Theyll enter you into future give aways and sometimes toss in little extras or select the largest portions in the inventory
@@jkaquatics4284 Yes, I would definitely buy much more and I don't understand because I buy fish from other places, even from Thailand, and it isn't that expensive. Doesn't make sense, I pay 20 for a couple of fish and 40 for the shipping.
