came back to watch this again because i got my habrosus today, and i must say i adore them already. i have pygmys as well and it's interesting watching the similarities and differences in their behavior. also that mohawk looks absolutely bangin btw
I have 9 in a 20 gallon with a male Betta. They get along great. I originally bought 10 but the smallest one died day 1 of quarantine. I might go get a few more one day but I like the balance of the current stocking. Mine go crazy for fluval bug bites.
Just picked up 10 for $15 from my LFS. I knew I should have bought more. Oh well, now I have a reason to go back :). At that price, I think I will get another 20 of them. They’ll be great with my black bar Endlers.
Corydoras are one of my all time favs. I originally bought 2 because they reminded me of zoidburg from futurama. The same 2 I originally bought Lived for close to 6 years. Moving from a 1ft by 1ft tank up as my tanks got larger. Till they were in a 4ft long by 3 ft wide tank. Their tank mates included Jack Dempsey, Sarratoga, Severums, a texas cichlid and at one point (before the Sarratoga) an oscar. They were never eaten and always looked in great health. I would highly suggest them for any freshwater tank. They may not be bright and colourful but are always out and zipping around like they just drank a whole pot of coffee.
Both my wife and I just love our habrosus. Tell me, have you ever seen them form a kind of Conga line and race across the tank . I have not seen this "formation" with my other Cory's and it is hilarious to watch.
Now this is how these guys should be kept!! When I first got started several years ago (when I knew nothing lol) My lfs had these guys and I asked if I needed a big group and they said no, that 3 was fine so I took them home. On another note they also said I only needed a few pygmy corys as well but the 3 I got NEVER hung out together so I went back and got more and now I have about 20 pygmys. They are always together and SUCH A PLEASURE TO WATCH! Unfortunately my lfs only got more salt n peppers one more time since and someone bought all but one which I of course brought home but he didn't make it a week so I still only have 3 and really want more. I have 2 females and one male and I would love to see them in a big group to get to see more natural behavior like my pygmys. Do you sell these guys I hope? I would love to get at least 10.
I know this video is old, but these are my favorite little fish. They're way too fintastically cute. My habrosus are a little clumsy with tank mates and randomly lay on my cherry shrimp. As well as bumping the nerite off the glass. Can't wait to upgrade my 20 tall to a 40 breeder so I can get more.
Oh my gosh I love these guys!! Do you have any for sale on your site? I checked the Currently in Stock list, but I was hoping it updated, lol I'm impatient.
Those are some nice cories! I have the same issue with common names haha. Too many common names per fish, so it's easier to just know their scientific name so there's little confusion (except when there's multiple species that look very much similar to each other)
Great video! I would like to have also heard what is right for the casul hobbiest with 10 or 20 gallon tanks. Not just huge 75 gallon tanks. I'm thinking of getting 5 for a 10 gallon with my mellow, juvenile elephant ear/dumbo delta tail betta. Would you think 5 would be o.k. in a 10 gallon tank with a betta and sand,, and a lot of live plants of course? Maybe 6 or 7 of them?
Hello Rachel! I learn so much from your videos. Thank you! I have a question...I’m just starting a 29 gallon. An upgrade from a 10, baby steps :). I have the intention of having an angelfish or two and want a bottom dweller. These are adorable! Would this size be concerning? My hope is the angel (or two) won’t care about the bottom of the tank.
The Angel's would have the potential to eat them when they reach full size. Biggest danger is that if they try, the pectoral spines can vet stuck in the Angel's mouth. I would go with a full sized cory in all honesty
I love my habrosus. I have 3 females and 5 males (the females are at least twice the size of the males). You mentioned that they will eat their own eggs and might not be good with shrimp. I have them in a tank with red cherries and the only time I see them eating a shrimp is when the shrimp has died off and the cory gets to it before I do. How common is it for these fish to spawn in a community tank? I wasn't trying at all, but I'm pretty sure I saw a small wriggler fry about 2 weeks ago, and I think it was from my cories (nothing else would be swimming on the bottom like that). It was
Bloody hell! How much hairspray did that take!!! I knew a guy who used glue, I asked him how he got it out and he said good question. Not dissing the hair it looks awesome. As for corydora and shrimp, if you have amano shrimp... dont worry. They are ninjas and can do parkour extremely well.
my albino cory is having a wierd problem with him able to swim around but unable to stay at the bottom of the tank looks like he is having a hard time to sink. he is weak as well getting sucked and unable to get out of the filter. i took him out and placed him in a separate tank i placed lots of crushed peas but he dont seem to eat aswell it has been 2 days now. Will adding epsom salt may help and how to? Thanks in advance.
I keep mine with with kuhli loaches - their busy-body-ness keeps the loaches out in the open more than usual as they constantly "nudge" them from their hiding places. You're absolutely right - they are VERY entertaining! Do have any Hastatus in your fishroom?
Hi Rachel...I presently have bronze and peppered corys that are healthy, active and from which I have had fry (even in the planted community tank). I am planning a planted angelfish tank in which I intend to have half of the substrate as just play sand as I want to have another type of cory in there with the angels. (just angels and corys). My water here is 7.6 out of the tap and stable. I am in the subtropics and so tank temp can reach 29C (84-85F) in the summer months. Could you recommend another type of cory that would be okay in those conditions...thanks.
These Corys are cool. I'll keep an eye out for them. I'm terrible at the Latin names. My tongue won't cooperate. Plus remembering them all. Do you have any plans on doing a vid on nerites? Probably not considered nano. But it's been difficult to get detailed info on them.
Have you ever had a "bad batch" of habrosus cories before? I purchased 11 to QT for my 20g long "nano" tank, but they all died in quarantine but of no apparent causes that I could see. Using a different tank but purchasing from the same source I got another 10 and they're all thriving! I purchased the two groups about a month and a half or two apart...since they were all wild-caught, could it be seasonality or something like that?
+Abby Smith I have, they are shipped SO densely (600 to a bag in a lot of cases when exported) and it can be hit or miss. One tip I do with them is to keep them in relatively shallow water if they are fresh into the country. This makes gulping air less laborious for them.
I lost two panda Cory in a week but I did do a water change after the first one die. Still have 8 of them but movement not a lot. But they still eat so far. The second one when I took it out has white pimple on its face so not sure what is the cause of death. I have a few plants and only two small albino pelco in the tank.
Rachel, I live in the California Central Valley, and have a small pond in my yard (700ish gallons). The pond never freezes. It jist doesn't get cold enough here. I want to put a large school of corydoras in the pond year round. Is there a species you'd recommend? Paleatus perhaps?
Very helpful video, and quite the coincidence: habrosus are on the short list of corys I want to keep in the 20-long I'm cycling. Do you think eco-complete is too rough a substrate for their barbels?
Hi Rachel, what is your recommended nitrate level for these guys? I’ve had a group of 10 in a heavily planted 29 gallon for 4 months. They have grown from juvenile to adult, eat and act like healthy Cory’s, but they always seem itchy. My nitrates rise up to 40-80ppm furring the week. Since they never seem sick or stressed (just itchy and flashy) I’m wondering if they sensitive to the nitrate levels moving around. I can’t figure it out.
He's already catfish do well. Mostly with their own breed do not think for one moment. They can be with any other kind of life. It is fish because their opportune moments lurking in the dark can lead to death of delicate Neons from my experience just found the leader of the family of neons in a corner in pieces and had been missing for a few days after this fish had been fed quite well.
Great as always. I have a thought, but it may be a bit too much to ask--how about a "Species Suggestions for Nano Tanks:Couplings". Some of us Nano tank keepers have, well, small tanks and can't keep these huge schools that you mention. So what are your suggestions on stocking for truly nano tanks? Personally, I am having a helluva time with finding nano fish locally, and keeping a cleanup crew that can survive my very, very low PH tank. I have a 20High with lots of plants and driftwood, with a PH of
+Jean “thebklynblujay” Rosa What are you considering nano? Many of these species really can do well in small tanks, but in my mind, truly nano is under 10 gallons. The issue I think most folks have is that they want to duplicate what they would see in a larger tank, in a small tank. Nanos have their own set of rules, and multiple species are not often possible (if done well, in appropriate groups) though we could often do a species tank and house any number of fish responsibly. For instance, I also recommend 10 or more of boraras, which would be appropriate even in a teeny tank because of their adult shape and size.
Rachel O'leary Thanks so much for your response. I thought Nano was smaller than 20, but I'm going on information I've read that 20 is also considered Nano. Interesting point you made about the issues a lot of us have with attempted replication of the larger tanks. I would love to learn the rules of Nano tank husbandry! Thanks again.
+SevernRunAquatics I think that depends on which type of apisto, but I would think ok. As you know, some species of apistos are nicer than others. I find wild cacs to be total jerks, but most others would likely be fine.
macmasteri aren't usually big jerks, though they do have big mouths. I would think it would be fine, though you would want to watch especially when the apistos are in spawning gear. These little cories have the spiniest pelvic fins (hurts like all get out when they jab you).
I have a female betta (she is pretty young) in a fully cycled 10g and I was looking for future tankmates, would you recommend these or no? I can't really find much information on them with bettas. I have sand and a 30g sunsun canister filter if that helps and she is currently the only occupant.
Hey.. I need advice, I’m new to aquariums.. i just added my Corydora catfish to my 10 gal with a male Betta & 4 neon Tetras. Betta and Tetras get along but Corey died in 1,5 days, I am puzzled why and it had red bleeding like marks all over the chest. I saw male Betta only nipped Cory once when they first met but after that Betta was ignoring Cory so I don’t think Betta was the one to wound it. I also turned off filter for the night but water is clean .. treated and everything looks good, Heater is installed too. Maybe the turned off filter made it die? Tetras and bettas seem to like peaceful water at night and play in the filter’s water strewn during the day.. Are Corys prone to some kind of disease that causes those red wound-like bleeding looking marks? This got me really sad and I feel super bad right now that I couldn’t provide a proper life to this Cory.
it was probably stressed because it was alone. they need to be in schools of at least 6, which definitely won't find in a 10 gallon with 4 neons and a betta
weedblaster thanks for ur response. I’m still confused and wondering to this day. I saw a weird injury-like red spot after it died, which makes me wonder it that was Betta who nipped too hard or the fact that I don’t have a bubbler? No bubbler is fine for bettas and Tetras it looks like so I don’t know if lack of oxygen could have caused Cory’s death . .. I’ve had that Cory only for 1 night before it died the next morning. I actually still feel bad about it. Sucks :( My plan was to get a second one the next day for a company.
I have a huge tank that I'd like to fill with smaller fish. It's 7 feet long and 26 inches wide. If I have a school of at least20 habrosus, will there be an issue if I also have kuhli and hillstream loaches as well as maybe one or two apistogramma? Asking because they all well at the bottom of the tank. Thanks.
Shouldn't as none of them compete as algae eaters, the oxygen and temp requirements of the hillstream are the real problem as its opposite to the needs of the apistos
I love your corys! I am thinking of getting some albinos and have been doing research buy am getting mixed info on ideal temp. Some sources say they can be kept at 68 degrees no problem (that is the normal temp in my house in cold Canada :)) and others say they should be at 78 degrees. What is your opinion?
+sam pollard That really depends on which species- C. aeneus (the albinos generally found) do fine as low as 21C (70F), Brochis splendens do fine down to 68, Scleromystax barbatus down to 16C (60F) while other species like like a minimum of 24C (75F) with warmer being much better. There just isn't a blanket answer as it varies greatly as cories are collected alllll over the place.
I'd love You to do species spotlight on Corydoras paleatus!! I enjoy watching all of Your videos andof course learn from them so please please do it at some point :)
Hello, I need some help regarding these little guys. 3 days ago I've got 5 of them for my 13 gallon tank. In the store I asked what type of food I should get them and they said that micro pellets would be just fine. However, they don't seem to eat it at all! I usually put the food in the areas they like to hang out in, but they don't have a noticeable "feed response". They don't seem to even acknowledge that there is food there, and it worries me. They are the only inhabitants besides 2 cherry shrimps, so there's nothing chasing them off. I'm just really worried for them,so any advice/idea would be appreciated.
wow Rachel , minimum of ten, good to know . could that be mixed species or best just one type . in the past my cories barbs fell off and they died.my water is hard and I used gravel some times boiled beach gravel mixed in. any way planning a 55 planted tank with black Diamond and soil or maybe ecocomplete and my tap water . is there a type of Cory that would be ok in harder water and black Diamond if so can I get 5 at a time and build my colony slowly. Hope you're having fun and making some money in Maryland
Gravel is too hard on their barbs, my guys are in a 300litre tank with sand, driftwood, lots of plants, some sharks and neons. I got the play sand for kids in the big plastic bags. If it wasn't in bags I'd definatly wash it in hot water, you'd never know where it's been!
@@RachelOLeary for the positive though i mean absoluttly no offence but you look a lot more healthy now ! I do have a question i have an planted 40liter aquarium with a monte carlo carpet. Do you thinks these cute guys will do okay in their without sand or fine gravel to grase on ? Or will they just eat food from the MC? Thaankyou somuch
do u know what marine velvet looks like on peppered corys?I think mine have it,they defo have a metallic skin disease that is spreading as only 1 started with it.any help would be greatly appreciated
Would cleaning a tank bother a Cory into releasing their toxin? Have one in a 5 gallon with 4 neons and a betta. Thinking of going ten so I can get more cories for him and maybe a few more tetras.
Is eco-complete safe for corydoras catfish? A reply is appreciated. Also how do you feed them, I have kept other cory species years ago and had trouble feeding them? And would they be fine in an open top aquarium (20 gallon long)?
+dajoke24 eco complete is a little rough so it would really depend on what species, as they have different feeding and foraging behaviors. Feeding sinking pellets or worms generally works out well.
Rachel O'leary Thanks for the reply, I don't want to go on long as I'm sure you're busy. If I decide to get cory catfish which species would do fine on eco-complete. Also is an open top aquarium completely fine for cory catfish or are they known to jump out? Thanks again.
Rachel O'Leary Ok thank you. Also thank you for actually replying so fast... I have a quick question about Malaysian Trumpet Snails I’ve asked a few people but have got no reply. Do they eat diatoms? And do they eat algae and stuff on plant leaves(live plants) or do they mainly stick to the bottom of the tank and the glass??? I got 5 nerite snails to help with my plant leaves but they are hardly ever on my plants mainly they’re on the glass and bottom so I’m trying to find a snail which actually eats off of the leaves but doesn’t eat the leaves lol
They do eat various algae, but not super efficiently. They will eat just about everything whereas nerites only eat algae (though not hair or green spot)
Not that I love the look of it but I never saw them so happy as when I had a school of them in a 55 gallon with play sand. It's so soft and luxurious to bottom feeders like this. I never knew they had the behavior of just dipping their whole faces down into the sand until the play sand. Makes me want to get it again but I don't like the look.
+Thor's Aquatics They are electrofished for the most part, resulting in high mortality. I don't support that kind of collection so will only buy them if I can find someone who collects them with alternative methods. Breaks my heart, but its the right thing to do.
I keep them together with Nannstomus marginatus - nice combination IMO. They spawned for me twice - first time I removed all other fish, and the fry and parents stayed together in the tank (see my pictures on Commons commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Corydoras-habrosus-Jungfisch-Schnauze.jpg). Second time the fry is still in a net in the tank of their parents - was not able to catch all Nannostomus in time ;-) I think that these cories are not as durable as other - they definitely need a good filtration and reg. water changes.
Would you happen to be willing to sell these? I would like to buy some eventually but I do not like buying from overseas, and I thought I read somewhere that you live in Maryland! Do you have a portal set up for selling them already?
Lots of times pet stores mix up pygmy cory and salt and pepper cory. I've bought maybe 20-30 total for my 55g, and it's almost an even split S&P/Pygmy. Can they breed with one-another?
Courtney Carlisle they really need to be on groups of no less than six, like all Cory species. They're super social and become very skiddish and stressed when alone or in low numbers. The good news is that this species are so small, that even though they are very active, a group of anywhere from 10-30 can easily be kept in a 20 long. I would not go too much smaller than that because it's not just their size, but activity level and behavior you have to consider when choosing environment size. I've seen them kept in smaller tanks, but they really thrive with a little more room.
Hahaha your hair caught me off guard, not that we shouldn't expect this 😂 sending 💕
At first I thought I accidentally clicked on a mohawk video🤣
300 of them? Oh my god. I would be in heaven! They are my favorite!
+Silentwisher me too! love these guys
Me three! They are good at multiplying when they're happy, my cory population has exploded!

Rachel O'leary
Thanks so much for your response. I thought Nano was smaller than 20, but I'm going on information I've read that 20 is also considered Nano. Interesting point you made about the issues a lot of us have with attempted replication of the larger tanks. I would love to learn the rules of Nano tank husbandry! Thanks again.
Bravo! Loved it as per usual. I've been looking to purchase some of these. How do you think they'd do with apistos?
+SevernRunAquatics I think that depends on which type of apisto, but I would think ok. As you know, some species of apistos are nicer than others. I find wild cacs to be total jerks, but most others would likely be fine.
+Rachel O'leary I won a wild pair of macmasteri at the big fish deal was hoping to use these guys with them
macmasteri aren't usually big jerks, though they do have big mouths. I would think it would be fine, though you would want to watch especially when the apistos are in spawning gear. These little cories have the spiniest pelvic fins (hurts like all get out when they jab you).
+Rachel O'leary maybe if the grow up with them they'd be less likely to attack. I've never had an Apisto attack fish and my male Cacatuoides is huge.
+SevernRunAquatics I had one male cac (wild) that was the biggest jerk ever, but otherwise have had few issues
My salt and pepper cory has taken a liking to my pygmy male. Could they possibly breed with each other?!
Sucks :(
My plan was to get a second one the next day for a company.
I just noticed that’s a Preuss T shirt, did you used to work there or go there? I work there now
I visited a few years ago. Fantastic store. one of my good fish friends used to work there
I have a huge tank that I'd like to fill with smaller fish.
@@RachelOLeary I was thinking of the A. Borellii. I believe they prefer temperatures in the 70s.
Which type stays smaller?
I'd love You to do species spotlight on Corydoras paleatus!! I enjoy watching all of Your videos andof course learn from them so please please do it at some point :)
How much do these cost where you are at? The only store I've seen it here in Hawaii was charging $5 a piece a little pricy for a tiny fish.
such busy little fish!
Try frozen baby brine shrimp
@@RachelOLeary Thank you, will try it next time!
Hi Rachel, do you keep Poecilia wingei? They might make a good Species Spotlight. Really active interesting fish.
+Stuart Willoughby Yep! They are a great little fish, perfect with these guys as well :)
Daaaaang look at ur mohawk, idk if u understand how happy i would have been as a kid with a mohawk like that, great video! party on Rachel!
well, as a kid, I was not allowed to cut my hair at all. Look how that worked out lol
Do they breed readily?
Any tips of getting them to spawn?
That mow hawk so cool
hello Rachel i was wondering if you could use an egg tumbler to hatch out the eggs?
wow Rachel , minimum of ten, good to know . could that be mixed species or best just one type .
in the past my cories barbs fell off and they died.my water is hard and I used gravel some times boiled beach gravel mixed in.
any way planning a 55 planted tank with black Diamond and soil or maybe ecocomplete and my tap water . is there a type of Cory that would be ok in harder water and black Diamond if so can I get 5 at a time and build my colony slowly.
Would you consider these little guys suitable for a tank smaller than 10 gallons? I love tiny cories! They're sooo cute
+Jane Doe depends on the footprint really
Can you keep Corys with plecos? Love your videos :)
Damn rach you've changed a lot over the years!
yep
@@RachelOLeary for the positive though i mean absoluttly no offence but you look a lot more healthy now ! I do have a question i have an planted 40liter aquarium with a monte carlo carpet. Do you thinks these cute guys will do okay in their without sand or fine gravel to grase on ? Or will they just eat food from the MC? Thaankyou somuch
One of my top ten!!!
do u know what marine velvet looks like on peppered corys?I think mine have it,they defo have a metallic skin disease that is spreading as only 1 started with it.any help would be greatly appreciated
I keep them in a planted 20g tall. They spawn and have tons of babies
I want to buy that light colored Pellet with the Snail on it, in the Video .
Is it a Frozen Dried Brine Shrimp Cube ?
Have you covered rubber nose or bulldog pleco?
You effin' ROCK! I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!! 👍🏾👍🏾🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Would cleaning a tank bother a Cory into releasing their toxin? Have one in a 5 gallon with 4 neons and a betta. Thinking of going ten so I can get more cories for him and maybe a few more tetras.
No, not generally- and the dilution would make it a nonissue. It is generally only a problem in small volumes of water- like shipping bags.
I keep losing these in the first day after transfer...anyone have tips? I do fine with hastatus and Pygmaeus
Rachel, can i keep them at 65 - 67 °F during winter period ?
Do they have to have a heater because I have a cold water tank and I’m thinking about getting them because my fish died
They would need at least mid 70s
Would these be ok in planted 10 gallon?
Yeah
How do u keep your hair like that
Are these a Pygmy type??? My salt n pepper Cory’s are ALOT bigger than these and also mine don’t have that black stripe
There are salt and pepper, c. Paleatus, that are a full sized cory
Anyone know if these would be compatible with sparkling gouramis in a ten gallon tank?
rando snail just creepin in that for food nugget
damn I love your hair here. nice.
yes green lace shrimp, never seen u carry anymore..
+Thor's Aquatics They are electrofished for the most part, resulting in high mortality. I don't support that kind of collection so will only buy them if I can find someone who collects them with alternative methods. Breaks my heart, but its the right thing to do.
+Rachel O'leary that's why I don't seen them for years!
Can small amounts of aquarium Salt hurt the cory?
Could you do a species spot light on scarlet badis
If you buy them on-line and they say they already QT ...do you also have to QT again....and for how long? Can 3 to with a bettas in a 5 gallon?
I would still qt for a month of health
I keep them together with Nannstomus marginatus - nice combination IMO. They spawned for me twice - first time I removed all other fish, and the fry and parents stayed together in the tank (see my pictures on Commons commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Corydoras-habrosus-Jungfisch-Schnauze.jpg). Second time the fry is still in a net in the tank of their parents - was not able to catch all Nannostomus in time ;-) I think that these cories are not as durable as other - they definitely need a good filtration and reg. water changes.
+DW7887 I adore marginatus and agree- that is an excellent pairing.
Can you spotlight a mystery snail please?
Nice video, very informative. Unlike some of the mindless dross I’ve heard on here !!!!!
what is the food you’re feeding them?
Would apistos pick at them too much?
I love your mowhawk
how big do they get Rachel
Is it okay to have different types of cory in a tank? Will they swim together?
+AvithejokerZ it's best to have bigger groupings of less species for better behavior, though those from the same complex will often swim together
Would you happen to be willing to sell these? I would like to buy some eventually but I do not like buying from overseas, and I thought I read somewhere that you live in Maryland! Do you have a portal set up for selling them already?
I found your website... sorry! Would love to visit if I can sometime!
+Nate K sure. I am in DC area this weekend for catcon, but welcome visitors as long as we make an appointment
Okay! Thank you!
How many I can keep in a 10 gallons ?
Lots of times pet stores mix up pygmy cory and salt and pepper cory. I've bought maybe 20-30 total for my 55g, and it's almost an even split S&P/Pygmy. Can they breed with one-another?
+ChallengerHQ I have never heard of them hybridizing
I'll second that no knowledge of any corys interbreeding
+John Doe lots of cities can hybridize. Not sure if dwarf cities can or not
source pls, been doing this for 50 years, corys don't generally intermingle. I can't speak to cities. :)
+John Doe read Ian fuller's books or visit his website or Facebook group. Cities from within the same "family" can hybridize
Can i put one of these in a community tank or do they need to be in groups
Courtney Carlisle they really need to be on groups of no less than six, like all Cory species. They're super social and become very skiddish and stressed when alone or in low numbers. The good news is that this species are so small, that even though they are very active, a group of anywhere from 10-30 can easily be kept in a 20 long. I would not go too much smaller than that because it's not just their size, but activity level and behavior you have to consider when choosing environment size. I've seen them kept in smaller tanks, but they really thrive with a little more room.
